We return from the break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the two remaining teams.
“Welcome back,” he says. “Now, of course, the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest…
“So let’s hear it for Tommy and Michelle of the Green Monkeys!” The audience claps for the tall brown-eyed girl with jet-black hair and the equally tall blue-eyed boy with curly brown hair.
“And Sammy and Vanessa of the Silver Snakes!” The audience claps for the Hispanic girl with long brown hair tied back in a scrunchie and the tall brown-eyed boy with dirty-blond hair.
“All right, you guys, are you ready to play?” Kirk asks.
“Yeah!” they loudly reply.
“All right—go get ready for the Temple Games,” Kirk says. “Now, in the Temple Games, our teams are competing for…” Kirk retrieves a Pendant of Life from his pouch and holds it up to the camera. “…Pendants of Life. Our winning team is gonna need Pendants just like this one to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through the Temple. There are three Temple Games—Olmec, please tell us about the first one…”
“Leave it all to me,” Olmec replies. The black lights under him come on as he begins to explain the first Game:
“When Angela Merici became frustrated with the men who broke into the school, she tore her veil in half and threw it on the ground. In this game, you are about to give Angela four new veils to replace her torn one. When Kirk gives the signal, run out, grab a veil, come back and place it on one of your four busts. Then run back out and grab another veil. Along the way, you must avoid the swinging obstacles. The first player to get all four veils, or…the team with the most veils at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”
“Okay, looks like we’re getting some veils here,” Kirk remarks. “Let’s get started—set the clock for thirty—no, sixty seconds!” The clock slams down in the bottom right-hand corner, set for the correct time. “On your mark, get set, GO!”
Michelle and Vanessa each run out, grab the first veil, bring it back and place it on their first stone head without getting hit. With some planning, Vanessa manages to get her second veil, but Michelle is hit trying to get hers. As Vanessa rushes out to get her third veil, she is hit, allowing Michelle to get her second veil and tie the game up with 40 seconds left. Michelle runs out to get the third veil, but gets hit trying to bring it back. Vanessa waits for the sandbags to swing by her before she progresses, allowing her to make it back with her third veil with 22 seconds left. Michelle manages to retrieve her third veil and bring it back a few seconds later, but by this time, Vanessa is almost halfway out to get her final veil. Michelle somehow makes it to her fourth veil with only five seconds left. A last-second dash to get the veils back in time proves futile for both girls, as they both get hit by a sandbag. Time expires very soon afterwards.
“Oh, that’s it!” Kirk shouts as he rushes back onscreen. “Come on over here—they made a mad dash there at the end, but they both couldn’t make it back in time. So both teams got three veils; that means both teams get the half Pendant of Life!” Kirk pauses to allow the audience to applaud. “Don’t worry, because the tie might be broken in this next Temple Game. It’s also worth a half Pendant—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2…”
Olmec begins:
“After she converted her own home into a school for girls, Angela taught many subjects that are now considered commonplace for any education. Before you stands a maze with numerous compartments. Inside each compartment is a textbook on a certain subject. Your task is to obtain four history textbooks. When Kirk gives the signal, crawl into the maze and pop up in one of the compartments. If the book you find is a history book, come back and place it in your bin; otherwise, take the book and pop up in another compartment. Then, exchange the book you have for the book in the compartment, and keep searching. The first player to retrieve all four history books, or…the player with the most history books at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”
“I know the school needs textbooks, but this is just ridiculous,” Kirk jokes. “Let’s set the clock for sixty seconds!” The clock slams down in the corner, ready to go. “On your mark, get set, GO!”
Sammy and Tommy rush into the maze and pop up in a compartment. Tommy finds a history book right off the bat and rushes back to place it in his bin, but Sammy finds a book marked “English”, so he takes it and pops back down in the maze. Sammy finds a book marked “Art”, but he places both books in the cubbyhole by mistake, and goes back down in the maze empty-handed. Sammy comes up and finds a history book at the same time Tommy does, and they both bring it back to their bins with about 30 seconds to go. Sammy gets lucky and finds another history book in the first compartment he emerges in next, tying up the game 2-2 with 24 seconds left. Sammy gets confused when he comes up in the same spot he placed two books in a second time, allowing Tommy to take the lead with 10 seconds left. No one finds anything else before time expires.
“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk says as he appears back onscreen. “Silver Snakes got a little confused in the maze there—let’s get the bins and see how each team did.” A spotter brings the bins over as Kirk kneels beside them and begins to count. “Green Monkeys got one, two, three books—they’re all marked ‘History’. And the Silver Snakes got…one, two books! The Green Monkeys get the half Pendant of Life!” Kirk pauses to allow applause. “So now, the Green Monkeys are ahead, one Pendant to a half Pendant. But now, it’s time for the third and final Temple Game, worth a full Pendant of Life. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3…”
Olmec begins to explain the final Game:
“When the men left the school and officially accepted Angela Merici’s philosophies, they gave Angela enough money to build a proper school so she could stop holding it in her house. However, they had to clear out a large quarry to build it—just like you’re about to do. When Kirk gives the signal, grab a boulder and toss it above your head. Then, your partner will catch the boulder as it rolls down and then place it in your bin. The first team to clear all their boulders, or…the team with the most boulders at the end of sixty seconds wins!”
“This one is for the Temple,” Kirk explains. “Let’s put sixty seconds on the clock!” The clock slams down in the bottom corner, ready to go. “On your mark, get set, GO!”
This game remains pretty even all the way through—the Green Monkeys score first, and the Silver Snakes get a boulder in their bin just a second or two later. About halfway through the game, the Green Monkeys fail to catch one of their boulders, allowing the Silver Snakes to pull ahead. When 15 seconds remain, the Silver Snakes miss a boulder, and the Green Monkeys tie it up. With only five seconds left, the Green Monkeys miss a boulder, and the Silver Snakes pull ahead again just before time expires.
“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk shouts. “Come here, you guys—we had rocks flying everywhere in that one, didn’t we? Let’s count ‘em up and see how we did here…looks like the Green Monkeys got one, two, three, four, five boulders. And the Silver Snakes…they got one, two, three, four, five, six boulders! That gives the Silver Snakes the full Pendant, so they’ve got a Pendant and a half; the Green Monkeys just have one—the Silver Snakes are goin’ to the Temple!” Sammy and Vanessa, still strapped to the apparatus, applaud excitedly. “Green Monkeys, you guys were a great team, too—it was a close match. We’ve got a great gift for you guys, and here’s what it is!” They receive a backpack from Outdoor Products.
As the prize disappears off-screen, Kirk is seen standing beside the now-unstrapped winning team. “Now it’s time to see if the Silver Snakes can make it through Olmec’s Temple; retrieve the Torn Veil of Angela Merici, right after this!”
The camera pans in on the Temple and zooms in on one of the skeleton’s skulls in the Crypt as the title appears onscreen, and we go to a commercial.
