Author's Note: This is one of the episodes of my independent project, Legends: The Rediscovery.  More information on the project can be found by following this link. (

Episode 20: The Jeweled Sword of Charlemagne

The camera maneuvers through a thick, lush rainforest to stop in front of an ancient temple. A giant stone head next to the gate of the temple begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE! With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is NOW!"

On this final word, Kirk descends into view on a rope. "Thank you, thank you very much! Nice to see you! Nice to see you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple. The rooms are filled with mysterious lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple. Olmec, what legend are we gonna hear about today?"

Olmec replies:
"The legend of the Jeweled Sword of Charlemagne."

"Ooh, the Jeweled Sword of Charlemagne!" Kirk says in response. "Well the adventure is set, and one of these six teams will have the chance to retrieve the Jeweled Sword. Will it be:
"Darrel and Heather of the Red Jaguars—" the camera pans to each team in order—
"Jaden and Christina of the Blue Barracudas,
"Pat and Jaime of the Green Monkeys,
"Tim and Katelyn of the Orange Iguanas,
"Michael and Abbie of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Scott and Samantha of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple. First, they must cross the moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today:
"In front of each team an aged vine bridge has fallen across the Moat. When I say 'go,' one player on each team will walk onto the lower vine in the middle and hold onto the side vines with their hands. Remember, there's a break in the middle vine, and if your feet touch the water when you try to jump over the gap, you'll have to go back and try again. When the first player steps onto the deck, it's their partner's turn to get on the bridge."
"When both players are on the deck at the other end of the Moat, run over and hit the gong." He slams down on the Red Jaguars' gong to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round, so let's get started. Hey teams— are you ready?"
"YEAH!" The players all cheer and shout in response.
"But Olmec, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"Allow me," Olmec says, and the camera zooms out to a wide shot showing him as well as part of the Moat. "On your marks, get set… GOOOOO."

The teams are even all the way through. After the Red Jaguars get their first player across, the Orange Iguanas are the last to get a player across only five seconds later. The Red Jaguars are also the first player to ring the gong, and the Blue Barracudas and Silver Snakes tie for second. Only a second later, the fourth team to get both players on the other side of the Moat is the Green Monkeys.
"That's it!" Kirk says a second after the Purple Parrots hit their gong, which does not light up. "That's it! We've got our four teams! Red Jaguars over in a flash! They're goin' onto the Steps of Knowledge, along with the Blue Barracudas—" the camera briefly shows each qualifying team— "and the Green Monkeys— and the Silver Snakes! Orange Iguanas and Purple Parrots gave it a great effort too. They're not goin' away empty-handed, we've got a nice gift for them for playing and here's what it is." Tim, Katelyn, Michael and Abbie will each be receiving a copy of Zathura on DVD.

The four teams are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge accompanied by Kirk. "As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about the Jeweled Sword of Charlemagne.  But pay attention teams, because what you know about the legend can bring you one step closer to Olmec's Temple."

Olmec begins to tell the story:
"The most fearless, most powerful, most excellent king of the Franks was Charlemagne.  He revived the arts in the West, and conquered much of Germany and Spain to add to his empire in France.  But although his armies captured many lands without hardly trying, defending such a huge kingdom wasn't always so easy.
"One day a group of Vikings led by the warrior Godfred marched into the Holy Roman Empire, which was under Charlemagne's control.  Charlemagne sent out his armies, and two weeks later, one of his soldiers returned with good news and bad news.
" 'Bad news is we're losing men quicker than meat attracts flies,' the soldier reported.
" 'And the good news…?'
" 'Good news is they got these ridiculous lookin' horned helmets now, at least they're dyin' laughing.'
"Charlemagne was outraged. 'We can't lose to those savages!' he shouted. 'I'll take care of this problem myself.'
"So he grabbed his jeweled sword and went out to battle.  Charlemagne did away with most of the remaining soldiers, and just before he delivered the final blow to the leader Godfred, the Vikings surrendered.  Charlemagne stabbed Godfred in the heart anyway, and the end of the sword's blade remained stuck in his chest.  The now-broken sword made its way to the Temple.  Your goal is to retrieve the Jeweled Sword of Charlemagne and bring it back here."

"Thank you Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes the story. "So tell us, where is this Jeweled Sword?"
Olmec replies:
"The Jeweled Sword of Charlemagne can be found in the Room of the Ancient Warriors."

"Teams," Kirk begins, walking down the steps, "you are now standing on the Steps of Knowledge, and in a minute, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, I want you to stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're first, your step will light up, and you'll have three seconds to answer.  If you're right, you're gonna move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance to answer.  The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  All right Olmec, we're now ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
"Was Charlemagne king of: The Franks, The Anglo-Saxons—?"
Samantha rings in: "The Franks!"
"Correct," Olmec replies.
"Step on down!" Kirk says. "Silver Snakes are only two right answers away from the Temple Games.  Next question Olmec."

Olmec asks:
"Did Charlemagne revive: The arts in the West…?"
Darrel buzzes in early: "Um, arts in the West…?"
"Correct," Olmec answers, and the Red Jaguars can go down one step.

Olmec then asks:
"Who invaded Charlemagne's empire: The Siberians, The Lombards, or—?"
Darrel gongs in again: "Vikings…?"
"That is correct," replies Olmec, and so the Red Jaguars step down again.
"They realize they're just one step away from the Temple Games," Kirk comments, "but we're lookin' for two teams.  Next question Olmec."

Olmec now asks:
"Did the Vikings come from: Bavaria, Scandinav—?"
Jaime stomps down first: "Um… Scandinavia."
"Correct," Olmec answers, allowing the Green Monkeys to move down a step.
"Blue Barracudas can still catch up," Kirk narrates. "Olmec, continue."

Olmec asks:
"Charlemagne controlled much of the Holy Roman Empire—"
Pat rings in before Olmec can finish the question. "Umm… Holy Roman Empire…?" he guesses.
"That is not one of the three choices," Olmec answers. "Is the Holy Roman Empire today known as: Germany, France, or Austria?"
Jaden stomps down and guesses: "Germany…?"
"Correct," replies Olmec, and the Blue Barracudas are on the board.
"It's pretty much anybody's game now," says Kirk. "We're still lookin' for two teams.  Next question."

Olmec now asks:
"Were the Vikings who invaded Charlemagne's empire led by: Wilfred, Godfred—?"
Christina is first to stomp down: "Godfred…?"
"That is correct," Olmec answers, and the Blue Barracudas go down to the second-to-last step.
"Whoo! They're comin' from behind and now the Blue Barracudas are now one step away from the Temple Games," Kirk comments. "Next question."

Olmec now asks:
"Did Charlemagne rush out into battle wielding—?"
Heather buzzes in: "His jeweled sword…?"
"That is correct!" Olmec shouts, allowing the Red Jaguars to go down to the bottom step.
"Red Jaguars are goin' on to the Temple Games," Kirk narrates, "but who's gonna join them: the Silver Snakes, the Green Monkeys or the Blue Barracudas? Olmec, next question."

Olmec asks:
"Does Charlemagne's name mean: Charles the Great, King Charles, or—?"
Jaden rings in: "Uh… Charles the Great."
"That is correct!" Olmec yells, and the Blue Barracudas can join the Red Jaguars on the last step.
"That's it! We've got our two fired-up teams right here!" Kirk announces. "The Blue Barracudas and the Red Jaguars! Green Monkeys, Silver Snakes, come on down here!" The other teams move down a step. "You guys gave it a great effort too.  We've got a nice gift for you both and here's what it is." Pat, Jaime, Scott and Samantha will each be receiving a $50 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Nestle.

"Now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest," says Kirk, "but before we get started, I wanna talk to our team players. On the Blue Barracudas, we have Christina. How old are you?"
"Twelve," she replies.
"And it says here you wanna be a singer but you're also into mountain-biking. How did you get into that?"
"Um, wanted my older brother to take me with him one weekend," explains Christina, "he's gone biking all over the place. An' whaddya know, turns out I like it."
"And your partner Jaden, how old are you?" Kirk asks.
"Thirteen," replies Jaden.
"And you play football and you wanna be a marine biologist?" Kirk reads. "Why that?"
"Well I don't think it says it there but I like swimming a lot too," Jaden explains. "And uh, I guess that's it, I guess I got all into fish there too."
"No wonder you're a Blue Barracuda," Kirk says. "Let's hear it for them!" The audience applauds for a moment, then Kirk goes to interview the tall black girl on the other team. "And on the Red Jaguars, we have Heather. How old are you?"
"Eleven," she answers.
"And you like to listen to music and you also play soccer," Kirk reads on his index card. "Tell me about that."
"Well, um, I play every day after school with my big brother Sean and he's real good," Heather explains. "And now I'm in a team back at home and… yeah r'it's hard, but I play as a goalkeeper."
"And Darrel, you play baseball and you wanna be an actor," Kirk reads. "What kind of movie you wanna star in?"
"Prob'ly an action movie," Darrel replies.
"And something tells me this is gonna be one action-packed Temple Games," Kirk says. "Give it up for the Red Jaguars!" The audience applauds again.

"Why don't you go get ready for the Temple Games," Kirk says, "while I tell you guys what's gonna happen here. In the Temple Games, teams are be competing to win Pendants of Life. The winning team will need those Pendants to protect themselves from those DREADED Temple Guards as they make their way though Olmec's Temple. There are three Temple Games, and Olmec… tell us about Temple Game #1."

Olmec begins:
"Charlemagne greatly expanded the Frankish Empire during his reign, and new maps would have to be made of the captured areas. In this game, you will make a map for him. When Kirk gives the signal, crawl to the first cube, grab the first segment of the map, then crawl back with it and place it on your board. Then crawl out to retrieve the next section of the map. During your voyages, you must avoid the swinging obstacles.
"The first player to retrieve all four pieces of the map— or the one that's grabbed the most sections of their map in 60 seconds— wins."
The camera fades to Kirk. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock," he says. "On your mark, get set, GO!"
Heather and Christina crawl out, but both are hit by the swinging sandbags almost immediately. They each grab the first sections of their respective maps on the second try, and from there on in, either both players are struck by the obstacles or one grabs a piece of the map whereas the other one is hit. They both have a total of eight tries before the ceiling lights flash, ending the Temple Game.
"All right!" Kirk shouts, running over to count the score. "Great job by both teams here. Blue Barracudas got two piece of the map, but the Red Jaguars got three! Red Jaguars win a half Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds for a moment. "The next game's also worth a half Pendant, Blue Barracudas can catch right back up. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2."

Olmec continues:
"Charlemagne sent his men to take down the Viking invasion, but in this game, you must stop the Vikings. When Kirk gives the signal, lob a cannonball at one of the soldiers on the wall. Then place another cannonball into your slingshot and do it again.
"The first player to knock down all four soldiers— or the one who's knocked over the most soldiers after 60 seconds— wins."
"We're basically bombs away here," Kirk says, running over to the sidelines. "Let's set the clock for 60 seconds. On your mark, get set, GO!"
Darrel and Jaden lock and load, and Jaden knocks a target over on his second try. Darrel doesn't score until his fourth try, but after that, they both do pretty well. On his ninth shot, Jaden knocks over the last of his four targets, ending the game with 18 seconds left.
"Well," says Kirk, running over to join both players and declare the winner, "the Blue Barracudas knocked down all four targets before time was up, so they get the half Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds for a moment. "This next game's the third and final game, it's worth a full Pendant. Olmec, tell us about it."

Olmec narrates:
"Within Charlemagne's empire, news tended to travel very slowly. However, you must try to pick up the pace. When Kirk gives the signal, grab a secret message and run out to meet your partner at the middle of the path. Then pass the message to your partner, who will slide back and place it in your bin. Then go back and do it again.
"The team with the most messages in their bin after 60 seconds wins."
"It's all tied up. Half Pendant apiece," Kirk reminds the audience. "Let's find out the outcome. Let's set the clock for 60 seconds. On your mark, get set, GO!"
The players grab onto the raised sides of the tracks and walk against the force of the bungee cords attaching them to the walls behind them. The cords are only just long enough so that the players can meet in the middle, and the players had a lot of trouble walking against the force of the cords. The teams did score a few times before the ceiling lights flash, however.
"All righty then," Kirk says as he walks down along the space between the tracks and grabs the teams' bins. The kids run over to join him as soon as they can. "Red Jaguars got one, two… three messages, Blue Barracudas got one, two… three messages! It's a tie, they each get the full Pendant, that gives them a Pendant and a half each, we go to a tiebreaker. Bring out the tiebreaker gongs!"

The players run over to the tiebreaker pedestals and stand behind their gongs as directed by Kirk. "Okay, here's the tiebreaker rules. In a minute, Olmec is gonna ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, hit the gong in front of you. You'll have three seconds to answer and I must accept your first response. If you're right, you and your partner will be going to the Temple in search of the Jeweled Sword of Charlemagne, but if you're wrong or run out of time, your opponents automatically win. Olmec! What's the final question?"

Olmec asks:
"After Godfred and the Vikings surrendered, did Charlemagne—?"
The Red Jaguars ring in early and struggle to answer the question: "Well… they… he stabbed the guy in the heart… Godfred, Charlemagne stabbed Godfred in the heart… and the end of the sword's still in 'im… and the rest's in the Temple now……"
Olmec pauses for a second. "That… is… ABSOLUTELY correct!" He replies, and the audience bursts into applause.
"That's it!" Kirk announces. "Red Jaguars are goin' to the Temple!" The audience cheers for Darrel and Heather, who high-five each other five times in a row. "Blue Barracudas gave it a great effort too. Here's what we've got for them." Jaden and Christina will each be receiving a gift package from British Knights.

"Olmec!" calls Kirk. "Darrel and Heather have proven themselves worthy and now've earned the right to enter your Temple. But before they go, can you give them any hints to help them retrieve the Jeweled Sword of Charlemagne?"
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
"You could start by climbing through the Ledges and climbing down into the Great Chasm. Crawl through the chasm, then race into the Throne Room. Sit on the Throne of the Pretender and you could choose to go up into the Burial Pit, or into the Junction of the Secret Shafts. If you escape, you might have a chance to enter the Switch Inferno. Find the correct actuator to go upstairs, or plow through the wall and into the Quicksand Bog.
"Next, climb the Pharaoh's Secret Passage up into the Room of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the right password and shout it out to open the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room of the Ancient Warriors, where you can grab the Jeweled Sword of Charlemagne. Place yourself in the correct armor, but be careful— one of the suits of armor could be possessed by the spirit of a Temple Guard! If they grab you, you'll have to give up a Pendant of Life! Next, race up to the King's Storeroom, smash the clay pots to find the key, then swing on the rope across the Great Chasm. Then, pass through the Vault, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone." Olmec pauses for a second here. "You won 1 ½ Pendants in the Temple Games. Who's going first?"
"I am," replies Darrel.
"Very well, Darrel," replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "Good luck to both of you."

"All right then," Kirk says, beginning to explain the rules. "When I say 'go,' you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way towards the Sword. Be careful, inside the Temple there are many locked doors and dead ends. But to make up for this, there are three old shafts somewhere in the Temple. If you can find one and it's open, you can jump in and slide down to the Junction of the Secret Shafts. Also beware, because in the Temple there are also Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. If you enter one of those rooms, a Temple Guard will jump out and grab you. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple— and it'll be Heather's turn to enter and try her luck. Now, you have a Pendant and a half, but hidden somewhere inside the Temple is the other half of your Pendant. If you can find it and you're carrying the other half, you'll get an extra life. If you can reach the Sword, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the gates with the Jeweled Sword of Charlemagne in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded— and here's how!"
• For just making it into the Temple, Darrel and Heather are each going to get an XBOX 360 game package, complete with two new games.
• If they can reach the Sword before three minutes is up, they'll also win $1,000 Toys 'R' Us gift cards.
• If they can bring the Jeweled Sword of Charlemagne out of the Temple before three minutes is up, they'll each win four tickets for a seven-day Caribbean cruise!

"Can the Red Jaguars get to the Sword?" Kirk says. "Can they get out in three minutes? I know we're gonna find out here. Put your mouthpieces in. Darrel's going first, so you can stand over there. Heather stand over here. Let's put the gate down, Olmec!"
Olmec moans as he lowers the gate.
"And let's put three minutes on the clock. On your mark, get set, GO!"

"There he goes! Up into the Temple!" Kirk says as Darrel races into the Vault and gives the safe wheel a nice spin. "They've got a Pendant and a half, how far can that take them?" The door from the Vault to the Great Chasm slams open, and Darrel jumps down into the gap and tries the door into the Throne Room with 2:35 left. "They said they wanted to go up from the Throne of the Pretender, all the way up and to the Ancient Warriors," Kirk comments as the Throne of the Pretender begins to turn around with Darrel on it. Darrel then climbs up to try the door into the sarcophagus in the Burial Pit, but it's sealed shut. "That door's not gonna open!" Kirk shouts. "What now?"
"Go Darrel!" Heather yells from the sidelines as Darrel jumps off the Throne and enters the Junction of the Secret Shafts. "You can do it!" Darrel races right across the room and hits the actuator to enter the Switch Inferno with 2:10 left. He hits all twenty-four actuators on the walls, but when he finds out the doors leading up to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey still won't open, he runs through the rock wall into the Quicksand Bog and meets the first TEMPLE GUARD!
Darrel hands over his Pendant of Life to the Temple Guard, then climbs up the ladder to enter the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. No dice. So then he trudges across the room, gets on the short ladder there to climb onto the Pharaoh's Secret Passage, and tries to work his way up the slide. He slips and falls before he can make it all the way up, but then tries again and enters the Room of the Secret Passage with 1:22 remaining. He opens the nearest cabinet and removes his mouthpiece, but before he can read the password aloud out comes the second TEMPLE GUARD!
As soon as she sees the Temple Guard door in the Room of the Secret Password open, Heather runs up into the Vault and jumps into the Great Chasm. She doesn't have much more than a minute left when she enters the Throne Room, but she gets off the Throne of the Pretender just before it turns all the way around. She runs through the Junction of the Secret Shafts and enters the Switch Inferno, but stops to grab the other half of her Pendant from one of the actuators in the Switch Inferno.
"She's got the other half Pendant!" Kirk announces, and the audience cheers a lot louder as Heather enters the Quicksand Bog with a full Pendant in hand. She then makes it up the Pharaoh's Secret Passage enters the Room of the Secret Password with a short 35 seconds left. She spits out her mouthpiece and reads off the first password: "OPEN SESAME!" This turns out to be the right one, and Heather enters the Shrine of the Silver Monkey with 25 seconds left only to meet the third TEMPLE GUARD!
Heather drops the halves of her Pendant and jumps up reach for the pieces of the statue on the shelves. She puts all three in place with five seconds left, then runs into the Room of the Ancient Warriors and grabs the JEWELED SWORD with two seconds left. She stands in place and holds the broken sword over her head, and Darrel claps as time expires.
"They did it!" Kirk announced to the shouting and cheering audience. "They brought it down to the last second, but they got the Sword in time! They get the XBOX 360s, the Toys 'R' Us gift cards, and they get to keep their confidence." Heather appears in the Great Chasm with the Sword. She jumps down into the gap with it and runs over to meet Kirk and Darrel. "I love this team, this strong Darrel-and-Heather team. But we gotta get outta here. I don't wanna go, but we gotta. Buh-bye!" All three of them wave to the camera, then Darrel and Heather high-ten each other as the credits roll.

Episode Summary
Episode 20: The Jeweled Sword of Charlemagne

Name of Artifact: The Jeweled Sword of Charlemagne
Season: 1
Layout: 4
Result: Failed escape
Team: Red Jaguars
Pendants Won: 1 ½
Location of Artifact: The Room of the Ancient Warriors

This might not have resulted in a victory, but it still kept me on the edge of my seat. Both Red Jaguars, Darrel and Heather, were fast and smart players who knew how to cope with a downright difficult layout, having to enter a total nine rooms before they could lay hands on the Sword. (I wonder if one or both of them had seen the original show before; their strategy sounded a lot like the path the players took in "The Jeweled Scabbard of Sforza" eleven years prior.)

During his time in the Temple, Darrel was only slowed down in the Switch Inferno by trying to complete its time-consuming objective. After discovering that no shortcuts opened, he ran into two consecutive Temple Guards in the Quicksand Bog and the Room of the Secret Password. Heather found the other half of her Pendant along the way, which she would need in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. She assembled the statue, grabbed the Jeweled Sword in the next room and, knowing that she had only a few seconds left, stood there and held it high to show Kirk and Darrel until time expired.

Trivia and Records:
This is the only Season 1 Temple Run in which the team meets all three guards in consecutive rooms. It's also the only episode in which Olmec kicks of the Moat instead of Kirk. Also odd about this episode is that Kirk's usual closing line was cut short for time. This time, he simply says goodbye before the credits roll.

Kind of late for a review now, but I just wanted to say that I really liked your ending to it. She didn't scramble thinking she could somehow make it out in 3 seconds like some of them on the show did. She just held the sword over her a pimp.
