Episode 24: The Stone Nose of the Easter Island Statue

The camera winds and twists its way through a thick jungle of strange and exotic plants. After a few wrong turns, it finally stops in front of an ancient Mayan temple. At the base of the temple, a giant stone head sits. Suddenly, the head’s eyes light up and it begins to speak:

“Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth!” These words appear on the screen. “With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is now!”

A middle-aged man wearing a denim shirt and blue jeans swings in on a rope. He drops down and runs up the Steps of Knowledge, microphone in hand.

“Thank you! Thank you, everybody! Nice to see everyone again! It’s good to see you again, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth. The rooms are filled with lost treasures protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legends behind each of these newly discovered treasures in his Temple…which one are we gonna hear about today, Olmec?”

“The legend of the Stone Nose of the Easter Island Statue,” Olmec replies.

“Oh, the Stone Nose of the Easter Island Statue,” Kirk repeats. “Well, the legend is set, and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the stone nose—will it be:

“The Red Jaguars?” The camera zooms in on each team as they are introduced.
“The Blue Barracudas?
“The Green Monkeys?
“The Orange Iguanas?
“The Purple Parrots?
“Or the Silver Snakes?

“They’ll have to pass through some tough physical and nen—mental tests, but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, they’ve gotta cross that Moat, and Olmec will tell us how they’ll have to do that today…”

Olmec begins to explain the Moat Crossing:
“Before you, a line of stepping stones extends across the Moat. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will begin walking across the stones to the other side. Once they’re safely across, their partner will cross in the same way. But be sure to step on only the black stones—if you step on a white stone, it will sink, and if you touch the water, you’ll have to go back and start again. Once both players reach the other side, run over and hit the gong.” Kirk hits the Silver Snakes’ gong to demonstrate. “The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round!”

“All right, let’s get started already,” says Kirk. “Hey teams—are you ready?”
The six teams scream and cheer in response.
“And Olmec, are you ready?” Kirk asks.
“I was chiseled ready,” Olmec replies.
“Okay,” says Kirk. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

“There they go! This one’s fast!” comments Kirk as the first players from each team dart onto the stones. The Blue Barracudas’ boy slips and falls, and the Silver Snakes’ boy and the Red Jaguars’ girl accidentally step on a white stone and have to be sent back, but everyone else makes it across. The Blue Barracudas’ boy crosses successfully on his second try, and so does the Purple Parrots’ girl, the Green Monkeys’ boy, and the Orange Iguanas’ girl, who hit their team’s gong in that order. “Three teams have made it across—we need one more!” Kirk shouts. Mere seconds later, the Blue Barracudas’ girl successfully dashes across and slams her hands down on the gong, beating out the Silver Snakes’ girl by only about half a second.

“That’s it!” Kirk shouts as he rushes over and stands beside the Purple Parrots. “That was fast—fast and furious, but we can only take four teams, and goin’ on to the Steps of Knowledge are the mighty Purple Parrots…and the pugnacious Orange Iguanas!” He pauses between each team’s name to allow the audience to applaud. “And the unflappable Green Monkeys, and the tenacious Blue Barracudas! The Red Jaguars and the Silver Snakes were this…” Kirk holds up his thumb and forefinger with a tiny space between them. “…this close, but they’re not going home empty-handed. We’ve got a great gift for ‘em, and here’s what that is!” They receive a $50 gift certificate from Radio Shack.

Kirk and the four remaining teams are now standing atop the Steps of Knowledge. “As the quest continues, it’s now time for Olmec to tell us about the Stone Nose of the Easter Island Statue. But teams, pay attention, because your knowledge of the legends can and will bring you a step closer to Olmec’s Temple…”

Olmec begins to tell the story:
“Some of the most intriguing and mysterious structures ever fashioned by human hands are the over 800 stone statues on Easter Island, located in the Pacific Ocean. Known officially as moai, no one is quite sure who carved these statues, but they are probably over 500 years old. The largest statue stands over 30 feet tall and weighs over 80 tons. When the first European explorers landed on Easter Island in 1722, they were astounded at the sheer size and intricate detail of the moai. In 1868, the crew of the British ship the HMS Topaze decided to transport one of the moai to a British museum.
“‘I say; do be careful with this thing!’ shouted Commodore Richard Powell. ‘This statue is older than—well—me!’
“Richard and his crew loaded up the stone structure on a wooden cart, and began carrying it toward the ship. But legend has it that one of the crewmen was notoriously clumsy.
“‘Hey, Joe, you’d better watch where you’re walking,’ one of his crewmates warned.
“‘Relax, I could do this with my eyes closed—whoops!’
“With that, Joe stepped into a deep hole and lost his grip on one of the cart’s handles, causing it to jostle forward. The stone structure rolled off the cart and into a valley below, and its giant nose broke off in the process. The rest of the statue was recovered and arrived safely in Britain, but the stone nose ended up in the Temple. Your quest is to find the Stone Nose of the Easter Island Statue and bring it back here.”

“Thank you, Olmec,” says Kirk. “So tell us, where is this stone nose?"

“The Stone Nose of the Easter Island Statue can be found in the Room of the Mystical Keys,” Olmec replies. The camera zooms in on the broken stone nose on the guardrail of the room before fading back to Kirk.

“Teams, you’re now standing on the Steps of Knowledge,” Kirk explains. “In a moment, Olmec’s gonna ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, I want you to stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you. If you’re right, you’ll be able to move down to the next level, but if you’re wrong or you run out of time, I’m gonna give the other teams a chance.” Kirk begins descending the Steps. “The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec’s Temple. Olmec…we’re now ready for your first question.”

Olmec begins:
“Is Easter Island located in: the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, or—”
The Purple Parrots ring in. “Pacific Ocean.”
“That…is correct,” Olmec assures. The Purple Parrots step down to the second level.
“Purple Parrots, step down,” Kirk says. “Next question.”

“Are the stone statues on Easter Island called: moray, mobai, or moai?”
The Blue Barracudas ring in. “Moe-eye…?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies.
“Blue Barracudas are right behind ‘em,” narrates Kirk as the Blue Barracudas join the Purple Parrots on the second step. “Next question, Olmec.”

“How old are the moai: over 50 years, over 500 years, or over 5000 years?”
The Orange Iguanas ring in. “500 years…?”
“That is correct,” Olmec booms. The Orange Iguanas become the third team to step to the second level.
“Orange Iguanas step down now,” Kirk says. “It’s literally anybody’s game. Next question, Olmec.”

“Is the largest of the moai: 3 feet tall, 30 feet tall, or 300 feet tall?”
The Purple Parrots ring in. “30 feet tall.”
“That is correct,” Olmec assures. The Purple Parrots step down to the penultimate step.
“Nice work, Purple Parrots,” Kirk observes. “They’re only one step away from the Temple Games; but a lot could happen between here and now. Next question.”

“What was the name of the ship that tried to transport one of the moai: the Emerald, the Topaze, or the Sapphire?”
After a few seconds, the Green Monkeys ring in. “Topaz?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Green Monkeys step to the second level.
“Nice work—the Green Monkeys are on the board now!” Kirk exclaims. “Like I said, it’s anyone’s game. Olmec, continue.”

“Was the Topaze from: Spain, Great Britain, or France?”
The Orange Iguanas ring in. “Great Britain…?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Orange Iguanas join the Purple Parrots on the next-to-last step.
“The Orange Iguanas are only a step away, now,” Kirk narrates. “Blue Barracudas and Green Monkeys, you guys can still catch up…next question.”

“How did the men carry the statue to their ship—”
The Green Monkeys ring in early and stumble over the answer. “Uh…they put ‘em on big carts…with wheels…?”
“That…is correct,” Olmec responds after a few seconds of hesitation.
“And the Green Monkeys are a step away now,” Kirk observes as the Green Monkeys join the Purple Parrots and Orange Iguanas. “Blue Barracudas could still pull off an upset, though…next question.”

“According to our legend, how did the statue’s nose fall off: it was knocked off in a storm, it—”
The Blue Barracudas ring in early. “Uh…it fell off the cart, and…rolled down a hill, and it broke off.”
“That…is correct,” Olmec replies. The Blue Barracudas join the other three teams on the penultimate level, which means…
“We’ve got a four-way tie on the next-to-last step!” Kirk exclaims. “The next two teams to get a correct answer will go on to the Temple Games. Olmec, if you please…”

“According to our legend, what was the notoriously clumsy crew member’s name—”
The Orange Iguanas ring in early. “Uh…Richard Powell.”
“That is not one of our three choices,” Olmec replies. “The three choices are: Joe, Moe, or Flo?”
The Purple Parrots ring in. “Joe…?”
“That is…correct,” Olmec replies. The Purple Parrots leap to the bottom step and high-five one another.
“And the Purple Parrots are goin’ on to the Temple Games!” Kirk exclaims. “We can only take one more team, and the next team to give a correct answer will be it. Olmec, next question.”

“Who was the commander of the HMS Topaze: Richard Grenville, Richard Powell—”
The Blue Barracudas ring in immediately after the second answer is given. “Richard Powell!”
“That…is CORRECT!” Olmec booms. The Blue Barracudas leap to the bottom level and high-ten one another.

“That’s it!” Kirk shouts as he runs over and stands between the two advancing teams. “It came down to a four-way tie, but we now have two teams for the Temple Games: they’re the Blue Barracudas, and the Purple Parrots! Orange Iguanas, Green Monkeys, come on down here, you guys.” The Orange Iguanas’ boy looks pissed. “You guys aren’t going home empty-handed…here’s what we’ve got for you!” They receive World of Zoo for the Nintendo Wii.

Kirk is now standing between the Blue Barracudas and the Purple Parrots. “These two teams are gonna play for the rights to enter Olmec’s Temple, and they’ll do it right after this!”

The camera zooms out from Kirk and the teams, turns around, and looks into the purple and black plastic balls in the Bottomless Pit as the title appears onscreen, and we fade to a commercial.

We return from the break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the two remaining teams on either side of him.

“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “Now, the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest. But before that happens, I’d like to get to know our two teams a little better.”

“On the Blue Barracudas, we have Bethany: she runs track and she wants to be a nurse, and her partner is Tuan: he likes to play soccer and lacrosse, and he also likes to collect stamps—let’s hear it for the Blue Barracudas!” The audience applauds the short, lanky girl with straight blonde hair and blue eyes and the tall Chinese boy.

“And on the Purple Parrots, this is Nina; she’s a cheerleader and a baton twirler, and she also wants to be an actress someday, and her partner is Jamie; he plays baseball and he also likes to scuba-dive—in fact, he wants to be a marine biologist—how ‘bout a hand for the Purple Parrots?” The audience applauds for the average-height girl with long red hair and green eyes and the tall, blue-eyed boy with straight brown hair.

“All right, guys, are you ready?” Kirk asks the teams.

“Yeah!” they reply.

“All right—girls, you go get ready for the first Temple Game; guys, you can get set up for the second one over there. Now, let me just bring out the ol’ Pendant of Life…” Kirk retrieves a Pendant from his pouch and holds it up to the camera. “…here it is. The winning team will need Pendants like these to protect them from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through Olmec’s Temple. There are three Temple Games, and Olmec will tell us about the first one…”

The black lights under Olmec come on and he begins to explain the first Game:

“No one is quite sure who carved the moai, but many think that ancient inhabitants of Easter Island may have done it. In this game, you are about to create your own statue. When Kirk gives the signal, run out, grab the statue’s left eye, come back and place it on your blank stone statue. Then run back out and grab another piece of the statue. Along the way, you must avoid the swinging obstacles—if you’re hit, you must go back and start again. The first player to complete their statue or…the player that’s further along at the end of thirty seconds…wins.”

“I read somewhere that they may have built the statues just like this,” Kirk jokes. “Let’s set the clock for thirty seconds!” The clock slams down in the corner, set for thirty seconds. “Let’s get the sandbags in position…” The spotters do just this. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Bethany and Nina each run out and grab the left eye of the statue without being hit by the giant boulder-shaped sandbag, and they both place it with about 25 seconds to go. Bethany runs out and grabs the right eye without getting hit, but Nina is blindsided by the sandbag while trying to run back with her statue’s right eye. Bethany tries to bring back her statue’s nose, but she’s hit by the sandbag just as she’s turning around. This gives Nina a chance to grab her statue’s right eye and bring it back with 12 seconds on the clock. Unfortunately for Nina, she is hit as she is about to grab her statue’s nose, allowing Bethany to bring back her statue’s nose and reclaim the lead with six seconds to go. Nina can’t bring back her nose, and Bethany can’t bring back her last piece—a long gray line representing a mouth—as time expires.

“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk shouts as he rushes back onscreen. “Stop swinging the sandbags! They were getting beat by those bags left and right in that game, weren’t you? Let’s take a look at the statues and see how we did…” He walks over to the statues and begins to analyze the results. “It looks like the Purple Parrots got both eyes on their statue, and…the Blue Barracudas got both eyes, but they also got the statue’s nose—that means the Blue Barracudas get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds for a few seconds. “Purple Parrots, don’t worry, though, because you guys can catch up this—in this next Temple Game. It’s also worth a half Pendant—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2…”

Olmec begins:
“Unfortunately, many of the hundreds of moai that originally stood on Easter Island were destroyed by the mid-1800s by careless explorers. Before you stand four targets, which represent four of the moai statues. When Kirk gives the signal, load your slingshot and shoot a ball at one of the statues. Then load another ball and shoot again. The first player to knock over all their moai, or…the player who knocks over the most moai at the end of sixty seconds wins!”

“Seems like a shame to knock over these nice statues,” observes Kirk. “Let’s put sixty seconds on the clock!” The clock slams down in the corner, ready to go. “On your mark—ready, aim, FIRE!”

Jamie and Tuan both have pretty good aim, and knock over their first two targets on their first two tries. No one knocks over another target for a while, but with about 33 seconds left, Jamie knocks over his third target. Tuan is right behind him, knocking over his third four seconds later. Balls go flying everywhere until about 19 seconds remain on the clock, when one of the balls Jamie fires knocks over his fourth target. The same ball Tuan fires one second later knocks over his final target.

“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk shouts before Tuan’s target falls. “That was a close one! But the judges say that the Purple Parrots knocked down all four of their statues first, so the Purple Parrots get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds briefly. “So now, it’s tied, a half Pendant apiece. But now, it’s time for the third and final Temple Game. It’s worth a full Pendant of Life. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3…”

Olmec begins to explain the final Game:
“After the crew of the Topaze loaded up the moai, they transported them back to the museum in Great Britain. Fortunately for you, your trip will be significantly shorter. When Kirk gives the signal, propel your boat off the dock. Once you reach your destination, climb out and load the statue in your boat. Then, turn around and sail back. If you touch the water, you’ll have to go back and start again. The first team to step back onto the dock, or…the team that’s further along at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”

“This is for the Temple,” Kirk explains. “Set the clock for sixty seconds!” The clock slams down in the corner, ready to go. “Okay, teams…on your mark, get set, GO! There they go; bon voyage!”

The Blue Barracudas and the Purple Parrots remain pretty even throughout this game—they both reach the destination with about 50 seconds left, and they both load up the statue in about six seconds. The Blue Barracudas have a little trouble turning their boat around, and that’s all the Purple Parrots need to pull ahead, making it back to the dock with a full 25 seconds on the clock.

“Okay, that’s it!” says Kirk as the Purple Parrots step onto the dock. He soon appears beside them. “That was quick! The Purple Parrots made it back first, so the Purple Parrots win the full Pendant. That gives them a Pendant and a half, the Blue Barracudas got a half Pendant—the Purple Parrots are goin’ to the Temple!” Nina and Jamie high-ten one another as Nina jumps up and down in excitement; the Blue Barracudas look quite dejected. “Blue Barracudas, come over here. I know you’re disappointed, but you guys were great, too. We’ve got a great gift for these guys for playing, and here’s what it is!” They receive a custom-made Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth watch.

As the prize disappears off-screen, Kirk is seen standing beside Nina and Jamie. “Now, we’ll see if the Purple Parrots can make it through Olmec’s Temple and retrieve the Stone Nose of the Easter Island Statue, right after this!”

The camera pans in on the Temple, snakes up the outside wall to the Room of the Mystical Keys, and zooms in on the Stone Nose on the guardrail there as the title appears onscreen, and we go to a commercial.

We return from the break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the winning team.

“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “The Purple Parrots have proven themselves worthy, and now have earned the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But before they get started, Olmec’s gonna give them some information to help them retrieve the Stone Nose of the Easter Island Statue…”

Olmec begins to explain the Temple layout as the camera gives us a first-person walkthrough of the Temple:
“You could start…by running up the stairs to the Crypt! Grab the book from the skeletons, and pass into the Bottomless Pit! Swing across the gap, and climb into the Lunar Landing. Align the puzzle on the satellite, and a door may open into the Clockwork Room. Set the clocks for the correct time, and pass into the Room…of the Mystical Keys! Reach into the compartments to find the two correct keys, and open the door to the SHRIIIIINE of the Silver Monkey! Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room…of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the correct inscription and shout it out to open the door to the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage. Slide down the tunnel to the Dungeon, where you could smash through the wall into the Dark Forest—but beware of the Temple Guards that may inhabit the trees! Find the key in the tree, and you’ll enter…the Jungle Ruins! Climb over the ruins, and you’ll gain entry to the Atlantean Altar. Uncover the tile that lets in the waters of Atlantis, then…race through the Pit, climb through the Ledges, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone!” Olmec pauses. “You won 1½ Pendants in the Temple Games. Who’s going first?”

“I am,” says Nina, raising her hand.

“Very well, Nina,” Olmec replies. “When Kirk gives the signal, you’ll race through the Gate into the Temple and make your way toward the Stone Nose. Hidden inside the Temple are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but…if you’re caught without a Pendant, you’ll be taken out of the Temple, and it’ll be Jamie’s turn to enter and try his luck. Hidden somewhere inside the Temple is the other half of your Pendant. If you can find it and you’re carrying the other half, you’ll receive an extra life. If you can reach the Stone Nose, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the Gate with the Stone Nose of the Easter Island Statue in three minutes, and you’ll both be handsomely rewarded…and here’s how!”

• Just for making it this far, they’ll get a DVD player from Sony.
• If they can grab the Stone Nose within three minutes, they’ll also receive a Ping-Pong table.
• And if they can bring the Stone Nose out of the Temple before three minutes expires, they’ll win a trip to Jamaica.

“All right, let’s see if they can make it out and all the way to Jamaica,” says Kirk. “Mouthpiece in, Nina…oh, Jamie, you may need yours in too; never know when you’ve gotta take off. Olmec, lower your gate, please.” Olmec moans gutturally as the Gate is lowered, and the black lights under him go out.

“And let’s set the clock…for three minutes.” The clock slams down in the bottom right-hand corner, set to go.

“Okay, Nina,” Kirk says to the frontrunner, “on your mark, get set, GO!”

“There she goes!” Kirk shouts via a voice-over as Nina dashes up the stairs and soon disappears behind Olmec. She soon enters the Crypt and pulls two books before opening the door to the Bottomless Pit, but also opening the secret door at the back of the room and revealing the first TEMPLE GUARD (2:52). “Oh, the first Temple Guard, right off the bat!” Kirk shouts as Nina hands over her Pendant of Life. “But she’s got a Pendant, so she can keep going!” Nina enters the Bottomless Pit and swings across the gap via the rope. When she reaches the other side, she tries the actuators to the Clockwork Room and the Lunar Landing, but neither door opens (2:40). She drops to the bottom of the room and begins to hit the actuator for the door to the Atlantean Altar, but finds the hidden half Pendant in the process and signals back to Jamie. “Oh, she found the half Pendant!” Kirk narrates as Nina hits the actuator for the Atlantean Altar. “Jamie might need that if he ever takes off!” Nina emerges in the Atlantean Altar, but she can’t even go to the back of the room to uncover the tiles—she’s immediately ambushed by the second TEMPLE GUARD (2:27).

“Oh, second Temple Guard!” Kirk shouts, changing to live action. “Go, Jamie!” Jamie darts up the steps, solidly retracing Nina’s path. When he reaches the door to the Atlantean Altar, he retrieves the half Pendant on the actuator there, enters the room (2:10) and uncovers two tiles on the back wall before finding the one with blue light behind it. The light orb at the front of the room floods the room with blue waves of light, and the door to the Jungle Ruins opens. “There he goes—into the Jungle Ruins!” Kirk narrates. Jamie darts through the open door into the Ruins (2:00) and begins clambering over the plants, stones, and other obstacles in the room. “The Jungle can slow you down!” Kirk says. After a little trouble, he reaches the other side and hits the actuator for the Dark Forest, which opens (1:46). He enters the room and looks around for a while before reaching into the stage-left tree in search of a key. After feeling around for a few seconds, he finally gives up and breaks through the rock wall into the Dungeon. He starts to look around, but the third TEMPLE GUARD soon jumps out from hiding (1:32). “Oh, the Temple Guard was waiting for him!” Kirk shouts. “Good thing he found the other half of his Pendant!” After a little difficulty retrieving them at first, Jamie hands over his two Pendant halves, and the Temple Guard retreats to the back of the room. Jamie starts to climb the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage (1:20), but he slips before he’s out of sight. “Oh, careful—the Pharaoh’s Passage is slippery!” Kirk warns. Jamie takes a few steps back and gets a running start this time before trying to dart up the slick Passage. However, he again can’t make it up. “Oh, he’s gotta make it up the Passage if he wants to go any further!” Kirk laments. Jamie gives up on the Passage for a while and climbs the ladder on the right side of the room. When he reaches the top, he hits the actuator for the door to the Shrine, which luckily for him, opens (0:59).

“Oh, he found another way!” Kirk observes. “There’s more than one way to skin a cat,” he adds as Jamie enters the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. “Or, in this case, a monkey!” Jamie goes to the back of the room, where he grabs the middle of the statue. He brings it to the front of the room and tries to place it on the pedestal, but it obviously won’t fit. When he realizes his mistake, he goes to the back of the room again, brings the base back to the front, and successfully places it on the pedestal (0:40). He then successfully places the middle (0:35). “He’s got it—all he needs is the head!” Kirk explains. Jamie rushes to the back of the room, grabs the monkey head, brings it back, and jams it down, opening the doors to both the Room of the Secret Password and the Room of the Mystical Keys (0:24). After looking back at the open door to the Room of the Secret Password, Jamie heads into the Room of the Mystical Keys. “Now he’s got to—no, wait! He’s in the room!” Kirk shouts as Jamie grabs the STONE NOSE (0:17).

“He’s got it! He’s got the Stone Nose!” Jamie progresses through the now-open door to the Clockwork Room. The camera shows Nina on the ground beside Kirk, clapping and cheering Jamie on. The camera cuts to Jamie as he enters the Bottomless Pit, swings across on the rope, and enters the Crypt (0:05). “Five seconds left—four, three!” Kirk begins to count down. Jamie dashes through the Crypt and down the stairs, making it back across the Gate with one second left on the clock.

“He did it!” Kirk shouts as a fanfare of trumpets plays. Nina jumps up and down in excitement as Jamie cheers and holds the Stone Nose up in his left hand. “They both did it! He made it to the Stone Nose, and he got out in time! They got it all! They got the DVD player, the Ping-Pong table—they’re going to Jamaica!” Nina squeals and applauds in excitement as Jamie gives a big, stretched-out “Wooo!” “Woo—he’s excited!” Kirk says as he puts his hands on both players’ shoulders. “And he should be—this was a great team! They were awesome all day long—it’s been great havin’ ‘em on the show! But unfortunately, we’ve gotta go. But we’ll see ya next time, though, and just remember: it’s not just Legends, it’s Legends: Rebirth! Bye, everybody!”

Kirk, Nina and Jamie chat and cheer as the credits begin to roll. The camera shows various shots of rooms in the Temple, including the Atlantean Altar and the Jungle Ruins. A group of rubber snakes is shown somewhere on set, and we see Kirk, Nina and Jamie one final time. Jamie holds the Stone Nose up to the camera and mouths 'I did it' before the Stone Stanley logo appears onscreen.

This episode could well be the best one of Rebirth so far. The Moat was very exciting, the Steps of Knowledge featured a rare four-way tie on the bottom step, the Temple Games were incredibly competitive, and the Temple Run—well, it speaks for itself.

Nina wasn’t the fastest contestant, but she seemed to know what she was doing. She smartly tried all three doors in the Pit, and pointed out the hidden half Pendant on the actuator for the Atlantean Altar. She was taken out in that room with a whopping two-and-a-half minutes left on the clock.

Jamie picked up where she left off—and then some. He blazed through the room objectives until he got to the Dungeon, where he couldn’t make it up the slick Pharaoh’s Secret Passage. He tried a second time, but again, nothing. He tried the door to the Shrine—and fortunately for him, it opened. He assembled the monkey, grabbed the Stone Nose with seventeen seconds left on the clock, and made it back across the Gate with one second to spare, making this the closest win to date on Rebirth. A highly exciting episode, worthy of the title of one of the best of all time.

Notes & Trivia: This is one of only two episodes of Rebirth that feature a four-way tie on the bottom step of the Steps of Knowledge.

During the Moat and Steps of Knowledge, you can clearly see that this episode doesn’t have an audience—the only episode to feature Layout 3 without one.

“The Marble Armrest of Xerxes” and this episode are the only ones to feature a player who cannot make it up the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage. Unlike that episode, though, the door from the Dungeon to the Shrine does open.

This is the first episode of Rebirth that I know of that features a Kirk voice-over during the Temple Run. The voice changes to a live Kirk when Jamie takes off into the Temple.

Is it just me, or do the stone statues the players are putting together in the first Temple Game look like Squidward’s house from SpongeBob SquarePants?
