Legends: The Rediscovery
« on: December 16, 2006, 04:34:06 PM »
Just a few things to explain about The Rediscovery.  From the beginning, I was planning to make an independent fanfic series, rather than just a few episodes to contibute to the Season 4 or Season 5 fics I read when I was first ghosting the forum.  The Rediscovery basically remains the same as the original show, but there are a few subtle differences:

1. I'm not sure if this ever happened in the real show, but if there's friends or close relatives that are a boy and a girl and they audition together, they can choose to go on the same team or different teams on different episodes.
2. All the players’ first names are revealed at the beginning of each episode— their names appear in onscreen and Kirk reads their names as he introduces the teams.
3. Both players on each team are given with a microphone so they can answer at the Steps of Knowledge (in the actual show, only one player per team had a microphone).
4. The Temple Games, if timed, don't always last for 60 seconds— depending on the challenge, they might last for 30, 45, 60, or 90 seconds.
5. In Season 1 only, if one team gets the tiebreaker question wrong, the other automatically wins.
6. There will always be an opportunity to form two full Pendants of Life in each Temple Run— if a team only wins one Pendant in the Temple Games, two half Pendants are hidden in Olmec’s Temple for the second runner to pick up.
7. The third room from the left on the lower floor of the Temple contains three ventilation shafts that run between there and other rooms of the Temple.  A player may slide down to the third-bottom room if he finds one of these shafts and it’s unlocked, but may not enter a shaft from the third-bottom room to go the other way.
Finally, in the first two seasons, the price of each prize package is announced after Dee explains the vacation package, to emphasize the fact that the prizes aren't as crappy now— the episodes I've finished already which feature a team who records a victory give the winning team about 11 or 12 grand in prizes.

The episode guide for all three seasons is below.  Some of the Season 1 episodes share their names with historic figures that were written about in the real show, but that's because I wasn't fully aware of those episodes at the time— I stumbled across this forum before any of the websites which featured a full episode guide.  I've tried to replace the episodes which share their historic figures and/or artifacts with episodes used or planned for use by other writers as best as I could, but I apologize in advance if there are any near-duplicates in the future.

Episode Guide

Here's something about the way The Rediscovery is made.  The format is slightly different from the original show in terms of production. (If anyone watches Lingo on GSN, I've based the production format on that.) The first season is only 20 episodes long, but subsequent seasons consist of a whopping 65 episodes apiece.

Each season after the first consists of 60 regular episodes and then a five-episode Tournament of Champions, and has a sort of environment-related central theme.  Season 2 is the "Winter Season," which is reflected in the "frozen" plants and slightly chilled temperatures on the set.  The Moat is even solid ice for many of the crossings, and many of the Temple rooms are designed to resemble icy regions or at least have relevant objectives.  Olmec is also lit with blue lights in this season rather than the usual red-orange.

Season 3 is the "Tropical Season." The set is lit with more yellow and orange lighting to simulate a jungle during the day rather than at night, and Olmec is lit only by a faint orange light.  As for small changes to the show formula, five episodes are now taped each day, the Temple Run prize values are no longer stated, and the Temple Games feature something new: Pendants of Life in the team colors will appear onscreen during the second and third games to help viewers keep track of teams' scores.

if a team only wins one Pendant in the Temple Games, two Half-Pendants are randomly placed within Olmec?s Temple.
Why not just hide them a full pendant instead of 2 seperate half pendants? It would be easier to spot and easier on the frontrunner because he or she would have less signaling to do. Overall, it doesn't seem that bad of an idea...its really pretty clever.

Yeah I suppose, but I already made one where the second runner finds both halves of her Pendant.  Can't change it now.

The prizes aren't too crappy now? the episodes I've finished already which feature a team who records a victory gives the winning team at least 14 grand in prizes.

Unfortunately it's $14,000 worth of Quik.

Good work so far, man.  I'm really impressed with all the detail (all contestants' names, etc.) that you put into these episodes.

Thanks.  I meant to make other changes too, but I thought no that's gonna be unfair, but still I think there's just enough difference to make it look like a shiny new version.

Not meaning to double post here, but I want to give you guys the layouts I'm using.  I'm sorry if there's any rooms that share their names with the ones you made up.  Once I put the objectives of each room in, just let me know if the objectives match too and i'll see what I can do to fix it.

All layouts' rooms are given in a counter-clockwise order.  I've also boldfaced any room changes to make it easier to read.

Season 1

Layout I
The Crypt
The Great Chasm— This is actually just like the Pit.  The players can just swing across the gap or jump right down.
The King's Storeroom— In the same place as in Season 3 of the original show.
The Chamber of the Sacred Markers
The Room of the Ancient Warriors (1)— The big difference is that the Temple Guards don't hide behind the armor.
The Shrine of the Silver Monkey
The Room of the Secret Password
The Pharaoh's Secret Passage
The Quicksand Bog
The Dark Forest— The trees don't have arms in this version, so this room can't hide a Temple Guard.  Also the green lights've been moved back to the Junction of the Secret Shafts.
The Junction of the Secret Shafts— It's kinda like a Heart Room idea but in place of the Swamp area, and it's green.  If you're coming in from one of the old vents, you can race up a ramp and hit an actuator on a door to go left or right.  There's a raised area near the doors on both sides, and also around the Temple Guard door in the back of the room. (That's right, I installed a Temple Guard door.)
The Tomb of the Headless Kings— I've made this room a little easier too.  There's no ropes or vines, but there's an altar in the front of the room on which the skull is placed.
The Ledges

Layout II
The Vault— There's a big safe covering the Temple Guard door, and you just need to grab one of the six handles of the safe wheel to open doors.
The Great Chasm
The King's Storeroom
The Chamber of the Sacred Markers
The Room of the Ancient Warriors (1)
The Shrine of the Silver Monkey
The Room of the Secret Password
The Pharaoh's Secret Passage
The Quicksand Bog
The Dungeon of the Lone Column— The room has a brown color to it, to paint a picture.  There's a big stone pillar in the middle of the room (alittle bigger than Pit of the Pendulum-size,) and it has a hole in it.  You can reach in to grab the key, or maybe just knocking over the column will open the doors.  You never know.
The Junction of the Secret Shafts
The Tomb of the Headless Kings
The Ledges

Layout III
The Vault
The Great Chasm
The King's Storeroom
The Burial Pit— I moved the magnetic key stuff here, and the room keeps the Chamber of the Sacred Markers wallpaper.  The idea's like a mix of the Treasure Room and the Tomb of the Ancient Kings— you can open the sarcophagus and climb down through it, or use the key inside it on a door.
The Room of the Ancient Warriors (2)— The suits of armor now have a pair of gauntlets attached to each of them.  A Temple Guard could grab the player by sticking his hands in them— though Kirk and Olmec make it look like the armor's possessed by a Temple Spirit.
The Shrine of the Silver Monkey
The Room of the Secret Password
The Pharaoh's Secret Passage
The Quicksand Bog
The Chamber of Four Columns— It looks like the Dungeon of the Lone Column except with four Pit of the Pendulum-type columns arranged in a square.  The player just has to knock down all four to open one of the golden doors.
The Junction of the Secret Shafts
The Throne Room— The sweet wall-spinnin' throne like in the Season 2 of the original show.
The Ledges

Layout IV
The Vault
The Great Chasm
The King's Storeroom
The Burial Pit
The Room of the Ancient Warriors (2)
The Shrine of the Silver Monkey
The Room of the Secret Password
The Pharaoh's Secret Passage
The Quicksand Bog
The Switch Inferno— You'll love to see contestants fail miserably at this one.  I've placed somewhere between 20 and 30 actuators all throughout the room, but only one— if any at all— open the golden doors.
The Junction of the Secret Shafts
The Throne Room
The Ledges

Season 2 layouts coming soon

Here's the rest of the layouts. Again, I'm sorry if there's any rooms that share their names with the ones you made up. Just let me know if the objectives match too and i'll see what I can do to fix it.

All layouts' rooms are given in a counter-clockwise order. I've also boldfaced any room changes to make it easier to read.

Season 2

Layout V
The Room of Temple Gongs— Not to be confused with the Room of the Royal Gongs from the actual show.  There's a set of six gongs in the front of the room resembling those at the end of the Moat, and similarly each one's a different color.  You just need to hit the gong that matches your team's color to open the door.
The Great Chasm
The Laser Light Room— A metal column lies in the middle of the room, and there are four rotatable pieces in the column and a dome on top.  Each movable piece has a slightly lighter gray section— it's actually a dimmed light behind a piece of glass.  If a movable piece is in the right position, the light in that section brightens.  And once all four pieces are in the right place, the dome fills with light and the doors open. (Put simply: "Find the right combination to unleash the power of the laser.")
The Burial Pit— Same objective as Season 1, new wallpaper for the center room.  The walls are now a copper brown, with a mystical black pattern on them (more on that later.)
The Knights' Barracks— I haven't taken out anything from the Room of the Ancient Warriors except for the levers in the suits of armor.  There's a sheath jammed into the head of each suit of armor, and a sword in the front of the room.  The sword will fit into any one of the three sheaths, but only one sheath will open the door.  The armor can still be possessed.
The Shrine of the Silver Monkey
The Dark Overlook— A tricky one, sure, but a favorite of mine.  It's like taking the Room of Three Torches, blowing out all the lights, and now you have to correctly place all three torches.  Alson the tip of a torch is made of a cylindrical piece of glass containing a lightbulb.  Once a torch is in the correct pedestal, the tip of it will light up.  Correctly placing all three torches will open the door.
The Pharaoh's Secret Passage
The Dungeon— Just like in the real show except for having to use the Pharaoh's Secret Passage to ascend into the room above.
The Switch Inferno— Just like in Season 1, Layout IV.  I've placed 24 actuators all throughout the room (8 per wall), but only one— if any at all— opens the golden doors.
The Junction of the Secret Shafts
The Forbidden Fountain— Well, they put back the altar that was in the Tomb of the Headless Kings, but now there's an aged scales in the room as well.  On the altar are four bowls similar to the one stuck on one side of the scales.  The player needs to place a bowl on the other end of the scales, and if they pick right, the scales tip in the other direction to indicate that the doors are open.
The Crevasse— The Ledges re-painted a light blue.

Layout VI
The Room of Temple Gongs
The Bridge (Not a typo, it's just not called The Troubled Bridge.)
The Laser Light Room
The Dragon's Lair— They hung a big dragon mouth around the door leading up into the Laser Light Room, and leaned four horns on the railing in the front of the room.  Once all four are correctly placed, the mystical pattern on the walls will glow a bright violet and the doors will open.
The Knights' Barracks
The Shrine of the Silver Monkey
The Dark Overlook
The Pharaoh's Secret Passage
The Dungeon
The Switch Inferno
The Junction of the Secret Shafts
The Crystal Cave— It looks like there was more light blue paint left over for when they made the Crevasse.  The room also looks like it's made of ice and frozen rock, complete with three long stalactites.  The stalactites can be detached from the ceiling, and once the correct one is pulled down the doors will open.
The Mine Shaft— It's actually exactly like the Rock Quarry except for one detail: The number of rocks you need to throw in the bucket keeps changing.
The Crevasse

Layout VII
The Room of Temple Gongs
The Bridge
The Laser Light Room
The Dragon's Lair
The Knights' Barracks
The Shrine of the Silver Monkey
The Planetarium—  This room contains a astronomic model which consists of four colorful spheres and orbital rings.  The player needs to spin the sphere to open the doors leading into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey or the Abandoned Cave.
The Abandoned Cave— The Pharaoh's Secret Passage has been boarded up to add to the look of this room.  There's alot of huge rocks and rubble lying around, and the player just needs to make it to the ladder leading upward into the Planetarium. (The producers cut a door out of the floor of the top corner room before they began filming the first episodes of Season 2.)
The Switch Inferno— The objective is a lot easier now, since there are only 12 actuators rather than 24 like before.
The Junction of the Secret Shafts
The Crystal Cave
The Mine Shaft
The Crevasse

Layout VIII
The Arctic Antechamber— Three "doorways" containing ice walls (kinda like the rock wall in the Switch Inferno, only thinner and light blue) are located in this room.  The player needs to run through the correct ice wall to advance in the Temple.
The Bridge
The Laser Light Room
The Dragon's Lair
The Knights' Barracks
The Shrine of the Silver Monkey
The Geographer's Study—  A bookshelf is located in the back of the room; there are a lot of atlases and encyclopedias, but only three— the largest atlases, each marked "ACTUATOR" on their spine— can open the door.  The player will need to pull the correct book off the shelf to open the door, but there might be a Temple Guard hiding on the other side of the bookshelf.
The Pharaoh's Secret Passage
The Dungeon— Nothing is different from the room with the same name in Layouts V and VI. (The door directly connecting the upper and lower corner rooms has been made inactive again, too.)
The Switch Inferno
The Junction of the Secret Shafts
The Crystal Cave
The Mine Shaft
The Crevasse

Layout IX
The Arctic Antechamber
The Great Chasm
The Laser Light Room
The Cathedral— A fake stained-glass window is in the center of the room, but a few pieces of the window are missing.  The missing sections are located in the front of the room, and the player must correctly place them all.  Once the window is complete, the mystical pattern on the walls will glow an eerie violet and the doors will open.
The Knights' Barracks
The Shrine of the Silver Monkey
The Geographer's Study
The Pharaoh's Secret Passage
The Dungeon
The Switch Inferno
The Junction of the Secret Shafts
The Crystal Cave
The Crevasse

Layout X (Tournament of Champions Layout)
The Arctic Antechamber
The Great Chasm
The Laser Light Room
The Cathedral
The Knights' Barracks
The Shrine of the Silver Monkey
The Geographer's Study
The Pharaoh's Secret Passage
The Dungeon
The Switch Inferno
The Labyrinth— A bunch of new walls have been placed in the room (which looks like this from above), so the Junction of the Secret Shafts is actually a bit of a challenge.
The Lost Treasury— The altar is no longer covered in the fake ice and frozen rock, and no more icicles on the ceiling.  But there is a big treasure box right behind the ladder in the room, containing four of the artifacts previous teams failed to reach (specifically: the Missing Log Book of Tenzing Norgay, Helen of Troy's Mystical Mirror, the Stolen Crown of the False Dmitriy and the Melted Lamp of Paul Revere.) The player must place the correct one on the pedestal on the altar to open any doors.
The Crevasse

———————————————————————————————————————
EDIT 12/06/10: For convenience, the Season 3 layouts as well:

Season 3

Layout XI
The Room of the Ancient Masks— And so, the top entrance room returns to a typical upper-left room set up.  It's not much different from the Room of the Three Gargoyles.
The Pit of Despair— Despite being called the "Pit of Despair," this room doesn't quite resemble any of the other rooms by that name.  It's a bit more like the Pit of the Pendulum with thin side ledges on the left and right walls, but two catwalks connect the side ledges of the room.
The Observatory— A shout-out goes to TBK for this room, partly inspired by his Lookout Tower.  A telescope just in front of the ladder in the room has to be used to read writing off of the far wall above the audience, but the writing is actually a simple command that has to be followed rather than shouted out.  At the front of the room are two altars, each with three celestial models on top (on the left, Mercury, Venus and the Sun; on the right, the Moon, Saturn and Jupiter), and the objective involves these in some way.
The Central Dock— Two masts and a crow's nest are located around the room and must be placed in the ship just in front of the ladder leading downwards (it doesn't matter which mast the crow's nest rests on).
The Den of Totem Poles— Think the "stone column" Observatory from Season 2 of the original show, only doubled.  Two totem poles with three faces each are positioned on either side of the ladder leading downwards, and all six faces need to be turned toward the audience.
The Shrine of the Silver Monkey
The Pirate's Cove
The Graveyard of Ships— Two graves are positioned in the back of the room where the Temple Guard door would usually be.  In order to enter the Pirate's Cove or Shrine of the Silver Monkey, players have to step on the actuator in the correct grave... at the risk of being grabbed by a Temple Guard-possessed pirate buried in one of the graves.
The Viper's Nest— Almost the same as in the original show, but the third snake jar now hides a key rather than a snake that has to be pulled out.
The Bamboo Forest— Same as the original show, only with the "secret passages" concept added in.
The Lost Treasury— It should be noted that while most of the set has switched to much brighter lighting reminiscent of the original show's opening season, this particular room space in the temple remains very dim to create an atmosphere that matches many of the rooms in this space for Season 3.

The Cannon Room— The dimmed lighting in this room area throughout the season comes in handy for rooms like this, which requires players to look around for three cannonballs needed to fill the cannon located in the front of the room.
The Cave

Layout XIII (Hawaiian Layout)
The Room of the Ancient Masks
The Coconut Harvest/The Upper Terrace— The Upper Terrace is essentially the same as the catwalk portion of the Pit of Despair, only with added guardrails around the catwalks and side ledges so that a player entering from the Room of the Ancient Masks can only choose the two upper doors and a player coming from the Cave can only choose the bottom one.  Throughout the Coconut Harvest portion of the room are different palm trees with a total of ten coconuts hidden in them— the player need only find five to place in a bucket, but obtaining them may require anything from pulling on vines to searching foliage to climbing the walls to reach the coconuts in the trees.
The Observatory
The Central Reef— This room contains two puzzles.  To go on, a player may need to either pull five fish from a small tank and hook them to the side walls, or solve a three-dimensional coral puzzle surrounding the ladder leading downward.  Square-rings of coral surround the ladder, and the six layers are each covered in protrusions and indents akin to "teeth." If properly turned, all the layers will fit into each other— accomplishing this counts as completing the objective, but only one of the two objectives is the correct one.
The Tiki Village— Two rather large tiki idols are located on either side of the ladder in place of the totem poles, and raised grooves surround them, creating a path.  This path leads to a floor actuator in the back of the room, a distance behind the ladder, and the player needs to push the correct idol on top of the actuator to weigh it down and open any doors.

The Tropical Treasure Trove— Seeing a huge makeover from earlier layouts, this room is now three walls full of plant life and numerous hiding spaces.  Plenty of fruits can be found, but also a large ruby, sapphire and pearl.  Each of these gems fits on only one of the three pedestals scattered around the room, and the correct gem must be placed on its proper pedestal in order for any doors to open.

The Temple Bestiary— Toucans and golden monkeys and crocodiles, oh my! One of each of these animals is located in a cage in this room, but they are not properly arranged.  Players need to rearrange the animals so that each is in its correct cage (five possible combinations, as the default is incorrect) to open a door.
The Cave

Layout XVII (Tournament of Champions II Layout)
The Room of the Ancient Masks
Fragile Falls— This is where the fog machines come in, despite the brighter lighting.  The fog machine in the back of the room, turned on high, resembles a powerful waterfall, which is emphasized by the use of blue and green balls rather than the typical foam blocks in the pit below.  Numerous fallen timbers also litter the bottom portion of the room, and in place of the catwalks are a couple random vines hanging from the ceiling and a rickety bridge which includes multiple breakaway planks.  A player may switch floors in this room.
The Observatory
Medusa's Lair— Players will have to place four snakes rather than two in this brief reappearance of the room.

Trivia
?   Only one player so far has used one of the Secret Shafts? Tiffany, the second runner in ?The Silver Angel Wing of Elizabeth I? (Season 1, Layout I).
?   All three Season 1 teams caught by three Temple Guards took 1? Pendants to Olmec?s Temple.
?   Both Season 1 teams that tied for 1 Pendant in the Temple Games successfully retrieved.their respective artifacts from the Temple.
?   All the Red Jaguar teams that made it to the Temple in Season 1 won 1? Pendants in the Temple Games.
?   The average team took 2 Pendants to the Temple.
?   So far the Green Monkeys are the only team that has not successfully brought an artifact out of the Temple.
?   The only episode so far to feature a four-way tie on the second-to-last Step of Knowledge is "The Holy Ankh of the Egyptian Deity" (Layout III).
?   Rooms that only contained one artifact include the Dungeon of the Lone Column, the Chamber of the Sacred Markers, the Tomb of the Headless Kings, the Burial Pit and the Chamber of Four Columns.  No artifacts were ever hidden in the Dark Forest.
?   Rooms in which a Temple Guard was never encountered include the Dungeon of the Lone Column and the Chamber of Four Columns. (The Dark Forest never hid a Temple Guard, either, but it could not contain one.)
?   The fastest victory to date is "Spear of the Nine Samurai" (Layout II).  Silver Snake Hiromi got all the way to the Room of the Ancient Warriors to grab the Spear, and then made it out with 0:51 left.
?   The quickest capture by three Temple Guards occurred in "The Lost Papyrus Scroll of the Poet Sage" (Layout I).  The second runner Tori met the third Guard in the Quicksand Bog with 0:58 left, and since she had only a half Pendant the game was over.
?   In "The Entrails-Stained Crown of William the Conqueror" (Layout II), you can see the Thorn Crown of Emperor Augustus in the Chamber of the Sacred Markers.
?   In Layout I, the only victories occurred in the two episodes where the artifact was located in the Junction of the Secret Shafts.
?   The frontrunner began in the Crypt in every Temple Run that contained it.
?   The fewest number of rooms entered in any Temple Run, as of today, is five.  This occurred in "The Sacred Quill of Quetzalcoatl" (Layout III), although this run contained a production error? the door from the Throne Room to the Junction of the Secret Shafts did not open until the last few seconds.
?   Only one player has ever entered all the rooms of a particular layout: Ryan, the second runner in "The Right Nostril of the Great Sphinx" (Layout III).  After grabbing the Nostril in the King's Storeroom, he descended into the Burial Pit, jumped down into the Great Chasm, entered the Ledges and then climbed up into the Vault to escape from the Temple and record the win with 5 seconds left.
?   The first solo Temple Run occurred in "The Feathered Headdress of Powhatan" (Layout II).  The Silver Snake, Tico, grabbed the Headdress in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey with 32 seconds left, but time ran out as he was leaving the Great Chasm.  The first solo victory, however, did not occur until "Henry the Navigator's Missing Maps" (Layout IV).
?   The closest failed acquisition of an artifact occurred in "Helen of Troy's Mystical Mirror" (Layout III).  The second runner Ray slid down the Pharaoh's Secret Passage into the Quicksand Bog with 2 seconds left, but could not grab the Mirror in time.
?   The only Temple Run where the three Temple Guards are in consecutive rooms is "The Jeweled Sword of Charlemagne" (Layout IV).
