THE CODEBOOK OF MATA HARI

MOAT: 5/10

The first player had to cross the moat by paddling across while sitting in a floating ring. Once they reached the other side, they had to throw the ring to their partner who then had to cross the same way. The hardest part of this moat was for the player to get the ring thrown to their partner. With that in mind, half of the moat was spent just for their partners to try and throw the floating ring to them. It was painful to watch this moat to drag on, but you can't really blame the players on this one. The S1 moats were almost never exciting anyways, and this one is no exception.

LEGEND: 8/10

Mata Hari was the most famous and most beautiful female spy of all time. Prior to World War I, Mata Hari moved to Paris and became a dancer. Soldiers and princes hopelessly fell in love with her, but she declined marriage with any of them. When WWI came about, Mata Hari worked as both a spy for the French and German. Working as a French Spy, her assignment was to have a German general and German prince fall in love with her so she could get secret information about their army. Working for the Germans, she got a French prince to fall in love with her and got secret information about the French army. The French found about Mata Hari being a double-crosser. They sentenced her to death by firing squad. Mata Hari refused to wear a blindfold and even blew kisses at her firing squad. No one ever found her Codebook after her death,

This was a very good and interesting legend. Legends did not have many stories around historical figures in WWI or WWII. It was a nice change of pace for once, and also very interesting to listen to. Mata Hari also sounded badass with how the legend play out. It actually made me want to do some research on her to learn more about her life as a spy.

STEPS OF KNOWLEDGE: 4/10

Too many bad answers were given out during this steps round. Some of these incorrect answers were obvious ones from the legend or common sense ones in real life. The Silver Snakes were the only team that didn't get any wrong answers. The highlight of this round was the Purple Parrot girl thinking that "camouflage" means the act of spying.

TEMPLE GAMES: 1/10

The two teams that faced off in this round were the Blue Barracudas (Gigi and Brian) and Silver Snakes (Garrett and Rinette). Now you might wonder why this temple game round gets a 1? It was a mixture of bad officiating by Kirk and the spotters and the poor temple game performance by the teams too. This has to be the worst temple game round on the show and it was so bad that some players got a half-pendant when they didn't deserve it. Read below for more details about how bad the temple games truly were.

Temple Game #1 - Codebook Exchange

On one side of the wall, there are two Codebooks with nothing on them. On the other side of the wall, there are two Codebooks with the initials "MH" on them. The player would have to climb the wall to grab a plain Codebook and then climb to the other side of it to exchange for an "MH" one. The "MH" one would then have to be brought to the other side and put in place of the regular one. The player that switched all four Codebook in 60 seconds wins. The final outcome of the temple games was Rinette being declared the winner because she was "furthest along". This is a load of bull because the Blue Barracuda boy reached the ground before Rinette even did. Actually, the whole concept for this temple game was confusing and Kirk said the Barracuda boy knocked down one of his Codebook when that didn't happen at all. As a result, Rinette was gifted a half-pendant that she did not deserve. At worst, the temple game score should've been a tie and not a Silver Snake win.

Temple Game #2 - Blowing Kisses to the Firing Squad

Garrett and Gigi were on a mat filled with soap on it. They had to crawl over to two corners and plant three "kisses" on each of the corners (who were suppose to represent the men of the firing squad). Garrett struggled a lot in this temple game while Gigi collected more kisses than him. She won with a score of 3-2.

Temple Game #3 - Underground Document Trading

You thought the first two temple games were bad? Well, this one gets even uglier. It was a epitome of awfulness jam-packed into 60 seconds. The preise of the temple game was that one player had to travel through a tunnel full of rubble while carrying a secret document. Their partner had to grab the document and put it into their team's bin. What is so bad about it? The Blue Barracuda girl. She couldn't even pull herself up the first hill of the dragon tunnel. She didn't even look like she was trying either. Her partner literally had to travel all the way to the other side of the tunnel to get a document. What the heck? On top of that, Kirk's commentary was annoying. He even makes a lame reference to Barney Rubble of the "Flintstones" since the teams were going through a lot of rubble.  Both teams only had 1 secret document a piece, but instead of calling a tie, Kirk rewarded the Silver Snakes the full pendant since he thought they were the "furthest along". Basically, the Blue Barracudas got screwed out of 1.5 pendants in the temple games due to Kirk's bull crap officiating.

TEMPLE RUN: 5/10

Season One contained dozens of temple layouts where the teams were plagued by one room away temple guards. This run was one of those many runs affected by this problem. Don't listen to what other people say about Garrett, he was actually a good player in the temple. He did have problems going through the Cave of Sighs and Holes of Python with his obesity, but he also moved at a good pace throughout the temple and even made it one room away from the Heart Room with 44 seconds on the clock. By the time he got taken out, there was no way this team would've even reached the Codebook. Rinette, on the other hand, was a bad player. Even if she had little time for herself, she should've attempted to make an effort to try and make it to where Garrett was taken out. She moved like a slug in the temple, sat on the Throne Room chair when the door was already open, and took her sweet time getting through the Holes of Python. The only way this team would've had a chance of winning was by encountering all three guards. But I am not sure if that was possible when Rinette didn't seem like a competent player at all. It was a just an average and boring temple run. The Silver Snakes wouldn't have won due to their slow speed and unfair temple guard placement anyways.

FINAL VERDICT: 4.6/10
The quality for most S1 episodes seem to be inferior to episodes in later seasons. This episode is no exception and it was very lackluster due to the lack of talent by either team and the poor officiating in the temple games. Seriously, this was the worst officiated temple game round on the show. Kirk took the "furthest along rule" way too seriously in this episode. As a result, we see half-pendants being rewarded to players who did not deserve it. Furthermore, the temple game performance was pretty poor also. Especially by the Blue Barracuda girl in the team game, where she could not even get it up the first hill in the Dragon Tunnel. The temple run is forgettable and uneventful. The Silver Snakes were a slow team and Rinette didn't look competent at all in the temple. And honestly, neither team looked impressive throughout the whole episode. So while the Silver Snakes were lackluster in the temple, it was better for them to make it there rather than the Blue Barracudas.

While this episode has a lot of bad to it, it also has some good also. The legend was actually very interesting and an excellent choice of a historical figure to have an episode plot revolve around. The legend is honestly is saving this episode from getting a lower score. Other than that though, I wouldn't really recommend this episode to anyone unless for the legend mostly. Everything else you should try to avoid unless it is for completion.

Mata Hari definitely has the worst temple game sequence ever. When Kirk takes the "furthest along" rule way too seriously, AND it's a poor temple game performance by both teams, you know it's gonna be a pretty horrible episode. And yeah, that Blue Barracuda girl was just pathetic. I mean, I wasn't very athletic or coordinated when I was 11-12 years old, but even I would've been able to make it up the dragon tunnel. I remember when THK ranked her she got a lower score than John, Tia, and Evan. His rankings of that episode got deleted in the database crash last year, but I remember THK's comments were "Wow, GG got worse than John and Tia? Fuck." I'm pretty sure her score was in the mid 3 range, maybe even lower than that too. Then again, the Silver Snakes were equally as pathetic. They kept on losing their scrolls. The temple game score should've been 2-1, Blue wins, not 1.5-0.5 with Silver winning. But looking at the Blue Barracudas performance, I doubt they would've done a better job. Imagine the Blue Barracuda girl in the temple. Truth be told, neither team deserved to win.

The temple run was an okay performance, I don't understand the hate for Gareth though. He actually moved fast through the rooms, the only problems he had were maneuvering through tight spaces because he was rather chubby. Rinette was just a lost cause. In 44 seconds, you should be able to make it further than the Holes of Python, even if you have no chance at winning. If she had gone in first instead, Gareth probably wouldn't even have a chance to enter the temple.

Oh well, great review. I knew it wasn't gonna make it to the 5 range. I'm not sure which episode I'm gonna review next. I'll probably do Great Seal next, which is a much better episode than Mata Hari. At least the Silver Snakes won their games fair and square.

Yeah, I definitely remember THK ranking the Blue Barracuda girl lower than John and Tia. :P And I actually agree with him too, she did crap the entire episode. Her partner was the one that answered all the questions in the Steps and she looked lousy in the moat. That temple game performance was beyond pathetic and it shouldn't have been that hard to pull yourself up that hill even if you weren't that athletic. Even chubby Garrett was able to pull himself up the dragon tunnel. I am not sure why Kirk didn't call the temple game a tie though. In the past, he would've done so for the exact same temple game. Season 1 had bad and inconsistent officiating anyways. :o But yeah, neither team was that great to begin with. But I am glad the Silver Snakes went into the temple because they were the more consistent team throughout the whole episode.

Great Seal is definitely a good choice of an episode. Some many memorable and funny moments in that episode. :P I am going to do the "Imperial Wizard" episode next. I know that episode by heart pretty much and don't need to watch the Youtube video except for screenshots. It was a good episode, minus the legend.

My turn to do a review, and this time it's "Henry VIII's Great Seal." :mrsilver:

HENRY VIII'S GREAT SEAL

MOAT: 7/10

For this moat, the players had to paddle across on a raft. Once across, their partners had to reel the raft back over to their side, and then cross in the same manner. It was a pretty quick round, and nobody really struggled. The Silver Snakes rang in first, with the Blue Barracudas following suit not long after ringing in second.

LEGEND: 7/10

This legend centered around Henry VIII, who wanted a son to be the heir of his throne. His first two wives gave him girls, but his third wife finally gave him a boy. Henry VIII's was still dissatisfied and got married three more times. Despite having a son, he was still unhappy and worried his son wouldn't be good enough to run his kingdom. The more bitter and unhappy he became, the fatter he got, and when he died, he needed to be buried in a small piano sized coffin! Henry VIII's sixth wife ended up keeping his Great Seal. Very interesting legend, while it could've used a little more detail, it was still good enough to warrant a decent rating.

STEPS OF KNOWLEDGE: 7/10

The Steps of Knowledge were a decent round. The Silver Snakes blazed through the steps and were on the final step in only four questions. The Blue Barracudas were sort of hesitant on the Steps. And they almost didn't get one answer in due to Jordan of the Blue Barracudas whispering his answers. It was the question about famous English bridges that didn't actually fall down, but moved to Arizona. Nonetheless, the answer "Londonbridge Londonbridge Londonbridge!" was accepted, and the Blue Barracudas eventually joined the Silver Snakes on the final step.

TEMPLE GAMES: 9/10

This was one of the best temple game segments in the shows history. I liked how it featured a unique set of games, instead of repeating the same ones over and over like most production days of Season 1 did. In the first game, Nick and Annie had to crown six of Henry VIII's wives, three heads on each side of the playing field. Both players struggled to get the crowns to stick, but finished off the game with a 4-4 tie. The most humorous part was Nick knocking Kirk down as he tried to help him up. I liked how Nick blamed the bungee chord for not being long enough too. In the second game, Shay and Jordan had to maneuver through the rarely used Bamboo forest, while wearing fat suits. Along with the comment of, "my have you gained weight" by Kirk. Tee hee. -_- Anyways, Jordan was incredibly fast in his game, so he ended up scoring the half pendant for his team. In the third game, the teams had to transfer cloths to each other in the middle of a soapy field. The Blue Barracudas kind of struggled in this game. They had quite some trouble with the transfers from head to head. That however helped the Silver Snakes win this game, with a score of 4-3. And with a pendant score of 1.5-1, the Silver Snakes go to the temple! Great match and very unique sequence, I wish more temple game rounds were like this.

TEMPLE RUN: 8/10

This was a solid temple run, despite the outcome. Both Shay AND Nick were startled by all three temple guards they encountered. Shay almost ran out of the temple when she ran into the first temple guard. On top of Kirk's comments on how "that just scared me!" Yeah, right Kirk, yeah right. Shay continued to move through the temple at a decent pace, though you can totally tell the temple guards frazzled her. She's removed from the temple in the Heart Room, where she was so scared she almost retreated down the latter. Nick goes in and he moved pretty quickly through every room he entered. He got slightly confused in the Shrine, checking the cabinets for monkey pieces. But, most contestants get confused in that room, so it wasn't a big deal. In the Pirate's Cove, he beelines straight to the Dungeon ladder, not needing to complete the objective. The production crew probably forgot to "re block" access, considering "The Moccasins of Geronimo" was filmed just before this episode. Nick makes it to the Tomb of the Ancient Kings with under 50 seconds to go. Where he is startled so badly by the temple guard he jumps right out of the temple! Priceless. XD Nick and Shay probably would've won if they had used the Gargoyle Room entrance instead of the Cave. Either way, still a great run nonetheless.

FINAL VERDICT: 7.6/10

This to me, was one of the best episodes of Season 1. Nick and Shay were a very strong team all day, and almost reached the artifact. If they had one more full pendant, or if they hadn't entered the Cave to start their run, they would've won for sure. I definitely recommend this episode, for the temple game sequence, and for the memorable ending to the temple run.

Great Seal is a classic episode and I never knew why people complained about it being shown on T90'sAAT. It was definitely better than "Bifocal Monocle" and "Attila the Hun". I know the whole episode by heart too. The legend was very good and historically accurate too. Henry VIII after all had at least 7 wives. So the legend was right about all the wives part. The "piano sized" coffin was a little dumb, but Legends always added their own spin to their stories and at least it wasn't out there line some other legends... *cough Galileo's Cannonball cough*

The temple games were some of the best in the series indeed. I remember the temple game interviews for Shay liking to collect glasses horses. :P The first temple game was memorable for Nick knocking over Kirk at the end of the game, and he gets his short all wet. I believe Nick stated in his interview that Kirk wasn't happy about that off cameras. :o Also, Nick was ashamed that he tied a game against a girl too. The second temple game was very unique. It was so unique that it was used only one time after "Great Seal". I liked the idea for the temple game, why didn't they use it more often in S1? It was much better than those soapy and slide climbing games. It was close competition throughout, but the Silver Snakes edged out and won.  :mrsilver:

The temple run is a classic too, and I am glad you gave this run a good score. It was the only triple capture I really like next to "Kamehameha". Shay and Nick were a good team, but the lack of a half-pendant was their downfall. It wasn't there fault though because it was not in plain view at all. The temple guard encounters added to the memorableness to this run. The first temple guard had Shay screaming right away. It even scared Kirk too. The second temple guard had Shay retreat back down the ladder with that weird laugh. The best moment though was when Nick was in the Tomb of the Ancient Kings and the temple guard scared him so bad that he jumped out of the temple! :P Luckily that didn't happen with a full pendant, but who knows what would've happened? It was a solid run and these two were good players.

Overall, good score and I definitely believe "Great Seal" deserves the high score it gets. It was one of the few enjoyable S1 episodes and triple capture episodes. I am glad that T90'sAAT chose to air this one.  :mrsilver:  :snakes2:

Yeah, I'm glad Teenick played this twice. It was a MUCH better pick than the utterly boring episodes like Attila the Hun and Bifocal Monocle. And the temple guard encounters definitely added to the excitement of the temple run. I'm glad the third temple guard was on the bottom floor of the temple. Imagine what would've happened if that encounter happened in the Observatory. I'm pretty sure TMH brought that up on his site once. Another thing brought up was "what if the temple guard was IN the sarcophagus" instead of the golden doors? I wonder how much further Nick would've jumped out of the temple then. He probably would've run out of the temple in that case.

Luckily there was railing at the top of the temple so that probably wouldn't ever have happened. :P The Tomb of the Ancient Kings guards in general were pretty scary. Lea from "Sultan Saladin" stumbled to the ground when she encountered her temple guard there and Tim from "Gordian Knot" also jumped out of the temple like Nick did in the Tomb.

But yeah, I am glad that T90'sAAT chose "Great Seal". I actually haven't watched that episode for a while before they showed it. I know episodes like "Bandit Queen" or "Mussel-Shell Armor" would've been a better choice, but you get tired of watching those after a while since you have seen the so many times. Great Seal was actually a gem of an episode and worth watching twice.  :P  :P

Another day, and another episode review. This time it is the beloved Wing Ding and Ring Ling.

THE MYSTICAL SPELLBOOK OF THE IMPERIAL WIZARD

MOAT: 7.5/10

I liked the moat that was used for this production day, and thought it was one of the best ones used in S3. The first player had to cross the moat by grabbing the rope out in the moat and swinging to the net in the middle. They then had to climb over the net and reach the other side of the moat. Their partner had to cross using the same method. Climbing the net was the tricky part because it was easy for the contestants to get tangled. It was a good moat, and none of the teams that clocked in struggled except the Silver Snake boy who could not get his foot untangled from the net.

LEGEND: 3/10

Emperor Wu-Ti was one of the greatest rulers of Ancient China. He loved the arts and shadow dancing was created for him. The Emperor's wife, Ling Ling, passed away suddenly and the distraught Emperor turned to his Wizard in hopes of returning his beloved wife to him. The Imperial Wizard could not revive his wife, and told the Emperor he could marry any woman in the land, some of them being Ring Ling and Wing Ding. The Emperor wanted his wife Ling Ling back and told the Imperial Wizard that if she isn't back in 24 hours, he will do away with him. The Imperial Wizard turned to his Mystical Spellbook for help, but he could not find a spell to bring Ling Ling back. When the Emperor summoned the Imperial Wizard, he provided a silhouette of a beautiful shadow behind a screen. It wasn't really his wife Ling Ling, but the Emperor was still impressed and promoted the Imperial Wizard to the title of Grand Brazier.

The legend was pretty much a story about an Emperor getting the love of his life back, but why the low score? The legend contained some childish lines, but the worst part about it was the racist names given to the two female Chinese women - Wing Ding and Ring Ling. The Legends producers seem to have the idea that any word rhyming in "ing" is an appropriate Chinese name. The name Ling Ling is fine, but Wing Ding and Ring Ling is definitely racist. It was also stupid names anyways. I am not sure what the producers were thinking when they made this legend, but they should've done a little more research for their names because they went overboard with this one.

STEPS OF KNOWLEDGE: 6/10

There were only 7 questions asked during the entire Steps of Knowledge round, and all of them were answered correctly. The Silver Snakes even swept the Steps while the Green Monkeys followed behind. Also, one of the questions asked was, "What was the name of the Emperor's Wife?" and one of the answers was Wing Ding.

TEMPLE GAMES: 7/10

The Green Monkeys were very dominant in Season 3, and Jared and Katie of the Green Monkeys swept the temple games. The Green Monkeys opponents were Larissa and Mike of the Silver Snakes. While the Green Monkeys were a strong team, the temple games were still pretty fun to watch. This was mostly due to the unique sequence of temple games used. Jared's temple game where he and the Silver Snake girl had to find different creepy stuff for a spell was pretty creative.

Temple Game #1 - Traverse the Bamboo Forest

In the first temple game, Mike and Katie had to traverse through a Bamboo Forest in order to find the Imperial Wizard's cave. In order to do so, they had to step on a pole. If the pole is incorrect, it will sink to the bottom of the pit and the player had to start over. Once the player finds the correct path to the Imperial Wizard cave will be the winner. The temple game was very close and both players made it far, but Katie was victorious with less than 10 seconds left.

Temple Game #2 - Ingredients for the Wizard's Spell

Jared and Larissa had to collect different ingredients in order to make a Wizard's spell. They had to collect the various ingredients by climbing on a spider web and grabbing the ingredients from the other side. The player with the most ingredients after 60 seconds will be the winner. Jared was able to get all 6 ingredients into the cauldron before time was up. One weird quirk to this temple game was both Jared and Larisa dropped one of their ingredients. It wasn't until the last few seconds of their game when Kirk told them he could retrieve them.

Temple Game #3 - Shadow Dancing

Both teams were strapped to a wall and hooked together by a chain. They had to guide each other through a mini maze and reach the opening at the bottom. In order for them to be successful, the players had to work together. In the end, Jared and Katie were victories and swept the temple games with a score of 2-0.

TEMPLE RUN: 6.5/10

The Green Monkeys faced a pretty lengthy layout, but there was no reason why they couldn't have reached the Mystical Spellbook. Jared was a decent moving runner when it came to his pace, but he hesitated a little too much also. In the beginning of the run, he wasted more time than usual in the Crypt and climbing the Pit of the Pendulum wall. After being forced down into the Pit, he was forced to climb up the wall and entered the King's Storeroom. He completed the top floor rooms just fine and even had a very fast Silver Monkey assembly. However, his biggest mistake was after assembling the Silver Monkey, he entered the Dark Forest and tried completing the room objective. There was no reason for him to reach inside the trees and he just wasted time doing this. When he finally got the hint that he had to plow through the wall, he was taken out in the Quicksand Bog.

Katie was an amazing secondrunner. While she had very little time to herself, she raced all the way to the other side of the temple and entered directly into the Quicksand Bog from the Shrine (unlike Jared). Unfortunately, time was up for her as she was climbing the Quicksand Bog. Katie's speed as a second runner is a perfect example how the second runner that has a clear path should move. She definitely used her time to her advantage. If Katie had went into the temple first, this team would've definitely reached the Mystical Spellbook.

FINAL VERDICT: 6.0/10
This episode had potential to be an underrated gem, but there are certain areas that hurt it. The legend hurt the episode's score a lot. What were the producers thinking when they named the two Chinese female figures Wing Ding and Ring Ling? The names are very offensive and sound stupid. The rest of the episode was above average, and Jared and Katie were a good team. The temple games were fun and the Green Monkeys put up a good effort in the temple run. The whole episode is definitely worth a view, and it is not bad by any means. Just don't expect a lot of exciting moments though. And if you are interested, there is also an interview by Katie of the Green Monkeys from this episode. It is pretty interesting to read along with watching this episode.

Mystical Spellbook was just an average episode. The only thing I remember it by was the ridiculous legend, and Jared's stalling in the Dark Forest. Seriously, Wing Ding? Ring Ling? Racist much, Legends producers? As for the temple run, Katie should've gone first. She would've left Jared plenty of time to at least reach the Spellbook. Doubt they would've won though. And I also remember Katie's interview, and how her and Jared didn't get along at all. I remember one tidbit where she said "Jared was so pissed at me after the temple run was over. You could tell he was angry at me because we lost the temple run." Hello.... Jared was the one who hesitated and wasted all that time. How is that Katie's fault? Jared sounds like a jerk, and someone who just wanted to be on the show to gain 15 minutes of fame. :?

Overall, great review. I might do Mush Pot Hat next, either that or Melted Head. By the looks of the OP, you look like you want to do a lot of episodes next. Good luck with that, especially with the likes of Shiva and Enormous Feather. :o

Yeah, Jared sounded like a douchebag for sure. Katie said he was only interested in the Purple Parrot girl and didn't pay attention to the temple run details. That makes sense considering he should've known that you only had to complete the Dark Forest if you were trying to enter the Shrine. And Katie didn't do anything wrong either, it was Jared's fault they lost. I am not sure why he thought that. In fact, Katie was more of a role model on what a second runner would be like.

And yeah, I am going to do Enormous Feather and Shiva. :P I have been wanting to do Enormous Feather for months now and I already have the temple run and legend write-up complete. That will be my next project I think. I want to do Shiva also to see how low it ranks. :o The other 3 I will work with is Bandit Queen, Broken Trident, and Sultan Suleiman. :P

Mush Pot Hat is a good choice. It was one of the few enjoyable Orange Iguanas episodes I liked. The temple run was pretty exciting too, and it was very close. Plus, it was the only moat from that day that didn't take forever.  :P Madame Tussaud is also a classic and quirky one.

I might do "Empress Eugenie" to with the above five. Another very exciting episode with a very exciting temple loss. Minus a certain player though.

I think Jared's asshole-ish personality is what irritates me about the run even more. He wasn't paying any attention during the temple run, but blames Katie? Even his whole demeanor just before he entered the temple screamed stand offish to me. :? I also remember Katie saying in her interview Jared wanted to go first in the temple run on the grounds that "she went first in all the other rounds." She even said she had a much better time chilling with the girl on the Silver Snakes than she did with Jared.

Good luck with Enormous Feather. I would love to see how low that ranks. I was rooting for the Parrots in the temple games. :( I'll probably do Mush Pot Hat next, and have it posted by tomorrow. I'm not sure if I can completely write an episode review from memory. So I might have to do a little rewatching.

My turn to review another episode. This time it's "The Mush Pot Hat of Johnny Appleseed."

THE MUSH POT HAT OF JOHNNY APPLESEED

MOAT: 7/10
MOAT: 7.5/10 (TRJ)

For this moat, the players had to balance on a shaky log. If you fell in, you had to go back and start all over again. This was a solid round and this was literally the only group of kids that did NOT struggle with this moat. And it's by far the shortest moat featuring the shaky log. The Orange Iguanas and the Silver Snakes were the first to cross, by gonging in simultaneously. The Green Monkeys were third to finish, and the Blue Barracudas rang in last not long after.

(TRJ's description)

The infamous "shaky log" moat! This moat is memorable for having one of the longest moat crossings on the show. It even took 45 minutes to complete one moat crossing! How did it work? The first player had to cross the moat while balancing themselves on a log that tilts. Their partner had to hold the log steady for them so they could cross. When their partner made it across, then the second player had to cross the same way. When both teams made it across, then they could hit their gongs to move on. What made this crossing so difficult? It was hard for their partners to balance the log because it required a lot of strength. As for the moat in this episode, it was actually... pretty decent! The Silver Snakes and Orange Iguanas got across on their first try, and the Green Monkeys followed closely in third, and the Blue Barracudas not long afterwards. It surprisingly looked like a decent moat crossing despite the fact that every other episode during this day had a long ass moat. For this reason, I am going to give this moat extra credit for having good teams and for having a unique moat objective.

LEGEND: 7/10
LEGEND: 7/10 (TRJ)

The legend centers around John Chapman, who often went by the name Johnny Appleseed. The reason for the name was because of his love for planting appleseeds. He wore mush pot for a hat, a coffee sack shirt, and he did not wear shoes. About a week after his introduction, Johnny came back to warn everyone of Indians and settlers fighting in a close by town. Some people wanted to fight, but Johnny convinced everyone to just hide. Fortunately, the Indians left town when they found the place to be deserted. As a reward, the town gave Johnny a new mush pot hat, and threw out the old one. Decent legend in my opinion, though it could've used more detail.

(TRJ's description)

On a hot summer day in 1812, a strange looking man walked into Mansfield, Ohio. His name was John Chapman. He wore a Mush Pot for a hat, a coffee sack for a shirt, and walked around barefoot. He introduced himself as Johnny Appleseed because he wanted around the country planting nothing but appleseeds. He reached into his sack to hand people his seeds and went on his way. About a week later, Johnny returned to town and warned the townsfolk about a battle between Indians and settlers in a neighboring town and told them to "get out of town". Some men wanted to stay and fight, but Johnny convinced them that the best thing would be to stay and hide. When the Indians came into town, they found it deserted and rolled on. Legend has it, the people of Mansfield gave Johnny a new Mush Pot Hat and he threw away the old hat before it made its way to Olmec's Temple.

In my opinion, Johnny Appleseed was a pretty interesting historical figure to talk about. He was somebody we heard about a lot as children, so it was an appropriate figure to talk about given the target audience were mostly little kids. They did a good job sticking to the original Appleseed story on how he was a kind and simple folklore hero. I liked how they describe his clothing in detail to show how simple he was. The legend was kind of short, but it got to the point with no crazy plot points or stupid characters. On the downside, this legend sort of sounded exactly like a Season 1 legend with how short it was and how the intro started. But it was still early Season 2, so it is understandable.

STEPS OF KNOWLEDGE: 6/10
STEPS OF KNOWLEDGE: 8/10 (TRJ)

This was a pretty average round, apart for the letting three answers slide. The question was "How far did Johnny run to warn the settlers?" The choices were 30 miles, 30 kilometers, and 300 days, in which the Green Monkeys got the correct answer, 30 miles. The Orange Iguanas however, were the first team to reach the final step, with the Green Monkeys joining them not long after. Close match, as it was a three way tie on the second to last step, and it was only a matter of who rang in first.

(TRJ's description)

This Steps of Knowledge round was pretty interesting for several reasons. First off, this was one of the very few times where Olmec accepted 3 answers for the same question. The only other time this happened was in "Missing Eye", which was filmed a few days after this episode. Another interesting part about this round was the close competition. There was only a couple of wrong answers given out in the question I talked about earlier with Olmec. Other than that, the teams got their questions correct and there was even a 3-way tie on the second to last step between Green, Orange, and Silver. Orange Iguanas came from behind to be the first temple to win this round, and the Green Monkeys followed suit. Overall, this was a pretty eventful and close SoK round which was interesting for the close competition and the multiple answers allowed by Olmec.

TEMPLE GAMES: 7/10
TEMPLE GAMES: 8/10 (TRJ)

The temple games were average, and had a pretty neat sequence. In the first game, Angela and Andrea had to climb up a mountain and plant appleseeds with their pegs. Not much else to say except Angela won that game. In the second game, Chris and Jamal used the zip line game to transfer apples to the opposite side. Jamal was kind of sloppy, but Chris got a good rhythm down. In the end, the game ended in a 4-4 tie. In the third game, the teams had to harvest apples by using the rotating lever game. Both teams were pretty sloppy, and Angela kept missing the buckets. The game also ended in a 4-4 tie, but the Orange Iguanas go to the temple after beating the Green Monkeys 2-1.5.

(TRJ's description)

The temple games featured Angela and Chris of the Orange Iguanas facing off against Jamaal and Andrea of the Green Monkeys. In the first temple game, Angela and Andrea had to climb a mountain with pegs in order to plant appleseeds. In order to score, they will have to find the correct hole with their peg that will shoot out debris from the top. The player that finds the most correct holes after 60 seconds will win. The temple game between these two lasses were close, but Angela came out on top with a 3-2 score. In the second temple game, Chris and Jamaal had to transfer apples between platforms via a zipline. Basically, the boys had to grab apples from one side of the platform, put it into their sack, and transfer it to the other side and put it in their bin. They then had to go back and repeat the same process. The player with the most apples in their bins after 60 seconds would win. Despite Jamaal always being ahead in for almost all of the game, Chris managed to score at the last second to create a 5-5 tie. The Pendant score was now 1-0.5 moving onto the team game! In the team temple game, the two teams had to work together to harvest some apples. One player had to jump up and grabbed an apple from the pillar and then jump down and put it into their team bin. Their partners had to jump up next while the other player was dropping off an apple. The key to this game is coordination and both players had to work together to stay in synch or else they could be missing their apples. The team with the most apples in their bins after 60 seconds will win. The temple game ended in a tie, but the temple game was pretty sloppy as both teams were missing their apples and everyone was off-balance. Also, Kirk had trouble keeping track of the score because he kept saying that the Green Monkeys were ahead even though Orange was tied with them all along. In the end, the final score was 2-1.5 in favor of the Orange Iguanas. With 2 Pendants, Chris and Angela are granted the right to enter Olmec's Temple! :mrorange:

This was an exciting temple games sequence that featured close competition and some unique temple games. The two individual games were some of the most uncommon games of Season 2. The "zipline" one was one of my personal favorites too. In addition, this episode was VERY close to being a 2-2 final result. If Andrea had found another hole in her temple game, it would've been a 3-3 score and all of the temple games would've been tied. That would've made this episode even more unique!

TEMPLE RUN: 6/10
TEMPLE RUN: 7/10 (TRJ)

The Orange Iguanas in this run faced a rather tough layout. It reminded me a lot like "The Medal of Sir Edmund Hilary," only no Troubled Bridge and one less temple guard encounter. Chris doesn't last too long in the temple, as he is removed from the King's Storeroom, his fourth room, with 2:10 remaining. Angela races in and she does an okay job. She wastes about 10 seconds climbing out of the Pit, but she eventually makes it to the King's Storeroom, or "The Pottery Room" as Kirk calls it. -_- After assembling the monkey, she's forced to take the Shrine/Shaft passage, ride the elevator to the Viper's Nest, where she grabs the Mush Pot Hat with 21 seconds left! She doesn't take a bad exit out, but she does trip up the King's Storeroom/Observatory stairs, and breaks the Mush Pot Hat handle in the process. Alas, she jumps into the Pit, and races to the Ledges, where her time runs out there. If Chris had started in the Ledges instead of the Crypt, they probably would've had a better chance at winning.

(TRJ's description)

Angela and Chris were a fast team in the temple, but they did not taste victory due to a long layout and slight hesitations by the second runner. Chris entered the temple first and met his first temple guard in the Crypt. After a sweet dive into the Pit, he chose the higher route by taking the Observatory on the top most floor. He is eventually removed from the King's Storeroom with 2:10 on the clock. Angela follows Chris' path, where she performs another nice jump into the Pit. After hesitating a little bit in the Pit and the Observatory, she quickly picks up where Chris left off in the King's Storeroom and is allowed entry into the Shrine. Now being one room away, she finishes the Silver Monkey with 0:52 seconds left! Only to find out...that only the Mine Shaft door opened. After losing a lot of time with the slow elevator, she grabs the Mush Pot Hat with 21 seconds left! While running out of the temple, Angela trips and breaks the handle off the artifact in the Observatory. With time winding down, she makes a last ditch effort for the Ledges but time ends while she is in the crawl tube. Overall, this was a pretty exciting temple run featuring a strong team. The main reason they lost was due to the slow Mine Shaft elevator and hesitations by Angela. Other than that, this temple run was fun to watch and Angela breaking the artifact was pretty memorable too.

FINAL VERDICT: 6.6/10
FINAL VERDICT: 7.5/10 (TRJ)

This was a pretty average episode. Every round was close and the temple games featured good competition. But other than that, there's really nothing noteworthy that goes on in this episode. The Orange Iguanas  however, were a strong team all day, and they almost reached the Mush Pot Hat. The layout they got was just lengthy, and it diminished their chances at winning. When an artifact is in the top corner of the temple, and the players are forced to use the diagonal passage, you know the team is gonna have a tough time winning. Nonetheless, it's still a watchable episode and I definitely recommend it, especially compared to all the other episodes on the "shaky log" filming day.

(TRJ's description)

Overall, "Mush Pot Hat" was the shining star on a production day plagued with average and horrible moats and episodes. From start to finish, every round was enjoyable and eventful. The moat was above and beyond the best crossing on this production day and it actually made the "shaky log" moat look like a good idea. The Steps of Knowledge and temple games were also very close and featured some interesting details like Olmec allowing 3 answers in the SoK and some unique games featured in the temple games. The temple run ended in a failed escape, but it was a good effort by Chris and Angela and the majority of the loss can be blamed on the slow Mine Shaft elevator. Overall, this was a high quality episode and I definitely recommend it for viewing. Especially since I am not a big fan of the Orange Iguanas myself.

I liked the "Mush Pot Hat" episode, and it was one of the few Orange Iguana episodes that was only good. The moat for this episode was the only really where the teams never seem to struggle. "Empress Theodora" wasn't too bad, but this was the quickest one out of the whole day. I remember reading about Johnny Appleseed in school, and the legend does seem pretty accurate from the version I remember. Although I thought the artifact was a little silly. :P And I forgot that this episode had the "three choices for one answer" though. I think that happened in another episode though, but not sure which one?  :?:

The temple games were a very good watch too, and it had a rare 2-1.5 score. I also liked the unique temple games that were used. The zipline temple game and mountain climbing game wasn't used much in S2. I like temple games where a game is hardly ever used. The temple games even came close to a 2-2 pendant tie like in Empress Theodora. :o The temple run was pretty exciting as far as Orange Iguana losses go. Chris was a beast in the temple and I love his dramatic dive into the Pit. :P He didn't make it very far in the temple, but was taken out with respectable time on the clock. Angela was a good secondrunner, but she stalled in a couple of places like the Pit and King's Storeroom. Too bad this team was forced to take the Mine Shaft, because they would've won if it wasn't for the slow ass elevator. But still, she came very close in being the Mush Pot Hat out of the temple and even reached the Ledges with it. That is pretty good considering Angela only grabbed it with what, 20+ seconds on the clock? Jason from "Icarus" couldn't even bring it out with 50+ seconds to himself.

This was a good episode, and I like it as far as Orange Iguana episodes go. They were a good team and the temple run was pretty exciting. There were better losses on the show, but this still come close to the top 10 losses though. If they didn't stall so much though, they would've won for sure. I would definitely recommend this episode easily.  :mrorange:

Time to move onto our next episode, which will be the dreaded "Enormous Feather" episode. Yeah, I don't have much to say about this one. The review below will do most of the talking.

THE ENORMOUS FEATHER OF THE ME LINH

MOAT: 5/10

In this moat, the players had to cross by sliding on their bellies across a slippery path and reach the other side without falling into the water or not making it all the way across. Once they made it to the other side, their partner's had to cross the same way. It was a pretty creative moat, but there was no exciting moments or competition at all. The Purple Parrots rang in first with the Silver Snakes, Blue Barracudas, and Orange Iguanas a few seconds later respectively for each team.

LEGEND: 6/10

Two of the bravest sisters to ever live were the Queens of Vietnam, Chun Chak and Chun Ne (sp?). The sisters heard of a legend of a bird called the Me Linh, which moved across the sky in a flash. When the Me Linh appeared, the Vietnamese would be free.
For centuries, the Vietnamese were subjected to harsh ruling under the Chinese. The sisters decided to raise an army to overthrow the Chinese rulers. One night, the Vietnamese rebels attacked the Chinese by surprise. The Chinese fought back and an a battle ensured. During the battle though, the Me Linh appeared and one of the sisters grabbed it's Enormous Feather before it flew away. In the end, the Vietnamese won and the sisters became Queen of Vietnam.

The legend for this episode was decent, but it had a few silly moments and some bad voiceacting like most of Season 3 legends did. It wasn't as exciting as some of the other Legends on the show, but I didn't find it bad at all. It gave good details and it was interesting for them to use a legend about Vietnam.

STEPS OF KNOWLEDGE: 7/10

This was a pretty competitive round with some memorable moments. One of the questions asked "How fast was the Me Linh?", and one of the answers given by the Purple Parrots was "Really, really fast?" And Olmec answered "That is really, really correct." The producers seemed to be pretty lenient about their answers in general in this Steps of Knowledge round. The Orange Iguanas were the last tea to answer, but they still came back and answered the last 3/4 questions to go onto the temple.

TEMPLE GAMES: 5/10

The temple games featured Karisa, who liked to play softball and draw, and her partner David who was into roller hockey and collected sports cards of the Orange Iguanas. Their rival team was Molly, who was a cheer leader, and Joey, who was a fisherman of the Purple Parrots. The Purple Parrots have never beat the Orange Iguanas in the temple games at all. This episode was no exception also. The Purple Parrots have also had many tiebreaker losses against this team also in the past too like "Nostradamus" and "Butch Cassidy". The Orange Iguanas won their first two temple games, with the Purple Parrots winning the team game. The Orange Iguanas were the team granted entry into Olmec's temple in the end.

Temple Game #1 - Chinese Army vs. Vietnamese Army

David and Joey had four soldiers on their side of the field, and it was their job to knock down all four of their opponent's soldiers with a giant boulder. At the same time, they also had to block the boulder from knocking their own soldiers down. The player with the most soldiers standing in the end of 60 seconds would win. David won this temple game with a score 2-1.

Temple Game #2 - Collect Arrows

Karisa and Molly were upside down and had to collect arrows for the Vietnamese army. The player that collected the most arrows would be deemed the winner. Molly struggled a little bit in this game and Karisa also struggled a little bit in the end. Karisa won with a score of 4-2.

Temple Game #3 - Smash the Chinese Statues

The final temple game had the players smashing the leftover Chinese statues. One player on each team was inside a large sack, which was to be used to knock over the statues. Their partner had to push the player in the sack towards the statues in order to knock them down. The player in the statue could also move around in the sack in order to assist in knocking down the statues. The player that knocked down the most statues would be the winner. The Purple Parrots were the more dominant team in this episode and knocked  all three of their statues knocked down. With the Parrots winning, the teams were going to a tiebreaker.

TEMPLE RUN: 3/10

Usually, temple runs ending in a failed escape where the contestants fail to bring the artifact out of the temple usually are the most exciting temple runs. However, this one fails to have any excitement. In fact, it was so frustrating and pitiful. David was a fast contestant in the temple and he raced along the bottom floor of the temple and made good time. He was removed from the Dark Forest with two minutes left. Karisa was one of the most horrible second runners on the show. She took her sweet time just to get where David was left off. She pretty much walked through the whole temple also. Her "star moment" of this run was when she didn't know how to get past the Quicksand Bog. Really? That was the easiest room of Season 3. Even Kirk felt that she was too tentative and slow. Somehow, Karisa made it to the Enormous Feather with some time left. Even after grabbing the artifact, she still makes no attempt to speed up. She was pathetic and brought this run down a lot. This temple run is not exciting by any means and you probably want to avoid watching it because of how bad Karisa was in the temple. I would've rather had this episode end in triple capture instead of watching Karisa piss away all that time.

FINAL VERDICT: 5.2/10
The Orange Iguanas had a lot of weak episodes on the show, and this was one of the many weak episodes the team possessed. The rounds of this episode were pretty mixed too. Some of the rounds were strong, while some of the other rounds were weak. The episode in general was boring and weak though. Karisa and David scraped by the whole episode and it felt like they didn't deserve to go to the temple. The most frustrating part about this temple though is the temple run. Karisa was one of the dumbest and most frustrating contestants to watch in the temple. Even Kirk and David were getting pissed off at her. How a player like her even makes it to the temple is an anomaly. David carried her through most of the episode it felt anyways. In the end though, it was a boring and mediocre episode. I wouldn't really bother watching it after your first view. The Purple Parrots would've made it a better temple team anyways.
