The Legend:
KIRK:
As the quest continues, it?s now time for Olmec to tell us about the tattered emblem of the Big Red One. But teams, you?re going to have to pay attention, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you a step closer to Olmec?s Temple.
OLMEC:
Serving under the motto ?Duty First,? The US 1st Infantry Division is the longest continuing military service of the American Army and have been the idols for modern warfare since their beginning. The Division was first formed in 1917 on Governor?s Island in New York, and consisted mostly of men who were previously monitoring the US-Mexico border. Their leader was George S. Patton.
PATTON:
All right you grunts, I bet you were thinking that America was never going to get involved with the Great War, but guess what? We?re going over there to personally accept our welcome gift.
OLMEC:
Each troop was given a special patch to sew onto the sleeves of their uniform: a red numeral one on a tan background, representing themselves and future members as the first American army men to set foot on the battlefield during wars. Their nickname, The Big Red One, came as a result of this emblem?s appearance.
PATTON:
We?re shipping out to Europe, and when we return, we?ll be heroes.
OLMEC:
The infantry landed on the shores of France to assist the tired French soldiers.
FRENCH SOLDIER:
Mon Dieu! Thank you for your help. The Germans are relentless foes, and we would surely be defeated if not for your assistance. Can I get you some cheese? Coffee, perhaps?
OLMEC:
On the infantry?s way to Paris, they came across a French town which had been conquered by the Germans. The American troops armed, and were able to reclaim the city after only 45 minutes of fighting. They also crossed the Rhone into German territory; further than any troops in any nation?s army had done in this war.
PATTON:
Stay in your own country, you German losers!
OLMEC:
The German?s knew they were defeated and retreated back into their established borders. An armistice was signed shortly thereafter ending the war. A lack of care for one of the American soldier?s uniforms caused it to fall apart at the seams. The emblem from the sleeve blew in the winds until it finally made its way to the temple. Your quest is to find the tattered emblem, and bring it back here.
KIRK:
Thank you, Olmec. Tell us, where is this tattered emblem?
OLMEC:
The Tattered Emblem of The Big Red One can be found in the Quicksand Bog.
The Steps of Knowledge:
KIRK:
Players, you are now standing on the Steps of Knowledge. In a minute, Olmec is going to ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you. If you?re right, you?ll move down to the next level. If you?re wrong or run out of time, I?m going to give the other teams a chance to answer. The first two teams to make it to the bottom level (Kirk descends steps for emphasis) will be one step closer to Olmec?s Temple. Olmec, we are now ready for your first question.
