We return from the break and see Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the winning team.
“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “Matt and Hayley have proven themselves worthy, and now have the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, Olmec’s gonna give them some information to help them retrieve that Broken Helmet of Erik the Red…”
Olmec begins to explain the layout as the camera gives us a first-person tour of the Temple:
“You could start…by running up the stairs to the Crypt! Grab the book from the skeletons, and pass into the Bottomless Pit! Swing across the gap, and climb into the Lookout Tower. Focus the telescope to read the ancient print on the far wall, and a door may open into the Geographer’s Study. Find the missing pieces of the map and correctly place them, and pass into the Inventor’s Workshop. Turn the wheel to start the machine, and open the door to the SHRIIIIINE of the Silver Monkey! Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room…of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the correct inscription and shout it out to open the door to the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage. Slide down the tunnel to the Dungeon, where you could smash through the wall into the Dark Forest—but beware of the Temple Guards that may inhabit the trees! Find the key in the tree, and you’ll enter the Chamber…of the Four Elements. Place the elements in the proper order, and you’ll gain entry to the Owl’s Nest! Find the special white owl and attach it to its proper nest, then…race through the Pit, climb through the Ledges, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone!” Olmec pauses. “You won 1½ Pendants in the Temple Games. Who’s going first?”
“I am,” says Hayley, raising her hand.
“Very well, Hayley,” Olmec replies. “When Kirk gives the signal, you’ll race through the Gate into the Temple and make your way toward the Broken Helmet. Hidden inside the Temple are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but—if you’re caught without a Pendant, you’ll be taken out of the Temple, and it’ll be Matt’s turn to enter and try his luck. Hidden somewhere in the Temple is the other half of your Pendant. If you can find it and you’re carrying the other half, you’ll receive an extra life. If you can reach the Helmet, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the Gate with the Broken Helmet of Erik the Red in three minutes, and you’ll both be handsomely rewarded—and here’s how!”
• Just for making it this far, they’ll get a game table.
• If they can reach the Broken Helmet within three minutes, they’ll also receive a bicycle from Mongoose.
• And if they can bring the Broken Helmet out of the Temple before three minutes expires, they’ll win a trip to Mexico.
“Viva México!” Kirk says. “Let’s see if we can get ‘em there. Let’s both of you get your mouthpieces in. Let’s set the clock for three minutes!” The clock slams into the bottom corner of the screen with a loud gong.
“Olmec, lower your gate,” Kirk requests. Olmec moans gutturally as the gate is lowered, and the black lights under him go out.
“Are you ready, Hayley?” Kirk asks.
“Yeah,” Hayley says, poised in a starting position.
“She says she’s ready, folks,” Kirk remarks. “On your mark, get set…GO!”
Hayley rushes up the stairs, clutching her team’s only full Pendant. She soon enters the Crypt and pulls all three books, opening the door to the Ledges with her second pull and the door to the Bottomless Pit on her third pull (2:50). Hayley proceeds into the Pit and swings across the gap using the rope. She climbs up and tries the actuator for the door to the Lookout Tower, but it won’t open. She climbs down, completely bypassing the actuator to the Geographer’s Study, to the bottom of the room. “Gotta be careful not to get stuck in the Bottomless Pit,” Kirk narrates. Hayley hits the actuator for the door to the Owl’s Nest, and the door opens (2:35). She scrambles into the room and looks around for a few seconds. “She’s gotta find the white owl,” Kirk explains, “and then attach it to the right nest!” Hayley goes to the back of the room and digs through the stuffed owls for about three seconds before coming up with a stuffed snowy owl (2:24). She brings it to the circle of nests in the center of the room and places it on the one closest to her, but nothing happens. She tries the nest to the right of it, and the door to the Chamber of the Four Elements opens (2:17). “That’s it!” Kirk narrates. “Now she’s headed into the Room of Four Elements!” Hayley enters the room, but is immediately ambushed by the first TEMPLE GUARD (2:11). “Oh, a Temple Guard!” Kirk narrates. “She’s got a Pendant, though!” Hayley hands her Pendant to the Guard, and he moves off-screen. Hayley goes to the back of the room and places the element tiles in the order “fire, water, air, earth”, but nothing happens. “Those elements could go in any order,” Kirk narrates. “She might be there for a while!” Hayley tries switching the air and fire tiles around, but again, nothing happens. She switches around the tile combinations of fire & water, air & earth, earth & fire, and fire & air until the door to the Dark Forest opens (1:39). “That opened a door!” Kirk narrates. Hayley notices the open door, and makes her way into the room. Instead of reaching into the trees, though, she immediately breaks through the wall into the Dungeon—only to be captured by the second TEMPLE GUARD (1:32).
“Oh, Temple Guard! Go, Matt, go!” Kirk urges, and Matt takes off. He dashes up the stairs and enters the Crypt, rushes into the Bottomless Pit, and slides down off the outcropping to the bottom floor of the room (1:19). He enters the Owl’s Nest, maneuvers around the stuffed owls in the room, and enters the Chamber of Four Elements. Matt dashes across the room and climbs into the Dark Forest (1:06). But instead of proceeding through the broken wall into the Dungeon, he reaches into the stage-right tree. Unfortunately, he comes out empty-handed (0:54). He goes over to the stage-left tree and reaches in, and this time, successfully finds a key. “He found a key—will he find the right keyhole?” Kirk narrates. Matt takes the key to the left-side door and inserts it, but nothing happens. He takes the key to the central door, but before trying the keyhole, he picks up the hidden half Pendant stuck on the door (0:42). “Oh, he found the half Pendant!” Kirk narrates. “That could come in handy later on!” Matt sticks the key in the door, but it doesn’t open. He goes over to the last door on the right, but looks very disappointed when this one won’t open either. “Not one of those doors will open!” Kirk narrates. Matt climbs over the foam rocks of the broken-down wall and enters the Dungeon (0:32). He notices the ladder in the room, and begins climbing it. “That ladder leads into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey!” Kirk narrates. Matt reaches the top of the ladder, pushes the actuator, but the door to the Shrine does not open (0:22). With a very pissed look on his face, Matt climbs down the ladder, jumping off when he only has two rungs left. He darts over to the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage and begins climbing. “Now he’s headed into the Room of the Secret Password!” Kirk narrates. “He’s got less than twenty seconds left—he’s gonna have to hurry!” Matt enters the room and is immediately ambushed by the third TEMPLE GUARD (0:13). “Oh, there’s the third Temple Guard!” Kirk narrates. “Good thing he found the half Pendant back in the…Bamboo Forest!” Matt hands over the two Pendant halves, and the Temple Guard disappears back into the secret door in the back of the room. Matt retrieves the tablet from the cabinet at the back of the room and takes out his mouthpiece (0:06). “Long live Olmec!” he shouts, but nothing happens. He goes to the stage-right cabinet and opens it. He pulls out the tablet and shouts “Open Sesame!” The door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey opens, but time runs out immediately thereafter.
“Oh, he ran out of time!” Kirk laments. “He tried every shortcut imaginable, but nothing worked except the long way! That’s okay, though—they still get the game table, and their dignity as well. We’ve gotta get out of here, unfortunately, but we’ll see you next time. But just remember: it’s not just Legends—it’s Legends: Rebirth! Buh-bye, everybody!”
Kirk and Hayley wave to the crowd as the credits roll. Matt emerges from the Temple a few seconds before the Stone Stanley logo appears onscreen.
