Episode 35: The Modified Charts of Pedro Álvares Cabral

The camera winds and twists its way through a thick jungle of strange and exotic plants. After a few wrong turns, it finally stops in front of an ancient Mayan temple. At the base of the temple, a giant stone head sits. Suddenly, the head’s eyes light up and it begins to speak:

“Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth!” These words appear on the screen. “With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is now!”

A middle-aged man wearing a denim shirt and blue jeans swings in on a rope. He drops down and runs up the Steps of Knowledge, microphone in hand.

“Thank you! Thank you, everybody! Nice to see everyone again! It’s good to see you again, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth. The rooms are filled with lost treasures protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legends behind each of these newly discovered treasures in his temple…which one are we gonna hear about today, Olmec?”

“The legend of the Modified Charts of Pedro Álvares Cabral,” Olmec replies.

“Oh, the Modified Charts of Pedro Álvares Cabral,” Kirk repeats. “Well, the legend is set, and one of these six teams will have the chance to retrieve the modified charts—will it be:

“The Red Jaguars?” The camera zooms in on each team as they are introduced.
“The Blue Barracudas?
“The Green Monkeys?
“The Orange Iguanas?
“The Purple Parrots?
“Or the Silver Snakes?

“They’ll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests, but in the end, only one team will have the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, they have to cross the Moat, and Olmec will tell us how they’ll have to do that today…”

Olmec begins to explain the Moat Crossing:
“Before you, a large tree has fallen across the Moat. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will begin walking across the tree until they reach the other side. Once you’re safely across, your partner will cross in the same way. You may use the branches and roots of the tree as handholds; however, if you fall or if a knee touches the tree, you must go back and start again. Once both players reach the other side, run over and hit the gong.” Kirk bangs the Silver Snakes’ gong to demonstrate. “The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round!”

“All right, let’s get started,” Kirk says. “Teams, are you ready?”
All six teams scream and cheer in response.
“Olmec, are you ready?” Kirk asks.
“You’re darn tootin’,” Olmec replies.
“Okay,” says Kirk. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

All six team members rush out onto the fallen tree and begin quickly making their way across, using the limbs for handholds as necessary. “It’s wise to use those limbs and branches to your advantage,” Kirk narrates. The Orange Iguanas’ girl slips and touches the tree trunk with her knee, prompting the spotters to send her back, but everyone else makes it across on their first try. The Red Jaguars’ girl slips and falls on her face on the tree after making it about halfway across, and has to be sent back. The Blue Barracudas, Purple Parrots and Silver Snakes hit their gongs in that order in the span of about two seconds. “Three teams have made it—we need one more!” Kirk exclaims. The Orange Iguanas’ girl makes it across, but so does the Green Monkeys’ girl, and she rushes to hit her team’s gong to end the Moat Crossing.

“All right, we’ve got four teams!” Kirk says as he runs over to stand beside the Silver Snakes. “Silver Snakes had no problems getting across that tree, one-two-three, and going on to the Steps of Knowledge are the Silver Snakes…along with the Purple Parrots…” Kirk pauses between each team’s name to allow for applause. “…and the Green Monkeys…and the Blue Barracudas! The Red Jaguars and the Orange Iguanas didn’t quite make it, but we’ve got a great gift for ‘em anyway, and here’s what it is!” They receive a $50 gift certificate from GameStop.

Kirk and the remaining four teams are now standing atop the Steps of Knowledge. “As the quest continues, it’s now time for Olmec to tell us about the Modified Charts of Pedro Álvares Cabral. But pay attention, teams, because your knowledge of the legend could bring you a step closer to Olmec’s Temple…”

Olmec begins to tell the story:
“One of the greatest explorers of all time was Pedro Álvares Cabral, the discoverer of Brazil. He worked for the King of Portugal as a surveyor of the high seas, continuing the work of the great explorer Vasco da Gama, who charted the directions for many of Cabral’s voyages. In 1500, Cabral and his men were on a voyage to the Cape Verde Islands off the coast of Africa. They had just finished trading spices, and were bound back home for Lisbon. However, a sudden storm caused them to become lost at sea. Many of Cabral’s men panicked.
“‘We’ll never make it back to Portugal now!’ said one man. ‘We’re all going to die out here!’
“‘We might as well just throw ourselves to the sharks right now!’ said another.
“But legend has it that Cabral himself remained calm.
“‘Stop whining,’ he told the crew. ‘I have a plan—as long as we sail in one direction, we’re bound to reach land sooner or later!’
“Cabral took the ship’s navigation charts, modified their coordinates and direction, and turned the ship to the southwest. For weeks, the ship rocked and tossed in the waves of the Atlantic. On several occasions, the crew threatened to mutiny, but Cabral never gave up hope. Finally, after a month-and-a-half of bobbing in the ocean, a mountain peak became visible on the horizon. The next day, the ship landed on the coast of what is now Brazil, and Cabral and his men could regroup for the trip back to Lisbon. Cabral himself has been largely forgotten, but the charts he modified that led him to Brazil have made their way to the Temple. Your quest is to retrieve the Modified Charts of Pedro Álvares Cabral and bring them back here.”

“Okay—thanks, Olmec,” says Kirk. “So tell us, where are these Charts?”

“The Modified Charts of Pedro Álvares Cabral can be found in the SHRIIIINE of the Silver Monkey,” Olmec replies. The camera zooms in on the Charts on the leftmost shelf in the room before fading back to Kirk.

“Whoa—easy there, killer,” Kirk says, chuckling. “Okay, teams, you’re now standing on the Steps of Knowledge. In just a moment, Olmec’s gonna ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, I want you to stomp down on that ancient marking in front of you. If you’re right, you can move down to the next level. But if you’re wrong or you run out of time, I’ll give the other teams a chance.” Kirk begins descending the Steps. “The first two teams to make it to the bottom step will be one step closer to Olmec’s Temple. Olmec…we’re now ready for your first question.”

Olmec begins:
“Was Pedro Álvares Cabral from: Spain, Portugal, or Italy?”
The Silver Snakes ring in. “Per…Portugal.”
“That…is correct,” Olmec replies. The Silver Snakes descend to the next level.
“Silver Snakes, step down,” Kirk instructs. “Next question, Olmec.”

“Did Cabral discover: Brazil, Argentina, or Peru?”
The Purple Parrots ring in. “Brazil…?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Purple Parrots step down.
“Purple Parrots can step down as well,” Kirk narrates. “Next question.”

“What explorer did Cabral continue the work of: Marco Polo, Vasco da Gama, or…”
The Silver Snakes ring in early. “Uh…Vasco da Gama?”
“That is correct,” Olmec says. The Silver Snakes step down to the penultimate level.
“Nice—now the Silver Snakes are one step away from the Temple Games,” Kirk narrates. “But remember, we need two teams—next question.”

“According to our legend, what group of islands were Cabral and his men visiting: the Seychelles, the Cape Verde Islands, or the Hawaiian Islands?”
The Green Monkeys ring in. “The Cape…Verdi Islands?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Green Monkeys proceed to the second step.
“Green Monkeys are on the board now,” Kirk observes. “Olmec, next question.”

“What continent are the Cape Verde Islands closest to: Africa, Europe, or South America?”
A few seconds elapse before the Purple Parrots ring in. “South America?”
“Incorrect,” Olmec replies.
The Blue Barracudas ring in. “Europe…?”
“Incorrect,” Olmec booms. “The correct answer was: Africa.”
“All right—no harm, no foul,” Kirk explains. “Let’s just keep going—next question.”

“In what direction did Cabral’s crew sail to get to Brazil: northeast, southwest, or southeast?”
The Silver Snakes ring in. “South…west!”
“That…is correct!” Olmec booms. The Silver Snakes jump down to the bottom step and high-ten one another.
“All right—our first team is the Silver Snakes,” Kirk observes. “One more team to go. Who’s it gonna be? Let’s find out—next question.”

“What land feature is Brazil mainly covered by: desert, tundra, or rain forest?”
The Purple Parrots ring in. “Rain forest!”
“That is correct,” Olmec booms. The Purple Parrots proceed to the penultimate level.
“Ah, now the Purple Parrots are just one step away,” Kirk narrates. “Still time for the other two teams, though—next question.”

“Which of these large rivers flows through Brazil: the Nile, the Amazon, or the Hudson?”
The Blue Barracudas ring in this time. “Amazon…?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Blue Barracudas happily jump down to the second step.
“All right—the Blue Barracudas are on the board!” Kirk exclaims. “Like I said before, it’s anyone’s game. Olmec, continue, please.”

“Which of these large cities is an important trading port in Brazil: Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, or Bogotá?”
The Blue Barracudas ring in. “Buenos…Aires?”
“Incorrect,” Olmec replies.
The Purple Parrots ring in. “Rio de Janeiro!”
“That…is…correct!” Olmec booms. The Purple Parrots join the Silver Snakes on the bottom level.

“And we’ve got our two teams!” Kirk says as he rushes over to stand between them. “They are the Purple Parrots, and the Silver Snakes! Blue Barracudas and Green Monkeys, come down here, guys. You were great, too, and we’re not sending you home empty-handed. We’ve got a great gift for ‘em, and here it is!” They receive Super Monkey Ball for the Nintendo Wii.

Kirk is now seen standing between the two advancing teams. “These two teams will be playing for the right to enter the Temple, and they’ll do it right after this!”

The camera flies over to the Moat and zooms in on a bubbly area at the edge littered with fake lily pads as the title appears onscreen, and we fade to a commercial.

We return from the break and see Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the two remaining teams.

“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “Now, the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest. But first, let’s meet our teams…”

“On the Purple Parrots, we have Amber—she likes to play basketball, and she wants to be a pediatrician when she gets older. And her partner is Elliot—he plays basketball and baseball, and he also likes to draw. Let’s hear it for the Purple Parrots!” The audience applauds for the blue-eyed girl with wavy brown hair and the slightly taller blue-eyed boy with short, dirty-blond hair.

“And on the Silver Snakes, we have Rebecca—she plays softball, and her favorite subjects are math and science. And her partner is Christian—he plays soccer and runs track, and he also wants to be a NASA technician. How ‘bout a hand for the Silver Snakes?” The audience applauds for the short green-eyed girl with shoulder-length black hair and the tall, lanky brown-eyed boy with bushy red hair.

“All right—are you ready?” Kirk asks the teams.

“Yeah!” they loudly reply.

“Whoa—all right, go get ready for the Temple Games!” Kirk says. “Now, in the Temple Games, our teams are competing for…” Kirk retrieves a Pendant of Life from his pouch and holds it up to the camera. “…Pendants of Life. The winning team will need the Pendants they win to protect them from the relentlessly tenacious Temple Guards inside Olmec’s Temple. There are three Temple Games—Olmec, tell us about the first one, please…”

“I was just getting around to it,” Olmec replies. The black lights under him come on and he begins to explain the first Game:

“After Cabral and his crew lost their bearings in the storm, Cabral tweaked his nautical charts and turned the ship to the southwest, eventually hoping to reach land. When Kirk gives the signal, adjust your weight and begin running to turn the giant wheel you’re standing on. For every rotation you make, it symbolizes one nautical mile sailed by Cabral’s ship. The player who travels the most miles at the end of thirty seconds…wins.”

“It’s a race to the finish,” Kirk remarks. “Let’s set the clock for thirty seconds!” The clock slams down at the bottom of the screen with a loud gong sound effect. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Amber and Rebecca each have trouble staying on the giant Pendant-shaped wheel early in the game, and each one falls off after making one rotation. They each get the hang of it, though, and manage to stay pretty evenly matched up until about ten seconds are left. This is when Rebecca falls off, allowing Amber to take a slight lead. Rebecca cannot catch up before time expires.

“Okay, that’s it!” says Kirk as he appears back onscreen. “They’re spinning ‘round like a record—come down here, let’s count it up. Let’s see…the Purple Parrots made it seven miles, and…the Silver Snakes made it six miles! The Purple Parrots get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds for a second or two. “Silver Snakes, you guys can catch up in this next Game. It’s also worth a half Pendant—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2…”

Olmec begins:
“After they landed in Brazil, Cabral and his men marveled at the lush, dense rain forests that covered most of the landscape. In this game, you’ll see what it may have been like for Cabral and his men to navigate through this terrain. When Kirk gives the signal, place your staff behind your head and, without taking your hands off it, begin making your way through the rainforest. When you reach a bamboo pole, you must find a way to maneuver around it without letting go of your staff. The first player to exit the forest, or…the player who’s further along at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”

“Lost in the woods—who’s gonna make it out first?” Kirk asks. “Let’s set the clock for sixty seconds!” The clock appears in the bottom corner, set for one minute. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Both boys place their rod behind their head, and without using their hands, attempt to maneuver around the “bamboo poles” of the maze. They both make it about halfway through with few problems until Elliot hits a small snag in the form of a tricky W-shaped bamboo formation. Christian finds a way past it by ducking under one of the arches, and he continues onward. Elliot does eventually make it past the bamboo “W”, but by this time, Christian is way ahead, and makes it out of the maze first with 22 seconds to spare.

“Okay, he did it!” Kirk exclaims as he rushes back onscreen and stands beside Christian. “The Silver Snakes did it—they made it out first, so they get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds briefly. “So now, it’s all tied up at a half Pendant apiece. Now, we go to the third and final Temple Game. It’s worth a full Pendant of Life—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3…”

Olmec begins to explain the final Game:
“Once Cabral and his men had rested and re-stocked their ship in Brazil, they set sail for Portugal. In this game, the voyage you must take is considerably shorter. When Kirk gives the signal, propel your boat off the dock and sail toward your destination. Once you reach it, climb out and load the supplies in your boat. Then, turn the boat around and sail back. If you touch the water, you must go back and begin again. The first team to step back onto the dock, or…the team that’s further along at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”

“All right—whoever wins this goes to the Temple,” Kirk explains. “Let’s set the clock for sixty seconds!” The clock slams down in the bottom corner. “I’ll get out of everyone’s way—on your mark, get set, GO! Bon voyage!”

Both teams propel their boat off the dock, colliding into one another in the process. They both make it to the destination at about the same time, and remain neck-and-neck as they load their supplies up. The Silver Snakes are a little quicker about turning their boat around, and gain a slight lead. The Purple Parrots try to catch up, but the Silver Snakes make it back to the dock with about 10 seconds left, just beating out the Purple Parrots by a few inches.

“Okay, they got it!” Kirk shouts as he runs over to stand beside the winning team. The Purple Parrots appear on the other side a few seconds later. “The Silver Snakes made it back first, so the Silver Snakes win the full Pendant of Life. That gives them a Pendant and a half; the Purple Parrots only have a half—the Silver Snakes are goin’ to the Temple!” Rebecca jumps up and down in excitement and Christian high-fives her before the Purple Parrots congratulate them. “Purple Parrots being great sports—come here, you two. You two aren’t going home empty-handed, either. We’ve got a great gift for you guys, and here’s what you get!” They receive a custom-made Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth watch.

As the prize disappears off-screen, Kirk is seen standing between both members of the Silver Snakes. “We’ll see if the Silver Snakes can make it through the Temple and retrieve the Charts of Pedro Álvares Cabral, right after this!”

The camera pans in on the Temple, zooming in on the Dungeon. The face of one of the skeletons in the room fills the screen before the title covers it, and we fade to a commercial.

We return from the break and find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the winning team.

“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “The Silver Snakes have proven themselves worthy, and now they’ve earned the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, Olmec will give them some information to help them retrieve the Modified Charts of Pedro…Álvares…Cabral…”

Olmec begins to explain the layout as the camera gives us a first-person tour of the Temple:
“You could start…by running up the stairs to the Crypt! Grab the book from the skeletons, and pass into the Rope Labyrinth! Maneuver through the ropes, and climb into the Magician’s Chamber. Pull the rabbit from the correct hat, and a door may open into the Clockwork Room. Set the clocks for the correct time, and pass into the Room…of the Golden Torches! Light the correct torch, and open the door to the SHRIIIINE of the Silver Monkey! Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room…of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the correct inscription and shout it out to open the door to the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage. Slide down the tunnel to the Dungeon, where you could smash through the wall into the Dark Forest…but beware of the Temple Guards that may inhabit the trees! Find the key in the tree, and you’ll enter…the Snake Pit. Place the snakes in the hollow stump, and you’ll gain entry to the Atlantean Altar. Uncover the tile that lets in the waters of Atlantis, then…crawl through the Labyrinth, climb through the Ledges, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate! The choices are yours and yours alone!” Olmec pauses. “You won 1½ Pendants in the Temple Games. Who’s going first?”

“I am,” says Rebecca.

“Very well, Rebecca,” Olmec replies. “When Kirk gives the signal, you’ll race through the Gates into the Temple and make your way toward the Modified Charts. Hidden inside the Temple are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but…if you’re caught without a Pendant, you’ll be taken out of the Temple, and it’ll be Christian’s turn to enter and try his luck. Hidden somewhere in the Temple is the other half of your Pendant. If you can find it and you’re carrying the other half, you’ll receive an extra life. If you can reach the Modified Charts, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the Gates with the Modified Charts of Pedro Álvares Cabral in three minutes, and you’ll both be handsomely rewarded…and here’s how!”

• Just for making it this far, they’ll get a Magnavox stereo system.
• If they can grab the Modified Charts within three minutes, they’ll also receive a game table.
• And if they can bring the Modified Charts out of the Temple before three minutes expires, they’ll win a trip to Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio.

“These two wanna win that trip, I can tell,” Kirk says. “So let’s see if they can do it. Let’s get ready here—Rebecca, you get out in front. Let’s set the clock for three minutes!” The clock slams down in the bottom corner, ready to go.

“Olmec, lower your gate, if you please.” Olmec moans gutturally as the gate is lowered, and the black lights under him go out.

“It looks like they’re ready here,” Kirk observes. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

“There she goes, up the stairs!” a Kirk voice-over narrates as Rebecca dashes up the stairs and soon disappears behind Olmec. She decides to take the low road, sliding down into the Ledges, where she makes it about halfway through the room before the first TEMPLE GUARD grabs her by the arm (2:49). “Argh—Temple Guard, right off the bat!” the voice-over narrates as Rebecca screams. “She’s got a Pendant, though, so she can keep going!” Rebecca hands her Pendant over, then clambers through the room and hits the actuator for the lower crawl tube into the Rope Labyrinth, which opens. She enters the room, climbs through the small number of ropes at the bottom, and hits the actuator for the Atlantean Altar on the other side of the room; however, the door doesn’t open (2:31). Rebecca begins climbing up the ropes in the room until she reaches the actuator for the Clockwork Room. The door opens, so she heads inside (2:23). “All right—into the Clockwork Room,” the “Kirk-over” narrates. “Here’s where she’ll have to set all the clocks for—twelve o’clock, it appears!” Rebecca goes to work on the left-side clocks, setting them all for twelve. After correctly setting the right-side clocks, the door down to the Atlantean Altar opens (2:10). “All right, she’s headed down,” the Kirk voice-over observes. As Rebecca drops off the ladder into the room, the second TEMPLE GUARD appears (2:04).

“Oh, another Temple Guard! Now it’s time for Christian to take over!” the voice-over exclaims as Christian dashes up the stairs. He follows Rebecca’s path exactly, quickly reaching the Atlantean Altar, where he finds the hidden half Pendant hanging off the ladder in the room (1:47). “Oh, he found the half Pendant—that’ll definitely come in handy later!” the voice-over narrates. Christian pulls the bottom right-hand tile off the back wall, and the room immediately fills with blue light. Wasting little time, he progresses through the now-open door to the Snake Pit (1:41). “Now he’s in the Snake Pit—he’ll have to find all the snakes in the room and put ‘em in the stump!” Kirk narrates, still via voice-over. Christian finds two snakes near the door he entered the room by, and two more near the back wall. He looks around the room before finding another beside a rock formation and two more along the guardrail, and then heads to the back wall of the room, where a large, fake tree stump awaits. Christian inserts all the snakes in the seven holes of the stump before opening the door to the Dark Forest (1:01). “Okay, he got it—now he’s headed for the Dark Forest!” the Kirk voice-over remarks. Christian enters the room, bypassing the trees entirely and breaking down the wall to enter the Dungeon. However, no sooner has Christian entered the room than the third TEMPLE GUARD jumps out from hiding at the back of the room (0:53). “Oh, there’s that third Temple Guard!” the voice-over exclaims. “Good thing he found that other half Pendant!” Christian hands over his half-Pendant, and the Temple Guard slinks back into the back of the room. Christian begins to climb the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage, but he soon changes his mind and starts climbing the ladder to the door leading directly to the Shrine. He hits the actuator, and the door opens. Christian races into the room, finds his bearings, and grabs the MODIFIED CHARTS (0:30).

“There—he’s got the charts!” a now-live Kirk exclaims. “Now all the doors are open!” Christian begins making his way through the Room of the Golden Torches. The camera shows Rebecca, jumping up and down and cheering her partner on. Christian is now making his way back through the upper part of the Rope Labyrinth (0:15). “I think he’s gonna do it—thirteen seconds left, twelve!” Kirk begins to count down. Christian darts through the Crypt and back down the stairs to record the win with nine seconds remaining.

“He did it!” Kirk shouts as a fanfare of trumpets plays. Rebecca hugs Christian as Christian holds the Modified Charts in the air. “He made it out! They won it all! They won it all—all of it! Come here, Christian—this guy is fast, let me tell you! Let’s see what they’ve won—they get the stereo, they got the game table, and they’re going to Cedar Points!” Christian and Rebecca cheer in excitement. “These guys did great; they were great all day! But we’ve gotta get out of here. We’ll see you next time, though, and remember: it’s not just Legends, it’s Legends: Rebirth! Buh-bye!”

Kirk chats with the winning team as the credits roll. The camera gives us a first-person run-through of the Temple, showing rooms like the Dungeon, the Dark Forest and the Snake Pit. The winning team is shown one more time before the Stone Stanley logo appears onscreen.

It seems like every episode from the last taping day of Season 1 left something to be desired in the Temple Run. Fortunately, this episode did not—the Moat was good, the Steps of Knowledge were watchable, the Temple Games were highly competitive, and the Temple Run was a very memorable one.

Rebecca, while certainly not the fastest or smartest contestant, did pretty well given the path she had to take. She could have been a little faster climbing through the Rope Labyrinth, but she was quick to hand her Pendant over in the Ledges and to complete the Clockwork Room’s objective. She was taken out in the Atlantean Altar with just over two minutes remaining.

Christian picked up where Rebecca left off, and then some. He blazed through most of the rooms, and caught a lucky break in the Atlantean Altar. He wasted an insane amount of time in the Snake Pit, but then again, that room is pretty time-consuming to start with. He grabbed the Modified Charts with thirty seconds left, and made it out with nine seconds to go.

This episode was quite memorable, and both Kirk and the players seemed genuinely enthusiastic about their win. This is definitely a great episode, and one of the best wins of Season 1.

Notes and Trivia: This is the only time in Season 1 where an artifact hidden in the Shrine is reached.
