We return from the break, and see Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the two remaining teams on either side of him.
“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “Now’s when the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, but before we get started, let’s meet our two teams.
“On the Green Monkeys, we have Alisha—she plays soccer and does gymnastics, and she also likes to collect stuffed animals. And her partner here is Pablo—he enjoys rollerblading, and he wants to be a veterinarian when he gets older—let’s hear it for the Green Monkeys!” The audience applauds for the tall African-American girl with long, frizzy brown hair and the equally tall Latino boy with short black hair.
“And over on the Silver Snakes, we have Sarah—she’s into basketball and volleyball and she wants to be a lawyer. And her partner, Brendan, says he also likes to play basketball, and he’s originally from Memphis, Tennessee—how ‘bout a hand for the Silver Snakes!” The audience claps for the short girl with green eyes and long black hair and the slightly taller freckled boy with brown hair and blue eyes.
“All right, guys, are you ready?” Kirk asks the two teams.
“Yeah!” they reply.
“All right, then, go get ready for the Temple Games. Now, in the Temple Games, our teams are competing for…” Kirk retrieves a Pendant of Life from his pouch and holds it up to the camera. “…Pendants of Life. The winning teams is gonna need those Pendants for protection from those nasty Temple Guards that reside inside Olmec’s Temple. There are three Temple Games—Olmec, please explain the first one, if you would…”
“Wouldn’t I?” replies Olmec. The black lights under him come on and he begins to explain the first game:
“To think about how he could help the monks defend themselves, Bodhidharma shut himself in a room, where he stared at the wall for nine years. In this game, you don’t have to wait for nine years—only a few seconds. When Kirk gives the signal, adjust your weight and begin running to turn the giant wheel you’re standing on. When you make one rotation, it symbolizes one year that Bodhidharma stared at the temple wall. The first player to make nine complete rotations, or…the player who makes the most rotations at the end of thirty seconds…wins.”
“Wheels turning round and round…who’s gonna come out on top?” Kirk asks. “Let’s find out…set the clock for thirty seconds!” The clock slams down in the bottom right-hand corner with a loud gong sound. “Players need to get adjusted here…on your mark, get set, GO!”
Alisha and Sarah are both about the same speed, and both players are good about balancing themselves on the giant Pendant-shaped wheels. With about 13 seconds left, though, Sarah falls off, and Alisha pulls slightly ahead while she climbs back on. Sarah hurries to catch up, but Alisha is ahead by one rotation when the clock runs out.
“Okay, that’s it!” exclaims Kirk as he rushes back onscreen. “Come on down here, you two—whoa, I know you’re dizzy; let’s see how you did.” Kirk glances back at the scorecards. “It looks like the Green Monkeys ran around the wheel eight times, and…the Silver Snakes did it seven times! That gives the Green Monkeys the half Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds for a few seconds. “Don’t worry, because the Silver Snakes can catch up in this next Temple Game. It’s also worth a half Pendant—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2…”
Olmec begins:
“The Shaolin monks trained every day from the Yì J?n J?ng until they learned all the exercises by heart, and as a result, became strong and agile. You will also need the agility of a Shaolin monk to win this game. When Kirk gives the signal, roll your boulder toward your opponents’ targets and attempt to knock them down. You may block your opponents’ boulders, but if you cross into your opponents’ territory, one of your opponents’ targets will be set back up. The first team to knock down all four targets or…the team that knocks over the most targets at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”
“All right, it’s a game of strategy here,” remarks Kirk. “Put sixty seconds on the clock, please!” The clock slams down in the corner, ready to go. “All right, get in position—on your mark, get set, GO!”
Pablo and Brendan both block each other’s boulders until about fifteen seconds into the game, when Pablo knocks one of Brendan’s targets over. Brendan knocks over one of Pablo’s targets about six seconds later. Pablo knocks over another target with 31 seconds left, but Brendan knocks down another one of his with 26 seconds to go. They both successfully block one another’s advances until Pablo knocks over another target with five seconds remaining. Brendan can’t catch up by the time the game ends.
“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk shouts as he appears back onscreen. “Come over here guys, you guys did great—that was really close; when one got one, the other got one. Let’s count it up and see how we did.” Kirk looks over at the Green Monkeys’ targets first. “The Green Monkeys knocked over three targets, and…the Silver Snakes knocked over two targets, so the Green Monkeys get another half Pendant of Life!” Kirk pauses to allow the audience to applaud. “So now, the Green Monkeys are ahead, one Pendant to nothing. Now, we go to the third and final Temple Game. It’s worth a full Pendant of Life—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3…”
Olmec begins to explain the final Game:
“Once the monks became skilled at the art of Shaolin Kung fu, they successfully defended themselves and their temple from many attacks by Chinese barbarians. In this game, you’ll be helping the monks defend their temple. Before you stands a horde of Chinese rebels. When Kirk gives the signal, load your slingshot and shoot a ball at one of the rebels. Then, your partner will load the slingshot. The first team to knock over all four rebels, or…the team that knocks over the most rebels at the end of sixty seconds wins!”
“It’s a fight to the finish,” says Kirk. “So let’s get started—put sixty seconds on the clock please!” The clock slams down in the corner with the usual sound effect. “On your mark, get set, GO!”
The Green Monkeys knock down a target on their first shot, but the Silver Snakes only wobble one of theirs. About five seconds later, the Green Monkeys knock another target over as the Silver Snakes blast their first target down. With about 40 seconds left, the Silver Snakes knock over a second target. Neither team manages to knock over any of their targets for a while, and numerous cannonballs go flying into the Temple. The Green Monkeys knock over their third target with about three seconds left, and the Silver Snakes cannot catch up when time runs out.
“Okay, stop shooting!” Kirk shouts as he rushes back and stands between the teams. “Boy, that was some serious shooting there! Let’s see how we did…looks like the Green Monkeys got three targets; the Silver Snakes got two targets; that gives the Green Monkeys the full Pendant. That gives them two, the Silver Snakes didn’t get any—the Green Monkeys are goin’ to the Temple!” Alisha jumps up and down in excitement as Pablo claps and cheers. “Nice job, guys! Silver Snakes, you guys did a great job, too; you were up against a tough team. We’ve got a great gift for you, and here’s what it is!” They receive a package of Nintendo Wii games, including World of Zoo.
As the prize disappears off-screen, we see Kirk standing beside the winning team. “Now, we’ll see if the Green Monkeys can make it through Olmec’s Temple; retrieve the Lost Pages of the Yì J?n J?ng, and we’ll see right after this!”
The camera cuts to the outer edge of the Dark Forest and zooms in on one of the tree’s “faces” as the title appears onscreen, and we fade to a commercial.
