The Golden Cup of Belshazzar temple run
« on: April 02, 2017, 11:23:03 PM »
I recently rewatched this temple run and it had me wondering. Was this an impossible win due to technical bugs? No doors opened even after every combination was used in the Room of the Harmonic Convergence. You could hear a ding, but nothing happened. Then at the end it seemed that no doors opened in the Treasure Room. The player tried the button for the Shrine of the Silver Monkey, but it didn't open. The player also tried opening the treasure chest to enter the Swamp, but I guess that door didn't open either. Unless it did and the player didn't even bother going down there.

So was this an unwinnable layout because of technical glitches? Or was the team intended to go down from the Treasure Room into the Swamp? I think if there was a glitch, it would've happened in the Room of the Harmonic Convergence. A sound could be hear indicating the objective was completed, but no doors opened. Plus, it seemed really harsh to have them go back into the Cave of Sighs and up from there. Personally, I think this was a bugged run due to this. I don't know if the door to the Swamp opened from the Treasure Room, but if it didn't, then that would really make this an impossible layout.

Thoughts?

I would like to bring up 2 Temple Runs to use as examples.

1) Wild Bill Hickok and the Dead Man's Hand.
They had the same issue with the door leading from the Throne Room and The Swamp. After sitting and stepping on the Throne, the door never opened until the final seconds of the run.

2) War Fan of the 47 Ronin.
The door from the Pit to the Tomb of the Headless Kings got locked closed again by Jeremy by accident. Why it locked shut when it was already opened, I don't know.

With at least War Fan, they were given the 2nd prize as well cause they would have at least grabbed the Fan in time. If anything, with the Dead Man's Hand, they probably did the same thing unless the door was opened the entire time.

With Golden Cup, it's most likely that the producers gave them the 2nd prize as well and, I'm taking a guess here, invited them back to rerun the Temple (and most likely they still lost since this one aired), or had them come back to replay the entire game (which that one I doubt)

I definitely believe the "Golden Cup" kids faced a production error in the Room of Harmonic Convergence. Season 1 had a handful of temple runs with dead ends, but no other run featured a two-room dead end like this run. There were runs like "Oracle Bowl" and "Joan of Arc" that featured the Troubled Bridge as a dead end, but not like the one the "Golden Cup" kids had to face. IIRC, Katherine tried every single possible combination in the room too. For some reason, you can hear a sound effect but no doors open. She's later forced to retreat all the way to the Treasure Room where she's removed from the temple. Before Katherine's removed though, she does open the Treasure Room chest AND you can hear it opening too. Similar to the tune that it makes when Mitchell opens it in "Geronimo". But when Sean enters the Treasure Room, it seems like they encountered another dead end. I'm not sure if the Treasure Room was a dead end though. Sean didn't have enough time to look, AND he never really examined the Treasure chest. Here's the two most likely routes the team was suppose to take:

1.) Complete the Room of Harmonic Convergence, and stay low for the rest of the way.

2.) Enter the top floor, and climb down through the Treasure Chest to continue on the bottom floor.

It's possible that both routes were suppose to be options, and that the team would've been forced to take the bottom floor to the artifact. It's no surprise that this temple run was riddled with production errors either. If you can recall, most of the "Golden Cup" episode was taped in S1L1 except for the temple run. Which was postponed most likely due to time constraints since this was most likely the first episode ever. The producers eventually had to shoot the temple run, so they tacked it on to S1L5. But since there were 5 other episodes that day, they probably rushed the temple run, which was probably why it was full of production errors. I definitely feel that this layout was impossible, and not even Jennifer and Damian would win in it. Too bad though. Katherine and Sean easily deserved a second chance in the temple. I would give it to them in a heartbeat!

I would've given them a second chance too. Plus, I actually think they were good players. They seemed to know what they were doing and they had decent speed. If not for potential production errors, I definitely think they would've at least gotten the Cup.

Yeah, both Katherine and Sean moved fast in the temple. I like how both players never gave up despite their layout being riddled with dead ends. I've seen people give this team a hard time in the temple for their performance, but their main downfall was the layout. There was no clear direction for them to go. Compared to Blackbeard, Katherine and Sean made much better time. Katherine had a more time consuming dead end than Sabrina, and she still covered more rooms than her. I like how they always tried to move forward. Good team, terrible layout. They would be the number one team to get a second chance after Discarded Seal. ;)

I would've given John and Tia a second chance in the Season 3 temple. They probably wouldn't have even made it up the temple steps.  :afro:
