Episode 3: Polyphemus's Blinded Eye

(Camera moves through a thick jungle taking two wrong turns and finally revealing King Olmec)

Olmec: Legends of the Hidden Temple!

(Title card forms)

Olmec: With your guide, Kirk Fogg!

(Title card shatters)

Olmec: And here he is now! With…my good son, Zuma!

(Kirk and Zuma swing on ropes into the new Legends set)

Kirk: Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Thank you Olmec!

Zuma: Thank you very much father!

Kirk: Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple. The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan temple guards. Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple. Which one are we gonna hear about today?

Olmec: The legend of Polyphemus's blinded eye.

Kirk: Oh, the Polyphemus's blinded eye. Well, the legend is set and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the blinded eye.

Zuma: Will it be:

(Camera shows each team cheering)

The Red Jaguars?

The Blue Barracudas?

The Green Monkeys?

The Orange Iguanas?

The Purple Parrots?

Or the Silver Snakes?

Kirk: They'll have to pass some pretty tough physical and mental tests, and in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's temple. But first, the must cross the moat, and Olmec will tell them how they'll have to do it today.

Olmec: Before each of you is a wooden raft with an oar. When Zuma gives the signal, stand on the raft and paddle yourself to the other side. Then it will be your partner's turn to do the same. If you fall off, go back and start again. When both players have crossed the moat, run over and hit the gong. (Kirk and Zuma hit the Red Jaguars and Silver Snakes' gongs) The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round.

Zuma: Are you ready teams?

Teams: YEAH!

Kirk: Are you ready Olmec?

Olmec: Rock on!

Zuma: On your mark, get set, GO!

Kirk: We've got our four teams right here! They are: The Red Jaguars, the Blue Barracudas, the Green Monkeys, and the Silver Snakes!

Zuma: The Orange Iguanas and Purple Parrots will not go home empty-handed and we happen to have something for them.

[Legends Explorer Alec]

Kirk: As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about Polyphemus’s blinded eye. Pay attention teams, because your knowledge of the legend will bring you one step closer to Olmec's temple.

Olmec: The most well-known Cyclops in Ancient Greece was Polyphemus. He was the son of Poseidon, god of the sea, and Thoosa, a sea nymph. He lived on the island of the Cyclopes, and one day, after coming back from herding his flock of sheep, he found uninvited guests in his cave. These men were none other than Odysseus and his crew.

Polyphemus: Hey, what are you little guys doin' in my hangout? Well, since yer all here, why not stick around fer dinner?!

Olmec: Polyphemus blocked the entrance to the cave with a round slab, then devoured one of Odysseus' men right on the spot! The next morning, while the great Cyclops was away, the crew was in a state of panic.

Odysseus: Stand your sanity, my warriors. I believe I can get us out of this predicament with this unwatered wine. It was given to me by my friend Maron, and I shall give this to the beast when he returns.

Olmec: That night, he gave the wine to the beast as he was gnawing on another crew member, causing him to get terribly drunk. When assured he was asleep, Odysseus and his men then took a huge olive club with a sharpened tip, and rammed it into the Cyclops' eye!

Polyphemus: OOOWOOOOWW!! MY EYE!! WHERE'D EVERYBODY GO?!

Olmec: Odysseus sailed away with the remainder of his crew, escaping the island for good. Years later, the eye of the poor plucked giant found its way to the Temple. Your quest is to find the eye, and bring it back here.

Zuma: Thank you father, now tell us, where is the blinded eye?

Olmec: Polyphemus's blinded eye can be found in the Pirate’s Cove.

Kirk: Teams, you're now standing on the Steps of Knowledge. In a minute, Olmec will ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you. If you're right, you'll move down to the next level. But if you're wrong or ran out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance to answer. The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's temple. Olmec, we're now ready for your first question.

Olmec: Polyphemus was the son of…Zeus and Hera, Poseidon and Thoosa—

(Female Silver Snake rings in)

Zuma: Silver Snakes

Female Silver Snake: Poseidon and Thoosa.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Nice job!

(Silver Snakes move down)

Kirk: Next question, Olmec.

Olmec: Poseidon is the god of…War, Sea, or Air?

(Female Red Jaguar rings in)

Zuma: Red Jaguars

Female Red Jaguar: The sea.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Now you're on the board!

(Red Jaguars move down)

Kirk: Next question, Olmec.

Olmec: Thoosa is a sea…Nymph—

(Female Blue Barracuda rings in)

Zuma: Blue Barracudas

Female Blue Barracuda: Nymph?

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Nice job!

(Blue Barracudas move down)

Kirk: Next question, Olmec.

Olmec: Polyphemus lived on the island of…Lost Dreams, Cyclops—

(Male Blue Barracuda rings in)

Zuma: Blue Barracudas

Male Blue Barracuda: Cyclops.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Right again! Step down!

(Blue Barracudas move down)

Kirk: Now you guys are one step away. Next question.

Olmec: The Cyclops has a flock of…Goats—

(Female Silver Snake rings in)

Zuma: Silver Snakes

Female Silver Snake: Sheep.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Step down!

(Silver Snakes move down)

Kirk: Now you’re just one step away. Next question.

Olmec: The person who came into Polyphemus' cave unannounced was…Odysseus—

(Female Red Jaguar rings in)

Zuma: Red Jaguars

Female Red Jaguar: Odysseus.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Step down!

(Red Jaguars move down)

Kirk: It’s now a three-way tie. Next question.

Olmec: In terms of his brothers, Polyphemus was the…Oldest, Youngest, or Middle child?

(Male Green Monkey rings in)

Zuma: Green Monkeys

Female Green Monkey: Oldest?

Olmec: Incorrect.

(Male Red Jaguar rings in)

Zuma: Red Jaguars

Male Red Jaguar: The youngest?

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: We’ve got our first team! It's the Red Jaguars!

(Red Jaguars move down and high ten)

Kirk: Remember, we need two teams. Next question.

Olmec: The shape of the slab the Cyclops used to block the entrance was—

(Male Silver Snake rings in)

Zuma: Silver Snakes

Male Silver Snake: Round.

Olmec: That is correct!

(Silver Snakes move down and high ten each other and the Red Jaguars)

Kirk: We've got our two teams that are going head to head in the Temple Games! They are: The Red Jaguars! And the Silver Snakes!

Zuma: Blue Barracudas, Green Monkeys, none of you will go home empty-handed either. Here are your gifts for playing.

Kirk: These two teams will play for the right to enter Olmec’s Temple!

Zuma: They will do it right after these messages!

Kirk: Welcome back to Legends. Now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest. But before we get started, Zuma and I will have a talk with the team players. On the Red Jaguars we have:

Angus: Angus Lowe.

Kirk: How old are you Angus?

Angus: 12.

Kirk: It says here that you’d like to work with animals. Tell me about that.

Angus: Well I love animals and I really wish I could work with them.

Kirk: Are you thinking about working in a zoo?

Angus: Yes.

Kirk: Nice. Now who are you?

Jacqueline: Jacqueline and I’m 12 years old.

Kirk: It says here that you play the violin. Can you tell me about that?

Jacqueline: Well I’ve been playing for years now and I’d like to play in a concert some day.

Kirk: Do you take lessons?

Jacqueline: Yeah, my mom’s my instructor.

Kirk: Wow. Let’s hear it for the Red Jaguars!

Zuma: And here on the Silver Snakes, we have:

Stan: Stan.

Zuma: How old are you Stanley?

Stan: 12.

Zuma: It says here that you want to be in a band. Can you tell me about that?

Stan: Well my older brother’s a drummer and I’d like to play the bass.

Zuma: Well you should take lessons. Now who are you?

Fiona: Fiona.

Zuma: How old are you Fiona?

Fiona: 11.

Zuma: It says here that you also play the violin.

Fiona: Yeah, I played in a school orchestra. I’ll be entering middle school soon and I’ll keep playing.

Zuma: How long have you been playing?

Fiona: Since kindergarten.

Zuma: Nice. Let us hear it for the Silver Snakes!

Kirk: Why don't you girls get set up for the next temple game and guys get set up for the first one here. In the temple games, teams are competing to win Pendants of Life. The winning team will need those pendants to protect them from the dreaded temple guards as they make their way through the temple. There are three temple games, and Olmec will tell us about the first one.

Olmec: Odysseus and his crew were trapped within Polyphemus' lair. Before you is wall with steps sticking out. When Zuma gives the signal, climb up the wall's steps, take a crew member from the top, then come back down and start again. The player with all three crew members saved, OR the player furthest along in 60 seconds wins!

Kirk: Alright, players get in position, let's put 60 seconds on the clock!

Zuma: On your mark, get set, GO!

Angus - 3 (0:20 Remaining)
Stan - 2

Kirk: He's got three! That's it!

Zuma: Angus has three men while Stanley has two.

Kirk: That means the Red Jaguars get a half a Pendant of Life! The Silver Snakes don't have a pendant, but they can catch up in the next game. Olmec, tell us about it.

Olmec: Polyphemus kept sheep around for him to snack on. You are strapped to bungee cords on a mat with sheep next to you. When Kirk gives the signal, take a sheep and put it in the pen in the corner, then come back and do it again. The first player to get two sheep in both corners, OR the player furthest along in 60 seconds wins!

Kirk: We're gonna be feeding the Cyclops! Players get in position, let's put 60 seconds on the clock!

Zuma: On your mark, get set, GO!

Jacqueline - 4 (0:23 Remaining)
Fiona - 3

Kirk: She's got four! That's it!

Zuma: Jacqueline here has four sheep while Fiona has two.

Kirk: That means the Red Jaguars get another half Pendant of Life! So it's 1-0 so far, but the Silver Snakes can tie in the next game. It’s worth a full pendant. Olmec, tell us about it.

Olmec: In his blind rage, Polyphemus tried to recapture the escapees returning to their ship, but you'll help them escape. You're both at the top of a slide. When Kirk gives the signal, slide down and throw your crew member in the center hole. Your partner will do the same as you make your way back up. The team that frees eight crew members, OR the team with the most at the end of 60 seconds wins!

Kirk: Alright, teams get in position, let's put 60 seconds on the clock!

Zuma: On your mark, get set, GO!

Red Jaguars - 8 (0:11 Remaining)
Silver Snakes - 6

Kirk: That's it!

Zuma: The Red Jaguars got all eight of theirs while the Silver Snakes have six.

Kirk: That means that the Red Jaguars get a pendant, giving them two, the Silver Snakes don’t have any, so the Red Jaguars are going to the temple!

Zuma: Silver Snakes, nice try. Did you have fun?

Stan and Fiona: Yes.

Zuma: Of course, neither of you will go home empty-handed. Here are your gifts for playing.

Kirk: We’ll see if the Red Jaguars will make it through Olmec’s Temple and retrieve the blinded eye!

Zuma: They will do it right after these messages!

Kirk: Welcome back to Legends! Angus and Jacqueline have proven themselves worthy and have earned the right to enter Olmec’s temple.

Zuma: But first, my father will give them some information to help them retrieve Polyphemus’s blinded eye.

Olmec: You could start by running up the stairs to the Room of the Three Gargoyles. Push in the correct tongue, and pass into the Pit of Despair. Here, you must choose your next path. You could race up to the Observatory, spin the sundial, and climb down into the Heart Room. Open up one of the doors and you could enter the Treasure Room. You might open the treasure chest and climb down through it, or open the door to the SHRIIIIIIINE of the Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Pirate’s Cove. Spin the ship’s wheel and you can descend into the Dungeon. You can plow through the Stone Wall into the Dark Forest. But beware of the Temple Guards that may inhabit the trees. Find the key in the tree, and you’ll enter the Swamp. If you escape, you could gain entry to the Throne Room. Sit on the Throne of the Pretender, then race through the pit, come out the Cave of Sighs and back through the temple gate. The choices are yours and yours alone. You won two pendants in the temple games. Who's going first?

Jacqueline: I am!

Olmec: Very well, Jacqueline. When Zuma gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the temple and make your way towards the blinded eye. Hidden inside the temple are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your pendant for an extra life and go on. BUT if you're caught without a pendant, you will be taken out of the temple, and it'll be Angus's turn to enter and try his luck. If you can reach the blinded eye, all of the doors of the temple will instantly unlock and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the gates with the blinded eye in three minutes and you will both be handsomely rewarded and here's how:

Zuma: Father, will you lower gate, please?

(Olmec moans gutturally while the gate lowers)

Kirk: Get in position. Mouthpieces in. Put three minutes on the clock!

(Timer bangs down)

Zuma: On your mark, get set, GO!

(Temple run music cues and HUD moves in on screen)

Jacqueline heads up into the Room of the Three Gargoyles and immediately encounters a Temple Guard (2:57)! She gives up her pendant and tries all three gargoyles: the middle to no avail, the camera-left to the Cave of Sighs, and the camera-right to the Pit of Despair (2:48). She runs down the stairs, jumps into the pit, and heads for the Observatory. She opens the door (2:38), climbs up, spins the sundial, and out comes the second Temple Guard (2:30)! Angus quickly follows Jacqueline’s footsteps to the Observatory, sees the open door to the Heart Room, climbs down, and opens the Treasure Room (2:22). He runs across the room, and hits the actuator to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey (2:11). He enters the room and assembles the silver monkey in 15 seconds. Noticing that the Pirate’s Cove was locked from the shrine, he decides to climb down into the Dungeon where he runs into the third Temple Guard (1:45)! He gives up his pendant and climbs up into the Pirate’s Cove. He looks all around the room and sees the eye on the middle torch holder. He grabs it (1:35) and makes his way across the top floor, jumps into the Pit of Despair, makes his way through the Cave of Sighs, and out (1:00)! He tosses the eye to Zuma and hugs Jacqueline with so much excitement.
