Omnium Gatherum - "The Unknowing"

A melodic death metal ballad might be the best description? :? I mean, if the drums didn't kick in, listening to the intro of the song might make you expect some cookie cutter pop rock female vocalist to start singing. :lol: Whatever it is, this is a really cool song and the solo is just awesome - reminds me of "Nothing Else Matters" in the sense that it's short but it is the perfect climax to the piece.

Not sure how I ended up listening to this, but I'm amazed by the fact that Debbie Harry is over 65 years old now, and she neither looks nor sounds it. :o Pretty catchy song, too.

Stratovarius - "Fantasy"


An example of a song that contains what I like to call the "four chords of melodic metal" (amongst other more obscure titles, other examples of this progression include "The Wicker Man," "Out Of The Silent Planet," "These Colours Don't Run," and "Brighter Than A Thousand Suns" by Iron Maiden). Like the original "four chords," it's definitely one of the catchiest progressions you'll find in metal and this indeed is pretty catchy.

One of my new faves so far.  I still have to listen to their most recent album (and I've heard it's not very good so I'm a little worried), but right now I'm falling deeply in love with this band.  Too bad Heidi's parted ways with them, though, since her voice was a big part of what attracted me.

Pretty surprising, since the only other time I've heard a classically trained male do guest vocals in this sort of music was "Imperfect Tenses" by After Forever. :o Really love this and the fact that it's in Finnish makes it more challenging yet beautiful, but if only I could find a translation online... I might know somebody I can ask to help out there, though.
