Restarted...

Anyway, to begin, I'd like to be a little hypocritical. I know I said I'm not really a fan of downtuning or dropped tunings, but I'm really loving having my electric tuned a full step down. However, it's mainly because I can play so many songs in this tuning: most of Sentenced's catalog, "Crack In A Stone" by Amorphis, "Sad But True" by Metallica... and the list goes on.

I may be working on and recording a Gothic metal demo or EP soon if I'm in luck - really all I need is someone to play the bass and any solos that I may wish to add; because I'm going to be taking care of the guitars, vocals, and drums by myself. The main reason I want to do this project is because I've written some songs lately that really don't fit thrash music - for the most part that's because of the lyrics; but I also had this vision of a very technical (but just four-minute long) Gothic metal song, as weird or paradoxical as that may sound.

Also, got Beyond Magnetic, Design Your Universe, and a third album by a Taiwanese melodic black metal band called Chthonic today.

Everyone's opinion on what belongs to what genre varies... so just listen to your own.  It's less of a hassle.

I've become really addicted to Epica lately, particularly Design Your Universe.  I've been trying to break in Requiem for the Indifferent as well, but aside from "Storm the Sorrow," it's not really sticking in my mind, for some reason.  I'm not sure what it is, but this album doesn't feel quite as remarkable as the ones before it... or is Design Your Universe just too hard of an act to follow?


Thoughts, if anyone else has already listened to the new album?

Picked this up from another outlet of the same chain of Israeli CD stores at the Tel Aviv Airport!

Btw, it's the extended cut that includes ALL the songs that were played and were cut off on the American edition (e.g. "That Was Just Your Life"), which is just awesome. And it seems like they overdubbed all of Dave's vocals on this version. I guess that's reasonable because his voice was terrible here, but sometimes they're just ridiculous (i.e. overdubbing "Hook In Mouth" with a vocal track from exactly 20 years before, at the 1990 Wembley show).

Well, this is a song that Delain has just released from their upcoming album. RJF, you may be interested but I simply don't like it. April Rain and especially their debut, Lucidity, are pretty difficult to top though.

Well, several reasons, actually. For one, it's a very good example of the "tune down to sound heavier" method that I dislike. You can tell that this one was written to be an accessible single to persuade fans of nu or alternative metal bands, rock, or even mainstream into listening to them. This shouldn't bother me if the song was particularly good; but considering that this is a band that put out a symphonic Gothic metal masterpiece as their debut album, and the fact that this song just doesn't catch my attention that much, it does.

Plus, it reminds me just a little of this Poisonblack song:

I don't believe I've recommended this one to RJF yet, so here we go:



In actual fact, Wintersun is a melodic black metal with the occasional clean and melodically sung vocals; this is just the most ballad-like track they've done. If you ever feel like trying something more extreme, I recommend their song "Starchild."

This just in... Megadeth WILL play the album "Countdown To Extinction" in its entirety at Teatro Caupolican in Santiago, Chile on Sept 7.

So far, everyone I've showed this song to has fallen in love with it. Will TAW or RJF dare to be a combo breaker?

Before I listen to it, what type of metal? Any growls or harsh vocals?

A very short bout of growls in the middle, but all clean melodic vocals otherwise. Seriously though, IMHO Tomi Joutsen is one of the best growlers in all of metal and if you ever want to hear very full and understandable growls so as to not hear a bad example as the first and be turned off, this is the guy and the band to check out.

Oh, and Amorphis really isn't the band to categorize. They stay true to their namesake, and this song could only be described as melodic folk death Gothic metal if we wanted to include all of their music's elements.
