Episode 25: The Petrified Sandal of Pygmalion

The camera winds and twists its way through a thick jungle of strange and exotic plants. After a few wrong turns, it finally stops in front of an ancient Mayan temple. At the base of the temple, a giant stone head sits. Suddenly, the head’s eyes light up and it begins to speak:

“Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth!” These words appear on the screen. “With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is now!”

A middle-aged man wearing a denim shirt and blue jeans swings in on a rope. He drops down and runs up the Steps of Knowledge, microphone in hand.

“Thank you! Thank you, everybody! Nice to see everyone again! It’s good to see you again, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth. The rooms are filled with lost treasures protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legends behind each of these newly discovered treasures in his temple…which one are we gonna hear about today, Olmec?”

“The legend of the Petrified Sandal of Pygmalion,” Olmec replies.

“Ooh, the Petrified Sandal of Pygmalion,” Kirk repeats. “Well, the legend is set, and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the petrified sandal—will it be:

“The Red Jaguars?” The camera zooms in on each team as they are introduced.
“The Blue Barracudas?
“The Green Monkeys?
“The Orange Iguanas?
“The Purple Parrots?
“Or the Silver Snakes?

“They’ll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests, but in the end, only one will earn the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, they have to cross the Moat, and Olmec’s gonna tell us how they’ll have to do it today…”

Olmec begins to explain the Moat Crossing:
“Before you, a line of stepping stones extends across the Moat. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will begin walking across the stones to the other side. Once they’re safely across, their partner will cross in the same way. But be sure to step on only the black stones—if you step on a white stone, it will sink, and if you touch the water, you’ll have to go back and start again. Once both players reach the other side, run over and hit the gong.” Kirk hits the Silver Snakes’ gong to demonstrate. “The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round!”

“All right, let’s get started,” says Kirk. “Teams, are you ready?”
The six teams scream and cheer in response.
“Olmec, are you ready?” asks Kirk.
“Let’s rock,” Olmec replies.
“On your mark,” says Kirk, “get set, GO!”

“There they go!” Kirk shouts as all six teams’ first members rush out onto the floating stones. The Blue Barracudas’ girl, Purple Parrots’ boy and Green Monkeys’ boy all slip off the stones and fall in the water, and are sent back. The Red Jaguars’ boy steps on a white stone, and it immediately sinks into the water, pulling him down with it, and the spotters tell him to go back. Only the Silver Snakes’ boy and the Orange Iguanas’ girl make it across on their first try. The Green Monkeys’ boy makes it across on his second try, as does the Red Jaguars’ boy, but the Purple Parrots’ boy falls in again, and the Blue Barracudas’ girl steps on a white stone, prompting them both to be sent back. The Green Monkeys’ girl crosses without falling in, and she and her partner become the first team to hit the gong. People are falling in left and right—except the Red Jaguars’ boy, who makes it across on his fourth try, and the Silver Snakes’ girl, who is seen slamming down on her team’s gong. “We’ve got two teams—we need two more!” Kirk explains. The Blue Barracudas’ girl finally gets across, and so does the Orange Iguanas’ boy, and he hits his team’s gong, which lights up a bright orange. “Oh, there’s the Orange Iguanas! We need one more team!” Kirk exclaims. The Red Jaguars’ girl makes it across without slipping or stepping on a white stone, and she is helped onto the dock by her partner and a spotter. She slams down on her team’s gong, hitting it numerous times for good measure.

“That’s it!” Kirk shouts as he runs to stand beside the Silver Snakes. “That is it! It was really close, but as you know, there’s only room for four teams, and goin’ on to the Steps of Knowledge are the Silver Snakes…and the Orange Iguanas,” Kirk pauses between each team’s name to allow the audience to applaud for them. “And the Green Monkeys, and the Red Jaguars! The Blue Barracudas and the Purple Parrots gave it a great effort, too, and they’re not going home empty-handed—we’ve got a great gift for ‘em, and here’s what it is!” They receive a $50 gift certificate from GameStop.

Kirk and the remaining four teams are now standing atop the Steps of Knowledge. “As the quest continues, it’s now time for Olmec to tell us about the Petrified Sandal of Pygmalion. But teams, pay attention, because your knowledge of the legend can help bring you a step closer to Olmec’s Temple…”

Olmec begins to tell the story:
“One of the greatest artists in Roman history was the mythological sculptor Pygmalion. A native of the island of Cyprus, Pygmalion hated women, and resolved never to marry. However, he worked tirelessly on his masterpiece: a life-sized sculpture of a beautiful woman. Working day and night, he meticulously carved every detail, making sure that everything was perfect. However, it may have been too perfect. Legend has it that the statue was so lifelike, Pygmalion actually fell in love with it.
“‘Great Jupiter, she’s beautiful,’ he said. ‘If only she were real…’
“The natives of Cyprus all thought Pygmalion was insane, and taunted him constantly.
“‘He’s gone off the deep end,’ said one man.
“‘He should be locked up with that silly statue of his!’ said another.
“But Pygmalion didn’t care. Miserable because the statue wouldn’t respond to him, he prayed to the Roman gods to do something about it.
“‘Please,’ he begged, ‘just let her feel the same way I feel about her!’
“Suddenly, the Roman goddess of love, Venus, appeared before him.
“‘Ay-yi-yi,’ the goddess said. ‘If it’ll getcha off our backs, I’ll make your stupid statue real! Just leave us alone already!’
“In a flash of light, the rock likeness of the statue melted away, and the beautiful statue that Pygmalion had created came to life. The only parts that remained petrified were the statue’s sandals.
“‘Hi, I’m Galatea,’ said the ex-statue. ‘You’re cute…’
“‘Really?’ replied Pygmalion.
“Pygmalion and Galatea married, and eventually had a son, Paphos, who went on to found the sacred city of Venus. Galatea’s sandals, however, disappeared—but one has somehow found its way to the Temple. Your quest is to find the Petrified Sandal of Pygmalion and bring it back here.”

“Thank you, Olmec,” says Kirk. “So tell us, where is…the sandal?”

“The Petrified Sandal of Pygmalion can be found in the SHRIIINE of the Silver Monkey,” Olmec replies. The camera zooms in on the sandal on the leftmost shelf in the room before fading back to Kirk.

“Easy, now,” Kirk replies, chuckling. “Okay, teams, you’re now standing on the Steps of Knowledge. In a minute, Olmec’s gonna ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, I want you to stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you. If you’re right, you’re gonna make—move down to the next level, but if you’re wrong or run out of time, I’m gonna give the other teams a chance to answer.” Kirk begins descending the Steps. “The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec’s Temple. Olmec…we’re ready for your first question.”

Olmec begins:
“Was Pygmalion: a painter, a sculptor, or—”
The Orange Iguanas ring in. “A sculptor!”
“That…is correct,” Olmec replies. The Orange Iguanas step to the second level.
“Orange Iguanas are first to score,” Kirk narrates. “Next question, Olmec.”

“What island did Pygmalion live on: Crete, Sicily, or Cyprus?”
The Silver Snakes ring in about a second after the last choice is given. “Cyprus?”
“That is correct,” Olmec booms. The Silver Snakes join the Orange Iguanas on the second step.
“Silver Snakes step down now,” Kirk says. “Next question.”

“Why did Pygmalion vow never to marry: he couldn’t have children—”
The Green Monkeys ring in early. “Uh…he…hated women?”
“That…is correct,” Olmec replies. The Green Monkeys step to the second step.
“Now the Green Monkeys can step down,” Kirk says. “Anybody’s game now…next question, Olmec.”

“Was the statue’s name: Athena, Galatea, or Pandora?”
The Silver Snakes ring in. “Gala-day-a?”
“That…is correct,” Olmec responds. The Silver Snakes advance to the next-to-last step.
“And now, the Silver Snakes are just one step away!” Kirk exclaims. “But remember, we need two teams—next question.”

“What Greek god did Pygmalion pray to: Jupiter, Venus, or Neptune?”
The Green Monkeys ring in. “Venus!”
“That is correct,” Olmec assures. The Green Monkeys join the Silver Snakes on the penultimate step.
“Now the Green Monkeys are just one step away,” Kirk observes. “Still need two teams—Olmec, continue.”

“Was Venus the goddess of: wealth, love—”
The Silver Snakes ring in. “Love!” the girl confidently shouts.
“That…is CORRECT!” Olmec booms.
“The Silver Snakes are our first team for the Temple Games!” Kirk shouts as the Silver Snakes step to the bottom and high-five one another. “But we need one more team. Who’s it gonna be: the Red Jaguars, the Green Monkeys, or the Orange Iguanas? Olmec, next question, please.”

“Pygmalion and Galatea eventually married and had a son. Was his name: Pathos, Paphos, or Porthos?”
The Orange Iguanas ring in. “Pathos?”
“Incorrect,” Olmec replies.
The Green Monkeys ring in and guess. “Pay-phos?”
“That…is correct!” Olmec booms. The Green Monkeys enthusiastically leap to the bottom step.

“We’ve got our two teams for the Temple Games!” Kirk shouts as he rushes over to stand between the two advancing teams. “It’s the Green Monkeys, and the Silver Snakes! Nice work, guys! Red Jaguars and Orange Iguanas, you guys did a nice job, too; come on down here. We’ve got a great gift for these two teams for playing, and here’s what it is!” They receive Up on DVD.

Kirk is now standing on the bottom step between the Green Monkeys and the Silver Snakes. “These two teams are gonna be going head-to-head in the Temple Games, and they’ll do it right after this!”

The camera pans to the right and zooms in on the tiebreaker pedestal. We see what appears to be a giant wheel in the background as well as the title appears onscreen, and we fade to a commercial.

We return from the break and see Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the two remaining teams.

“Welcome back,” he says. “Now, of course, the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest. But before we get started, let’s meet our two teams.

“On the Green Monkeys, we have Shauna: she likes to play softball and she also wants to be a pediatrician, and her partner, Josh, plays basketball and he also likes to draw—let’s hear it for the Green Monkeys!” The audience claps for the short African-American girl with short, nappy-black hair and the taller brown-haired boy with bright blue eyes and freckles.

“And over on the Silver Snakes, we have Abby: she plays soccer and she also collects china dolls, and her partner is Ryan—he likes rock-climbing, and he’s also a yellow belt in tae kwon do—how ‘bout a hand for the Silver Snakes!” The audience applauds for the average-height girl with stringy shoulder-length black hair and glasses and the slightly taller boy with black hair and green eyes.

“All right—are you all ready?” Kirk asks.

“Yeah!” the teams respond.

“Okay, then—guys, you go get ready for the first Temple Game; girls, you go over there and get ready for the second Game. Now, in these Temple Games, our teams are trying to win…” Kirk pulls a Pendant of Life from his pouch and holds it up to the camera. “…these Pendants of Life. The winning team is gonna need those Pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through Olmec’s Temple. There are three Temple Games—Olmec, tell us about the first one, please…”

“Got it,” Olmec replies. The black lights under Olmec come on and he begins to explain the first Game:

“Like most sculptors, Pygmalion started off with raw materials, like clay or stone, to make a statue. In this game, you will be gathering clay. When Kirk gives the signal, run around, grab a piece of clay, come back around and place it in your bin. Then run back around, grab another piece and do it again. The first player to gather all their clay or…the player with the most clay at the end of thirty seconds…wins.”

“We’ve gotta gather some clay, so let’s put thirty seconds on the clock!” Kirk says. The clock appears in the bottom corner set for the correct time. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Josh and Ryan each have a little trouble jumping high enough with the rotating levers to grab the lumps of clay (which are colored green and gray to match the teams’ colors), but Josh eventually gets a better rhythm, dropping several lumps of clay in his bin before Ryan can even get one in his. Ryan tries to catch up toward the end, but it looks like Josh has slightly more clay when the clock runs out.

“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk shouts as he runs back onscreen. “Come on over here, guys…so we can count it up.” Kirk kneels beside the bins. “Looks like the Green Monkeys got…one, two, three, four, five, six pieces of clay, and the Silver Snakes…I don’t know, it looks pretty even. The Silver Snakes got one, two, three, four…five pieces of clay! The Green Monkeys get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds for a few seconds. “The Silver Snakes are behind for now, but they can catch up in the next Temple Game. It’s also worth a half Pendant. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2…”

Olmec begins:
“When the locals of Cyprus discovered that Pygmalion had fallen in love with a statue, they took some of the sculptures he had previously made and destroyed them. In this game, you will also be destroying some sculptures. When Kirk gives the signal, roll toward the first statue at the far end of the course, climb out of your wheel, and smash it. Then roll back to your starting position, climb out and smash the second statue. Finally, roll to the middle of the course and smash the third statue. The first player to smash all three statues, or…the player who’s further along at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”

“Just so you know, we’re not promoting vandalism,” Kirk says. “Let’s put thirty—excuse me, sixty seconds on the clock!” The clock slams down in the corner, ready to go. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Shauna and Abby each begin rolling their giant hollow wheel toward the far end of their predetermined path. Abby reaches the end of the path first, climbs out, and breaks the statue there on the platform with about 44 seconds left on the clock. Shauna is right behind her, breaking her first statue with 41 seconds left. Abby begins rolling back to her starting point, but she has a little trouble gathering enough momentum to make it over the hump in the middle of the course, allowing Shauna to take a slight lead and reach the starting point. She climbs out and smashes the second statue with 25 seconds to go. Abby reaches the starting point, climbs out, and smashes her second statue with 18 seconds on the clock. Shauna rolls her wheel to the middle of the path and climbs out. Abby makes a mad dash with her wheel toward the end, but Shauna smashes her third and final statue with 6 seconds to spare.

“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk shouts as he rushes over and stands beside Shauna. Abby climbs out of her wheel and appears on his other side soon afterward. “The Green Monkeys smashed all three of their statues first, so the Green Monkeys get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds briefly. “So now, the Green Monkeys are ahead, one Pendant to nothing. But now, it’s time for the third and final Temple Game. It’s worth a full Pendant of Life. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3…”

Olmec begins to explain the final Game:
“As a token of thanks to Venus, Pygmalion and Galatea’s son Paphos founded the sacred city of Venus—but first, he had to excavate the rock quarry that had stood there for over 100 years. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will grab a boulder and toss it over their head. Then, their partner will catch the boulder as it rolls down and place it in their team’s bin. The team who collects the most boulders at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”

“This is for the Temple,” Kirk explains. “Set the clock for sixty seconds!” The clock slams down in the corner with a loud gong. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Both teams’ male members are good about hitting the chute with their colored boulders, but the female members have a little trouble catching the boulders as they roll down. Eventually, though, both teams get the hang of it. Abby catches two boulders before Shauna finally manages to catch one with 40 seconds left. Abby misses her next boulder, allowing Shauna to tie it up with 35 seconds left. Neither Abby nor Shauna misses a boulder until about 12 seconds remain, when Shauna can’t reach her bungee cord out far enough to catch one that rolls down. This allows the Silver Snakes to pull slightly ahead, a lead they maintain up until time expires.

“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk shouts as he makes his way back onscreen. “Stop throwing the boulders, guys; let’s see how we did here.” The spotters wheel the bins over to Kirk, and he begins to count the boulders. “Let’s see…the Green Monkeys got one, two, three, four, five boulders! And the Silver Snakes, they got…one, two, three, four, five…six boulders! The Silver Snakes win the full Pendant…that means the Green Monkeys have one Pendant; the Silver Snakes also have one Pendant—we’ve got a tie! Let’s bring in the tiebreaker pedestal!”

A spotter wheels in the tiebreaker pedestal, and the two teams position themselves behind it. Kirk stands beside the pedestal and begins to explain the rules.

“Okay, teams, here’s what’s gonna happen. In a minute, Olmec’s gonna ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, I want you to hit the gong in front of you. You’ll have three seconds to answer, and I must expect—accept your first answer. The first team to ring in and answer correctly will be going inside the Temple in search of the Petrified Sandal. All clear?” The teams nod in response. “Okay,” Kirk affirms as he turns his head toward Olmec. “Olmec…what is your final question?”

Olmec begins to ask the final question of the day:
“Which Greek goddess was the counterpart of the Romans’ Venus: Athena, Aphrodite, or Apollo?”

The Silver Snakes ring in. “Aphrodite,” Abby answers.

“…That is correct!” Olmec booms after a few seconds of silence.

“That’s it!” says Kirk as Abby and Ryan high-ten one another. “The Silver Snakes are goin’ to the Temple! Green Monkeys, you guys did great, too—it came down to the wire with a tiebreaker. We’ve got a great gift for you guys, and here’s what it is!” They receive Skechers Airators shoes.

As the prize disappears off-screen, Kirk is seen standing beside Ryan and Abby. “Now it’s time to see if the Silver Snakes can make it through the Temple and retrieve the Petrified Sandal of Pygmalion, right after this!”

The camera pans in on the Temple and zooms in on the Petrified Sandal as the title appears onscreen, and we fade to a commercial.

We return from the break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the winning team.

“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he welcomes us. “The Silver Snakes have proven themselves worthy, and now they’ve earned the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But before that happens, Olmec’s gonna give them some information to help them retrieve the Petrified Sandal of Pygmalion…”

Olmec begins to explain the Temple layout as the camera gives us a first-person walkthrough of the Temple:
“You could start…by running up the stairs to the Crypt! Grab the book from the skeletons, and pass into the Bottomless Pit! Swing across the gap, and climb into the Lunar Landing. Align the puzzle on the satellite, and a door may open into the Clockwork Room. Set the clocks for the correct time, and pass into the Room…of the Mystical Keys! Reach into the compartments to find the two correct keys, and open the door to the SHRIIIIINE of the Silver Monkey! Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room…of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the correct inscription and shout it out to open the door to the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage. Slide down the tunnel to the Dungeon, where you could smash through the wall into the Dark Forest—but beware of the Temple Guards that may inhabit the trees! Find the key in the tree, and you’ll enter…the Jungle Ruins! Climb over the ruins, and you’ll gain entry to the Atlantean Altar. Uncover the tile that lets in the waters of Atlantis, then…race through the Pit, climb through the Ledges, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone!” Olmec pauses. “You won 1 Pendant in the Temple Games. Who’s going first?”

“I am,” says Ryan.

“Very well, Ryan,” Olmec replies. “When Kirk gives the signal, you’ll race through the Gate into the Temple and make your way toward the Petrified Sandal of Pygmalion. Hidden inside the Temple are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but…if you’re caught without a Pendant, you’ll be taken out of the Temple, and it’ll be Abby’s turn to enter and try her luck. If you can reach the Petrified Sandal, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the Gates with the Petrified Sandal in three minutes, and you’ll both be handsomely rewarded…and here’s how!”

• Just for making it this far, they’ll get a sports package.
• If they can grab the Petrified Sandal within three minutes, they’ll also receive an Xbox 360, complete with three new games.
• And if they can bring the Petrified Sandal out of the Temple before three minutes expires, they’ll win a trip to Vancouver, British Columbia.

“These guys want to go to British Columbia, I know,” Kirk says. “So let’s see if we can get ‘em there. Set the clock for three minutes!” The clock slams down in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.

“Mouthpieces in, guys…Olmec, lower your gate.” Olmec moans gutturally as the gate is lowered, and the black lights under him go out.

“Ryan’s out in front,” Kirk observes. “Ready?”

Ryan nods as a response.

“On your mark,” Kirk begins, “get set, GO!”

“There he goes, into the Temple with his Pendant!” Kirk shouts as Ryan trots up the stairs and soon disappears behind Olmec. He enters the Crypt (2:54), where he pulls all three books before opening the door to the Bottomless Pit. Unfortunately, he also opens the secret door at the back of the room, where the first TEMPLE GUARD resides (2:48). “Oh, Temple Guard!” Kirk shouts as a visibly shaken Ryan hands over his Pendant. “Now he has to give up the only Pendant they have!” Ryan enters the Bottomless Pit, grabs the rope, and swings across the gap, reaching the other side despite having to grab onto another rope on the other side to pull himself across (2:38). “Oh, careful!” Kirk shouts. “They don’t call it the Bottomless Pit for nothing!” Ryan hits the actuators for the Lunar Landing and the Clockwork Room, but only the door to the latter opens, so he enters this room. Ryan glances at the large clock on the Temple Guard door, and it’s set for twelve o’clock. He goes to work setting the clocks on the left as the camera shows Abby, clapping and cheering him on. When we see Ryan again, he is working on the right-hand clocks, and as soon as he sets the last one, the doors to both the Atlantean Altar and the Room of the Mystical Keys open (2:13). “Okay, the clocks are set!” Kirk shouts as Ryan decides to climb the ladder down from the Clockwork Room. “Now he’s in the Altar of Atlantis!” Ryan enters the bottom room of the Temple’s central shaft (2:01) and begins uncovering tiles. After uncovering two tiles with nothing behind them, he finally uncovers the bottom left-hand tile, flooding the room with blue light and opening the door to the Jungle Ruins (1:56). “All right, he’s got it!” Kirk shouts as Ryan progresses through the open door. “Now he’s headed into the Jungle Ruins!” Ryan enters the room and begins climbing over the various stone structures and fake plants in the room, eventually reaching the other side, where he hits the actuator for the Dark Forest. The door opens (1:39) and he makes his way through it. He enters the Dark Forest and reaches into the stage-right tree, but the tree’s arms grab Ryan as a deep voice says “GOT YOU!”—a TEMPLE SPIRIT has captured him (1:34)!

“Oh, he’s got him! Now it’s Abby’s turn!” Kirk narrates as Abby jogs up the stairs into the Temple. She retraces Ryan’s steps, though she has a little trouble swinging across the gap in the Bottomless Pit (1:18). “Whoa—don’t fall!” Kirk warns her. “That would be disastrous!” Abby enters the Clockwork Room and begins to slowly climb down into the Atlantean Altar, slightly dazed by the bright lights in the room as she enters (1:03). After laboriously climbing through the Jungle Ruins, she eventually makes it to the Dark Forest (0:46) and reaches into the stage-left tree in search of a key. “It looks like she’s gonna try to find the key to go up,” Kirk narrates. “If she finds it, she’ll be able to get the Sandal, ‘cause she’s right under it!” After coming out empty-handed, she tries the previously possessed stage-right tree, but again comes out empty-handed, so she decides to break down the wall and enter the Dungeon instead (0:23). After looking around for a few seconds, Abby sees the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage, and begins to climb up. After some trouble making it up the slick passage, she finally enters the Room of the Secret Password, but before she can do anything, the third TEMPLE GUARD emerges from the secret door at the back of the room (0:05).

“Oh, that’s it!” Kirk shouts as the Temple Guard grabs Abby and places one hand over her mouth as he drags her toward the door he emerged from. “They had no more Pendants, so Abby’s gone! They were only one room away, too…that’s okay; they still get the sports package for playing, and I know they had a good time, right?” Ryan nods. “Sure they did! We’ve gotta go now, but we’ll see ya next time. Just remember: it’s not just Legends, it’s Legends: Rebirth! Buh-bye, everybody!”

Kirk and Ryan wave to the crowd as the credits begin to roll. The camera shows an area beside the Moat decorated with fake flowers, a fake lizard on top of one of the gongs, and a close-up of the Bottomless Pit and the Atlantean Altar. It seems like every episode in Season 1 that featured Layout 3 of the Temple ended in either a Purple Parrots victory or a dismal failure. Fortunately, this episode was somewhat entertaining to watch, even if it one of the winners was a colossal slowpoke.

Ryan wasn’t the fastest contestant, but he certainly wasn’t slow. He also knew just what to do in each room, and he appeared to know not to take the direct path to the artifact (evident by his choice to go into the Atlantean Altar instead of the Room of the Mystical Keys from the Clockwork Room). He made good time before being captured in the Dark Forest with 1:34 left.

Abby was, in many ways, the polar opposite of Ryan. She took over a minute to get to where Ryan was taken out, and spent most of the remaining time trying to find a key in the Dark Forest. She finally decided to enter the Dungeon, where she fortunately picked up the pace. After entering the Room of the Secret Password, she was caught by the third Temple Guard with only five seconds left.

If Abby hadn’t have been captured, I doubt she could have completed the room objective, entered the Shrine, and grabbed the Petrified Sandal with only five seconds left. If she’d have gone into the Temple first, Ryan probably couldn’t have reached the Sandal anyway due to her slowness. This team seemed doomed to lose from the start, as the Temple Guards were extremely tough to avoid, and they really needed that second Pendant that they didn’t have. Too bad…

Notes and Trivia: Out of all the Temple Runs in history that are ended by a third Temple Guard, this run has the least amount of time left on the clock.

This is the only episode of Season 1, Layout 3 in which neither the Purple Parrots nor the Green Monkeys make it to the Temple.

My God…could the Temple Guard who captured Abby have been more overzealous?

Correct - the door to the Shrine would have opened if they had found the key.

If only they started low, then they would've avoided the first temple guard.
