Episode 14: The Lost Blueprints of Charles Babbage

The camera winds and twists its way through a thick jungle of strange and exotic plants. After a few wrong turns, it finally stops in front of an ancient Mayan temple. At the base of the temple, a giant stone head sits. Suddenly, the head’s eyes light up and it begins to speak:

“Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth!” These words appear on the screen. “With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is now!”

A middle-aged man wearing a denim shirt and blue jeans swings in on a rope. He drops down and runs up the Steps of Knowledge, microphone in hand.

“Thank you! Thank you, everybody! Nice to see everyone again! It’s good to see you again, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth. The rooms are filled with lost treasures protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legends behind each of these newly discovered treasures in his Temple…which one are we gonna hear about today, Olmec?”

“The legend of the Lost Blueprints of Charles Babbage,” Olmec replies.

“Oh, the Lost Blueprints of Charles Babbage,” Kirk replies. “Well, the legend is set, and one of these teams will have a chance to retrieve the lost blueprints—will it be:

“The Red Jaguars?” The camera zooms in on each team as they are introduced.
“The Blue Barracudas?
“The Green Monkeys?
“The Orange Iguanas?
“The Purple Parrots?
“Or the Silver Snakes?

“They’ll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests, but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter the Temple. But first, let’s find out how they’ll have to cross the Moat today. Olmec!”

Olmec begins to explain the Moat Crossing:
“Before you, a long rope hangs into the Moat. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will swim out to the rope, grab it, swim back with it, and swing across. Once you’re safely across, throw the rope to your partner, who will then swing across in the same way. If your feet touch the water while you’re swinging, you must go back and start again. Once both players reach the other side, run over and hit the gong.” Kirk hits the Silver Snakes’ gong to demonstrate. “The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round!”

“All right, let’s get started,” Kirk says. “Hey teams, are you ready?”
All six teams scream and cheer in response.
“Olmec, are you ready?” Kirk asks.
“Let’s rock,” Olmec replies.
“All right,” Kirk says. “On your mark, get set, GO!!”

All six teams jump into the Moat and grab the rope. The Blue Barracudas’ boy is first back, followed closely by the Purple Parrots’ boy and the Green Monkeys’ girl. The other teams make it back as these three players swing across successfully. They throw their ropes to their partners as the other three teams all swing across successfully. “This is neck-and-neck—I’ve never seen it so close!” Kirk narrates. All the teams’ second players successfully swing across except the Silver Snakes’ girl, whose feet just barely touch the water. All five of the other teams make it across, and the Red Jaguars, Blue Barracudas, Purple Parrots, and Orange Iguanas are the first four to hit their gongs, in that order. The entire Moat takes only fourteen seconds.

“That’s it!” Kirk shouts as he runs over to stand beside the Purple Parrots. “That was fast—blazing fast! The Purple Parrots had no problem getting across, just like that, and going on to the Steps of Knowledge are the Purple Parrots…and also the Orange Iguanas,” Kirk pauses between each team’s name to allow for applause. “And the Blue Barracudas, and the Red Jaguars! The Green Monkeys and Silver Snakes were so close, but they came up just a little bit short. We’ve got a great give—gift for ‘em, and here’s what it is!” They receive a $50 gift certificate from FYE.

Kirk and the remaining four teams are now standing atop the Steps of Knowledge. “As the quest continues, it’s time now for Olmec to tell us about the Lost Blueprints of Charles Babbage. But teams, pay attention, because your knowledge of the legend can and will bring you a step closer to Olmec’s Temple…”

Olmec begins to tell the story:
“One of the most brilliant scientists of all time was Charles Babbage. He was a professor at Cambridge University in England, and was reportedly disappointed at the math curriculum there. As a result, he and several of his friends formed a team of top-grade instructors known as the Analytical Society. Legend has it that one day, Charles became frustrated with the amount of human error involved in grading the students’ papers.
“‘If only we had some type of machine that could do it for us,’ Charles said to his friend John Herschel.
“‘What are you going to do about it?’ asked John. ‘Invent one?’
“‘You know, I think I will.’
“And with that, Charles set to work making blueprints for a device that could calculate large amounts of data in short periods of time. He worked night and day on it for years, and when the plans were finally complete, he revealed them to his friends.
“‘Gentlemen, I give you…the Analytical Machine!’
“‘This is what you’ve been working on all this time?’ asked his friend George Peacock.
“‘Yes,” replied Charles. “This machine can do the work of fifty people, with no error at all.’
“‘But Charles, how will we fund something this big?’ asked George.
“‘Well…I kind of hadn’t gotten to that yet.’
“Charles worked the rest of his life to accumulate enough money to fund his Analytical Machine, but he never made enough. Decades later, the blueprints for Charles’ machine were discovered and used to build the very first computer. Today, computers are used in almost everything, but Charles himself has been largely forgotten. His original blueprints, however, ended up in the Temple. Your quest is to find the Lost Blueprints of Charles Babbage and bring them back here.”

“All right, thanks, Olmec,” says Kirk. “So tell us, where are these blueprints?”

“The Lost Blueprints of Charles Babbage can be found in the Chamber…of the Sacred Markers,” Olmec replies. The camera zooms in on the rolled-up blueprints stuck on the Temple Guard door at the back of the room, and then cuts back to Kirk.

“Ooh,” Kirk replies. “Teams, you’re now standing on the Steps of Knowledge. In just a minute, Olmec’s gonna ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, stomp down on that ancient marking there in front of you. If you’re right, you’ll be able to move down one level, but if you’re wrong or you run out of time, I’ll give the other teams a chance to answer.” Kirk begins descending the Steps. “The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec’s Temple. Okay, Olmec…we’re ready for your first question.”

Olmec begins:
“Was Charles Babbage a professor at: Oxford, Cambridge, or—”
The Blue Barracudas ring in. “Cambridge?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Blue Barracudas step down to the next level.
“Blue Barracudas, step down,” Kirk narrates. “This is just the beginning, though—next question, Olmec.”

“Charles and his friends formed a team of instructors. Was it called: the Mathematical Society, the Analytical Society, or the Computational Society?”
The Blue Barracudas ring in again. “The Analytical Society?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Blue Barracudas advance to the next-to-last step.
“Blue Barracudas are already only one step away from the Temple Games,” Kirk narrates. “Could they go all the way, or will somebody else take it? Next question.”

“According to our legend, what did Charles become frustrated about—”
The Blue Barracudas ring in yet again. “Human error…grading papers?”
“That…is correct!” Olmec booms. The Blue Barracudas leap down to the bottom.
“And just like that, the Blue Barracudas are goin’ on to the Temple Games!” Kirk narrates. “But we need one more team—who’s it gonna be: the Purple Parrots, the Orange Iguanas, or the Red Jaguars? Next question, please.”

“What did Charles call his invention—”
The Red Jaguars ring in prematurely. “…A computer?”
“That is not one of our three choices,” Olmec explains. “The three choices are: the Computational Machine, the Analytical Machine, or the Sewing Machine?”
The Orange Iguanas ring in. “Analytical Machine?”
“That is correct,” Olmec exclaims. The Orange Iguanas step down to the next level.
“Sometimes it pays to hear all the question,” Kirk explains. “Next question.”

“What were the blueprints from Charles’ Analytical Machine used to build—”
The Orange Iguanas ring in again. “The first computer.”
“That is correct,” Olmec booms. The Orange Iguanas advance down one level.
“And now it’s the Orange Iguanas who are only one step away,” Kirk narrates. “There’s still plenty of time for you guys, though. Next question, Olmec.”

“The main part of a computer is called the CPU. What does ‘CPU’ stand for: Calculating Portional Unit, Central Processing Unit, or Computer’s Pretty Useless?”
The Orange Iguanas ring in. “Central Processing Unit?”
“That is correct!” Olmec exclaims. The Orange Iguanas step down to the bottom.

“Just like that, we have our two teams for the Temple Games!” Kirk shouts as he runs over to stand between the two teams. “It’s the Blue Barracudas, and the Orange Iguanas! Red Jaguars, Purple Parrots, come on down here, guys. You guys were great, too. We have a great gift for you guys, too, and here’s what it is.” They receive Pokémon Ranger for the Nintendo DS Lite.

Kirk is seen standing between the two advancing teams. “These two teams will be playing for the right to enter Olmec’s Temple, and they’ll do it right after this!” Kirk explains.

The camera runs along the edge of the Moat until it reaches the waterfall at the far end, then immediately turns to the left, showing a silk orchid plant as the title appears onscreen, and we go to a commercial.

We return from the break and see Kirk standing in front of the Temple with one team on either side of him.

“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “Now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest. But before that happens, let’s meet our two teams…

“On the Orange Iguanas, we have Lacey; she likes to shop and sing, and she wants to be a lawyer, and her partner is Mark; he plays baseball and he also likes to draw…let’s hear it for the Orange Iguanas!” The audience applauds for the short, brown-haired girl and the tall boy with a blonde buzz-cut.

“And on the Blue Barracudas, this is Whitney; she’s on the baton squad at her school and she wants to be a fashion designer, and her partner is Christopher; he likes to play football and he wants to be a professional wrestler…how ‘bout a hand for the Blue Barracudas?” The audience claps for the tall black-haired girl and the slightly taller brown-haired boy.

“Okay, is everybody ready?” Kirk asks the players.
“Yeah!” they reply.
“All right, everybody get to your places while I explain what’s happening here. In these Temple Games, our teams are competing for…” Kirk pulls a Pendant of Life from his pouch and holds it up to the camera. “…Pendants of Life. The winning team will need Pendants like this to protect them from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through Olmec’s Temple. There are three Temple Games. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #1…”

“You didn’t say the magic word,” Olmec says.

Kirk looks back at the camera with a 'you've got to be kidding me' look on his face.
“Please?” he asks.

“That’s better,” Olmec replies. The black lights under Olmec come on and he begins to explain the first Temple Game:
“During his lifetime, Charles Babbage worked to accumulate parts to build his Analytical Machine. You are about to help gather some parts for the machine as well. When Kirk gives the signal, jump up, grab a gear off the ceiling, come back down and place it in your bin. Then jump up, grab another gear and do it again. The first player to retrieve all their gears, or…the player with the most gears at the end of thirty seconds…wins.”

“This is exactly how they used to build computers,” Kirk jokes. “Let’s set the clock for thirty seconds!” The clock appears onscreen, all set to go. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Lacey is fairly consistent about grabbing her gears, and gets one each time she jumps. However, Whitney is consistent as well as slightly faster, and manages to get all eight gears with four seconds left on the clock.

“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk yells as he runs back onscreen. “There’s no need to count it up, because the Blue Barracudas got all their gears first. That means that they win the Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds. “The Orange Iguanas are behind for now, but they can catch up in this next Temple Game. It’s worth a half Pendant. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2…”

Olmec begins:
“If Charles had built his Analytical Machine, it might have needed daily repairs due to its large size and complex workings. In this game, you will be repairing some leaks in the Analytical Machine. When Kirk gives the signal, insert your peg into one of the holes before you. If you’ve successfully plugged the leak, nothing will happen; otherwise, you’ll be squirted with water. The player who successfully plugs the most leaks at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”

“I’ve never heard of a leaky computer before,” says Kirk. “Let’s put sixty seconds on the clock!” The clock appears onscreen, all ready to go. “Players, go ahead and make your first choice right now, please.” Christopher and Mark each insert their pegs into the pegboard. “All right…ready, set, SQUIRT!”

Christopher and Mark each get the first choice wrong, and both are squirted with water. Christopher gets the second choice correct, and Mark gets the fourth and fifth choice correct. Christopher manages to catch up in the second half of the game, though, getting four correct choices in a row. Both players are soaking-wet by the time the clock reaches zero.

“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk says. “The judges say that the Blue Barracudas plugged seven leaks, and the Orange Iguanas plugged five leaks, so the Blue Barracudas get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds. “Now the Blue Barracudas have one full Pendant to the Orange Iguanas’ zero. Now it’s time for the third and final Temple Game. It’s worth a full Pendant of Life. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3…”

Olmec begins to explain the final Temple Game:
“Over 100 years after Charles drew up his blueprints, they were discovered, and used to build the first computers. In this game, you will be deciphering these blueprints. When Kirk gives the signal, run out, grab the first part of the blueprints, come back and hand it to your partner, who will then run around, jump up and place it in the correct space on the board. Then run out and grab the next part of the blueprints. Along the way, you must avoid the swinging obstacles—if you’re hit, you must go back and try again. You also cannot run out to get another piece until your partner has placed the one you’ve brought back. The first team to successfully piece together the blueprints or…the team that’s further along after sixty seconds…wins.”

“This is for the Temple,” Kirk explains. “Let’s put sixty seconds on the clock, please!” The clock appears in the corner, all set to go. “Okay…let’s get the sandbags in place.” The spotters do just that. “Thank you…on your mark, get set, GO!”

Mark and Christopher are both fast, and both bring back the first quarter of the blueprints quite quickly and hand them off to Lacey and Whitney, who are both strapped into a rotating lever. The girls jump up and place their team’s piece in the correct space on the board, and the boys run back to get the second piece. Mark gets hit, but Christopher brings back the second piece, which Whitney places on the board with about 20 seconds left. The Blue Barracudas are just getting their third piece in place by the time the game ends.

“That’s it!” Kirk shouts as he runs back onscreen. “Everybody, come back over here. That game was tough…let’s see how each team did. It looks like the Blue Barracudas got three out of the four parts, and…the Orange Iguanas only got two, so the Blue Barracudas get the full Pendant of Life. That means the Blue Barracudas have two Pendants; the Orange Iguanas don’t have any—the Blue Barracudas are goin’ to the Temple!” Christopher and Whitney, still strapped into her lever, high-five one another in celebration. “Orange Iguanas, you guys come over here. You guys were great, too; you had some tough competition over here. We’ve got a great gift for ‘em, and here’s what it is!” They receive a backpack from Outdoor Products.

As the prize disappears off-screen, Kirk is seen standing beside the winning team. “Now we’ll see if the Blue Barracudas can make it through Olmec’s Temple and retrieve the Lost Blueprints of Charles Babbage, right after this!” The camera pans in on the Temple and zooms in on the Lost Blueprints as the title appears onscreen, and we go to a commercial.

We return from the break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the winning team.

“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “Whitney and Christopher have proven they’re worthy, and have now earned the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, Olmec’s gonna give them a little information to help them to retrieve the Lost Blueprints of Charles Babbage…”

Olmec begins to explain the layout as the camera gives us a first-person tour of the Temple:
“You could start…by running up the stairs to the Crypt! Grab the book from the skeletons, and pass into the Rope Labyrinth! Maneuver through the ropes, and climb into the Great Seal Room. Place the correct seal in the central holder, and a door may open into the Chamber…of the Sacred Markers. Match the symbols on the right to those on the left, and pass into the Safari Room. Push in the correct animal head and open the door to the SHRIIIINE of the Silver Monkey! Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room…of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the correct inscription and shout it out to open the door to the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage. Slide down the tunnel to the Dungeon, where you could smash through the wall into the Dark Forest…but beware of the Temple Guards that may inhabit the trees! Find the key in the tree, and you’ll enter…the Bamboo Forest! Maneuver through the thicket, and you’ll gain entry to the Tomb of the Headless Kings. Pull the vine to release the bones, and attach the missing skull to its proper king, then…crawl through the Labyrinth, climb through the Ledges, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone!” Olmec pauses. “You won 2 Pendants in the Temple Games. Who’s going first?”

“I am,” says Whitney, raising her hand.

“Very well, Whitney,” Olmec replies. “When Kirk gives the signal, you’ll race through the gate into the Temple and make your way toward the Lost Blueprints. Hidden inside the Temple are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but—if you’re caught without a Pendant, you’ll be taken out of the Temple, and it’ll be Christopher’s turn to enter and try his luck. If you can reach the Blueprints, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the Gate with the Lost Blueprints of Charles Babbage in three minutes, and you’ll both be handsomely rewarded—and here’s how!”

• Just for making it this far, they’ll get a bicycle from Mongoose.
• If they can grab the Lost Blueprints within three minutes, they’ll also receive a DVD player from Sony.
• And if they can bring the Blueprints out of the Temple before three minutes expires, they’ll win a trip to Monterrey, California.

“Monterrey, California…I’ve been there before, it’s great,” Kirk remarks. “Let’s see if they can make it back and win that trip. Okay, Christopher, tell me, do you and Whitney have a strategy to bring back the Lost Blueprints?”

“Yeah,” begins Christopher, “we’re just gonna try to go around the Temple and double back, ‘cause…I’ve seen this done before, and…it’s usually pretty tough to get to something when it’s in the Chamber of Sacred Markers…”

“Sounds like he knows what he’s talking about,” observes Kirk. “Let’s see if they can do it. Both of you, get your mouthpieces in. Let’s set the clock for three minutes!” The clock appears at the bottom of the screen, all set to go.

“Olmec, lower your gate, if you please.” Olmec moans gutturally as the gate is lowered, and the black lights under him go out.

“Ready, Whitney?” Kirk asks.

“I’m ready,” Whitney says as she gives a thumbs-up.

“Okay,” Kirk replies. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Whitney runs up the steps and soon disappears behind Olmec. She slides down into the Ledges (2:53) and begins climbing through the room. After stalling for a few seconds, she hits the actuator for the Rope Labyrinth, opening the door (2:42). She enters the room and scrambles to the other side. She immediately climbs up and tries the actuator for the door to the Chamber of the Sacred Markers, which of course, won’t open (2:35). “She’ll have to go the long way around, it looks to me!” Kirk narrates. She drops down to try the actuator for door to the Tomb of the Headless Kings, which does open (2:30). “Now she’s headed into the Tomb of Ancient Kings!” Kirk narrates. Whitney steps into the room, where the first TEMPLE GUARD immediately jumps out, his arms outstretched (2:27). “Oh, a Temple Guard!” Kirk narrates. “He wants that Pendant of Life!” Whitney hands over her Pendant, and the Temple Guard slinks back into the shadows of the room. Whitney pulls the rope, releasing the bones from the trapdoors into the room. She looks around for a few seconds, trying to find the skull, but can’t seem to find it. “There it is!” narrates Kirk when she finally finds it. Whitney places the skull on the stage-right king, but nothing happens (2:12). She tries the stage-left king, and its torso begins glowing red, opening the door into the Bamboo Forest (2:08). “That’s got it! Over to the Bamboo Forest!” Kirk narrates. Whitney climbs into the room, falling on her rear end in the process. She gets up, and we see the second TEMPLE GUARD jump out from hiding (2:03).

“Oh, second Temple Guard! Go, Christopher!” Kirk narrates, and Christopher darts up the stairs. He slides down into the Ledges, scrambles through, and enters the Rope Labyrinth (1:57). He darts through the Tomb of the Headless Kings, enters the Bamboo Forest, and begins climbing to the other side (1:51). He makes it, and hits the actuator to the Dark Forest, opening it (1:46). “Now he’s headed into the Dark Forest!” narrates Kirk. “He’ll have to stick his hands into the trees to find a key!” Christopher enters the room and does just that, trying the stage-right tree first. However, he comes out empty-handed (1:34). He tries the stage-left tree, and after a few seconds of fumbling, comes out with a key (1:27). “He found a key!” Kirk narrates. “But where does it lead?” Christopher tries the rightmost golden door at the back of the room, but nothing happens. He tries the middle one, and this time, the golden doors open (1:23). “That’s it! That’s the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey!” narrates Kirk. Christopher climbs up the hidden ladder into the room, emerging in it several seconds later. Christopher runs to the back of the room, grabs all three pieces of the statue, and brings them back to the front of the room (1:11). He places the base (1:08), middle (1:02) and head (0:58), opening the doors to both the Room of the Secret Password and the Safari Room. Christopher decides to go right, and enters the Safari Room, but as he does, the third TEMPLE GUARD emerges (0:55). “Oh, that’s the last Temple Guard!” Kirk narrates. “Good thing he’s got a Pendant!” Christopher hands his Pendant over and runs to push in the leopard’s head, but nothing happens. He pushes in the rhino’s head, but again, nothing happens. He pushes in the huge elephant head in the back of the room, and this time, the doors to both the Great Seal Room and the Chamber of the Sacred Markers open (0:45). He dashes into the latter room and grabs the LOST BLUEPRINTS (0:40).

“He’s got the Blueprints! All the doors are open!” Kirk narrates. Christopher enters the Rope Labyrinth and frantically climbs down to the bottom of the room (0:35). He dashes over to enter the Ledges and begins climbing through them. “Thirty-two seconds—will he make it?” Kirk asks. The camera shows Whitney, shouting “Come on, Chris!” Christopher nears the entrance to Ledges, clutching the Blueprints (0:26). He throws them out of the Ledges, climbs out himself, picks the Blueprints back up, and darts through the Temple Gate with twenty-one seconds left on the clock.

“He did it!” Kirk shouts as a fanfare of trumpets plays. “He made it out! They won it all! They got the bike, the DVD player—they’re goin’ to the Bahamas!” Whitney and Christopher hug one another as Kirk pats them both on the shoulders. “This team was amazing—they did a super job today! We’ve gotta get outta here, though. We’ll see ya next time, though, and until then, just remember—it’s not just Legends, it’s Legends: Rebirth! Buh-bye, everybody!”

Kirk and Whitney wave to the crowd and Christopher shows off the Blueprints, holding them aloft as the credits roll.

Awesome—that’s the only word I can use to describe this Temple Run. This highly exciting Run is one of the best I’ve ever seen on Legends: Rebirth. Despite the fact that the artifact was in the central room of the Temple, fast players, lucky breaks and an extremely straightforward design came together to make a win for this team.

Whitney stalled in about half the rooms she entered, but luckily, those rooms were only four in number. Even though she tried to make a beeline for the artifact at first (grrr…), she was quick to hand over her Pendant in the Tomb of the Headless Kings, and made fairly good time. She was taken out in the Bamboo Forest with a healthy 2:03 to go.

Christopher was a very smart player, as evidenced by his pre-run interview. He was fast, too—with the 2:03 that he had to work with, he only took twelve seconds of it to get to where Whitney was taken out. He discovered a shortcut in the Dark Forest by finding the key to go up to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey, as opposed to simply breaking into the Dungeon, which is probably what most players in his situation would have done. He put the monkey together in an amazing thirteen seconds, and grabbed the Lost Blueprints with forty seconds left on the clock. He only needed about half of that time to get out, though, and scored the win with 21 seconds to spare. A great ending to the “Layout 1” episodes of Rebirth.

Rating: 9 out of 10

Notes and Trivia: This is the last episode of Rebirth that uses Layout 1 of the Temple. In addition, it’s the fourth time overall that the Blue Barracudas make it to the Temple, and the second time the team wins, making the Blue Barracudas the only team to rack up more than one win in Layout 1 of the Temple.

This episode’s Moat Crossing is the fastest on Rebirth to date, lasting a mere fourteen seconds.

How funny was the third choice to the last question Olmec asked on the Steps of Knowledge?

This is the only episode that features a third Temple Game I like to call “The Swinging Sandbag-Rotating Lever Extravaganza”, which combined the swinging sandbag game with the rotating lever game. Future time constraints probably led to this game’s discontinuation—if the teams had gotten, say, ninety seconds instead of only sixty, someone could probably have completed the game.
