Legends: Rebirth-The Model Heart of William Harvey

Episode 36: The Model Heart of William Harvey

The camera winds and twists its way through a thick jungle of strange and exotic plants. After a few wrong turns, it finally stops in front of an ancient Mayan temple. At the base of the temple, a giant stone head sits. Suddenly, the head’s eyes light up and it begins to speak:

Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth!” These words appear on the screen. “With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is now!”

A middle-aged man wearing a denim shirt and blue jeans swings in on a rope. He drops down and runs up the Steps of Knowledge, microphone in hand.

“Thank you! Thank you, everybody! Nice to see everyone again! It’s good to see you again, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth. The rooms are filled with lost treasures protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legends behind each of these newly discovered treasures in his temple…which one are we gonna hear about today, Olmec?”

“The legend of the Model Heart of William Harvey,” Olmec replies.

“Oh, the Model Heart of William Harvey,” Kirk responds. “Well, one of our six teams will have a chance to retrieve the model heart—will it be:

“The Red Jaguars?” The camera zooms in on each team as they are introduced.
“The Blue Barracudas?
“The Green Monkeys?
“The Orange Iguanas?
“The Purple Parrots?
“Or the Silver Snakes?

“They’ll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests, but in the end, only one team will have the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, they have to cross the Moat, and Olmec’s gonna tell us how they have to do that today…”

Olmec begins to explain the Moat Crossing:
“Before you, a large tree has fallen across the Moat. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will begin walking across the tree until they reach the other side. Once you’re safely across, your partner will cross in the same way. You may use the branches and roots of the tree as handholds; however, if you fall or if a knee touches the tree, you must go back and start again. Once both players reach the other side, run over and hit the gong.” Kirk bangs the Silver Snakes’ gong to demonstrate. “The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round!”

“All right, let’s get started,” Kirk says. “Hey teams, are you ready?”
All six teams scream and cheer in response.
“Olmec, are you ready?” Kirk asks.
“Let’s rock,” Olmec replies.
“All right,” says Kirk. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

The first players from each team rush onto the fallen trunk and begin to cross. The Green Monkeys’ boy falls on the trunk, touching it with his knees, and he is sent back. Everyone else makes it across in less than fifteen seconds. “They’ve got themselves across, now their partners have to make it across!” Kirk narrates. After catching himself with one of the tree’s limbs, the Green Monkeys’ boy makes it across; however, so do most of the second players of each team, and the Silver Snakes, Orange Iguanas, Blue Barracudas and Purple Parrots hit their gongs in quick succession, in that order. The Red Jaguars just come within an eyelash of hitting their gong in time.

“All right, we’ve got four teams right there!” Kirk says as he rushes over to stand beside the Silver Snakes. “The Silver Snakes had no trouble at all, right across that log; and goin’ on to the Steps of Knowledge are the Silver Snakes…along with the Purple Parrots…” Kirk pauses between each team’s name to allow applause. “…and the Orange Iguanas…and the Blue Barracudas! The Red Jaguars and the Green Monkeys did a great job, too, and we’re not sending them home with empty hands. We’ve got a great gift for ‘em, and here’s what that is!” They receive a $50 gift certificate from Old Navy.

Kirk and the remaining four teams are now standing atop the Steps of Knowledge. “As the quest continues, it’s time now for Olmec to tell us about the Model Heart of William Harvey. But pay attention, teams, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you a step closer to Olmec’s Temple…”

Olmec begins to tell the story:
“One of the most brilliant minds of all time was an Englishman named William Harvey. He was a doctor in Cambridge, and had many prominent benefactors, including King James the First, but Harvey is best known for his groundbreaking work in anatomy. In Harvey’s time, blood was thought to be like an ocean in the body, washing over body parts and supplying them with life. That all changed in 1628, when Harvey was studying animal corpses. By looking at the way the heart, arteries, and veins were positioned, he determined that blood was pumped by the heart around the body in a circular fashion. Harvey also discovered that the liver, once thought to be where the blood was produced, had nothing to do with blood circulation. Legend has it that Harvey wanted to learn how this worked in humans as well as animals, but he obviously wasn’t about to cut open a person. To help him out, he went to a wax sculptor for help.
“‘What can I do for you?’ asked the sculptor.
“‘You’ll probably think this is crazy,’ began Harvey, ‘but I need a wax model of a…human heart.’
“‘Sure thing,’ the sculptor replied. ‘You can pick it up in about…three days.’
“‘But…don’t you think my order is strange?’ asked Harvey.
“‘Hey, somebody came in here yesterday and asked for a wax model of a human head.’
“‘Who was that?’
“‘Some woman named Tussaud.’
“By using the wax model heart, Harvey was able to observe almost precisely how the human heart works. Years after Harvey’s death, the wax heart made its way to the Temple. Your quest is to retrieve the Model Heart of William Harvey and bring it back here.”

“Thanks, Olmec,” Kirk says. “But tell us, where is the Model Heart?”

“The Model Heart of William Harvey can be found in The Clockwork Room,” Olmec replies. The camera zooms in on the Model Heart placed on the guardrail of the room before fading back to Kirk.

“Teams, you’re now standing on The Steps of Knowledge,” Kirk explains. “In a moment, Olmec’s gonna ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, I want you to stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you. If you’re right, you’ll be able to move down to the next level, but if you’re wrong or run out of time, I’ll give the other teams a chance.” Kirk begins descending the Steps. “The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec’s Temple. Olmec, we’re now ready for your first question.”

Olmec begins:
“Was William Harvey from: England, Spain, or—”
The Silver Snakes ring in. “England?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Silver Snakes proceed to the next level.
“Silver Snakes step down first,” Kirk narrates. “Next question.”

“Was William Harvey’s occupation: doctor, lawyer, or—”
The Orange Iguanas ring in. “Doctor?”
“That is correct,” Olmec affirms. The Orange Iguanas join the Silver Snakes on the second step.
“Step down, Orange Iguanas,” Kirk instructs. “Next question, Olmec.”

“Did Harvey discover: how food is digested, how blood circulates—”
The Purple Parrots ring in. “How blood…circulates around the…body?”
“That…is correct,” Olmec replies. The Purple Parrots step down to the second step.
“Step down, Purple Parrots,” Kirk narrates. “It’s heating up—next question, please.”

“In Harvey’s time, was blood thought to behave like: a whirlpool, an ocean, or a river?”
The Silver Snakes ring in. “Um…an ocean?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Silver Snakes step down to the next-to-last level.
“All right—now the Silver Snakes are only a step away from the Temple Games,” Kirk explains. “Still time for the other teams, though—next question.”

“Before Harvey proved otherwise, where was blood thought to be produced—”
The Orange Iguanas ring in. “The liver…?
“That…is correct,” Olmec replies. The Orange Iguanas move down to the penultimate step.
“Nice—now the Orange Iguanas are only one step away,” Kirk observes. “Still anybody’s game, though—next question.”

“According to our legend, what did Harvey have his model heart made from: wood, wax, or gold?”
The Orange Iguanas ring in. “Wax.”
“That is correct!” Olmec exclaims. The Orange Iguanas leap to the bottom step and high-five one another.
“And there’s our first team for the Temple Games,” Kirk remarks. “We need one more team. Who’s it gonna be: the Purple Parrots, the Silver Snakes, or the…Blue Barracudas? Next question, Olmec.”

“Is the process by which blood travels around the body called: respiration, circulation, or digestion?”
The Blue Barracudas ring in. “Circulation…?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Blue Barracudas proceed to the second step.
“Blue Barracudas are now on the board!” Kirk narrates. “Still anyone’s game—next question.”

“Which of these blood vessels carry blood to the heart: arteries, veins, or capillaries?”
The Silver Snakes ring in. “Arteries…?”
“Incorrect,” Olmec replies.
The Purple Parrots ring in. “Veins…?”
“That is correct,” Olmec affirms. The Purple Parrots join the Silver Snakes on the next-to-last step.
“And now the Purple Parrots are just one step away,” Kirk observes. “Still time for the Blue Barracudas to catch up—next question, please.”

“What organ in the body supplies the blood with oxygen: the liver, the lungs, or the brain?”
The Purple Parrots ring in. “Lungs?”
“That…is correct!” Olmec booms. The Purple Parrots step to the bottom, where they are congratulated by the Orange Iguanas.

“And here are our two teams!” Kirk says as he runs over and stands between them. “They are the Orange Iguanas, and the Purple Parrots! Nice work! Blue Barracudas and Silver Snakes did a good job, too—come down here, you guys. We’re not sending you guys home with nothing—we have a great gift for you, and here’s what it is!” They receive The Princess and the Frog on DVD.

Kirk is now standing between the two advancing teams. “These two teams are gonna go head-to-head for the right to enter Olmec’s Temple, and they’ll do it right after this!”

The camera flies over Kirk and zooms in on a fake vine climbing up the Orange Iguanas’ torch at the edge of the Moat as the title appears onscreen, and we go to a commercial.

We return from the break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the two remaining teams.

“Welcome back,” he says. “Now, of course, the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest…

“So let’s hear it for Ezekiel and Marissa of the Orange Iguanas!” The audience applauds for the short brown-eyed girl with wavy black hair and the tall, blue-eyed, blond-haired boy with extremely pale skin.

“And Chris and Dana of the Purple Parrots!” The audience claps for the tall, heavily freckled green-eyed girl with long brown hair in a ponytail and the equally tall brown-eyed boy with a black crew-cut.

“Are you guys ready to play?” Kirk asks.

“Yeah!” they reply.

“All right—go get ready for the Temple Games,” Kirk says. “Now, in the Temple Games, our teams are competing for…” Kirk retrieves a Pendant of Life from his pouch and holds it up to the camera. “…Pendants of Life. The winning team will need those Pendants to protect them from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through Olmec’s Temple. There are three Temple Games—Olmec, tell us about the first one, will you, please…”

“My sole purpose is to serve,” Olmec replies matter-of-factly. The black lights under him come on and he begins to explain the first Game:

“As Harvey studied the heart, he found that it was made up of four separate chambers. Just like Harvey, you are about to make a model of the human heart. Behind you is an outline of the heart with the names of its four chambers—left atrium, right atrium, left ventricle, and right ventricle. When Kirk gives the signal, run out, grab a piece of the heart, come back and place it on your board in the correct position. Then run out and grab the next piece. Along the way, you must avoid the swinging obstacles—if you’re hit, you must go back and start again. The first player to completely assemble their heart, or—the player that’s further along at the end of thirty seconds—wins.”

“Just take it one piece oat a time,” Kirk says. “Let’s set the clock for thirty seconds!” The clock slams down in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Marissa and Dana each run out and grab the left atrium, and both come back and stick it on their board within five seconds. Both girls run back and grab the right atrium, and again, both girls place the piece without getting hit. While trying to reach the left ventricle, however, Dana is hit by the sandbag, allowing Marissa to take the lead, placing the third piece with six seconds to go. Both girls rush back out, but time expires before either can bring a piece back.

“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk says as he appears back onscreen. “Come here, you two; let’s see how you did—it looks like the Orange Iguanas got three pieces, and…the Purple Parrots only got two! The Orange Iguanas get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds for a few seconds. “Purple Parrots can still catch up in this next game, though. It’s worth a full—no, wait, it’s also worth a half Pendant. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2…”

Olmec begins:
“In his exhaustive studies, Harvey made the pivotal discovery that blood is pumped through the body by the heart in a circular motion—like the wheel you’re standing on, for instance. When Kirk gives the signal, adjust your weight and begin running to turn the wheel. For every rotation you make, it symbolizes one complete circulation of blood around the body. The player who makes the most rotations at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”

“‘Round and around they go,” Kirk remarks. “Let’s get started—set the clock for sixty seconds!” The clock slams down in the bottom corner of the screen with a loud gong sound effect. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Ezekiel and Chris are both pretty fast, each one getting a full seven turns on the giant Pendant-shaped wheel by the time the clock reaches the halfway mark. A few seconds later, Chris falls off the wheel, allowing Ezekiel to take a slight lead. With ten seconds remaining, Ezekiel falls off, and Chris manages to bridge the gap. Each boy has scores in the double digits by the time the clock runs out.

“Okay, that’s it! Time’s up,” Kirk says as he rushes back onscreen and stands between the two wheels. “Whoa—fast and furious in that game! But let’s look at the scores—it looks like both teams made seventeen rotations on their wheel, so both teams get the half Pendant of Life!” Kirk pauses here to allow some applause from the audience. “So now, the Orange Iguanas have one Pendant, and the Purple Parrots have a half Pendant. Now, we go to the third and final Temple Game. It’s worth a full Pendant of Life, and it’ll decide our winner. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3…”

Olmec begins to explain the final Game:
“The heart wasn’t the only part of the circulatory system that William Harvey studied—he also studied the blood vessels, which he found crisscrossed through the human body like a natural maze. In this game, you and your partner will have to navigate a maze of your own. When Kirk gives the signal, begin maneuvering along the chain through the maze until you find your way to the exit. The first team to exit the maze, or…the team that’s further along at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”

“This is for the Temple,” Kirk explains. “Let’s put sixty seconds on the clock!” The clock slams down in the corner of the screen with a loud gong. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Both teams begin maneuvering the chain along the giant vertical maze, remaining neck-and-neck all the way. When about twenty seconds remain, the Purple Parrots fall slightly behind when Dana appears to get tired, which allows the Orange Iguanas to pull ahead. They exit the maze with seven seconds left on the clock.

“All right, there—they did it!” Kirk says as he appears back onscreen. “They made it out—the Orange Iguanas exited the maze first, so they get the full Pendant. That gives them two; the Purple Parrots have a half—the Orange Iguanas are goin’ to the Temple!” Ezekiel and Marissa high-five one another. “Purple Parrots, you guys did great, too, and we’re not sending you guys home empty-handed. We’ve got a great gift for you two, and here’s what it is!” They receive a backpack from Outdoor Products.

As the prize disappears off-screen, Kirk is seen standing beside the Orange Iguanas. “Now we’ll see if the Orange Iguanas can make it through the Temple, retrieve the Model Heart of William Harvey—we’ll see if they can do it right after this!”

The camera pans in on the Temple, zooming in on the Dungeon and snaking up into the darkness of the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage as the title appears onscreen, and we fade to a commercial.

Legends: Rebirth-The Model Heart of William Harvey
« Reply #3 on: May 02, 2010, 01:31:47 PM »
We return from the break and find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the winning team.

“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “The Orange Iguanas have proven themselves worthy, and now they’ve earned the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, Olmec will give them some information to help them retrieve the Model Heart of William Harvey…”

Olmec begins to explain the layout as the camera gives us a first-person tour of the Temple:
“You could start…by running up the stairs to the Crypt! Grab the book from the skeletons, and pass into the Rope Labyrinth! Maneuver through the ropes, and climb into the Magician’s Chamber. Pull the rabbit from the correct hat, and a door may open into the Clockwork Room. Set the clocks for the correct time, and pass into the Room…of the Golden Torches! Light the correct torch, and open the door to the SHRIIIINE of the Silver Monkey! Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room…of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the correct inscription and shout it out to open the door to the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage. Slide down the tunnel to the Dungeon, where you could smash through the wall into the Dark Forest…but beware of the Temple Guards that may inhabit the trees! Find the key in the tree, and you’ll enter…the Snake Pit. Place the snakes in the hollow stump, and you’ll gain entry to the Atlantean Altar. Uncover the tile that lets in the waters of Atlantis, then…crawl through the Labyrinth, climb through the Ledges, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate! The choices are yours and yours alone!” Olmec pauses. “You won 2 Pendants in the Temple Games. Who’s going first?”

“I am,” says Marissa.

“Very well, Marissa,” Olmec replies. “When Kirk gives the signal, you’ll race through the Gates into the Temple and make your way toward the Model Heart of William Harvey. Hidden inside the Temple are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but…if you’re caught without a Pendant, you’ll be taken out of the Temple, and it’ll be Ezekiel’s turn to enter and try his luck. If you can reach the Model Heart, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the Gates with the Model Heart in three minutes, and you’ll both be handsomely rewarded…and here’s how!”

• Just for making it this far, they’ll get a sports package from Outdoor Products.
• If they can grab the Model Heart within three minutes, they’ll also receive an Xbox 360, complete with three new games.
• And if they can bring the Model Heart out of the Temple before three minutes expires, they’ll win a trip to Monterrey, California.

“All right, let’s see if the Orange Iguanas can win all that,” Kirk says. “Marissa, you need out in front here—both of you, mouthpieces in. Let’s set the clock for three minutes, please!” The clock slams down in the bottom right-hand corner, ready to go.

“Olmec, lower your gate, please.” Olmec moans gutturally as the gate is lowered, and the black lights under him go out.

“And Marissa, are you ready?” Kirk asks.
“Mm-hmm,” Marissa replies.
“On your mark,” Kirk begins, “get set, GO!”

Marissa trots up the stairs, clutching her Pendant. She soon enters the Crypt, where she pulls all three books. The second opens the door to the Ledges, but it’s the third pull that opens the door to the Rope Labyrinth, which prompts her to progress there (2:49). She enters the room and begins climbing through the ropes. “This girl plays basketball and softball—she knows how to get it done!” Kirk narrates via a voice-over. Marissa reaches the other side of the room, where she hits the actuator for the Clockwork Room. Obviously, the door doesn’t open (2:30). Marissa climbs up a bit higher and hits the actuator to the Magician’s Chamber, and the door opens. She enters the room, where she is immediately ambushed by the first TEMPLE GUARD (2:21). “Ah—Temple Guard!” the “Kirk-over” says. “But she’s got a Pendant, so she can keep on going!” Marissa hands her Pendant over, and the Temple Guard exits the room. Marissa heads to the front of the room, where she pushes down on the rightmost hat; however, nothing happens. When she pushes down on the middle hat, a small white stuffed rabbit jumps out, and a squeaky, helium-esque voice shouts “Tah-dah!” Marissa pulls the stuffed rabbit out of the hat, and the door to the Room of the Golden Torches opens. She tosses the rabbit aside and continues (2:08).

After taking the ridiculously long gold-tipped scepter from its holding platform at the back of the Room of the Golden Torches, Marissa proceeds to the torches themselves. She touches the middle torch, and it lights up a bright gold, but nothing else happens. She moves on to the leftmost torch and lights it, but again, nothing happens. When she lights the rightmost torch, the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey finally flies open (1:38). “Just under two minutes left, and still just the one Temple Guard!” Kirk narrates via voice-over. “But Ezekiel could have to take off at any moment!” The camera shows Ezekiel, clapping politely and cheering “You can do it!” Marissa is seen with all three pieces of the monkey at the front of the Shrine. She places the base (1:21), the middle (1:15), and after a little difficulty aligning it, jams down the head, opening the doors to both the Room of the Secret Password and the Dark Forest (1:06). Marissa must not see the open door to the Dark Forest, because she enters the Room of the Secret Password instead. She enters the room, but before she can open a cabinet, out of the secret door at the back of the room comes the second TEMPLE GUARD (1:00).

“Whoa, Temple Guard! Go, Ezekiel!” a now-live Kirk says, and Ezekiel takes off, bolting through the Crypt. He gets his foot caught in one of the ropes in the Rope Labyrinth, but recovers quickly and keeps going, following Marissa’s path exactly. “This guy runs a mile each day—if anybody can reach that Heart, it’s him!” Kirk narrates. Ezekiel reaches the Shrine (0:41), but completely bypasses the shortcut to the Dark Forest, instead entering the Room of the Secret Password. He opens the cabinet closest to him, pulls out the tablet, and with his mouthpiece still in, screams “Open sesame!” After a few seconds of hesitation, the door to the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage opens. “Open sesame, is that it…yes! He’s got the door open!” Kirk narrates. Ezekiel slides down the Passage and soon appears in the Dungeon (0:20), where he smashes through the breakaway wall into the Dark Forest. “Twenty seconds left—he’s gonna have to really hustle now!” Kirk exclaims. Ezekiel reaches into the stage-left tree in search of a key, but one of the tree’s arms reaches out and grabs him—it’s a TEMPLE SPIRIT (0:09). “Ah, Temple Guard!” Kirk says as Ezekiel reaches for his Pendant. “Give him the Pendant—hurry!” Ezekiel hands over his Pendant, and pulls a key out of the hole at the same time. He heads over to open the door to the Snake Pit, but time expires before it can open.

“Oh, he ran out of time!” Kirk laments. “He found the key, but he couldn’t reach the Heart Room in time! This was a tough Temple—but that’s okay; they still get the sports package for playing anyway. We’ve gotta get out of here—I don’t want to, but we’ve got to anyway. We’ll see you next time, and just remember: it’s not just Legends, it’s Legends: Rebirth! Buh-bye!”

Ezekiel emerges from the Temple, and he, Kirk and Marissa chat with one another as the credits roll. The camera shows close-ups of numerous rooms, including the Dungeon, the Dark Forest, and the Snake Pit before the Stone Stanley logo appears onscreen.

The Model Heart of William Harvey
Season 1, Layout 5
Artifact Location
: The Clockwork Room
Team: Orange Iguanas (Marissa Cline & Ezekiel Rodgers)
Pendants: 2
Result: Ran out of time

Meh…this episode was pretty good. The Temple design was absolutely brutal, but at least the team running made it quite exciting.

Marissa wasn’t the greatest player in the world, but she did okay. Even though she was a little on the slow side, she did make it all the way to the Shrine, where she didn’t notice that the door to the Dark Forest had opened downward. Instead, she went into the Room of the Secret Password, where she was taken out with a mere minute left.

Mr. “I-need-a-tan” Ezekiel was pretty fast, and knew what to do in each room he entered. He made it to where Marissa was taken out in only about twenty seconds, but unfortunately, he didn’t see the Shrine-Dark Forest shortcut, either. He took the long way around, making it to the Dark Forest, where the third Temple Guard was waiting. As he tried to open the door to the Snake Pit, time expired.

If Marissa had noticed the open door to the Dark Forest, she’d have been taken out there. This might have given Ezekiel enough of an opportunity to reach the Model Heart. But it would’ve taken a very fast team to rack up a win here, and this team just wasn’t fast enough.

Rating: 6 out of 10

Notes and Trivia: When the Temple Spirit grabs Ezekiel in the Dark Forest, only one “arm” moves.

Unlike the episodes before it, this episode doesn’t feature any “player background” information given by Kirk before the Temple Games—one of only three from Season 1 to do so.

This run is narrated by Kirk via a voice-over up until the point Marissa is captured by the second Temple Guard.

Judging by his whitish-blond hair, almost colorless eyes, and pasty white skin, does anyone else think Ezekiel was an albino? :P

17-17 in the second Temple Game?

After the little foreshadowing in the last episode, I had a feeling there'd be a good amount of central-shaft Temple Runs coming up, and so far, so accurate. :P If you need to take a break because of exams, I understand, but I hope to read the last of Season 1 soon~

The Temple Run reminds of "Ponce de Leon and the Lost Fountain of Youth" in a way. Same artifact location, same temple design, and both frontrunners missed the open Shrine-Golden Doors room door.

True, but EVERY player missed that door whenever they had to go into the center room from underneath. :P I kinda thought of "Scheherazade" mixed with "Tokugawa" (considering the decision Marissa made), but it was still very good.
