Episode 12: Paris's Poisoned Arrow

(Camera moves through a thick jungle taking two wrong turns and finally revealing King Olmec)

Olmec: Legends of the Hidden Temple!

(Title card forms)

Olmec: With your guide, Kirk Fogg!

(Title card shatters)

Olmec: And here he is now!

(Kirk swings on a rope into the new Legends set)

Kirk: Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Thank you Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple. The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan temple guards. Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple. Which one are we gonna hear about today?

Olmec: The legend of Paris's poisoned arrow.

Kirk: Oh, Paris's poisoned arrow. Well, the legend is set and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the poisoned arrow. Will it be:

(Camera shows each team cheering)

The Red Jaguars?

The Blue Barracudas?

The Green Monkeys?

The Orange Iguanas?

The Purple Parrots?

Or the Silver Snakes?

They'll have to pass some pretty tough physical and mental tests, and in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's temple. But first, the must cross the moat, and Olmec will tell them how they'll have to do it today.

Olmec: Before each of you is an ancient rope that hangs above the moat. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will hang from the rope with their hands and feet and shinny across to the other side. Once the first player is safely across, their partner will cross the same way. When both players have crossed the moat, run over and hit the gong. (Kirk hits the Silver Snakes' gong) The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round.

Kirk: OK teams, are you ready?

Teams: YEAH!

Kirk: Are you ready Olmec?

Olmec: Ready when you are Kirk!

Kirk: On your mark, get set, GO!

Green Monkeys - 0:21
Red Jaguars - 0:32
Blue Barracudas - 0:38
Purple Parrots - 0:42

We've got our four teams right here! They are: The Red Jaguars, the Blue Barracudas, the Green Monkeys, and the Purple Parrots!

Kirk: As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about Paris's poisoned arrow. Pay attention teams, because your knowledge of the legend will bring you one step closer to Olmec's temple.

Olmec: One of the greatest warriors of Greek mythology was Achilles. Legend has it that as a child, his nymph mother Thetis dipped him in the River Styx. His father was Peleus, the king of the Myrmidons.

Peleus: Darling, what are you doing with our son?

Thetis: Just soaking him the river, dear.

Peleus: I can see that, but why? We have a tub the size of a lake back home, you know.

Thetis: Didn't you hear the prophecy? Our son would one day die in battle from an arrow to the foot! The River Styx is an enchanted waters that grants everlasting invincibility! I'm simply saving Achilles from a horrible fate, that's all.

Olmec: But Thetis held Achilles by the heel, which was not washed over by the water of the magical river. Achilles grew up to be a man of war who survived many great battles, until he went to Troy. On that faithful day when he and his Greek soldiers invaded Troy by hiding in a giant wooden horse that was taken into the city, Paris, the Prince of Troy shot a poisoned arrow that lodged right into Achilles' heel, killing him instantly. Achilles was cremated, and his ashes buried in an urn, but the poisoned arrow that killed him was sent to the Temple years later. Your quest is to find the arrow, and bring it back here.

Kirk: Thank you Olmec, now tell us, where is this poisoned arrow?

Olmec: Paris's poisoned arrow can be found in the King's Storeroom.

Kirk: Teams, you're now standing on the Steps of Knowledge. In a minute, Olmec will ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you. If you're right, you'll move down to the next level. But if you're wrong or ran out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance to answer. The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's temple. Olmec, we're now ready for your first question.

Olmec: What is the definition of a "myth"? An imaginary or fictitious person or thing–?

(Male Green Monkey rings in)

Kirk: Green Monkeys

Male Green Monkey: An imaginary or fictitious person or thing.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Nice job!

(Green Monkeys move down)

Next question, Olmec.

Olmec: What does Achilles' name mean? Pain, war, or macho?

(Male Purple Parrot rings in)

Kirk: Purple Parrots

Male Purple Parrot: War.

Olmec: Incorrect.

(Male Red Jaguar rings in)

Kirk: Red Jaguars

Male Red Jaguar: Pain.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Step down Red Jaguars!

(Red Jaguars move down)

Now you guys are on the board. Next question.

Olmec: Thetis was known to be a sea–?

(Male Red Jaguar rings in)

Kirk: Red Jaguars

Male Red Jaguar: A sea nymph.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Right again!

(Red Jaguars move down)

Now you guys are one step away. Next question.

Olmec: Peleus was known as the king of the–?

(Female Red Jaguar rings in)

Kirk: Red Jaguars

Female Red Jaguar: The Myrmidons.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: We got our first team! It's the Red Jaguars!

(Red Jaguars move down and high five)

We still need one more team. Next question.

Olmec: What was the relationship between Thetis and Peleus? Mother and father, daughter and father-in-law, or wife and husband?

(Female Purple Parrot rings in)

Kirk: Purple Parrots

Female Purple Parrot: Wife and husband.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Nice job!

(Purple Parrots move down)

Next question, Olmec.

Olmec: Which of these rivers did Thetis dip Achilles in?

(Female Blue Barracuda rings in)

Kirk: Blue Barracudas

Female Blue Barracuda: Styx.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Step down Blue Barracudas!

(Blue Barracudas move down)

It's all tied up on the second step; who'll join the Red Jaguars? Next question.

Olmec: The reason why Thetis was doing this was because the river would give Achilles…longevity, invincibility, or–?

(Male Blue Barracuda rings in)

Kirk: Blue Barracudas

Male Blue Barracuda: Invincibility.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Right again!

(Blue Barracudas move down)

Now you guys are one step away. Next question.

Olmec: When the Greeks invaded Troy, they used a giant wooden horse known as–?

(Male Green Monkey rings in)

Kirk: Green Monkeys

Male Green Monkey: The Trojan Horse.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Step down Green Monkeys!

(Green Monkeys move down)

Next question, Olmec.

Olmec: Who killed Achilles?

(Male Blue Barracuda rings in)

Kirk: Blue Barracudas

Male Blue Barracuda: Paris.

Olmec: That is correct!

(Blue Barracudas move down and high five/ten each other and the Red Jaguars)

Kirk: We've got our two teams that are going head to head in the Temple Games! They are: The Red Jaguars! And the Blue Barracudas!

Kirk: Welcome back to Legends, now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest. But before we get started, I wanna talk to our team players. On the Red Jaguars we have:

Nicole: Nicole Parizeau.

Kirk: How old are you Nicole?

Nicole: 13.

Kirk: It says here that you have family in France. Now tell me about that.

Nicole: Well I'm French and I go to France at least once a year.

Kirk: When do you go to France?

Nicole: Usually on holidays. I remember the bombing in Paris a few years back.

Kirk: Where were you at the time?

Nicole: Here in the U.S..

Kirk: That's good. Now who are you?

Felix: Felix Keith. I'm 12 years old.

Kirk: It says here that you ride your bike a lot.

Felix: Yeah, last year I tried doing a 360 and I fell off and broke my arm.

Kirk: Tough luck. Kids don't try that at home. Let's hear it for the Red Jaguars!

And on the Blue Barracudas we have:

Amanda: Amanda.

Kirk: How old are you Amanda?

Amanda: 11.

Kirk: It says here that you do gymnastics.

Amanda: Well I've been doing it since I was young and I'm very flexible. I can balance and even do splits. Watch.

(Amanda shows her split)

Kirk: Nice. I don't think I can do that. Let me help you back up.

(Kirk helps Amanda back up)

Now let's talk to your partner. Who are you?

Blake: Blake.

Kirk: How old are you?

Blake: 13.

Kirk: It says here that you play the guitar.

Blake: Yeah, I think I'd become a good guitarist. I basically taught myself how to play it.

Kirk: Who says you need lessons to be a good guitarist? Those are the Blue Barracudas; let's hear it for 'em!

Why don't you guys get set up for the second temple game over there and girls get set up for the first one here. In the temple games, teams are competing to win Pendants of Life. The winning team will need those pendants to protect them from the dreaded temple guards as they make their way through the temple. There are three temple games, and Olmec will tell us about the first one.

Olmec: Achilles grew up to be a famous warrior, whether he wore armor to battle or not. You have to earn yours. When Kirk gives the signal, leap to the first platform and grab the armor there. Then take it back, place it on the warrior's outline, and make your way to the next one. While moving back and forth, avoid the swinging obstacles-if they hit you in mid-jump, you'll have to back and start over. The first player to collect all four pieces of armor, OR the player furthest along in 60 seconds wins!

Kirk: Let's put 60 seconds on the clock! On your mark, get set, GO!

Felix - 3 (Out of Time)
Blake - 2

Kirk: Time's up! Let's see what we've got here. We got the Red Jaguars with three and the Blue Barracudas with two. That means that the Red Jaguars get a half a pendant of life. Blue Barracudas can catch up in the next game; it's worth a half pendant. Olmec, tell us about it.

Olmec: Paris was an expert archer who managed to shoot his arrow in Achilles' only weak spot. You're going to learn how to shoot arrows with your feet! When Kirk gives the signal, place an arrow between your feet, swing out and toss it into one of the grid's holes. When you come back, get another arrow and try again. You need only one to fill a single slot. The first player that fills all nine holes, OR the player with the most filled at the end of 60 seconds wins!

Kirk: Let's put 60 seconds on the clock! On your mark, get set, GO!

Nicole - 9 (0:04 Remaining)
Amanda - 8

Kirk: That's it! Red Jaguars filled all nine of their holes while the Blue Barracudas filled eight. That means that the Red Jaguars get another half a pendant of life! The Blue Barracudas can tie in the next game; it's worth a half pendant. Olmec, tell us about it.

Olmec: The Greeks hid inside a mechanical horse to invade Troy. You get to ride on one of ours. But hold on tight, because when Kirk gives the signal, the horse will begin to spin. The team that stays on the longest, OR the team with the most players left at the end of 60 seconds wins!

Kirk: I remember there once being an episode about the Trojan Horse during this show's original run. Let's put 60 seconds on the clock! On your mark, get set, GO!

Red Jaguars - Nicole stayed on (0:32 Remaining)
Blue Barracudas - Both fell off

Kirk: That's it! One Red Jaguar stayed on while both Blue Barracudas fell off. That means that the Red Jaguars get a full pendant of life, giving them two pendants; the Blue Barracudas weren't able to win any; the Red Jaguars are going to the temple!

Kirk: Welcome back! The Red Jaguars have earned the right to enter Olmec's temple. But before they get started, Olmec's gonna give them some information to help them retrieve Paris's poisoned arrow.

Olmec: You could start by running up the stairs to the Crypt! Grab the book from the skeleton and pass into the Pit of Despair. Here, you must choose your next path. You could race up to the King's Storeroom, smash the clay pots and find the key that could take you down into Medusa's Lair. Place the snakes in Medusa's head and pass into the Room of the Ancient Warriors. Place yourself in the correct armor and open the door to the SHRIIIIIIINE of the Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Clockwork Room. Turn the gears to lift the weight, and you can climb down into the Dungeon where you could smash to the Dark Forest. But beware of the Temple Guards that may inhabit the trees. Find the key in the tree, and you'll enter the Bamboo Forest. If you escape, you could gain entry to the Throne Room. Sit upon the Throne of the Pretender, then race through the pit, CLIMB through the Ledges, race down the stairs and back through the temple gate. The choices are yours and yours alone. You won two pendants in the temple games. Who's going first?

Nicole: I am!

Olmec: Very well, Nicole. When Kirk gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the temple and make your way towards the poisoned arrow. Hidden inside the temple are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your pendant for an extra life and go on. BUT if you're caught without a pendant, you will be taken out of the temple, and it'll be Felix's turn to enter and try his luck. If you can reach the arrow, all of the doors of the temple will instantly unlock and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the gates with the arrow in three minutes and you will both be handsomely rewarded and here's how:

Dee Bradley Baker:

First, you're both going to get…a fifth-generation iPad! Powerful, portable, and personal with a gorgeous 9.7-inch Retina display in a thin, durable aluminum design that weighs just a pound. iPad puts incredible capabilities in your hands with a powerful A9 chip, 8MP camera, FaceTime HD camera, Touch ID, Apple Pay, Wi-Fi, all-day battery life, and over a million apps on the App Store. From Apple Incorporated.

If you can grab the arrow before three minutes is up, you'll also receive…an Ozark Trail 22-piece Camping Combo Set. Includes one four-person tent, one gear loft, eight tent stakes, two sleeping bags, two pillows, two foam sleeping pads, two chairs, two dry bags, one lantern, and one carry-all bag. From Ozark Trail.

And if you get the arrow out of the temple before three minutes is up, then you'll both be going to Jamaica! Franklyn D. Resort and Spa: Jamaica's ocean front family resort! Includes all meals, water sports, children's programs and tours to Dunn's River Falls.

Kirk: They wanna go to Jamaica. Well let's get started here. Olmec, lower your gate!

(Olmec moans gutturally while the gate lowers)

Kirk: Get in position. Mouthpieces in. Put three minutes on the clock!

(Timer bangs down)

Kirk: On your mark, get set, GO!

(Temple run music starts and HUD moves in on screen)

Nicole heads up into the Crypt, tries the camera-right skeleton which opens up the Pit of Despair and encounters a temple guard (2:52)! She gives up her pendant and heads down into the Pit of Despair. She makes her way across the pit without falling and opens up Medusa's Lair (2:40). She heads in and starts putting the snakes in Medusa's head. Once the fifth snake is placed (2:23), she heads down into the Throne Room. By just stepping on the throne (2:14), she opens up the Bamboo Forest. She makes her way across and opens up the Dark Forest. Aware of a temple spirit in either tree, she busts through the wall into the Dungeon and encounters another temple guard (1:56)! Felix decides to head down into the Ledges and heads for the lower door. He opens it up (1:45), and sees that the Throne Room was open from the Pit of Despair. He makes his way across the bottom floor, and once he reaches the Dungeon (1:18), he climbs up into the Clockwork Room. He turns the key four times, opening up the Shrine of the Silver Monkey (1:01). He enters the shrine, has a bit of trouble with the silver monkey until he finally figures it out with a little help from Kirk. Once he fully assembles the silver monkey (0:42), he heads into the Room of the Ancient Warriors. He persistently tries the middle and camera-left armors until Kirk tells him to try the camera-right armor, which opens up the King's Storeroom (0:22). He heads up, grabs the arrow (0:18), climbs down into Medusa's Lair, jumps down into the Pit of Despair, and time runs out as he enters the ledges.
