Episode 15: Helen of Troy's Mystical Mirror

The camera maneuvers through a thick, lush rainforest to stop in front of an ancient temple. A giant stone head next to the gate of the temple begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE! With your guide, Kirk Fogg!"

On this final word, Kirk descends into view on a rope. "Thank you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple. The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple. Which legend are we gonna hear about today?"

Olmec replies:
"The legend of Helen of Troy's Mystical Mirror."

"Ah, Helen of Troy's Mystical Mirror!" Kirk says in response. "Well, the adventure is set, and one of these six teams will have the chance to retrieve Helen of Troy's Mirror. Will it be:
"Jason and Alita of the Red Jaguars—" the camera pans to each team in order—
"Ray and Lianna of the Blue Barracudas,
"Chris and Brooklynn of the Green Monkeys,
"Bryan and Ashley of the Orange Iguanas,
"Robert and Sherra of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Tim and Gaby of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple and retrieve the Mirror. First, they must cross the moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today:
"Each team has four wooden planks, and in front of them are the remains of an ancient bridge. When I say 'go,' they're gonna take the planks and lay them down in order to construct a bridge. You'll both crawl out onto the planks, and then the second player will grab the plank behind them and hand it up, move on up, and keep going like that until you're both at the other side of the Moat. If either one of you falls, you'll both have to go back and start over again.
"When both players get off the bridge on the other end of the Moat, run over and hit the gong." He slams down on the Red Jaguars' gong to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round, so teams— are you ready?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Olmec, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"It's party time!" Olmec shouts as an answer.
"Let's get started then," Kirk replies. "On your marks, get set, GO!"

The teams all take off at about the same pace, but soon the Red Jaguars have a nice lead over the other teams. The Green Monkeys and the Orange Iguanas begin to fall behind as the Red Jaguars get across and slam down on their gong.
Blue Barracudas are only a couple of seconds behind the Red Jaguars and finish second. Only a little while thereafter the girl on the Silver Snakes slips through the planks and falls into the Moat, the audience moaning since the Silver Snakes must start again. The Purple Parrots become the third team to cross the Moat, and the Green Monkeys barely beat out the Orange Iguanas for the fourth position.
"That's it! We've got our four teams right here!" announces Kirk. "Going on to the Steps of Knowledge are the Red Jaguars—" the camera slides to briefly view each qualifying team— "and the Blue Barracudas— and the Green Monkeys— and the Purple Parrots! Orange Iguanas and the Silver Snakes gave it a great effort too. They're not going away empty-handed, we've got a nice gift for them for playing and here's what it is." Bryan, Ashley, Tim and Gaby will each be receiving a copy of RV on DVD.

The four teams are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge accompanied by Kirk. "As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about Helen of Troy's Mystical Mirror.  Pay attention teams, cause your knowledge of the legend can bring you one step closer to Olmec's Temple."

Olmec begins to tell the story:
"The most graceful and beautiful woman in ancient Greece was named Helen.  All the men wanted to marry her and bribed her with cute gifts, but her father arranged her marriage to Menelaus, the king of Sparta.  However, the goddess of love Aphrodite one day said to Paris, the prince of Troy:
" 'I can give you the prettiest woman in the land.  Why not Timandra? Or Penelope? No, wait— I can give you Queen Helen!'
" 'Beautiful and a queen?' replied Paris. 'Bring me her! I want Helen!'
"And so Aphrodite sent her son Cupid to make Helen fall in love with Paris.  At the time she was in the royal bedroom combing her hair and looking in her enchanted hand mirror.  The mirror is what made Helen so gorgeous.  Cupid shot her with one of his arrows to cast the love spell on her.  Helen immediately dropped the mirror face-up and walked out of the palace, where Paris was waiting.
"Helen left with Paris to Troy and so is known today as Helen of Troy.  When Menelaus found his wife's mirror on the floor, he realized Paris had taken her declared war against Troy— the Trojan War— to win her back.  But Helen remained forever in love with Paris, and her mirror stayed unbroken but disappeared… until now.  Your quest is to retrieve the Mystical Mirror and bring it back here."

"Thanks Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes telling the story. "So tell us, where is the Mirror?"
Olmec replies:
"Helen of Troy's Mystical Mirror can be found… in the Quicksand Bog."

"Teams," Kirk begins, walking down the steps, "you are now standing on the Steps of Knowledge, and in a minute, Olmec will ask you a question about the legend.  If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're first, your step will light up, and you'll have three seconds to answer.  If you're right, you can move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, one of the other teams will get a chance to answer.  The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  All right Olmec, we're now ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
"Was Helen married off to the king of: Sparta—?"
Chris stomps down first: "Sparta…?"
"Correct," replies Olmec, and so the Green Monkeys get to move down one step.

Olmec now asks:
"What was the name of the man wanted to steal Helen from her husband: London, Paris, or Madrid?"
Alita rings in: "Paris."
"Correct," Olmec says, allowing the Red Jaguars to step down.

Olmec then asks:
"What Greek goddess promised to get Helen for Paris: Athena—?"
Brooklynn stomps down too early: "Athena…?"
"Incorrect," answers Olmec. "The other two choices are—"
Ray buzzes in: "Aphrodite."
"Correct," says Olmec, and so the Blue Barracudas can move down a step as well.
"This match is heating up," comments Kirk. "Next question, Olmec."

Olmec asks:
"According to our legend, which woman did Aphrodite promise to Paris: The most powerful in the world, The most beautif—?"
Brooklynn stomps down first: "Beauty…? I mean, the most beautiful…?"
"That is correct," replies Olmec, allowing the Green Monkeys to step down again.
"Green Monkeys are now only one step away from the next round," Kirk informs the audience. "We're looking for two teams.  Olmec, continue."

Olmec does so by asking:
"Helen was married to the king of Sparta.  What was his name: Menelaus—?"
Jason gongs in: "Menelaus…?"
"That is correct," says Olmec, and the Red Jaguars can go down to the second-to-last step.

Olmec asks:
"In our legend, Aphrodite sent her son Cupid to: Make Helen fall in love with Paris, Make Helen kill Paris, or Kidnap Helen?"
Jason buzzes in again: "Uhh… the first choice…?"
"I need a full answer," replies Olmec. "Incorrect."
Lianna stomps down: "Kidnap Helen…?"
"Incorrect," says Olmec. "It was: Make Helen fall in love with Paris."
"Okay, nobody scored there," Kirk comments. "Take it easy on them, Olmec! Next question."

Olmec then asks:
"What weapon does Cupid use to make people fall in love—?"
Ray buzzes in: "Arrows…?"
"That is correct," answers Olmec, allowing the Blue Barracudas to ring in again.
"It's a three-way tie on the second-to-last step!" Kirk announces to the audience. "Purple Parrots can still catch up.  Olmec, next question."

Olmec continues:
"When Helen was struck with one of Cupid's arrows, what did she immediately drop—?"
Ray stomps down first again: "Her mirror…?"
"That is correct!" Olmec shouts, allowing the Blue Barracudas to move down to the final level.
"We've got our first team going to the Temple Games!" announces Kirk. "Who will join them: The Red Jaguars, the Purple Parrots or the Green Monkeys? Next question."

Olmec asks:
"Paris kidnapped Helen and took her to Troy.  In what present-day country—?"
Sherra rings in early: "Turkey…?"
"Correct," says Olmec, allowing the Purple Parrots to move down one step.

Olmec then asks:
"In Greek mythology, who was the king of the gods and Helen of Troy's father—?"
Jason rings in: "Zeus."
"That is correct!" shouts Olmec, allowing the Red Jaguars to join the Blue Barracudas on the bottom step.
"That's it! We've got our two teams right here!" announces Kirk. "And they are the Red Jaguars and the Blue Barracudas! Green Monkeys and Purple Parrots gave it a great effort too.  They're not going away empty-handed, here's what we've got for them." Chris, Brooklynn, Robert and Sherra will each be receiving a $50 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Nike.

"Now," says Kirk, "the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, so let's get to know our two teams. On the Blue Barracudas, we have Ray. Now I understand you're totally into skateboarding. Tell me about that."
"I've been boarding for about six years now," says Ray, and my friends say I'm one of the best ones that hasn't gone to the X-Games."
"And your partner Lianna, I hear you're into gymnastics and dancing," Kirk says, reading the player profiles on an index card.
"Yeah, and, well, they really tie together," Lianna explains. "I mean, well, you need to be flexible to be able to dance good, and I wouldn't be that flexible if, well, if I didn't take gymnastics."
"I think we've got a good team here, but we're about to find out," says Kirk. "Let's hear it for the Blue Barracudas!" The audience applauds for a moment. "But on the Red Jaguars, we have Jason. And it says here you play a lot of soccer. Are you the goalie?"
"Sometimes," Jason replies. "I'm usually defense."
"And Alita, you wanna be a fashion designer or a writer," Kirk says. "You write any good stories yet?"
"Um, well I got one I don't have a name for but I'm almost done writing it," Alita replies. "We've got these three girls who're roommates at college and there's all these secrets they find out about each other as the school year goes on. I had my mom help me write it by telling me about when she was in college."
"I bet it'll be a bestseller," says Kirk. "Let's hear it for the Red Jaguars!" The audience applauds again.

"Why don't you go get ready for the Temple Games," Kirk says, "while I tell you guys what's gonna happen here. Now, in the Temple Games, these teams will be competing to win Pendants of Life. The winning team will need the Pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards when they go to Olmec's Temple. There are three Temple Games, and the first one is called The Dartboard of Love. Olmec, tell us about it."

Olmec begins:
"Cupid had to work on his aim for a long time before he could fire one of his magical arrows at the right person. In this Game you will also work on your aim. When Kirk gives the signal, put a cannonball between your legs and use the trapeze to head down the ramp and over the grid. Then release the cannonball and try to drop it into one of the holes on the grid. Then go back and do it again.
"The first player to place a cannonball in all nine holes of the grid— or the one with the most holes filled after 60 seconds— wins."
"Who's a hotshot and who's not?" Kirk says. "We're about to find out. Let's set the clock for 60 seconds. On your mark, get set, GO!"
Jason and Ray ride the trapezes over the grid but release their first cannonballs too early. They eventually get the timing right, but Ray ends up dropping four cannonballs into the same hole on the grid. They both release ten cannonballs before ceiling lights flash to indicate that time is up.
"Okay," says Kirk, running over to check out the scores. "Red Jaguars filled four holes, Blue Barracudas filled four holes. It's a tie— they both get the half Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds for a second. "The next game is also worth a half Pendant. Olmec, tell us about it."

Olmec continues:
"According to our legend, Aphrodite sent Cupid to fire a love arrow at Helen. Here you will do the same. When Kirk gives the signal, sail out to the island, plant the love arrow in the ground. Then turn around and sail back to the dock.
"The first player to plant the love arrow on the island and return with both feet the dock— or the one that's furthest along in 30 seconds— wins."
The camera fades to Kirk. "Let's put 30 seconds on the clock," he says. The clock then appears in the corner of the screen. "We got a tie, a half Pendant apiece. On your mark, get set, GO!"
Alita and Lianna sail out to the islands, and Alita plants the arrow only about a second before Lianna. Lianna also has trouble turning the boat around, allowing Alita to run back up the dock with only 4 seconds left.
"That's it!" announces Kirk. "Alita got back up the dock first. That gives the Red Jaguars the other half Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds for a moment. "So it's Blue Barracudas have a half Pendant, the Red Jaguars have a full Pendant, but this next game is worth a full Pendant. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3."

Olmec narrates:
"The Greeks fought Paris's army in the Trojan War to try and win Helen back. Here you must defeat Paris's army. When Kirk gives the signal, load your slingshot to knock over the target on your pedestal, then your partner will take aim. If the target is knocked down, your team gains 100 points, then the target is set back up again.
"The first team to score 1,000 points— or the team with the highest score after 90 seconds— wins."
"Whoever wins this goes to the Temple," Kirk says. "Let's put 90 seconds on the clock. Ready, aim, FIRE!"
Cannonballs fly virtually everywhere except at the targets. Almost all of the cannonballs fall out of the slingshots before being fired. The first target isn't knocked down until the last few seconds, and then the ceiling lights flash almost immediately thereafter.
"Well," says Kirk, running over to check out the spotters' scoreboards and declare the winner. "Red Jaguars didn't score, but Blue Barracudas got a hundred points. They get the full Pendant, that gives them a Pendant and a half, the Red Jaguars had one Pendant. The Blue Barracudas are goin' to the Temple!" Lianna hugs Ray for a second, then they high-five each other. "Red Jaguars gave it a gallant effort. They won't be going away empty-handed, we've got a great gift for them and here's what it is." Jason and Alita will each be receiving a copy of King Kong on DVD.

"Olmec!" calls Kirk. "Ray and Lianna have proven themselves worthy and earned the right to enter your Temple. But before they go, can you give them any hints to help them retrieve Helen of Troy's Mystical Mirror?"
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
"You could start by climbing through the Ledges and climbing down into the Great Chasm. Crawl through the chasm, then race into the Throne Room. Sit on the Throne of the Pretender to spin the wall, and you could choose to go up into the Burial Pit or into the Junction of the Secret Shafts. If you escape, you might have a chance to enter the Chamber of Four Columns. Knock over all the columns to go upstairs or plow through the wall and into the Quicksand Bog, where you can grab Helen of Troy's Mystical Mirror.
"Next, climb the Pharaoh's Secret Passage up into the Room of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the right password and shout it out to open the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room of the Ancient Warriors. Place yourself in the correct armor, but be careful— one of the suits of armor could be possessed by the spirit of a Temple Guard! If they grab you, you'll have to give up a Pendant of Life! Next, race up to the King's Storeroom, smash the clay pots to find the key, then swing on the rope across the Great Chasm. Then, pass through the Vault, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone." Olmec pauses for a second here. "You won 1½ Pendants in the Temple Games. Who's going first?"
"I am!" shouts Lianna eagerly.
"Very well, Lianna," replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "Good luck to both of you."

"All right then," Kirk says, beginning to explain the rules. "When I say 'go,' you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way towards the Mirror. Be careful— the Temple has many locked doors and dead ends, but there are three old shafts somewhere in the Temple. If you can find one and it's open, you can jump in and slide down to the Junction of the Secret Shafts. Also beware, because in the Temple there are also Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. If you enter one of those rooms, a Temple Guard will jump out and grab you. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple— and it'll be Ray's turn to enter and try his luck. Now, you have a Pendant and a half. Hidden somewhere inside the Temple is the other half of your Pendant. If you can find it and you're carrying the other half, you will get an extra life. If you can reach the Mirror, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the gates with Helen of Troy's Mystical Mirror in three minutes, and you'll be handsomely rewarded— and here's how!"
• For just making it into the Temple, Ray and Lianna will each receive an XBOX 360, along with two new games.
• If they can reach the Mystical Mirror in three minutes, they'll each win a Regent sports package.
• If they can get the Mystical Mirror out of the Temple before three minutes is up, they'll be cruising the Mediterranean!

"Well let's see if we can get them on that Big Red Boat!" Kirk says, excited. "Lianna, maybe you could tell us how you think you're gonna get to the Mirror."
"Well, um, we're just gonna go through the, well, the Safe Room up there, and well, go down to the Throne Room and across the floor to the, well, the corner room over there and… well, get the Mirror and come back out."
"We're about to see if that works out," Kirk says. "Mouthpieces in. Let's lower the gate, Olmec!"
Olmec moans as he lowers the gate.
"And let's set the clock… for three minutes. On your mark Lianna, get set, GO!"

Just as she said she would, Lianna races up the stairs into the Vault. She quickly spins the safe wheel and jumps down into the Great Chasm with about 2:44 remaining. She then heads into the Throne Room and hits the actuators on the armrests real quickly. Once the Throne of the Pretender turns around completely, she runs into the Junction of the Secret Shafts and goes straight to the other end of the room to try the doors into the Chamber of Four Columns. Neither one opens (even after she hits their respective actuators twice), so she turns around and goes back. But before she re-enters the Throne Room, she notices the other half Pendant on the actuator for the door into the Throne Room. She waves both hands over her head to signal to Ray, scrambles back into the Throne Room, and then climbs up into the Burial Pit. (2:01)
Lianna hits the keypad next to the door from the Burial Pit into the Room of the Ancient Warriors as if it were an actuator. After about ten seconds (and after Kirk shouts: "She's lost in the Center of the Room!"), she then realizes what the room's objective is and searches the inside of the sarcophagus for the magnetic key. Once she finds it, she tries it on the keypad next to the door into the Room of the Ancient Warriors and it works. Lianna slowly crawls through the passage into the Room of the Ancient Warriors. (1:39) She immediately climbs into the middle suit of armor and pulls down the levers. That doesn't work, so she goes into the camera-left one and tries the levers there. It works, so she runs through the now-open door into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. (1:17) She reaches for the base of the statue, but before she can bring it to the front of the room she finally meets her first TEMPLE GUARD!
The Temple Guard startles Lianna so much that she drops the base of the statue on her foot. She hands in her Pendant of Life, and then picks up the base and places it on the platform in the front of the room. She then walks to the back of the room to grab the torso and the head, and assembles the statue with 57 seconds left. She then heads into the Room of the Secret Password and she's immediately caught by the second TEMPLE GUARD!
"You're gonna have to make up some real time now! Go Ray!" shouts Kirk. "Through the Vault Room, down into the Pit of Despair— Go!" Ray makes it into the Throne Room with 43 seconds left, but the Throne takes the usual seven to turn around. He then heads into the Junction of the Secret Shafts to grab the half Pendant off the nearby actuator, and then runs back into Throne Room with a full Pendant. (0:32) He makes it to the Room of the Secret Password with a short 16 seconds on the clock.
"He's only one room away from Helen of Troy's Missing Mirror!" announces Kirk, the audience cheering at the top of their lungs. Ray opens the first cabinet, takes out his mouthpiece and (with difficulty) reads: "KLAATU BARADA NIKTO!" It's the right password, and he enters the Pharaoh's Secret Passage with 6 seconds left. He slides down and enters the Quicksand Bog with 2 seconds left and grabs the Mirror… one second after time is called.
"NOOOOO!" Kirk and Lianna shout at the same time, and the audience groans loudly. "He made it into the room… he only needed one more second! You still get the XBOX game packages, even if you were this close to the Regent sports packages. And you had a great time here." Ray runs over to join Lianna and Kirk. Kirk shakes his head. "If only you had one more second… Too bad. Join us next time for another great legend of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!"

Episode Summary
Episode 15: Helen of Troy's Mystical Mirror

Name of Artifact: Helen of Troy's Mystical Mirror
Season: 1
Layout: 3
Result: Failed acquisition
Team: Blue Barracudas
Pendants Won: 1 ½
Location of Artifact: The Quicksand Bog

This Temple Run featured a peculiar design, and because of this, it resulted in one of the closest failed acquisitions in The Rediscovery's tenure. I could sense that Ray and Lianna would be a good team, but the Temple Run was tricky because of the placement of the Temple Guards and the very odd dead end that actually hid a very out-of-the-way half-Pendant. Lianna spent a little time caught up in the dead end, but eventually she was taken out of the Temple only one room away from the Mystical Mirror.

Ray was pretty fast, not to mention very tall— this could've contributed to a faster silver monkey assembly, if nothing else. He would've reached the Mirror if he hadn't gone into the Junction of the Secret Shafts to pick up the other half-Pendant (which he would have no use for anyway, considering he perfectly followed Lianna's path and she was taken out one room away from the artifact). As a result, he landed in the Quicksand Bog only a second to late to grab the Mirror, and the Barracudas didn't win the Regent sports packages. Considering how long the frontrunner had to go before being taken out, I'm pretty sure that if Ray went first, the run could've been a victory.

Trivia and Records:
Olmec's more detailed description of the Throne Room was curious, as this episode was taped on the second of three production days to feature it.  Similarly, the half-Pendant placement was very unusual, being in a room which was confirmed to be a dead end; the Temple Guard the team never encountered could be seen in the Ledges when Lianna runs through the Temple Gate.
