The pendant splits, the camera zooms out from an animal skull lying on top of a pile rocks, near the front of the Secret Spring, and then we fade to Kirk and the two teams.
“Welcome back to Legends,” says Kirk, standing in front of The Vine Drop with the two remaining teams. “Now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest… so before we get started, let’s meet our teams. On the Green Monkeys, we have Angelique. You like baseball, it says here, but tell me about your trip to the Amazon.”
“Uh, yeah,” says the black girl with long black hair in braids. “We were going down the Amazon River in a boat, and suddenly, I fell out.” She laughs.
“So what happened?” Kirk then asks.
“Uh, they pulled me in quickly,” she replies.
“ ‘Kay, glad the piranhas didn’t come,” says Kirk in response, turning to Angelique’s partner, a boy with tanned skin, dark brown hair, and eyes of the same color. “And also, from Barcelona in Spain, we have Diego. First of all, welcome to Los Angeles!”
“Thanks,” says Diego, in a slight Spanish accent.
“Okay,” continues Kirk. “It says here that you like swimming and going to the beach—tell me about that.”
“Well,” explains Diego, “I just go beach on week… ends, mostly. The Bar-the-lonita. Ees close to de cee-ty.”
“Sounds like fun to me,” remarks Kirk. “Let’s hear it for the Green Monkeys!” The audience cheers and claps momentarily for the Green Monkeys, while Kirk moves on to interview the girl on the Purple Parrots—pale-skinned, with blond hair reaching about a fourth of the way down her back.
“And also,” continues Kirk, “on the Purple Parrots, we have Kara. You say you like photography and that you own over 20 cameras, is that right?”
“Uh, yeah,” says Kara. “I got my first camera when I was eight years old, and I started taking a photography course when I was 11.”
“And what’s your favorite camera?” asks Kirk.
“It’s a Nikon,” she says.
“Okay, sounds cool,” comments Kirk, turning to the last player, a boy with short brown hair and equally brown eyes. “And over here, we have Zack. Zack, you tell me that you like to sketch—what do you usually sketch?”
“Um, just anything, really,” he laughs.
“Do you have a favorite thing that you’ve sketched so far?’ asks Kirk.
“Uh, yeah, I once drew a, uh, silhouette of the New York skyline,” says Zack.
“All right, we’ve got a talented team over here!” announces Kirk. “Let’s hear it for the Purple Parrots!” The audience once again cheers, this time for the Purple Parrots.
“Okay, why don’t you girls head over there for the first Temple Games,” Kirk then says, pointing to the left of the screen, “and you boys head over there for the second—I’ll explain what’s gonna happen.” The teams walk off in different directions before Kirk turns back to face the camera.
“In the temple games, teams are competing to win Pendants of Life—” Kirk grabs a pendant out of his pouch and holds it up to the camera. “The winning team will need those pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards, as they make their way through the temple. There are three Temple Games, so Olmec—please tell us about Temple Game #1.”
Olmec explains:
“During World War II, territories were being conquered here and there. Today, you will be expanding your own empire by conquering the cities we’ve laid out for you. Before you is a path through four city walls. When Kirk gives the signal, run through the first wall, and plant one of your flags to show that you have conquered the city. Then go back, grab another flag, and do it again. The first team to conquer all four cities, or the player that’s further along at the end of 60 seconds… wins.”
“Four cities and a half-pendant on the line,” says Kirk. “Let’s put 60 seconds on the clock!”
The clock crashes down into the corner of the screen. “On your marks, get set… GO!” The girls dart forward down the path, the first walls for each team crashing down at about the same time. [0:54] “This is gonna be a close race, all the way,” comments Kirk, as the camera shows Kara racing back to her supply of flags at the start. “The Purple Parrots have a bit of a lead,” narrates Kirk, as Angelique heads out towards her second wall, breaking it down with 41 seconds remaining—but Kara is already turning around. “Woah, Purple Parrots are moving fast!” Indeed, Kara grabs a third flag with 36 seconds remaining, and then runs towards the third wall, breaking it down with her shoulder. [0:29] Angelique also breaks down the third wall just behind her opponent, but has trouble heading back to the beginning. “Oh, it looks like the Purple Parrots may do it…” commentates Kirk, as Kara races towards the fourth wall. [0:22] She breaks it down, steps over the rubble, and plants her last flag into the flag-holder to end the game with 17 seconds remaining!
“All right, that’s it!” shouts Kirk, running over to Kara’s now-broken-down fourth wall. “Stop right there—come on down here, girls… Nice job! Well, uh, Kara here got all four walls down and all four flags planted—that gives the Purple Parrots the half Pendant of Life!” Kara pumps a fist in the air in celebration as the audience applauds.
“The Green Monkeys can catch up in the next game,” explains Kirk. “It’s also worth a half-a-Pendant. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2.”
Olmec narrates:
“George Marshall and his army often had to live for weeks in the wilderness, and they couldn’t have survived without food or water. On the pedestal is a ton of water, all reserved for his army. When Kirk gives the signal, run around, jump up, and grab a bottle of water. Then, spin around to the other side and drop it in your bin. The first player that collects all eight water bottles, or the team that collects the most water bottles at the end of 60 seconds… wins.
“Let’s get that water down to the troops,” remarks Kirk. “Let’s set the clock for 60 seconds!”
The clock slams down into the corner of the screen. “On your marks, get set… GO!” Both players begin to run towards the pedestal, both missing the pedestal on their first spin. “It takes awhile to get the momentum,” explains Kirk, “but once they’ve got it, they can start to grab those water bottles!” Diego is first to grab a water bottle, spinning back around to drop it into his basket. [0:47] “Alright, the Green Monkeys’ve got the hang of it,” narrates Kirk. “The Purple Parrots still looking to score—now they’ve got their first bottle!” As Zack drops his first water bottle in his basket, Diego spins around, grabbing a third bottle soon after. He runs back around and drops it in his basket to bring the score up to 3-1. “Oh no, Purple Parrots missed!” shouts Kirk, as Zack knocks a bottle of water onto the ground. [0:30] The score is now 5-2 Green, with Diego showing no sign of slowing down. “Oh, Green Monkeys doing a great job,” says Kirk. Diego finally misses one, jumping up too early. “Oh, but they missed! That gives the Purple Parrots a chance to catch up!” With 15 seconds left, Zack finally drops a third water bottle into his basket, but the Green Monkeys increase their score to six. The audience soon begins to count down: “Ten… nine… eight…” [0:05] Diego drops another water bottle into his bin, but not before Zack manages to do the same—but TIME RUNS OUT shortly after!
“All right, stop the spinning… levers…” instructs Kirk as he runs over to the spotters with the scorecards. “Let’s get our players down… easy does it… and let’s count up the scores.”
He bends down to peer at the scorecards. “Well, the Green Monkeys got seven bottles of water… and the Purple Parrots got four bottles of water—the Green Monkeys get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience cheers as Diego and Zack high-five each other.
“Nice sportsmanship, there,” comments Kirk. “So now our teams each have a half-pendant. We’re going into our third and final game—it’s worth a full Pendant. Olmec, tell us about it.”
Olmec continues:
“Soldiers must be trained for almost any kind of situation, either on courses, or in the wild. Today, you will be training with a little bit of both. Before you is a path through four areas: a hill… a lake… a jungle… and finally, a tower. When Kirk gives the signal, the first player will complete the first obstacle and tag their partner at the end of it. Then the next player will complete the next obstacle and do it again. When you reach the Tower, both of you, climb to the top, and hit the gong. The first team to complete the course and hit their gong… wins.”
“They’re training for Olmec’s Temple,” reminds Kirk. “All right, in position, players… On your marks, get set… GO!”
The boys immediately spring into action, climbing their way up the rock wall on one side of the Hill. “This is gonna take a lot of endurance and speed to get through this course,” comments Kirk. “It’s a tough, tough course.” Zack is first to make it to the top of the Hill, sliding down the other side of it quickly and tagging Kara. “Purple Parrots off with an early lead,” commentates Kirk, as Diego slides down the Hill and tags Angelique. “But the Green Monkeys are catching up quickly,” says Kirk. We see Kara already splashing her way across the Lake, but Angelique dives in and begins to swim through the Lake, quickly catching up. “Oh, they’re splashing all over the place! The Green Monkeys’re making a good comeback…” Angelique is now right on Kara’s tail, and as they both tag their partners—at virtually the same time—they both run out of view of the camera. “Now they’re heading into the Jungle!” shouts Kirk, as we see the boys enter the mess of elastic cords. Zack ends up getting tangled up in the cords, trying to walk through the Jungle and getting stuck, while Diego pushes himself through the cords, crawling his way through the Jungle instead. “Oh, nice move by Diego—he’s taking the lead!” Diego is out of the Jungle first, far ahead of his opponents, and we switch to a wide shot of both Towers, with the Green Monkeys making their way up theirs. “Oh, the Purple Parrots are gonna have to catch up quickly!” But it’s too late for that—the Green Monkeys reach the top of their Tower right as the Green Monkeys make it to the base of theirs, and they hit their gong to end the game!
“That’s it!” announces Kirk, running over to the base of the Towers. “Great job! Come over here, Purple Parrots… Well, the Green Monkeys did make it to the top first, so that gives them the full Pendant of Life—” Kirk is interrupted briefly by the audience applause, but quickly continues.
“That gives them a Pendant and a half,” concludes Kirk. “The Purple Parrots had a half. The Green Monkeys are going to the Temple!” We cut to a shot of Diego and Angelique celebrating on the top of their Tower, hugging and giving each other a high-five.
“Great job by them!” shouts Kirk. “The Purple Parrots here gave it a great effort—it was a closely-fought match. We’re not gonna let them go away empty-handed. We’ve got a great gift for ‘em—here’s what it is!”
Dee reads the prize:
“It’s a $100 savings bond from Skechers Footwear. Makers of fun, exciting, cool shoes, sneakers, and boots. Skechers—it’s the ‘S’!”
The screen wipes to reveal Kirk and the Green Monkeys, who are now standing between the two Towers. “Now we’re gonna see if the Green Monkeys can make it through Olmec’s Temple,” he says, “retrieve The Badge of George Marshall—right after this!” The camera heads between the Towers, through a wall of tropical shrubs, and then stops right before plunging into the Moat. The titlecard appears, and then we fade to commercial.
