We return from the break and see Kirk standing in front of the Temple with one team on either side of him.
“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “Now’s the time when the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, but before that happens, I’d like to meet our two teams…
“On the Orange Iguanas, we have Tally; she says she likes going to the mall with her friends and she wants to be a model, and her partner Owen likes basketball and he wants to be a dentist—let’s hear it for the Orange Iguanas!” The audience claps for the blond-haired, green-eyed boy and the brown-eyed, black-haired girl.
“And on the Purple Parrots, we have Melissa; she says she enjoys softball and cooking—in fact, she wants to be a professional chef when she gets older. And here’s her partner, Lance; he told me he plays lacrosse and he wants to be a professional stunt man—let’s give a hand to the Purple Parrots!” The audience applauds for the green-eyed, brown-haired girl and the tall dark-haired boy.
“All right, is everybody ready?” Kirk asks the two teams.
"Yeah!" they all reply.
“Okay then, go get ready for the Temple Games, while I explain to everybody what the heck’s going on here. In the Temple Games, these two teams are going head-to-head, trying to win Pendants of Life. They’ll need Pendants to protect themselves as they enter Olmec’s Temple. There are a total of three Temple Games. Olmec, could you tell us about the first Temple Game?”
“Absolutely,” Olmec responds. The black lights under Olmec come on and he begins to explain the Temple Game:
“When Cortes first arrived in Central America, he sought the secret civilization of the Aztec empire and the treasure they possessed. In this game, you are going to locate the Aztec empire. Before you stands a platform with six holes, each one symbolizing a possible location of the Aztec empire. When Kirk gives the signal, insert your peg into one of the holes. If you’ve successfully located the Aztec empire, nothing will happen; otherwise, you will be squirted with water from Lake Tenochtitlan. The player who successfully locates the Aztec empire the most times in thirty seconds…wins.”
“We had to go down to Mexico to get this water, so make sure not to drink it,” Kirk says, prompting a chuckle from some of the audience members. “Let’s put thirty seconds on the clock.” The clock appears in the corner of the screen with a loud bang. “Players, go ahead and make your first choices.” Tally and Melissa each insert their pegs into the board. “On your marks, get set, SQUIRT!”
Tally and Melissa each get their first, second, and third choice wrong. However, Melissa scores on the fourth and fifth try, and Tally scores on the fifth and sixth try. Both girls go back and forth with right and wrong answers, and they’re both soaking-wet by the time the lights flash to end the game.
“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk says as he runs over and stands between the girls. “Both of these guys are soaked now. Let’s get the official word here…it looks like the Orange Iguanas successfully located the Aztec empire four times, and the Purple Parrots found the Aztec empire five times—that means the Purple Parrots get the half Pendant of Life!” He pauses to allow for applause. “Don’t worry, because you guys can catch up in the second Temple Game. It’s also worth a half Pendant—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2…”
Olmec begins:
“When the Spanish conquistadors began conquering the Aztecs, the Aztecs tried to salvage as much of their personal belongings as they could. You are about to salvage some priceless artifacts as well. When Kirk gives the signal, run out, grab an Aztec artifact, come back and place it in your bin. Then run back and grab the next one. Along the way, you must avoid the swinging obstacles, which symbolize the Spanish conquistadors—if you’re hit, you must go back and begin again. The first player to get all four artifacts, or…the one with the most artifacts at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”
“Time to avoid the conquistadors,” Kirk says. “Let’s put sixty seconds on the clock.” The clock appears onscreen with a bang. “On your mark, get set…GO!”
Owen and Lance both successfully retrieve the first artifact, a sculpture, on their first try. Owen successfully retrieves the second item, a clay pot, on his first try, but Lance gets hit with the swinging sandbag. Owen gets hit trying to retrieve the third item, a necklace, but Lance successfully brings the pot back and puts it in the bin. Both Lance and Owen get hit on their next try, but Owen successfully retrieves the necklace on his next run. Lance gets hit with the sandbag several more times and Owen cannot retrieve the final artifact, a jaguar-shaped statue, before the clock reaches zero.
“All right, that’s it!” Kirk says, rushing over to the starting position as the spotters bring over the baskets. “It looks pretty close—let’s count it up. Orange Iguanas got one, two, three artifacts; and the Purple Parrots…let’s see, they got one, two artifacts! The Orange Iguanas get the half Pendant of Life!” He pauses to allow for applause. “So now, it’s tied at a half a Pendant apiece. Now, we go to the final Temple Game. It’s worth a full Pendant of Life. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3…”
Olmec begins to explain the final Temple Game:
“Cuauhtémoc was captured by Cortes while crossing Lake Texcoco, and brought before Cortes and his army of hundreds of men. Fortunately for you, this army is much smaller. Before you stand several Spanish conquistadors. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will grab a cannonball, load it in their slingshot, and shoot it at one of the conquistadors. Then, the other player will shoot a cannonball. The first team to knock down all four conquistadors or…the team that knocks over the most conquistadors in sixty seconds…wins.”
“War…what is it good for? Getting to the Temple, that’s what it’s good for,” Kirk jokes. “Let’s put sixty seconds on the clock!” The clock appears in the bottom corner of the screen. “I’m gonna get out of the way here…okay, ready, aim, FIRE!!”
Both teams have decent aim, each knocking over the first two targets on their first two tries. Unfortunately, it’s all downhill from there, as the cannonballs either slip out of the slingshot or fly way off target. With about ten seconds left, each team manages to knock down a third target, but that’s as far along as anyone gets before time expires.
“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk shouts as he runs back onscreen. “We had cannonballs flying all over the place in that one, didn’t we? Teams, come on over here, let’s see how you did…it looks like the Orange Iguanas knocked over three, but the Purple Parrots also knocked over three. That means both teams win the full Pendant of Life!” The audience cheers for a few seconds. “This means that the Orange Iguanas have a Pendant and a half, but the Purple Parrots also have a Pendant and a half—we’ve got a tie! Let’s bring in the tiebreaker pedestal!”
A spotter wheels in the tiebreaker pedestal, and both teams position themselves behind it. Kirk stands beside the pedestal and explains the rules.
“Okay, teams, this is the first tie we’ve ever had, so I’ll tell you what’s gonna happen. In a few minutes, Olmec’s gonna ask you one final question. If you think you know the answer, hit the gong in front of you. You’ll have three seconds to answer the question, and we must accept your first answer. The first team to buzz in and answer correctly is going inside the Temple in search of the Golden Amulet. All clear?” Both teams nod in response. “Okay,” Kirk says. “Olmec…what is the final question?”
Olmec begins to ask the final question of the day:
“The capital city of the Aztec empire was called Tenonchtitlan. What modern-day city stands where Tenonchtitlan once stood: Mazatlan, Mexico City, or Tijuana?
Orange Iguanas hit the gong first. “Mexico City?” Owen says.
“That…is…CORRECT!” Olmec booms.
“The Orange Iguanas are goin’ to the Temple!” Kirk exclaims as Tally and Owen jump up and down in excitement. “Purple Parrots, you guys were great. It came down to the last question. We’ve got a nice gift for you both, and here it—here’s what it is.” They receive a package of Nintendo DS Lite games, including Brain Age and Crosswords.
As the prize disappears off-screen, Kirk is seen standing beside the winning team. “It was a hard-fought battle, but the Orange Iguanas have come out on top! Now we’ll see if they can make it through Olmec’s Temple and retrieve the Golden Amulet of Cue-what-a-mock, and we’ll see right after this!”
The camera pans in on the Temple and zooms in on the Golden Amulet as the title appears onscreen, and we go to a commercial.
