The camera makes its way through lush greenery, and the palms move away as ambient animal noises are heard. Portions of a temple are shown, and suddenly the jungle ends, and we see Olmec?s face light up and shout, ?LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE!?

The show?s title card?a pendant of life?crashes together on the screen, and the camera shifts to focus on the temple and its rooms. ?With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is now!?

The pendant splinters and Kirk is seen crawling out of the Jungle Crevice to run right into the center of the stage and up the Steps of Knowledge as he begins his narration.

?Thank you, thank you!? says Kirk. ?It's nice to see you! Thank you, Olmec. Welcome to the Legends of the Hidden Temple. The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple. Which one are we going to hear about today??

Olmec replies, ?The Legend of The Stolen Shovel of Erik the Red!?

?Woah, the Stolen Shovel of Erik the Red,? says Kirk. ?Well, the legend is set and one of these six teams will have the chance to retrieve the Stolen Shovel? Will it be The Red Jaguars??

At this point, the camera focuses on each team as they are introduced.

?The Blue Barracudas??
?The Green Monkeys??
?The Orange Iguanas??
?The Purple Parrots??
?Or the Silver Snakes??

?They?re going to have to pass some tough mental and physical tests,? continues Kirk, ?and in the end, only one team will have the right to enter Olmec?s temple, but first they have to cross the moat, and Olmec?s gonna tell us how they have to do it today.?

Olmec instructs:
?Before you, an ancient post protrudes from the water, and in front of it is an old vine. When Kirk gives the signal, climb up the ladder and onto the tip of the pole. Then, grab the rope and swing out to the other platform, and slide down to the deck. Then your partner will climb up the post, swing out to the platform and slide onto the other side. When the second player reaches the other side, run over and hit the gong!?

Kirk hits the Silver Snakes? gong to demonstrate, which?in turn?lights up a bright silver.

?The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round,? finishes Olmec. ?Alright teams, let?s get this a? rollin?!? says an excited Kirk. ?Teams?are you ready??

The teams excitedly reply, ?Yeeaahhhh!?

Kirk then asks, ?Olmec?are you ready??

?Yesssss,? replies Olmec.

?Okay,? says Kirk, ?Teams?on your marks, get set?GO!?

The camera switches to an angle showing six players scrambling up the staples in the post. ?Oh, it?s slippery!? narrates Kirk just as the girl on the Blue Barracudas loses her balance and falls down a couple of rungs. ?They?re gonna? get that rope and swing? Nice job, Red Jaguars!? he says as the boy on the Red Jaguars gets to the platform and slides down on his back in one fluid motion. ?I think I?m gonna enjoy myself today!? says Kirk, observing the stage-right side of the Moat. ?Silver Snakes doing well, so are the Purple Parrots. It looks like? We?re gonna have our first team?it?s the Green Monkeys!? The boy on the Green Monkeys scrambles to the gong and smashes it with his fist, then celebrates with his partner.

Panning back to the wooden slides, the girls on the Purple Parrots and Silver Snakes are sliding down, with the Blue Barracudas and the Orange Iguanas in a wild attempt to play catch-up. ?Here come the Silver Snakes!? says Kirk, as the girl picks herself off the ground, then runs over to hit the gong, as do? ?The Purple Parrots!? yells Kirk as they gong in as well. ?And the Red Jaguars! We?ve got our four teams, right there!?

The camera shows Kirk with the energized Silver Snakes. ?Going on to the Steps of Knowledge are the Silver Snakes? and the Purple Parrots? and the Green Monkeys? and the Red Jaguars!

?The Blue Barracudas and the Orange Iguanas gave it a great effort too,? reminds Kirk. ?They?re not going away empty handed?we?ve got a great gift for ?em and here?s what it is!?

Dee reads the prize:

The screen transitions to a shot of the four teams atop the Steps of Knowledge. ?As the quest continues,? says Kirk, ?it?s now time for Olmec to tell us about The Stolen Shovel of Erik the Red. But teams?pay attention, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you a step closer to Olmec?s temple.?

Olmec narrates the legend:
?One of the fiercest Vikings of all time was Erik the Red. He was born in Norway, but was known for making his own settlement in Greenland. But he was still as vicious as a child as he was when he grew up. According to legend, his parents took him to Iceland after being charged for murder, but soon their son was causing as much trouble as they had.

??This is the most snow I?ve ever seen!? yelled Erik?s neighbor. ?I need a shovel!?

??Alright, I get it, I get it,? replied Erik loudly. ?Take mine first?? And he tossed the shovel over the fence and heard the crunch of his neighbor scooping out the ever-collecting ice.

?But after many days, the shovel had not returned. Erik lost his temper, then stormed into his neighbor?s house to steal it back. Legend has it, he not only angrily snatched away the spade, but also killed his neighbor. When he grew up, he kept the shovel as a form of remembrance of his childhood?but eventually it disappeared and found its way to the temple! Your quest is to find the Stolen Shovel of Erik the Red and bring it back here.?

?Thank you Olmec,? says Kirk after a short pause, ?so tell us?where is the Stolen Shovel??

?The Stolen Shovel of Erik the Red can be found? in the Vine Drop,? reveals Olmec. A shot shows the camera panning quickly across the top floor, then stopping and zooming in on the shovel lying on the front pedestal.

?Remember that, teams,? reminds Kirk. ?Teams?you are now standing on the Steps of Knowledge. In a minute, Olmec?s gonna ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you. If you?re right, you?ll move down to the next level, but if you?re wrong or run out of time, I?m gonna have to give the other teams a chance to answer. The first two teams that make it to the bottom level? will be one step closer to Olmec?s temple. Olmec, we?re now ready for your first question??

Olmec asks: ?Was Erik the Red?a pirate, a Viking, or??

The Red Jaguars stomp down: ?A Viking!?

?That is correct,? says Olmec. ?Alright, step down, Red Jaguars!? narrates Kirk. ?Next question, Olmec??

Olmec asks: ?Which of these people was Erik the Red NOT the father of?Freydis, Leif Erikson, or??

The Green Monkeys interrupt: ?Freydis??

?Incorrect,? replies Olmec. ?The three choices were: Freydis, Leif Erikson, or Ulf Henriccson??

After a silence, a high-pitched chirp sounds. ?Time?s up!? says Olmec. ?The correct answer was Ulf Henriccson.?

?Alright,? says Kirk. ?Let?s hear a new question, Olmec??

Olmec asks: ?Did Erik the Red create a settlement on?Ireland, Greenland, or Redland??

The Red Jaguars hesitantly hit the marking: ?Greenland??

?That is correct,? declares Olmec. ?Nice job, Red Jaguars!? comments Kirk, ?and now they?re just one step away from the temple games! Still plenty of time in this game, though. Olmec?next question.?

Olmec asks: ?According to our legend, did Erik lend his neighbor??

The Purple Parrots ring in quickly: ?A shovel!?

?That is correct,? responds Olmec. ?Alright, Purple Parrots are on the board!? says Kirk as they move down to the second step. ?Next question??

Olmec asks: ?Was Erik?English, Norwegian, or Russian??

The Silver Snakes buzz in and guess: ?Norwegian??

?That is correct,? answers Olmec, and they step down to join the Purple Parrots. ?There?s a tie on the second step!? announces Kirk. ?Still time for the Blue Barracudas? Next question, please!?

Olmec asks: ?Did Erik?s neighbor borrow the shovel?to find treasure, to clear snow, or to transport mud??

After a short silence, The Red Jaguars press their marking: ?To shovel the snow???

?That? is correct,? Olmec replies hesitantly. ?We?ve got our first team going on to the temple games!? narrates Kirk. ?T?looks like it?s the Red Jaguars!? The team celebrates as they jump onto?and up and down on?the bottom step. ?Who?s going to be our second team? We?ll need to find out! Next question, Olmec.?

Olmec asks: ?Did Erik?s parents flee to Norway?because they were accused of murder??

The Silver Snakes stomp down: ?Because they were acew? accused of murder??

?That? is? correct,? says Olmec. ?Step down, Silver Snakes!? says Kirk. ?It was a bit of a mouthful, but they?re now one step away from the temple games! This match is getting hotter and hotter?but we need a new question. Olmec??

Olmec asks: ?Do Vikings wear?helmets of pure silver??

The Silver Snakes ring in early: ?Uh? helmets of pure silver??

?That is incorrect,? says Olmec. ?The other two choices were?helmets with horns, or??

The Green Monkeys cut in: ?Helmets with horns...??

?That is correct!? exclaims Olmec. ?Alright, the Green Monkeys are on the board!? says Kirk. ?We?ve got a game going today here on the Steps of Knowledge! Olmec, next question please??

Olmec asks: ?Did Erik?s son, Leif Erikson, later go on to conquer?Newfoundland, Cuba, or California??

The Silver Snakes step on the marking: ?Newfoundland??

?That is correct!? says Olmec. ?These two teams are going on to the temple games!? yells Kirk as he runs over to the bottom step to hi-five the four qualifying players. ?They are the Silver Snakes? and the Red Jaguars! The Green Monkeys and the Purple Parrots gave it a great effort as well? but they?re not going away empty handed; we?ve got a great gift for ?em, and here?s what it is!?

Dee reads the prize:
?It?s a savings bond from Hush Puppies! Every contestant will receive a pair of comfortable, stylish shoes that fit every foot. Hush Puppies?we invented casual.?

The screen wipes to reveal Kirk with his hands on the two remaining teams? shoulders. ?These two teams are going to be playing for the rights to enter Olmec?s temple? And they?re gonna do it, right after this!? The camera flies in a 360-degree circle, before it stops at an aerial of the area around Olmec and fades out.

The title card splits and disappears, then the camera zooms out to reveal what it was focused on?a lamp-like light glowing in a mess of tropical plants.

?Welcome back to Legends,? says Kirk, standing  in front of The Jungle Crevice with the two remaining teams. ?Now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest?so before we get started, let?s hear it for Peter and Shannon of the Silver Snakes? and Amanda and Bryson of the Red Jaguars! The audience claps and cheers, and Kirk dismisses the two teams.

?Let?s get this started?boys, you can go over there? And girls can go set up for their temple game as well?? The players walk off in different directions as Kirk continues his narration.

?In the temple games, teams are competing for pendants of life?? Kirk grabs a pendant out of his pouch and holds it up to the camera. ?The winning team will need those pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded temple guards, as they make their way through the temple. There are three temple games, and Olmec will tell us about Temple Game #1.?

Olmec explains:
?Traditionally, Viking helmets only had two horns on them. However, you?re going to be creating a much larger helmet which will need four horns instead. When Kirk gives the signal, run out on the path and?without being hit by the boulder?grab a horn, then run back and stick it on the helmet. But be careful: if you are hit, you must return to the start and make the trip again! The first team to collect all four horns, or the team that?s further along at the end of 60 seconds? wins.?

?Sharp horns, giant swinging boulders? It?s a tough life being Erik the Red, I guess,? comments Kirk. ?Let?s put 60 seconds on the clock!?

The clock bangs down into the corner of the screen. ?On your marks, get set?GO!? Shannon and Amanda head out along the path? but Shannon is hit immediately while trying to dive under the boulder. Amanda manages to stick the first horn onto the helmet, but Shannon scrambles to catch up furiously. ?Both teams are working fast and furious,? narrates Kirk from the sidelines, ?but it looks like? The Red Jaguars might be slightly ahead?OH, they got hit!? [0:37] Now Shannon catches up, and takes a small lead, sticking her third horn on five seconds before Amanda can. [0:15] ?It might come down to the wire, now!? says Kirk. Both girls eventually get hit at around the same time, but the ceiling lights flash and the clock explodes before they can come back?we?re OUT OF TIME!

?Come back, come back?? says Kirk, running over to the giant helmets and into view of the camera. ?Let?s check it out,? he says, pulling horns off the helmets. ?The Red Jaguars got one? two? three horns, and the Silver Snakes got? one? two? THREE horns! It?s a tie?they each get the half pendant of life!? The audience cheers briefly before Kirk continues. ?The next game is also worth a half a pendant?Olmec, tell us about it.

Olmec narrates:
?Most ships are fitted with cannons, and Viking ships were certainly no exception. When Kirk gives the signal, grab some cannonballs and load up your cannon through the tube at the top. Then, pull the lever and fire at your opponent. If you hit him, the ball will stick to his clothes. But if you run out of cannonballs, you?ll have to go out to the battlefield and try again. The player with the least balls stuck to their clothes at the end of 60 seconds wins.?

?I?m going to get outta here ?cause I don?t wanna get hit!? says Kirk as he runs off-screen. ?Let?s put 60 seconds on the clock!?

The clock slams down in the corner of the screen. ?On your marks, get set?GO!? Both boys run out and grab a handful of plastic balls, slide them into the tube, then begin firing. After both cannons are empty, no balls hit anyone. [0:41] ?Now they have to go back out there and reload,? explains Kirk. Finally, Peter fires a perfect shot and hits Bryson in the upper stomach, but runs out of ammo and has to dodge the Red Jaguars? shots. ?Oh, it?s gonna be close!? says Kirk excitedly as the audience starts to count down. ?Oh no, Peter?s out of cannonballs?nice hit by the Red Jaguars! And? time?s up!? He runs over to the ball pit and calls over the players.

?There we go,? says Kirk, plucking the balls off the players? Velcro shirts. ?Both teams got one ball?both teams get another half-pendant of life! It?s one apiece, and we?re going into the third and final game?Olmec, tell us about it.?

Olmec continues:
?When Erik the Red stole the shovel back, he obviously had to be discreet in his operation. You are about to steal some shovels back for Erik yourselves, but this time with a more sophisticated method. When Kirk gives the signal, grab a shovel and lie down on the wet footpath. Grab the rope, and then your partner will pull you to the other side, where you must place the shovel in the bucket. Then it?ll be your partner?s turn to run back, retrieve a shovel and get pulled across. The team with the most shovels in their bucket at the end of 60 seconds wins.?

?This is one temple game you should not attempt at home,? advises Kirk. ?Let?s put? 60 seconds, on the clock!?

The clock appears onscreen. ?On your marks, get set?GO!? Amanda pulls Bryson along the footpath with a good rhythm, but the Silver Snakes seem to have trouble sliding along their path. ?This game takes a lot of teamwork and communication,? says Kirk, as the teams get their first shovels in at about the same time. [0:43] ?They?re pretty much neck-and-neck now, as they were before. These are two tough teams that are not gonna give up!? Both teams get their second shovels in, making it a tie game still. Only 19 seconds remain when the teams?once again, almost dead even?get their third shovels in the bin, and the competition does not continue even the slightest one-sided. ?It?s going to come down to the last few seconds, again,? comments Kirk. ?Three? two? one? TIME?S UP! Come on over here??

The players and Kirk move over to the bins at the end of the footpath. ?Let?s have a look here,? says Kirk, beginning on the Silver bucket. ?The Silver Snakes got?one? two? three? four shovels, and the Red Jaguars got?one? two? three? FOUR shovels!? The audience cheers loudly.

?That means that they each get the full pendant? They each have two pendants?this has never happened before, but we?re going on to a two-pendant tiebreaker!?  The theme music plays as the spotters roll out the gongs and the teams take their places.

?Alright, here are your tiebreaker rules,? says Kirk. ?In a minute, Olmec?s going to ask you a question, and if you think you know the answer, hit the gong in front of you. You?ll have three seconds to answer and I must accept your first response. If you?re right, you and your partner will be going to the Temple in search of The Stolen Shovel of Erik the Red, but if you?re wrong or you run out of time, I'm gonna give the other teams a chance. All clear??

The players nod in response. ?Alright, Olmec? we?re ready for your final question.?

Olmec asks: ?Which of these Vikings was killed by an arrow?William the Conqueror, Cnut the Great, or Rurik??

Following a brief silence, Amanda presses the gong: ?William the Conqueror.?

?That? is? CORRECT!? announces Olmec. ?The Red Jaguars are going to the temple!? yells Kirk. ?Oh, my! What a great team all the way? brought it down to the Tiebreaker! The Silver Snakes were awesome too?never before have I seen a two-pendant tiebreaker, and we?re not sending them home empty handed. Hey, why don?t we see what great gift they get??

Dee reads the prize:

?This is a tough team,? says Kirk, ?but let?s see if they?re tough enough to retrieve the Stolen Shovel of Erik the Red? right after this!? A quick?and shaky?panorama of the temple is shown, before stopping at Olmec, rapidly zooming in on the planter below him, before the title card appears and the screen fades to blank.

The camera zooms out from its previous spot, turns to a tropical bird on to the left of the temple steps, then fades to Kirk with his hands on the Red Jaguars? shoulders.

?Welcome back to Legends,? he says. ?Amanda and Bryson have proven themselves worthy and now have earned the right to enter Olmec?s temple. But first, Olmec?s going to give them some information to help them retrieve The Stolen Shovel of Erik the Red.?

Olmec begins his rundown:
?You could start by climbing through the Tigers' Den and climbing down into the Jungle Crevice. Crawl through the pit, then race into the Treasury of the Monkeys. Find the right bunch of bananas, and you could choose to go up into the Anaconda's Sanctuary, or into the Grand Marsh. Open the crocodiles? mouths to find the tongue, and you might have a chance to enter The Forest? of a Thousand Dragons. Reach into the dragon?s mouths and find the key?but be careful: one of the dragons might be inhabited by the spirit of a Temple Guard! If they grab you, you?ll have to give up a Pendant of Life. Next, plow through the wall and into the Lion Cage.

?There, ride the elevator up, and into the Catfish Cove. Find the correct bucket, and open the door to the Shriiiiine?of the Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue, and you may be headed for the Vine Drop?where you can grab the Stolen Shovel of Erik the Red. Pull the vines to open the doors, and race up to the Wildebeests' Hideout. Turn the correct horn, and swing on the vine across the Jungle Crevice. Then, pass thru the Room of the Tropicana Birds, race down the stairs, and back through the temple gates. The choices are yours and yours alone. You won two pendants in the temple games. Who's going first??

?Me,? volunteers Amanda.

?Very well, Amanda!? replies Olmec. ?When Kirk gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the temple, and make your way towards the Stolen Shovel. Hidden inside the temple are temple guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your pendant for an extra life and go on but if you're caught without a pendant, you'll be taken out of the temple...and it will be Bryson's turn to enter and try his luck. If you can reach the Stolen Shovel, all the doors of the temple will instantly unlock and the temple guards will vanish. Return through the gates with The Stolen Shovel in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded?and here's how!?

The clock slams down in the corner of the screen. ?Olmec, lower your gate!? The gate lowers as Olmec moans and the lights around him switch off. ?On your marks, get set?GO!?

Amanda begins jogging up the steps on Kirk?s final words, then chooses to take the way up to The Room of the Tropicana Birds. ?Now she?s got to press the beaks, and maybe open a door,? explains Kirk. ?Which one will open?? She presses two beaks, and in turn opens up both exits, but chooses the door to the Jungle Crevice. ?She?s going down to the top of the Jungle Crevice,? says Kirk. ?Now she?ll have to grab that rope? no, she?s going down!? comments Kirk. [2:38] Amanda opens the door to the Treasury of the Monkeys and heads down into the misty room, but before she can make any further movements, out of nowhere comes a?

?TEMPLE GUARD!? shouts Kirk. ?But she?s got a pendant, and plenty of time, and she can move right on up the ladder. She has to grab the bananas and place them on the table and see which one will work.? Amanda grabs two bunches, then decides to come back down and place them. ?One? two? the door opens!? says Kirk, as a monkey?s laugh interrupts him and the lights switch off except the glowing altar. ?She?s going? up into the Anaconda Room!? [2:19] Amanda reappears at the door of the Anaconda?s Sanctuary a few seconds later, but then a second temple guard jumps out and ends her leg of the temple run with 2:07 remaining.

?Oh no, another temple guard!? yells Kirk as the camera switches back to him and shows Bryson running up the stairs. ?Now it?s time for Bryson to take over? Into the Tropicana Birds, and across to the Jungle Crevice.? [1:59] Bryson grabs the vine and swings across, then hits the actuator to the Anaconda?s Sanctuary and enters it. ?Now he?s got to put together the Anaconda?s Sanctuary,? commentates Kirk. ?And this might take awhile?but he seems to be doing alright; in goes the first snake.? A few seconds of no activity later, Bryson tries the other hole?nothing. Climbing down to the Treasury of the Monkeys, he looks around for a few seconds before disappearing into the darkness. [1:26] Bryson rematerializes in the swampy setting of the Grand Marsh. ?Now he?s just under the Stolen Shovel!? says Kirk. ?Is he going to go up from there? I dunno, but we?ll find out??

[1:19] Bryson lifts the rubberized mouth of the stage-left alligator and reaches inside?no pull-able tongue. He then wades to crocodile and pries its mouth open. Out uncoils a small pink tongue, which after being tugged, a rumbling noise sounds?the door to the Forest of a Thousand Dragons opens. [1:05] He reaches up and grabs the top of the doorway to pull him through the hole, but looks lost once he enters the mess of plants and dragon heads. ?He?s now got to look inside for a key,? narrates Kirk. ?Inside one of those dragons? Oh, I hope none of them might be a temple spir?AH, it got him early!? Bryson is captured by the stumpy hands of the red dragon, but hands over a pendant of life and continues searching for the key. [0:38] ?Might wanna bust through that wall,? advises Kirk. After searching four mouths thoroughly with no luck, Bryson finally decides to break down the wall with his shoulder, then begins climbing the ladder to enter the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. He opens the door with a hit of a button, then pulls himself up and grabs the middle immediately, turning around to retrieve it from the shelf. [0:22] Realizing he has the wrong piece, he replaces it and goes to the opposite shelf to get the base, and places it on the pedestal. But just as Bryson gets the middle on correctly? we?re OUT OF TIME!

?Time ran out!? says Kirk, and the audience groans briefly. ?This was a great team all the way? They were amazing in the Temple Games, but the Temple?s just a toughie. They were just one room away too? Ah well, they still get the World Book, and we?ve got to get outta here?but check us out next time for more adventure and another great Legend of the Hidden Jungle. The credits scroll as various ending scenes are shown: detailed shots of the insides of the Vine Drop, the Anaconda?s Sanctuary and the Jungle Crevice with all the doors open. Finally, the camera fades out, and the light bulb-Nickelodeon logo is shown as an electric buzzing noise is heard.

Summary:

The episode started off on a good note with a Season One style Moat crossing (the crossing involved more than one objective) which was quite creative in my opinion. The only thing I'd complain about is that when those slides are wet from Moat water, it looks like they're really gonna put a hundred splinters in your butt while sliding down. Now for the best part of the episode IMO: the Temple Games. Temple Game #1 involved the giant swinging boulder and players collecting horns for a giant Viking helmet. Shannon just nearly missed pulling a "Tussuad Jennifer" here, but just barely - she had to dive under (and still got hit) but if she had just been a few inches higher up in flight, she might have been badly injured. A tie game occurred. The second temple game, a la Gladiators 2000, had contestants load up cannons with ball-pit balls and fire at their Velcro-covered opponents. Yet another tie occurred, leading the match to be extremely exciting. To finish off, the teams worked together to pull their partners survival rope-throw style along a slippery footpath while collecting the shovels of Erik the Red. And you guessed it... a third tie made the very first two-pendant tiebreaker in Legends history.

The temple run, sadly to say, was not very good and shows that one wrong turn can cost you a prize and possibly a victory. Amanda made the mistake of going up to the Anaconda's Sanctuary and enticing Bryson to take a "shortcut" which was not to be. After encountering a dead-end, he proceeded along the bottom floor, meeting the third guard disguised as a dragon in the Forest of a Thousand Dragons - but spends a ton of time finding the key. Once he finally busts through the wall, he takes the ladder to save time, but it still expires when he's only halfway done completing the monkey. This was wasted potential and hard luck, to sum up.

Trivia and Records
This was, of course, the very first two-pendant tiebreaker in Legends history. This is also, I believe, the only time where Kirk "foggs-up" the title of the show altogether.

I actually laughed when I was reading the legend, though.  Maybe part of it was I was imagining a scene in a Christmas movie in place of young Vikings. XD;; Either way, it was a nice job.
