Episode 15: Houyi's Sun-Bird Feathers

(Camera moves through a thick jungle taking two wrong turns and finally revealing King Olmec)

Olmec: Legends of the Hidden Temple!

(Title card forms)

Olmec: With your guide, Kirk Fogg!

(Title card shatters)

Olmec: And here he is now!

(Kirk swings on a rope into the new Legends set)

Kirk: Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Thank you Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple. The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan temple guards. Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple. Which one are we gonna hear about today?

Olmec: The legend of Houyi's Sun-Bird feathers.

Kirk: Oh, Houyi's Sun-Bird feathers. Well, the legend is set and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the feathers. Will it be:

(Camera shows each team cheering)

The Red Jaguars?

The Blue Barracudas?

The Green Monkeys?

The Orange Iguanas?

The Purple Parrots?

Or the Silver Snakes?

They'll have to pass some pretty tough physical and mental tests, and in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's temple. But first, the must cross the moat, and Olmec will tell them how they'll have to do it today.

Olmec: Before each of you are several ancient rings hanging above the moat. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will grab each ring as they make their way across to the other side. If you fall into the water, go back and start again. Once the first player is safely across, their partner will cross the same way. When both players have crossed the moat, run over and hit the gong. (Kirk hits the Silver Snakes' gong) The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round.

Kirk: OK teams, are you ready?

Teams: YEAH!

Kirk: Are you ready Olmec?

Olmec: Let's get crackin'!

Kirk: On your mark, get set, GO!

Red Jaguars - 0:16
Silver Snakes - 0:21
Orange Iguanas - 0:31
Green Monkeys - 0:37

We've got our four teams right here! They are: The Red Jaguars, the Green Monkeys, the Orange Iguanas, and the Silver Snakes!

Kirk: As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about Houyi's Sun-Bird feathers. Pay attention teams, because your knowledge of the legend will bring you one step closer to Olmec's temple.

Olmec: In Chinese mythology, the sun is sometimes symbolized as a three-legged crow, called a Sun-bird. Dijun, God of the Eastern Heaven, had ten of these Sun-birds, being his sons. Legend has it that around 2170 B.C., the Sun-birds had a conference in a mulberry tree in the eastern sea.

Crow #1: I'm sick of this! Every day one of us travels to rise in some part of the world on that dumb carriage-

Crow #2: Watch it, Xihe drives that thing. You know, the Mother of the Suns?

Crow #1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. The point is, this routine of ours has gotten flat-out BORING. Now, does anybody have an idea on how we can change this?

Crow #3: How about that tomorrow, we all rise at the same time?

Crow #1: Now THAT sounds fun.

Olmec: the next day, the cumulated appearance of the birds caused intense heat on the earth. Yao, the Emperor of China, pleaded to Houyi, the God of Archery, for help.

Yao: O, great Houyi, please rid us of these pests in the sky! They're making everything drier than my uncle's face!

Olmec: With his mighty bow and arrows, Houyi shot down nine of the Sun-birds, but left one live, knowing that without at least one, the world would be left in total darkness. He also kept some of the feathers until they were eventually brought to the Temple. Your quest is to find the feathers, and bring them back here.

Kirk: Thank you Olmec, now tell us, where are the feathers?

Olmec: Houyi's Sun-Bird feathers can be found in the Clockwork Room.

Kirk: Teams, you're now standing on the Steps of Knowledge. In a minute, Olmec will ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you. If you're right, you'll move down to the next level. But if you're wrong or ran out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance to answer. The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's temple. Olmec, we're now ready for your first question.

Olmec: What species of birds were the Sun-birds thought to have been?

(Male Red Jaguar rings in)

Kirk: Red Jaguars

Male Red Jaguar: Crows.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Nice job!

(Red Jaguars move down)

Next question, Olmec.

Olmec: How many Sun-birds were there? Eight, ten, or twelve?

(Female Green Monkey rings in)

Kirk: Green Monkeys

Female Green Monkey: Ten.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Step down!

(Green Monkeys move down)

Next question, Olmec.

Olmec: How many legs did a Sun-bird have?

(Female Silver Snake rings in)

Kirk: Silver Snakes

Female Silver Snake: Three legs.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Nice job! Step down!

(Silver Snakes move down)

Next question, Olmec.

Olmec: Who was the God of the Eastern Heaven? Dijun, Pangu, or–?

(Male Silver Snake rings in)

Kirk: Silver Snakes

Male Silver Snake: Dijun.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Right again!

(Silver Snakes move down)

Now you guys are one step away. Next question.

Olmec: In relationship to Dijun, the Sun-birds were his…sons, daughters, or pets?

(Female Green Monkey rings in)

Kirk: Green Monkeys

Female Green Monkey: His sons.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Nice job! Step down!

(Green Monkeys move down)

One more step and you guys go to the temple games. Next question.

Olmec: What kind of berry tree did the Sun-birds call home? Tayberry, Mulberry, or Dewberry?

(Female Silver Snake rings in)

Kirk: Silver Snakes

Female Silver Snake: Mulberry.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: We got our first team! It's the Silver Snakes!

(Silver Snakes move down and high five)

Who'll join you? Next question.

Olmec: Xihe was known to be the Mother of the…suns, moons, or Earth?

(Female Orange Iguana rings in)

Kirk: Orange Iguanas

Female Orange Iguana: The suns.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Step down!

(Orange Iguanas move down)

Next question, Olmec.

Olmec: The mode of transportation Xihe used for the Sun-birds was by–?

(Male Red Jaguar rings in)

Kirk: Red Jaguars

Male Red Jaguar: By carriage.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Step down!

(Red Jaguars move down)

Now you guys are one step away. Next question.

Olmec: The Crows made the decision that next time, instead of one of them rising–?

(Male Red Jaguar rings in)

Kirk: Red Jaguars

Male Red Jaguar: They'll all rise.

Olmec: That is correct!

(Red Jaguars move down, high five each other and the Silver Snakes)

Kirk: We've got our two teams that are going head to head in the Temple Games! They are: The Red Jaguars! And the Silver Snakes!
