Title: Legends: Rebirth-The Lost Cap of Casey Jones
Post by: The Bandit King on August 08, 2009, 08:53:49 AM
Episode 8: The Lost Cap of Casey Jones

The camera winds and twists its way through a thick jungle of strange and exotic plants. After a few wrong turns, it finally stops in front of an ancient Mayan temple. At the base of the temple, a giant stone head sits. Suddenly, the head’s eyes light up and it begins to speak:

Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth!” These words appear on the screen. “With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is now!”

A middle-aged man wearing a denim shirt and blue jeans swings in on a rope. He drops down and runs up the Steps of Knowledge, microphone in hand.

“Thank you! Thank you, everybody! Nice to see everyone again! It’s good to see you again, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth. The rooms are filled with lost treasures protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legends behind each of these newly discovered treasures in his Temple…which one are we gonna hear about today, Olmec?”

“The legend of the Lost Cap of Casey Jones,” Olmec replies.

“Oh, the Lost Cap of Casey Jones,” Kirk repeats. “Well, the legend is set, and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the lost cap—will it be:

“The Red Jaguars?” The camera zooms in on each team as they are introduced.
“The Blue Barracudas?
“The Green Monkeys?
“The Orange Iguanas?
“The Purple Parrots?
“Or the Silver Snakes?”

“They’ll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests, but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter the Temple. But first, they’ll have to cross the Moat, and Olmec’s gonna tell us how they’ll have to do that today…”

Olmec begins to explain the Moat Crossing:
“Before you, a long rope hangs into the Moat. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will swim out to the rope, grab it, swim back with it, and swing across. Once you’re safely across, throw the rope to your partner, who will then swing across in the same way. If your feet touch the water while you’re swinging, you must go back and start again. Once both players reach the other side, run over and hit the gong.” Kirk bangs the Silver Snakes’ gong to demonstrate. “The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round!”

“All right, let’s get started,” Kirk says. “Hey teams, are you ready?”
All six teams scream and cheer in response.
“Mr. Olmec, are you ready?” Kirk asks.
“Let’s rock,” Olmec replies.
“Okay then,” says Kirk. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

All six team members jump in the Moat and grab the rope. The Blue Barracudas’ boy, Green Monkeys’ girl and Purple Parrots’ boy are first back on dry land, followed about a second later by the Red Jaguars’ boy. These four teams swing across as the other teams climb out of the Moat, and all four make it across and throw the rope to their partners. The Silver Snakes’ boy successfully swings across, as does the Orange Iguanas’ girl, and both throw their ropes to their respective partners. “All six of these teams are doing great, but we can only take four of ‘em!” Kirk narrates. The other four teams have successfully swung across, and all four rush to hit their gongs in this order: Purple Parrots, Blue Barracudas, Red Jaguars, and Green Monkeys.

“That’s it—we’ve got our four winning teams!” shouts Kirk as he goes over to stand beside the Purple Parrots. “It was fast and furious, but the Purple Parrots had no problems whatsoever, and going on to the Steps of Knowledge are the Purple Parrots…and the Green Monkeys,” Kirk briefly pauses between each team’s name to allow for applause. “And the Blue Barracudas, and the Red Jaguars! The Orange Iguanas and the Silver Snakes were really good, too. They’re not gonna be goin’ home empty-handed. We have a great gift for ‘em!” They receive a $50 gift certificate from FYE.

Kirk and the remaining four teams are now standing atop the Steps of Knowledge. “As the quest continues, it’s time for Olmec to tell us about the Lost Cap of Casey Jones. But teams, pay attention, because your knowledge of the legend could bring you a step closer to Olmec’s Temple…”

Olmec begins to tell the story:
“One of the most famous people in the history of railroads was the engineer Casey Jones. In 1900, he worked for the Illinois Central Railroad in Memphis, Tennessee, driving the famous ‘cannonball’ trains. The cannonball trains were very large, very fast passenger trains, and Casey was one of the most revered engineers of his day. Legend has it that one day, Casey’s friend Sam called him with a favor.
“‘Casey, I’ve got the cramps. You figure you could take the No. 1 down to Jackson for me?’
“‘Sure thing, Sam. I’ll have it there in no time.’
“So Casey rounded up his fireman for the train’s trip to Jackson, Mississippi. When Casey reached the town of Senatobia, he passed the wreck site of an old freight train from the previous year.
“‘Hmm…I’d forgot all about ol’ Steve. Guess you never can tell when your time’s gonna come.’
“Little did Casey know how prophetic his words would be. When he reached the town of Vaughan, a huge train blocked the tracks, and Casey’s train was headed straight for it. He ordered the fireman to jump, then applied the brakes, but the tracks were wet and slippery. Casey pulled so hard on the brake that his engineer’s cap flew off his head and landed in a nearby field. Casey’s train collided into the stopped train, killing Casey, but in the process, he had slowed the train down enough to save the lives of every single passenger on board. Casey’s story remains a testament to railroad workers everywhere, but his engineer’s cap was lost to time—until now. Your quest is to find the Lost Engineer’s Cap of Casey Jones and bring it back here.”

“All right, thanks, Olmec,” Kirk responds. “But tell us, where is the Lost Cap?”

“The Lost Cap of Casey Jones can be found in the Tomb of the Headless Kings,” Olmec replies. The camera zooms in on the cap in the lap of the right-hand king before fading back to Kirk.

“All right,” Kirk says. “Teams, you’re now standing on the Steps of Knowledge. In just a minute, Olmec’s gonna ask you a question about the legend. If you know the answer, stomp down on that ancient mark in front of you. If you’re right, you can move down to the next level, but if you’re wrong or you run out of time, I’m gonna give the other teams a chance to answer.” Kirk begins descending the Steps. “The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec’s Temple. Olmec…we’re now ready for the first question.”

Olmec begins:
“Was Casey Jones: a pilot, an engineer, or—”
The Purple Parrots ring in. “An engineer?”
“That is correct,” Olmec responds. Purple Parrots step down a level.
“Purple Parrots give the first correct response,” Kirk narrates. “But we’ve got a long way to go—next question.”

“In Casey’s time, were large, fast passenger trains called: musket ball trains, cannonball trains, or basketball trains?”
The Red Jaguars ring in. “Cannonball trains?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Red Jaguars descend one level.
“Now the Red Jaguars are in it,” Kirk narrates. “Next question, Olmec.”

“What did Casey pass in Senatobia, Mississippi: a construction site—”
The Green Monkeys ring in early. “Uh…a train?”
“That is not one of our three choices,” Olmec explains. “The three choices are: a construction site, a wreck site, or a campsite?”
The Blue Barracudas ring in. “A wreck site?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Blue Barracudas step down.
“Now the Blue Barracudas have got one,” Kirk narrates. “This is still anybody’s ballgame—next question, please.”

“According to our legend, what blocked the path of Casey’s train—”
The Red Jaguars ring in. “Another train?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Red Jaguars descend to the next-to-last step.
“Now the Red Jaguars are only one step away,” Kirk narrates. “There’s still plenty of time left, everybody. Next question, Olmec.”

“Who did Casey tell to jump from the train: the conductor, the fireman, or his wife?”
The Red Jaguars ring in. “The fireman?”
“That is correct!” Olmec booms. The Red Jaguars step to the bottom.
“And now we have our first team for the Temple Games!” Kirk narrates. “But we still need one more team. Who’s it gonna be—the Blue Barracudas, the Purple Parrots, or the Green Monkeys? Next question, Olmec.”

“Who survived the wreck of Casey’s train: no one, everyone, or everyone except Casey?”
The Blue Barracudas ring in. “Uh…everyone except Casey?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Blue Barracudas step to the next-to-last step.
“Now the Blue Barracudas are only one step away,” Kirk narrates. “There’s still plenty of time for the other teams to catch up, though. Next question, please.”

“Which of these is a term for a railroad car that carries coal: a fender, a tender, or a bender?”
After a few seconds, the Purple Parrots ring in. “A tender?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Purple Parrots move down to the next-to-last step.
“Now the Purple Parrots are only a step away,” Kirk narrates. “There’s still plenty of time for the Green Monkeys to catch up. Next question, Olmec.”

“What is the last car on a freight train called: a kazoo—”
The Purple Parrots ring in. “Caboose!”
“That…is…correct!” Olmec booms. Surprised by Olmec’s response, the Purple Parrots step down to the bottom level.

“Whoa, scared ‘em there!” Kirk shouts as he runs over and stands between the two advancing teams. “But regardless, we’ve got two teams—the Purple Parrots, and the Red Jaguars! Blue Barracudas and Red—Green Monkeys, you guys come on over here, you were great, too. We’re not sendin’ you guys home empty-handed, either. You get a nice gift, and here’s what it is!” They receive Kung Fu Panda on DVD.

“These two teams will be playing for the right to enter the Temple, and they’re gonna do that right after this!” Kirk explains.

The camera pans along the front steps of the Temple and zooms in on the plant-covered black lights under Olmec as the title appears onscreen, and we fade to a commercial.

We return from the break and see Kirk standing in front of the Temple with one team on either side of him.

“Welcome back,” he says. “Now, this is the time when the fastest and the strongest prevail. But before that happens, let’s meet our two teams…

“On the Purple Parrots, we have Jenna; she plays softball and she wants to be a pediatrician when she gets older, and her partner is David; he told me he likes to surf and boogie-board, and he wants to be a comic book writer—let’s hear it for the Purple Parrots!” The audience claps for the auburn-haired girl and the tall black-haired boy.

“And over on the Red Jaguars, we have Kendra; she’s a cheerleader at her school and she wants to be a model, and her partner is Brandon; he likes to play football and he wants to work for NASA—how ‘bout a round of applause for the Red Jaguars?” The audience applauds for the cute red-haired girl and the tall brown-haired boy.

“All right, are you guys ready?” Kirk asks the teams.

“Yeah!” they reply.

“Okay, you guys go over there, and you girls go over there. Now, in the Temple Games, the teams are competing to win…” Kirk pulls a Pendant of Life from his pouch and holds it up to the camera. “…Pendants of Life. The winning team is gonna need Pendants like this to help protect them from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through Olmec’s Temple. There are three Temple Games. Olmec…will you tell us about Temple Game #1?”

“Sure thing, Sam,” Olmec replies in his “Casey Jones” voice. The black lights under Olmec come on and he begins to explain the game:

“One of the toughest jobs an engineer had to learn to do was grab a mailbag from a mail hook while the train was still in motion. You are about to see how difficult this can be. When Kirk gives the signal, jump up, grab a mailbag off the pedestal, come back and place it in your bin. Then run back, grab another mailbag and do it again. The player with the most successfully retrieved mailbags at the end of thirty seconds…wins.”

“Through rain and sleet, it must go through, they say,” says Kirk. “Let’s set the clock for thirty seconds!” The clock appears onscreen. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Jenna and Kendra both have some trouble getting used to the rotating lever, and neither one gets the mailbag on their first try. They get better about it as the game progresses, however, and the score looks fairly even when the game comes to an end.

“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk says as he runs back onscreen. “They had a little trouble there at first, but I’d say they got the hang of it. Let’s count it up and see how they did.” He kneels beside the bins. “Let’s see…the Red Jaguars got one, two, three, four bags of mail, and the Purple Parrots…they got one, two, three…they got four bags of mail, too! Both teams get the half Pendant of Life!” Kirk pauses to allow some applause. “We’re tied up now, but that can change in a hurry. The next Temple Game is worth a half Pendant, too—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2…”

Olmec begins:
“Casey Jones did not survive the train wreck that took his life, but fortunately, everyone else on the train did. You are about to help rescue some train wreck survivors. When Kirk gives the signal, grab your survivor and propel yourself up to the next level of the wreck site. Then continue up to the next level. When you reach the top, place the survivor in the safe zone. The first player to place their survivor in the safe zone or…the player that’s further along at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”

“Stand back! We’ve got some people to rescue here!” Kirk says. “Let’s put sixty seconds on the clock!” The clock appears, set for sixty seconds. “Okay…on your mark, get set, GO!”

David and Brandon have a little trouble trampolining themselves up to the second level of the vertical maze, but both eventually get it. David doesn’t progress any further; however, Brandon makes it all the way to the top and places the giant “survivor” doll with three seconds to spare.

“All right, that’s it!” Kirk exclaims as he runs back onscreen. “Both you guys come back down here…the Red Jaguars made it to the top first. That means the Red Jaguars get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds for a few seconds. “So now, the Red Jaguars are ahead one Pendant to the Purple Parrots’ half Pendant. Now it’s time for the third and final Game. It’s worth a full Pendant—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3…”

Olmec begins to explain the final Temple Game:
“Casey and his fellow engineers made many trips to and from Mississippi. The only difference between you and them is that you won’t be using cannonball trains—only cannonballs. Before you stands a wall with the names of four cities in Mississippi: Meridian, Senatobia, Vaughan and Jackson. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will shoot a cannonball up to their partner, who will then catch the ball and place it on the city there. Once a city is covered, move on to the next one. The first team to cover all four cities or…the team that’s further along at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”

“This is for the Temple,” Kirk says. “Let’s put sixty seconds on the clock!” The clock appears onscreen, all set to go. “Okay…ready, aim, FIRE!”

Both teams are pretty even on the first two towns, which they both get very quickly. The Purple Parrots have trouble getting the third town, allowing the Red Jaguars to pull ahead with about 12 seconds left. The Purple Parrots do eventually cover up “Vaughan”, but the Red Jaguars successfully cover up all four spots on the wall with two seconds left on the clock.

“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk exclaims as he runs onscreen. “Come down here, guys. The Red Jaguars successfully completed all four…towns, so that means the Red Jaguars get the full Pendant…that means the Red Jaguars have two Pendants, the Purple Parrots only have a half—the Red Jaguars are goin’ to the Temple!” Kendra claps as Brandon raises his arms in excitement. “Purple Parrots, come over here; you guys were great, too. You almost made it. You’re not goin’ home empty-handed. We’ve got a great gift for you guys, and here’s what that gift is!” They receive a custom-made Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth watch.

As the prize disappears off-screen, Kirk is seen standing beside the winning team. “Now we’ll see if the Red Jaguars can make it through Olmec’s Temple and retrieve the Lost Cap of Casey Jones, and we’ll see right after this!”

The camera pans in on the Temple and zooms in on the Lost Cap as the title appears onscreen, and we go to a commercial.

We return from the break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the winning team.

“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “Kendra and Brandon have proven themselves worthy and now have the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, Olmec’s gonna give ‘em some information to help them retrieve the Lost Cap of Casey Jones…”

Olmec begins to explain the layout as the camera gives us a first-person tour of the Temple:
“You could start…by running up the stairs to the Crypt! Grab the book from the skeletons, and pass into the Rope Labyrinth! Maneuver through the ropes, and climb into the Great Seal Room. Place the correct seal in the central holder, and a door may open into the Chamber…of the Sacred Markers. Match the symbols on the right to those on the left, and pass into the Safari Room. Push in the correct animal head and open the door to the SHRIIIINE of the Silver Monkey! Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room…of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the correct inscription and shout it out to open the door to the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage. Slide down the tunnel to the Dungeon, where you could smash through the wall into the Dark Forest…but beware of the Temple Guards that may inhabit the trees! Find the key in the tree, and you’ll enter…the Bamboo Forest! Maneuver through the thicket, and you’ll gain entry to the Tomb of the Headless Kings. Pull the vine to release the bones, and attach the missing skull to its proper king, then…crawl through the Labyrinth, climb through the Ledges, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone!” Olmec pauses. “You won 2 Pendants in the Temple Games. Who’s going first?”

“I am,” says Brandon, waving his hand in the air.

“Very well, Brandon,” Olmec replies. “When Kirk gives the signal, you’ll race through the gate into the Temple and make your way toward the Lost Cap. Hidden inside the Temple are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but—if you’re caught without a Pendant, you’ll be taken out of the Temple, and it’ll be Kendra’s turn to enter and try her luck. If you can reach the cap, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the gate with the Lost Cap of Casey Jones in three minutes, and you’ll both be handsomely rewarded—and here’s how!”

• Just for making it to the Temple, they’ll get a game table.
• If they can grab the Lost Cap within the time limit, they’ll also receive a Nintendo Wii, complete with two new games.
• And if they can bring the Lost Cap out of the Temple within three minutes, they’ll win a trip to Monterey, California.

“Monterey…let’s see if we can get ‘em there,” Kirk says. “All right, is everybody ready—oh, Kendra, what’s your strategy here?”

“Uh, just see how much he does, and then I’ll just retrace his steps and take the shortest path I can,” Kendra replies.

“Okay, sounds reasonable to me,” Kirk replies. “Everybody ready? Let’s get the mouthpieces in. Let’s set the clock for three minutes!” The clock appears onscreen with a bang.

“Olmec, please, lower your gate.” Olmec moans gutturally as the gate is lowered, and the black lights under him go out.

“All right—are you ready, Brandon?” Kirk asks.

“Yep,” Brandon says through his mouthpiece.

“All right—on your mark, get set, GO!”

Brandon dashes up the stairs, clutching his Pendant. He enters the Crypt and pulls all three books before opening the door to the Rope Labyrinth (2:50). Brandon enters the room and begins laboriously climbing through the ropes. He reaches the other side and hits the actuators for the Chamber of the Sacred Markers and the Great Seal Room, only the latter of which opens (2:29). “All right—into the Seal Room!” Kirk narrates. Brandon enters the room and immediately encounters the first TEMPLE GUARD (2:24)! “Oh, Temple Guard!” Kirk narrates. “That’s gonna cost him his Pendant!” Brandon hands over his Pendant after hesitating for a second or two. He then goes to the back of the room and retrieves one of the seals. He places it in the holder, but nothing happens (2:16). He goes back to retrieve a second seal, brings it back, and places it in the holder, but again, nothing happens (2:11). A third time, Brandon goes to the back of the room to get a seal. He brings it to the holder, places it, and the doors to both the Chamber of the Sacred Markers and the Safari Room open (2:06). Brandon decides to climb down into the Chamber, but as soon as he emerges in the room, the second TEMPLE GUARD grabs him (1:58).

“Oh, Temple Guard! Go, Kendra, go!” Kirk shouts. Kendra looks around, confused, before she takes off. She follows Brandon’s path exactly until she enters the Great Seal Room, where she notices the open door to the Safari Room, which she goes through (1:22). “She found another door he didn’t see!” narrates Kirk. “Let’s see if that’ll help ‘em in the long run!” Kendra enters the Safari Room, looks around for a few seconds, and pushes the lion’s head. Nothing happens, so she begins pushing every animal head in the room, opening the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey after she last pushes the rhino’s head (1:00). “She got it! Now into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey!” Kirk narrates. Kendra enters the room, where she immediately encounters the third TEMPLE GUARD (0:56). “Oh, there’s the third Temple Guard!” Kirk narrates. “Give him the Pendant, and that should be all of ‘em!” Kendra hands over her Pendant and goes to the back of the room to get a part of the monkey statue. She tries to put it on the pedestal, but she suddenly realizes that she got the middle of the statue by mistake (0:39). She rushes back to get the base, which she places on the pedestal (0:35). She then places the middle on it, and runs back to get the head. She jams down the head, opening the door to both the Room of the Secret Password and the Dark Forest (0:20). Kendra decides to go down, prompting surprised reactions from Kirk and Brandon, the latter who is shown in a camera shot saying, “Where’d you go?” “She’s gone!” Kirk narrates. “Where is she?” Kendra enters the Dark Forest (0:13). “Oh, there she is—in the Dark Forest!” Kirk narrates. “I thought a Temple Guard had gotten her for a second!” Kendra reaches into the stage-left tree to look for a key, but comes out empty-handed (0:09). She reaches into the stage-right tree, but again, she comes out empty-handed. Time runs out soon afterward.

“Oh, they ran out of time!” Kirk says. “She couldn’t find the key to get to the…Bamboo Forest, and she couldn’t go any further! That’s okay, though—they still get the game table, and their dignity’s still there. We gotta get out of here, so we’ll see ya next time. But remember: it’s not just Legends…it’s Legends: Rebirth! Buh-bye, everybody!”

Kendra emerges from the Temple, and Kirk stands behind her and Brandon with his hands on their shoulders, and they all wave to the crowd as the credits roll.

The Lost Cap of Casey Jones
Season 1, Layout 1
Artifact Location
: The Tomb of the Headless Kings
Team: Red Jaguars (Kendra Robinson & Brandon Chastain)
Pendants: 2
Result: Ran out of time

There’s not much to say about this episode—it’s a typical loss. But if I’d have to put the blame on somebody for this team’s loss, I’d pin it on Brandon.

Brandon wasn’t that fast, but he knew what he was doing. However, he made two mistakes that probably cost his team the win. Number one: he retrieved the seals one at a time in the Great Seal Room. If he’d have gotten all four at once, it might have saved him a little time. Number two (and this is the big one): he failed to notice that the door to the Safari Room had opened when he exited the Great Seal Room, where there wasn’t a Temple Guard, and the path to the artifact would have been a little shorter. If he’d have taken this route, he could have achieved a solo victory. Instead, he went down into the Chamber of the Sacred Markers, where he was removed by an oddly placed Temple Guard with 1:58 left.

Fortunately, Kendra was a smarter player than Brandon. She did notice the open door to the Safari Room, and that’s why she progressed as far as she did. She made a mistake in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey by bringing back the middle of the statue instead of the base first, and that’s probably the reason she didn’t reach the Lost Cap. Time ran out on her in the Dark Forest. This run wasn’t particularly difficult—a slow-witted player was mostly to blame for this team’s loss.

Rating: 5.5 out of 10

Notes and Trivia: This is the second time since the renewal of Legends that the Red Jaguars and Purple Parrots face off in the Temple Games, and also the second time that the Red Jaguars win.

As Brandon enters the Chamber of the Sacred Markers, he is caught by a Temple Guard hidden inside the room. This is the first time I can recall that a Temple Guard in this room is not hidden behind the door to the ladder.

Heheh, it's just too bad production screwed them over... No key in the Dark Forest.

Pretty good job!
