I start High School too, and I am so glad to be out of my middle school. I'm worried about my grades but at least I don't have to deal with the everything in Middle School.

Yeah, Middle School (for me personally) is too much drama and BS, although HS isn't too much better. I'm sure college will be better lol

Did you go to my middle school? Because drama and BS pretty much sums up my middle school experience. Okay... so I personally didn't have to put up with much drama, but my friends did, and most of the teachers had enough BS to spread around.

No I didn't...not that I know of. But my middle school however, was chuck full of drama and BS and it drove me nuts. I did have a few fun teachers in middle school though.

High school is very difficult, at least in my case, but the sense of freedom I get more than makes up for its shortcomings. I love high school (where I'll be a senior next year).

My 10th grade year was in no way shape or form as hard as my 9th grade year. I'm going to have a hard time this year though, what with Chemistry and AP English, however I'm looking forward to it.

I can say, without a doubt, I have had a much better time in highschool than any other year of my life.

Yeah, this coming year I have Global Society (History), Masterpieces (English), AP Physics, AP Calculus BC, Mandarin 1, and Electrical Engineering. Should be satisfyingly difficult. :) If it gets too bad, I can remind myself I'll be graduating more than twenty days earlier than I did this year.

I apologize if I already said any of this in a thread here before... I lose track of whom I've shared it all with.

Algebra II H
Social Studies H (don't know the name of the class)
Biology H
Spanish 1
English II H
Title: Eww I Start High School Next Year
Post by: Olmec on July 15, 2007, 04:12:10 PM
Yeah, the only reason I'm doing Latin II H, is because in middle school, if you take the same language all 3 years, instead of having to do level 1 at the high school, if you pass the honors test, you can bump up to level II. Our test was a 40-ish line translation that we had 90 minutes to do (because we were with German & Italian, and they have to do speculative writing in that language). I finished in about 25 minutes, so I did nothing for the rest of the time : But I got a 97 (I think it was 310/318), and you need 90+ to be qualified.

Never read it. I was considering reading it this year for my summer reading fiction novel, but it's on the "banned" list, since we might start reading in class. Anyway, I'm reading "That Was Then, This Was Now", and an S.E. Hinton biography (I did a research paper on her this year), since I loved The Outsiders.

Do me a favor and don't ever mention Faulkner again to me, please? The Sound and the Fury was the biggest piece of rubbish I'd ever seen called a novel. The book was unsuccessful when it came out, and still deserves to be today. Just to demonstrate what I didn't like about it, it switches time periods more than twenty times in the first chapter without any warning, which is written from the viewpoint of a retarded guy, by the way. ...And not to mention the total disregard for formatting and style throughout the entire book.

People call it a modern novel, but I call it an unreadable waste of paper and ink.

When you said retarded guy, the first thign I thought of was Flowers for Algernon. Anyway...my friend was talking about book that sounds like that, because it switches between past & present a lot, he said it's about a girl who's father is abusive and her mother just died.

I just graduated from high school, and I start college in late August. I'm really excited for it.

Except for my sophomore year and the beginning of senior year, I've enjoyed all of my high school. The trick is, you have to find an activity that you enjoy doing. That way, you'll get to meet people. In my case, I was fortunate enough to meet a group of people freshman year who remain my friends to this day.

So overall, high school will have its ups and downs, but it's so much better than junior high.

I totally agree with your point about finding something you like. I was very shy when I came into high school, and that deterred me from trying a lot of the clubs offered by the other students at the school. Last year, my junior year, I finally broke out of that mindset and joined the Math and Stagecrew Clubs. I felt so at home in these clubs; I can't believe I waited two years to get into them. I'll actually be the leader of both this coming year, so it should be fun. :) I got to know lots of great people last year and hope to learn more about the incoming freshmen the next.

So many that they had to close down a middle school to add a third building as part of the high school a few years back.  And i hear when my dad was little, he, my aunt and my grandparents used to live in a house that was demolished (along with the ones around it) in order to make space for the second building.

Like i was saying before, i definetely prefer high school to middle school since i get along better with my classmates now and when i started high school it was the first time i actually had any choice in what classes i'd take.  There were absolutely no options in the elementary and middle schools i went to.

We had a little bit of a choice in middle school, but that was just in which elective(s) you wanted to take, but you had to take 4 of 6, so you pretty much had at least 1 class you didn't want anyways.

Mandarin? You're so lucky, the only foreign languages you can take at my high school are Spanish, French, Portuguese, Khmer and Latin (of course, you know which one i went with,) but i'd like to take a little bit of Mandarin somewhere along the line.

1. English I H
2. World Civ II H
3. S1. Intro to Culinary Arts
S2. Nothing (Needs to be fixed)
4. Latin II H
5. S1. Forensics (Needs to be fixed)
S2. Lunch
6. Algebra II H
7. S1. Speech
S2. Applied Culinary Arts I
8. Gym
9. Bio H

Comments: Wow, lots of errors : There's no way that I can have Forensics first semester, since Speech is a pre-requisite to Forensics, therefore it can only be taught in second semester for freshmen. Also, I have nothing for second semester of 3rd period :))

On that note...I suppose, I've got all my books read, I just have a week to write the essays on them. No sweat, but I really don't want to do it.

Teacher things...

English: I haven't heard anything about her
Civ: Shit, I heard she is the worst and hardest teacher in the building. Oh joy :)
Intro to Culinary Arts///Nothing: Nice teacher & easy class///N/A
Latin: Yay, the teacher runs Latin club, where we eat pizza & play bocci ball!
Forensics///LUNCH: Easiest class///N/A
Algebra II: Mixed feelings. Some say she is like my Geometry & Algebra teacher in middle school (I would fail middle school to be in his class, he was taht good), some say she's evil
Speech///Applied Culinary Arts I: She's average///The teacher is "AFCS Teach X", so he/she/it is definietly new.
Gym: New teacher; "PE Teacher 9"
Bio: Easy class, just like my science teacher last year. And I HATED science last year.

All I know is that the teacher I have for AP english is related to me through my grandma's mom. Last time I had a member of that family teach me....well let's just say they aren't the nicest people around.

Nice! That's the one class that my school needs to have, but doesn't: Web Design. It doesn't even have Computer Science any more. What a bunch of reeking sleek, meek, anti-geek freaks! :o You get to cook too, which is awesome.

For our school, you need:

4 years of English
3 years of Math
3 years of Science
3 years of History (1 in Civ, 2 in USH)
1 year in World Language (Spanish, French, Chinese, Italian, German, Latin)
1 year in Visual/Preforming Arts (yuck, Art History for me)
1 year in Practical Arts (Cooking covers it for me)
1/2 year in Computer Science

So that means for the elective credits (the 3 listed at the bottom), all I need is Visual/Preforming Arts. My counselor recommended Art History to do as a sophmore, so I have more room for AP Classes. Next year I'm probably taking Art Histoy (full year), Applied Culinary Arts II, & Forensics (both half year)

Compare that to:

4 years of English
3 years of Math (but 4 is very highly recommended)
3 years of the same World Language or 2 of one and 2 of another.
3 years of History (1 World, 1 US, 1 seminar; can't take any History freshman year)
2.5 years of Technical Arts
2 years of Science (1 Biology, 1 Chemistry)
2 years of Health and Wellness (P.E.)
1 year of Visual and Performing Arts (covered by required freshman class)
0.5 years of College Counseling

It boggles my mind that we only have to take two years of sciences, but I guess the school wanted room for the Tech Arts requirement. And besides, blacksmithing is cooler than most labs, anyway. 8)

Oh, I need to do my teacher things!

1) English I H: Supposed to be pretty easy, but we read 18 books for a class reading thing. Supposed to be like one of my English teachers last year, and I was teacher's pet (but nobody thought so XD), so I'll do fine.
2) Civ II H: Shit, this teaher is the hardest freshman teacher. 9 page paper on Africa :
3) Intro to Cul. Arts/SPeech: Both easy
4) Latin II H: Teacher falls asleep in class X_X
5) Photo Editting & Web Design/Lunch: Great teacher/N/A
6) Algebra II H: Ehh, love or hate her, apparently
7) Lunch/Applied Culinary Arts I: N/A///N/A (since the teacher is "AFCS Teach X")
:)
9) Bio: A lot like my Earth Science teacher last year. PowerPoints & movie quizzes galore! : I hated that Earth Science class so damn much.

Yeah, it was a big invitational. Freshmen only did 2655 meters, while JV & Varsity did the full 5K. The park we raced at was beautiful. And our "team captain", per se, was all about how the course is so obvious, while I actually wanted to take a walkthrough. But since our race was in a half hour, I couldn't. Top 40 get medals, 110 people raced, just some information. So Frosh guys was first race, and I get out to a decent start. Going through the woods, 2 people from the same team tripped over each other, it was kinda funny :X. So then we had to run up this hill, and then down it. It wasn't bad at all, I used it to pass a few people. So then we had to go around the fields and down this road & through a chute marked by orange construction gate thingies. And the fact that there was a gate to the right (looked like it lead to the finish line), I immediately started sprinting. But then we have to make a left and run for about 3/4 more miles. So then, I immediately knew I couldn't get a medal. Yeah, finished in 52nd, and my time was 11:15.44, which is decent, I guess. I could definitely do better, but I've just come off calf and heel injuries, so it's decent I guess. Frosh came in 5th, JV came in 3rd, Varsity in 1st (woo!), so yeah :):):) It was a lot of fun.

I begin 9th grade on Monday

Schedule:

English: This ought to be easy

Geometry Honours: I should be in Algebra. For some reason in 8th grade the middle school decided I was smart enough to take Algebra early so I did and nearly failed.

Journalism: I love writing, so this is awesome. I hope it's not like the middle school, they let just anybody attend the class so, there were tons of preppy kids taking advantage of the teacher's lack of discipline so they could draw all over each other and take pictures of themselves

Physical Science: Seems kinda interesting.

Computers: I love technology, so whatever we do in here I'll be sure to love as long as it's not too easy.

A lot of my friends are doing all of these IB classes (this program offered at some other school like AP with the college credits thing, but supposedly better). I just want to do my HS in HS and my college in college.

My first day of 9th grade was boring. Everyone was boring. I can't wait until 11th grade because when you're in 11th grade you can ride around town during lunch. That's the only good thing about having a school "in the 'hood". Seriously, the surrounding areas of the place look a little werid. Nobody knows if we can have school tommrow because of the Hurricane/Tropical Storm/whatever Fay, so I have to watch the news () instead of Legends tonight. Boo.

Geometry was a catastrophe, I ended up having a 90 or so for the year because of all the fucking making up work I ended up doing for that class, but I didn't learn a single thing.

My Algebra 2 teacher can not teach at all.

My Algebra I teacher couldn't teach at all (well, he couldn't teach me) so I'm a little confused about Geometry Honours. Meh, I'll just ask one of my friends to help me out with it. Of course, all of my friends go to a different school. 2 days of school and I'm not liking HS too much. The campus is pretty, the teachers and staff are nice, it's just the rest of the Freshmen are mean. Like, one started writing various vulgarities on my desk today (wtf? wtf did I do?). The only people I get along with are the upperclassmen in my electives. Hell, I'm making fun of freshmen with them, and I'm one myself.

Ick....sorry your classmates are giving you a hard time. It's so pathetic and ridiculous that people have to pick on others just to be cool. I went through that, (classmates treating me like shit), and it sucks. At least you get along with the upperclassmen though, they're always the most mature.

School's been getting a little better, but now I'm feeling a lot of jealously towards my friends at their HS because they're all having fun togather. Florida has this lovely end of the year test called the FCAT. It tests you on things you learned that year. If you do not pass the FCAT, more likely than not, you'll get held back. I'm in 9th grade. Naturally, Florida will give me the 9th grade math test (Algebra). However, I am studying 10th grade math (Geometry). So, no matter how hard I try, no matter how good of a grade I get in Geometry, I am set up for failure because I have to take a test based on things I haven't seen in a long time (and failed when I did study it). Uh oh.

My first year of high school hasn't been treating me that well.  Last week I tried to transfer out of a class because I couldn't afford it.  I knew it was later in the year and I was wondering if they would let me but I was pretty sure they would since I couldn't afford it.  So I talked to the counselors but they sent me to the main office because they said they didn't do class transfers.  So what do they do?  Anyways, I had to talk to my assistant principal about changing classes and I tell him my story, and he could've cared less.  He just said find a class.  No suggestions, didn't say anything else.  And every class I looked for, was either too full or would hurt my grade if I went in right now.  So now I have to find some way to afford for my class because the people who run this school could really care less if you're poor or not.

1st semester almost over and I STILL HATE IT. Everyone is either mean to me, ignores me, or tries to take advantage of me because I'm smart (supposedly). Occasionally something will get thrown at me "on accident". Really, I'm not that dorky and weird, I promise! Seriously, I'm not even nerdy-looking, or anything, people at school probably just don't like me because I don't do stupid illegal things like everyone else does and I actually behave. I'll probably just go see a counselor or something tomorrow, this is getting ridiculous.

Yeah, my 1st semester isn't any better either, for most of the same reasons you stated. At my school, your either:
A. snobs and don't talk to you (The girls who wear 50 pounds of make-up, $500 ugg boots, and preppy $1000 outfits).
B. overly sarcastic, overly ditzy, overly bubbly, and overly "nice"  person whos EXTREMELY grating on my nerves. (More preps and ugg boots here).
C. a very rude, mean person thats mean to your face and grins at you and whispers things about you and shouts stupid things at you just to get you going.
D. A white trash, no class, condenscending bitch or douche bag that cusses like a sailor RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE TEACHER, brags about smoking weed and partying and drinking until you puke, and think doing that shit alone will make you cool. And you also brag about how you love being in "the in crowd."
E. A class clown who screams and makes noises and fools around in class to try to be "cool." And/or you talk back to the teacher and make fun of and act VERY RUDE to those who are actually quiet and behave.
Honestly, I am wise beyond my years compared to most classmates I know. I have the maturity of someone 25 years old or older compared to them. I flat out refuse to talk to or associate with the kind of people I listed above. I do have my fair share of good friends that I either met this year or last year, but really I'm in the same boat as you are. Sorry this is such an awful time for you right now.

P.S. I'm also sorry if I sounded judgmental or offended people with my "white trash" comment, but I'm just ranting. I'm not trying to offend anyone, just saying whats on my mind.

Seriously. If I were a teacher (which I might someday become, but certainly not on the high school level), I'd pay a lot better attention to the students. I see and hear so many things that kids should be getting in trouble for, yet they never get punished.

Everyone says that High School goes by fast, and hopefully everyone's right. Though it's been unpleasant, it has been going by quickly. At least academic-wise, things have been going good. I don't ever remember making such good grades in school.

High School years do go by fast, even through your worst school years it'll still zoom by. As far as academics for me, I do pretty decently in everything except math and science....yuck. People say science is the subject everyone is mediocre in. Yeah right, science is BY FAR my worst subject next to math. How I passed science classes in the past is beyond me. Just when I think I'm gonna do amazing on a science test, I end up getting the worst score in the whole class. -_-

I'm the exact opposite in science. I'm the only one in my class who has an A, and most kids don't have passing grades. My class is full of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who haven't passed the class yet. I used to really suck at science though.

You know what's a class to avoid?

Accounting.

Plain and simple.

Biggest mistake of my senior year was taking that class.

I am now thoroughly convinced that High School is the worst place on the entire Earth. Just 3 and a half more years to go 'till 2012! xP

I only have about 4 more months to go until my school days are over. Yeah High School is a pretty sucky place, but wanna know an even worse place? Middle School. Ugh, now those are where some of the worst memories were. And the fact that my middle school was only 200 kids for a population was even worse.

Really? I loved my middle school. Everyone was friendly and the teachers were crazy. I'd do anything to be able to go back there.

Eh, well my Middle School wasn't that great. High School is worse though, but at least with a new semester I have some better classes. (And I'm glad too, because I was so tired of some of my first semester classes). My school is so messed up with its "block schedule to everyday schedule" transition, that even AFTER exams for a certain class was over, we were still stuck in the same class. It was extremely annoying, its like, "Put us in different classes already!" And I couldn't stand the kids I was in those classes with.

Now that spring break has come and gone, it's now time to count down the days until school gets let out :D Just 42 more days to go (including weekends, I hate when people don't include those). This is the longest part of the year since there's no breaks between now and the end of the year :p I'll just have to make my own then. I have 4 more sick days left until the school gets on to me about it.

My spring break was last month, so were like right in the middle of that "longest part of the year." I think my old school (back in CT) had their spring break all this week, which is one thing I don't miss about public schools up in New England. And next week is the TAKS test for the whole school. The only TAKS test I need to retake is Science, which shouldn't be half bad seeing that I only failed the last test by one question. I take that one next Thursday, and Friday I have to present my senior project. That shouldn't be too bad either, its just presenting to a bunch of judges my power point, in which mine came out good.

My graduation is June 9th, so that would be 24 more days left of school for me, 31 if you count weekends. But then why is everyone at school saying theres like 50 days left of school? :?

:)

It's too bad I already blistered my hand on one of the ropes. lol

But seriously though...we're doing a "Basic Training" kind of thing (but no one mentioned GUTS lol) with netting, straight up rope climbs, a rock wall, and a finale of swinging out on a rope and falling into an air bag (filled with dead cockroaches, yuck...). So it's really fun for me.

Lovin' high school so far. Except for the math homework. lol
