The camera makes its way through lush greenery, and the palms move away as ambient animal noises are heard. Portions of a temple are shown, and suddenly the jungle ends, and we see Olmec?s face light up and shout, ?LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE!?

The show?s title card?a pendant of life?crashes together on the screen, and the camera shifts to focus on the temple and its rooms. ?With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is now!?

The pendant splinters and Kirk is seen crawling out of the Jungle Crevice to run right into the center of the stage and up the Steps of Knowledge as he begins his narration.

?Thank you, thank you!? says Kirk. ?It's nice to see you! Thank you, Olmec. Welcome to the Hidden Temple. The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple. Which one are we going to hear about today??

Olmec replies, ?The Legend of The Original Book of Marco Polo!?

?Ooh, The Original Book of Marco Polo!? says Kirk. ?Well, the legend is set and one of these six teams will have the chance to retrieve the book. Will it be The Red Jaguars??

At this point, the camera focuses on each team as they are introduced.

?The Blue Barracudas??
?The Green Monkeys??
?The Orange Iguanas??
?The Purple Parrots??
?Or the Silver Snakes??

?They?re going to have to pass some tough mental and physical tests,? continues Kirk, ?and in the end, only one team will have the right to enter Olmec?s temple, but first they have to cross the moat, and Olmec?s gonna tell us how they have to do it today.?

Olmec instructs:
?Before you lies an ancient rod that has fallen across the Moat. When Kirk gives the signal, one player will hang from the rod by their hands and feet, and shinny across to the other side. Once the first partner is safely across, the second partner can cross the same way. When both partners reach the other side, run over and hit the gong!?

Kirk hits the Silver Snakes? gong to demonstrate, which?in turn?lights up a bright silver.

?The first four teams to hit their gong will go on to the next round,? finishes Olmec. ?Okay?teams?are you ready??

The teams excitedly reply, ?Yeeaahhhh!?

Kirk then asks, ?Olmec, are you ready??

?Let?s roll,? replies Olmec.

?Alrighty then,? says Kirk, ?teams?on your marks, get set, GO!?

Less than five seconds into the round, the Blue Barracudas and the Silver Snakes hit the Moat on their backs, but the Green Monkeys and the Orange Iguanas just cruise along the rod at a good speed. ?Green Monkeys really got the hang of it,? comments Kirk as the Blue Barracudas fall into the Moat again. ?It?s slippery out there, though?? Before Kirk finishes, the Green Monkeys splash into the water less than 10 inches away from the other end, and the Orange Iguanas and the Purple Parrots begin to send their second players over instead.
The Green Monkey boy just shoots across the Moat on his second try, making it across shortly, while Blue Barracudas and Silver Snakes begin to send their second player over, but they?re not fast enough to beat? ?THE ORANGE IGUANAS!? yells Kirk right as they gong in. Moments later, the Silver Snakes gong in along with the Purple Parrots as they fog begins to disappear. ?It?s neck and neck now,? says Kirk, ?who?s going to be the last team?blue or green? Blue or green? Blue or?IT?S THE GREEN MONKEYS!? shouts Kirk right as the Green Monkeys slam the gong together. The Red Jaguars are seen still struggling, with the Moat now clear of the mist.

?We?ve got our four teams going on to the Steps of Knowledge! They are The Silver Snakes?and The Purple Parrots?and The Orange Iguanas?and the Green Monkeys. The Blue Barracudas and the Red Jaguars did a great job too, but they?re not going away empty handed. We?ve got a great gift for them, and here?s what it is!?

The screen transitions to a shot of the four teams atop the Steps of Knowledge. ?As the quest continues,? says Kirk, ?it?s now time for Olmec to tell us about The Original Book of Marco Polo. But teams?pay attention, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you a step closer to Olmec?s temple.?

Olmec narrates the legend:
?One of the most famous explorers that travelled thru Asia was Marco Polo. He was a Venetian, heading far from home as he travelled along the renowned Silk Road all the way to China, where he met the great Kublai Khan. Travelling across the continent and staying for 24 years, Marco Polo decided to write a book on his travels, and it still remains today as The Travels of Marco Polo. When he returned to his hometown, he fought in a war for Venice, but was imprisoned. This didn?t stop his book from growing more and more popular still. After he died, Marco Polo?s book was still copied by hand, and in the process, fabricated varied versions of the book. One of the early and most accurate versions of the book made its way to the temple. Your task is to find the Original Book of Marco Polo and bring it back here.?

?Thank you, Olmec,? says Kirk after a short pause, ?so tell us?where is the Original Book??

?The Original Book of Marco Polo can be found?in The Mouth of the Jaguar,? replies Olmec. A spotlight focuses on the large scroll placed inside the statue?s mouth as the camera zooms in on it.

?Okay then,? continues Kirk, ?teams?you are now standing on the Steps of Knowledge. In a minute, Olmec?s gonna ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you. If you?re right, you?ll move down to the next level, but if you?re wrong or run out of time, I?m gonna have to give the other teams a chance to answer. The first two teams that make it to the bottom level?will be one step closer to Olmec?s temple. Olmec, we?re now ready for your first question??

Olmec asks:  ?Was Marco Polo?Italian, Venetian, or German??

The Silver Snakes buzz in: ?Venetian???

?That?is correct,? replies Olmec. ?Alright, step down!? says Kirk motioning for the Silver Snakes to move down to the second step. ?Next question??

Olmec asks: ?Was the trade route that??

The Green Monkeys stomp down first: ?Uh?through Asia??

?That is not one of our three choices,? replies Olmec. The Purple Parrots guess: ?The Silk Road???

?That is correct,? declares Olmec. ?Step down, Purple Parrots!? says Kirk as the Purple Parrots move down a step to join the Silver Snakes. ?Okay, Olmec?next question!?

Olmec asks: ?Was Marco Polo imprisoned?during his travels, during a robbery, or during a war??

The Purple Parrots answer: ?During a war!?

?That is correct,? replies Olmec. ?Just like that, the Purple Parrots are one step away from the temple games!? says Kirk. ?Plenty of time, plenty of questions left?Olmec, next question.?

Olmec asks: ?Did Marco Polo meet?Genghis Khan, Kublai Khan, or??

The Purple Parrots interrupt: ?Uh, Kublai Khan!?

?That is correct!? shouts Olmec, as the energetic team jumps down to the bottom step. ?We?ve got our first team going onto the Temple Games!? yells Kirk. ?Still got room for one more?will it be the Silver Snakes, the Orange Iguanas, or the Green Monkeys? Next question??

Olmec asks: ?Was Marco Polo?s book called??

The Silver Snakes stomp down: ?The Travels of Marco Polo!?

?That is correct!? says Olmec, as the Silver Snakes move down to the third step. ?Okay, they?re almost there!? says Kirk. ?Olmec, next question.?

Olmec asks: ?According to legend, was his stories reproduced?with a copy machine, by hand??

The Silver Snakes ring in: ?They were copied by hand!?

?THAT IS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!? yells Olmec, allowing The Silver Snakes to jump  down to the bottom step. ?We have our two teams!? shouts Kirk. ?They are?The Silver Snakes?and the Purple Parrots! The Green Snakes and the Orange Iguanas never even got a chance to answer, but we?re gonna give ?em a great gift?here?s what it is??

Dee reads the prize:
?A savings bond from?Sketchers Footwear. Makers of fun, exciting, cool shoes, sneakers, and boots! Sketchers?it?s the ?S?!?

The screen wipes to reveal Kirk with his hands on the two remaining teams? shoulders. ?These two teams are going to be competing for the rights to enter Olmec?s temple?right after this!? The camera pans from the Mining Chamber, to Olmec, and finally to the audience?zooms in, and then fades to commercial after the show?s title card joins and crashes in the middle of the screen.

The screen reappears as the pendant of life splits and the camera zooms out from The Shrine of the Silver Monkey, then turns around to focus on the Temple Games Equipment on the stage.

?Welcome back to Legends,? says Kirk, standing  in front of The Jungle Crevice with the two teams. ?Now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest?so let?s hear it for Jon and Jessica of the Silver Snakes! And Wesley and Tara of the Purple Parrots!?

?You guys ready to play?? asks Kirk. The players nod in response. ?Alright, then go get ready, and I?ll tell ya what?s gonna happen here?? The players walk off in different directions, as Kirk continues his narration. ?In the temple games, teams are competing for pendants of life?? Kirk grabs a pendant out of his pouch and holds it up to the camera. ?The winning team will need those pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded temple guards, as they make their way through the temple. There are three temple games, and Olmec will tell us about Temple Game #1.?

Olmec explains:
?Marco Polo was imprisoned when he fought in a war for Venice. In this game, you?ll try to escape the prison?with your secret bag of stolen gold! When Kirk gives the signal, crawl across the floor and push the rubble out of your way. When you get to the end, climb down to the next level and do it again. When you escape from the prison, pull the sack of gold till it comes out of the maze. The first team to bring their gold out of the prison, or the player that?s further along at the end of 60 seconds wins.?

?Stolen gold, how could you make them do that, Olmec?? asks Kirk jokingly, getting a good laugh out of the audience. ?Ha, okay?anyway?let?s put 60 seconds on the clock!?

The clock ?bangs? down into the bottom-right corner of the screen. ?On your marks, get set?GO!? Jon and Wesley immediately push the first boulder out of their way and begin their crawl across the top level of the maze. ?It?s neck-and-neck at this point?? says Kirk right as Jon knocks his head into a boulder in his way and Wesley takes advantage of Jon?s disadvantage. ?Okay, their onto the second level down?? About 20 seconds pass and Wesley still has a very nice lead, moving onto the third level with Jon still halfway down the second. ?It looks like Wesley could pull this off,? commentates Kirk. ?Oh, my?it?s getting close!? Jon seems to be good at catching up, because both of them exit the maze just seconds apart with Wesley crawling out with 15 seconds left. ?Alright!? yells Kirk, ?12 seconds left! PULL!? The boys begin pulling the ropes, and the sacks both pop out at around the same time, but clearly The Purple Parrots still managed to use their slight lead.

?It?s over! It?s over?? Kirk ends the game a little bit abruptly as the clock continues to count until there?s only about 2 seconds left. ?The Purple Parrots had a very slight lead, but?they get the half pendant of life! The Silver Snakes can catch up in the next game?it?s worth a half-pendant as well; Olmec, tell us about it!?

Olmec narrates:
?In explorations long ago, most of the explorer?s ?team? often died off before they reached their destination. In this game, we?ll see how far you?ll get on your journey. When Kirk gives the signal, run up to the slippery footpath, jump onto the track and slide all the way down. The player to slide the farthest?wins.?

?Well let?s?? Kirk is interrupted by Olmec: ?If you fall off, your opponents automatically win!? After a short pause, Kirk continues, ?Well, let?s see how far they?ll get on this exploration. Okay, get ready?on your marks, get set, GO!?

The two girls take a good run-up and attempt to land on their bellies?but Jessica almost lands on her knees instead. As a result, she uses her hands to break her fall, and slows down rapidly?while Tara pulls way ahead sliding to about halfway down the entire pathway before stopping.

?That?s it, just like that!? says Kirk, running over to the players. ?So?the, um?Purple Parrots got further than the Silver Snakes, so they get another half-pendant! So that gives them one, the Silver Snakes don?t have any yet?but that can change in our next game; Olmec, tell us about it.?

Olmec continues:
?The Silk Road was one of Marco Polo?s routes to Asia, but it was also a very important trade route! In this game, you?ll have to do some trading yourselves. When Kirk gives the signal, grab a silk cloth, and then crawl along the path. At the same time, your partner will grab a bag of spices, and crawl out to the middle of the path. Once you two meet, exchange objects, and slide back to your baskets and place them in. The team with the most successful trades at the end of 60 seconds wins.?

?Tradin? silk for spices!? says a fired-up Kirk. ?Let?s put 60 seconds on the clock!?

The clock crashes down in the screen?s corner once again. ?On your marks, get set, GO!? Tara runs out, but her light figure ends up being a disadvantage when she?s catapulted backward by the bungee cord. The Silver Snakes make one exchange, and the spotters flip one of their cards over. Tara seems to have learned how to control her cord, but their pace is only about three-fourths the speed of The Silver Snakes. 20 seconds  pass, and the Silver Snakes are still pulling ahead with ?3? on their scoreboard, while the Purple Parrots still try and work up to get their third. It?s basically like this for the next 30 seconds?until Tara gets shot back to the start again when they?re about to crawl back out for the fifth time, allowing the Silver Snakes to pull ahead again?but time is up!

?That?s it! Time?s up, stop?? Kirk runs over to Tara and Jessica on the stage-right end of the elevated pathways. ?Okay, so let?s check out our score?the Purple Parrots made 4 exchanges, while the Silver Snakes made 7 exchanges, so they came back and won the full pendant of life! That gives each of the teams a full pendant?it?s a tie! Let?s bring out the tiebreaker pedestal??

The spotters wheel in the tiebreaker pedestal, and Kirk motions for the teams, who are getting unhooked, to stand behind their respective podiums. ?Alright,? continues Kirk, ?here are your tiebreaker rules. In a minute, Olmec?s going to ask you a question about the Legend. If you think you know the answer, hit the gong in front of you. You?ll have three seconds to answer and I must accept your first response. If you?re right, you and your partner will be going to the Temple in search of The Original Book of Marco Polo, but if you?re wrong or you run out of time, I'm gonna give the other teams a chance. All clear??

The teams nod in response, and Kirk asks, ?Olmec?what is your final question??

Olmec asks: ?The other name for Marco Polo?s book??

The Silver Snakes slam down on their gong: ?The Travels of Marco Polo!?

?That is incorrect,? replies Olmec, and the Silver Snakes groan loudly. ?Alright, Purple Parrots?? asks Kirk, as he holds his microphone up to them. ?Could he finish the question?? Tara asks, looking worried.

?Olmec, please finish your question?? says Kirk, but is cut off by Olmec?s response: ?The other name for Marco Polo?s book is I-Milione. Does this translate into?million, miles, or merlions??

The Purple Parrots unnecessarily gong in, but answer: ?Million???

?THAT IS CORRECT!? shouts Olmec. ?Whoa,? says Kirk, ?The Purple Parrots are going to the temple! Silver Snakes, you gave it a great effort too. You?re not going away empty handed, though?we?ve got a great gift for you two, and here?s what it is!?

?BK Ratchtech?strap on the noise! BK Ratchtech, prepare?to?mutate!?

?This was a strong Purple Parrots team,? shouts Kirk with a very excited pair of Purple Parrots, ?let?s see if they can make it through Olmec?s temple?right after this!? The camera shows a shot of a face-down look at the Moat, then switches to a rapidly-zooming lens focusing on the ?Gargoyle? fog machine in the Jungle Crevice. The pendant of life crashes together, then fades to commercial.

The camera zooms out from a close-up on the stone ledge in front of The Treasury of the Monkeys, then pans over to Kirk with his hands on the Purple Parrots? shoulders.

?Welcome back to Legends,? he says. ?Wesley and Tara have proven themselves worthy and now have earned the right to enter Olmec?s temple. But first, Olmec?s going to give them some information to help them retrieve The Original Book of Marco Polo.?

Olmec begins his rundown:
?You could start by running up into the Room of the Tropicana Birds. Press down the correct beak, and pass into the Jungle Crevice. There, swing across, and climb into the Mouth of the Jaguar. Place the four fangs into the mouth, and you might descend into the Anaconda's Sanctuary?where you can grab the Original Book of Marco Polo. Place the snake in the correct hole, and you could pass into the Vine Drop. There, you might climb down through the wall of plants, or pull the vines to enter the Shriiiiine...of the Siiiiilver Monkeeey! Assemble the statue, and you may be headed for the Catfish Cove, where you could race down the Falls into the Secret Spring.

?You might plow through the stone wall into the Abandoned Camp?and break open the cage to find the key! Next, climb into the Tropical Forest. If you escape, you will gain entry to the Treasury of the Monkeys, and find the right bunch of bananas to release the doors. Then, crawl through the Crevice, climb through the Mining Chamber, race down the stairs on back through the temple gates! The choices are yours and yours alone. You won one and a half pendants in the temple games. Who's going first??

?I am,? replies a rather timid Tara.

?Very well, Tara!? replies Olmec. ?When Kirk gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the temple, and make your way towards the book. Hidden inside the temple are temple guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your pendant for an extra life and go on but if you're caught without a pendant, you'll be taken out of the temple...and it will be Wesley's turn to enter and try his luck. If you can reach the book, all the doors of the temple will instantly unlock and the temple guards will vanish. Return through the gates with The Original Book of Marco Polo in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded? and here's how!?

?Ooh, Cancun!? says Kirk, clearly impressed with the grand prize. ?I wonder if they?ll get there. Well, let?s get into position, mouthpieces in? And let?s put three minutes on the clock!?

The clock slams down in the corner of the screen. ?Olmec, lower your gate!? The gate lowers as Olmec moans and the lights around him switch off. ?On your marks, get set?GO!?

?There goes Tara! Up into the temple!? Tara seems to be one of the slower contestants, but she can get around the ledges of the Mining Chamber with no problem due to her smaller size. In just 10 seconds flat, the door to the Jungle Crevice opens after a hit of the actuator, and Tara crawls down into the mass of foam blocks fairly quickly. [2:46] One door?and it opens! ?She?s got a little luck here,? says Kirk, ?and you?ll need all the luck you can get in the temple!? Tara slides down into the Treasury of the Monkeys, but has to climb the ladder to reach all three bunch of bananas, which she swipes down to the ground. [2:38] Jumping down, Tara places two onto the small altar at the same time?they just manage to fit on top?and immediately all the doors in the room fall open. ?She?s got a couple of choices now,? says Kirk. ?Will she go north into the Anaconda?s Sanctuary? No, she?s going into the Tropical Forest?? Tara wades her way over to the other side, but before she can, up pops an obstructing TEMPLE GUARD!

Tara screams twice, then hands over her pendant and hits the actuator to the Abandoned Camp. [2:18] She pulls her way into the room with help of the rim above the open door, and the camera switches over to show her busting right through the wall into the Secret Spring. She begins to climb up The Falls, but a second TEMPLE GUARD grabs her ankles and captures her with 2:05 left!

?Oh no, temple guard!? says Kirk, right as Wesley begins jogging up the stairs, and then shooting headfirst down the slide to the Mining Chamber. ?He?s gotta make up some time, here!? Wesley seems to be doing fine, making it all the way to the door of the Treasury with 1:57 left on the clock. ?We?ve gotta get him to that Jaguar Room!? says Kirk, forgetting the room?s proper name. Wesley picks up the pace a little, moving thru the Tropical Forest quickly, and into the Abandoned Camp with 1:42 remaining. The key is obvious, and Wesley notices that too?he smashes the cage on its top with his fist, and immediately it collapses, allowing him to grab the key.

?Alright, he?s gonna head up into the Shrine of the Silver Monkle?Monkeys!? Kirk stumbles the name, but Wesley begins his climb upward anyway. [1:36] Entering the Shrine, he grabs the middle piece, and places it on the unused cabinet-door. He then chases after the base, and correctly places it in the pedestal with 1:28 remaining. The middle goes on, and then the head?well, he has a little trouble with aligning it properly, causing the entire statue to wobble dangerously. ?Ohhh, my?can he get the head on?? asks Kirk, right as Wesley fiddles around with the head, turning it around a little too fast and a little too much. ?Can he get it??? Wesley still can?t figure out the head after about 10 seconds of playing around with it, but it finally gets slammed down. ?YES! And he?s now just one room away!? Wesley heads into the Vine Drop with 55 seconds remaining.

Wesley tugs the vines one-by-one?stage-left, opening the downward door. Center?well, nothing happens. ?It?s gotta be the last one!? yells Kirk, obviously getting more and more excited as Wesley opens the finale door blocking access to the artifact with 47 seconds left! ?GO! GO! GO!? yells Tara from the sidelines. Wesley races up the stairs?and trips! ?Oh my, can he regain his composure?? Racing up the steps as fast as possible; Kirk has intense excitement building up. ?He?s in the room?HE?S GOT IT! HE?S GOT THE SCROLL! ALL THE DOORS ARE OPEN!? There?s a bit of delay with the other stone slab lowering, but once it does, he tears down the stairs and to the edge of the Jungle Crevice. ?He?s gotta cross The Pit of Despair?and that?s always hard!? yells Kirk, messing up yet another room name. Wesley grabs hold of the vine, then swings across to the other side, barely touching both feet on the slab, but using the other vine on the side of the door to help him up. [0:40] ?Come on, YOU CAN DO IT!? yells Tara. Wesley runs upstairs, rushes through the Room of the Tropicana Birds. ?Can he make it?? asks Kirk. ?Go meet him, Tara!? Suddenly, the camera switches to a wide shot of Olmec, Kirk, Tara, and?Wesley jumps down the stairs and into the arms of Tara to record the win with 32 seconds!

?HE MADE IT! HE MADE IT!? bellows Kirk. ?They got it all?YEAH, THEY GOT IT ALL! What a great job?? The team continues to crush each other in a hug, and Kirk grabs the large scroll out of Wesley?s hand. ?They did it, they got it all?The Videogame Chair, the iPod?they?re going to Mexico, YES! We?ve gotta go?see you next time for another great Legend of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!?

The credits scroll as various ending scenes are shown: the fired-up Purple Parrots, Kirk holding the scroll high above his head, and finally some shots of the temple and the glowing altar in the Treasury of the Monkeys. Finally, the camera fades out, and the light bulb-Nickelodeon logo is shown as an electric buzzing noise is heard.

Summary:

Not a bad episode...not bad at all! The Moat started off rather quick...and the teams completely failed at crossing rather quick as well, if you know what I mean. Once again, the fog disappeared before the Moat finished, meaning that it was at least 15-20 minutes long, perhaps even longer. However, the episode filmed directly before this one, "The Incorrect Map of Ptolemy", had a significantly longer Moat, because the fog disappeared earlier.

The Steps of Knowledge, luckily, wasn't as quirky as the last that I watched (once again, the Incorrect Map episode), luckily. The temple games were close, and featured two new games that I've never seen before: one where players slide down identical slippery footpaths to get the furthest distance and win, and the other with players playing the "soapy track and bungee cord" game but on dry elevated footpaths and players had to trade items. The games ended in a tiebreaker, where the Silver Snakes...well, they pulled a "Benjamin Franklin", and the Purple Parrots went to the temple!

Nervous-as-a-turkey-on-thanksgiving (whew! what an analogy!) Tara volunteered to go first, and made good progress. The key in the cage of the Abandoned Camp was obvious, but she unnecessarily broken open the wall and was caught after traversing the entire bottom floor of the temple. With only 1 pendant and having already entered so many rooms, I thought the team could only say their prayers and hope for a miracle. This was not to be. Wesley was also a decent player, who made very good time, but had trouble with the Silver Monkey's head. Apparently, he was TOO strong and spun it around way too fast and lost control. Nevertheless, he grabbed the artifact with about 44 seconds left on the clock, and raced out thru the upper road and recorded the win with 32 seconds to spare!

What interests me are the choices in route: the door upward to the Anaconda's Sanctuary opened, and the wall broke down in the Secret Spring. I have a feeling the guard could've been in the Secret Spring or the Catfish Cove, to be more fair to the team, but I don't know...it could've been in the Room of the Tropicana Birds. Either way, this was a great?and well deserved?Purple Parrots victory!

On a side note (or maybe it's just my fairly perverted way of thinking when watching this episode), isn't it a bit harsh to be sticking large rolled-up scrolls into jaguars' mouths? Because that WAS the actual placement of the artifact!
