We return from the break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the two remaining teams.
“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “Now, the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest. But before we get started, let’s get to know our two teams a little better.”
Kirk turns first to the Blue Barracudas, who are made up of a tall blue-eyed girl with extremely long, glossy black hair tied back into a ponytail and a slightly shorter blue-eyed boy with stringy brown hair.
“First, on the Blue Barracudas, we have Karen. How old are you, Karen?”
“Fourteen,” Karen replies.
“And it says here you’re a cheerleader, and what you really like is to collect maps—tell me about that.”
“Well,” begins Karen, “I really like geography, and…I like to see what kinds of…land features are in different places.”
“How many maps do you have?” asks Kirk.
“Mmm…about twenty-five,” replies Karen.
“So you’ll always know where you’re going, huh?” Karen laughs as Kirk turns to talk to her partner. “And over here, we have Jimmy. How old are you?”
“Thirteen,” Jimmy replies.
“And here it says you like all kinds of sports, but your favorite is basketball—why?”
“Hmm…I think it’s ‘cause I like my teammates, and I…just really like to play it,” says Jimmy.
“Looks like we’ve got an athletic team here—let’s hear it for ‘em!” says Kirk, and Karen and Jimmy applaud with the audience.
Kirk now turns to the Orange Iguanas, who are made up of a brown-eyed girl with nappy brown hair and freckles and a slightly taller blue-eyed boy with extremely dark hair.
“And on the Orange Iguanas, we have Lindsey. How old are you, Lindsey?”
“Twelve,” she replies in a mousy voice.
“And here it says that you like to sing, dance and play the violin—how long have you been playing it?”
“Um…about two years now,” says Lindsey.
“Do you know any songs?” asks Kirk.
“Yeah, some basic stuff…I also know something by Vivaldi,” says Lindsay.
“Ah, neat,” says Kirk before he turns to her partner. “And over here is your partner, Shawn. How old are you, Shawn?”
“Thirteen,” he says.
“And here it says that you’re a fan of classic video games—tell me about that.”
“Well, my parents have an old Space Invaders arcade game,” Shawn begins, “and I play it every once in a while. I’ve played quite a few cool things before—Pac-Man, Frogger, stuff like that.”
“Well, you’ll have to show us your skills in these Temple Games—let’s hear it for the Orange Iguanas!” Kirk says, and Lindsey and Shawn smile as the audience applauds.
“All right, are you guys ready to play?” Kirk asks both teams.
“Yeah!” they reply.
“All right—go get ready for the Temple Games,” Kirk instructs. “Now, in the Temple Games, our teams are competing for…” Kirk retrieves a Pendant of Life from his pouch and holds it up to the camera. “…Pendants of Life. Why? The winning team will need the Pendants that they win to protect them from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through Olmec’s Temple. There are three Temple Games—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #1, if you please…”
The black lights under Olmec come on as he begins to explain the first Temple Game:
“Like most pirates, Ned Lowe buried some of his treasure so he could come back and dig it up later. In this game, you’ll be digging up some of that treasure. When Kirk gives the signal, crawl out to the first plot of sand and use your hands to start digging through it. When you find a gold coin, come back and place it in your bin. Then crawl out to the next sand plot and start digging for the next coin. The first player to successfully dig up all four of their coins, or…the player who digs up the most coins in sixty seconds…wins.”
“Ooh, digging for buried treasure,” Kirk remarks. “Let’s get started…set the clock for sixty seconds!” The clock slams down in the bottom right-hand corner with a loud gong sound effect. “On your mark, get set, GO!”
Both boys crawl to the first plot of sand and start digging through it. Both find their first coin within six seconds, and rush back to place it in their team’s bin. The second go-around sees Jimmy retrieve his second coin and bring it back with forty-five seconds left. Shawn is a bit slower, and takes about five more seconds to find his second coin and bring it back. Jimmy searches through his third sandbox, finding his third coin almost immediately, and brings it back with a full thirty-seven seconds remaining. Shawn is not so lucky—he’s still searching through his third sand pile as Jimmy sifts through his fourth. Shawn finds his third coin and brings it back with twenty-six seconds left, and goes to work sorting through his final pile of sand. Many seconds go by until Jimmy finds his final coin buried deep in the fourth sand pile, and brings it back to his team’s bin with six seconds left.
“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk shouts as he rushes back onscreen. “Nice job by both teams, but the Blue Barracudas got all four of their coins before time ran out, so the Blue Barracudas get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds for a few seconds. “The Orange Iguanas can catch up in this next Temple Game; it’s worth a half Pendant, too. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2…”
Olmec begins:
“When Ned Lowe began attacking a ship, he would bombard them with cannonballs until they surrendered. In this game, you’ll be doing something similar to that. When Kirk gives the signal, roll your giant cannonball toward your opponents’ targets and attempt to knock them down. You may block your opponents’ cannonball, but if you cross into your opponents’ territory, one of your opponents’ targets will be set back up. The first team to knock down all four targets or…the team that knocks over the most targets at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”
“It’s a battle between pirate ships,” says Kirk. “Let’s set the clock for sixty seconds!” The clock slams down in the corner. “On your mark, get set, GO!”
Lindsey’s size comes back to bite her in the backside in this game, as she isn’t fast enough to block and return many shots that the larger Karen makes, allowing Karen to take a quick lead. The Blue Barracudas also don’t advance into the Orange Iguanas’ territory at all, and Karen knocks over Lindsey’s fourth and final target with a healthy seventeen seconds left on the clock.
“Okay, that’s it!” says Kirk as he appears back onscreen. “That’s it—Blue Barracudas were able to knock over all four targets first, so the Blue Barracudas get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds briefly. “So now, the Blue Barracudas are ahead, but the Orange Iguanas can tie it up in this last Temple Game. It’s worth a full Pendant—Olmec, tell us about it, please.”
Olmec begins to explain the final Temple Game:
“Even though Ned’s crew wanted to turn back, Ned raised his flag up the mast anyway, and ransacked the thirteen fishing ships. In this game, you’ll also be raising a flag up a mast—even though your mast is quite a bit shorter. When Kirk gives the signal, begin climbing up the mast with your flag in tow. Once both players reach the top of the mast, place your team’s flag. The first team to place their flag—wins.”
“This is for the Temple,” Kirk remarks. “Not gonna set the clock for this one, so just get in position—on your mark, get set, GO!”
Both teams have a little trouble getting used to the “team” aspect of this game, but they do eventually get the hang of it, pulling one another up the wooden pole using their harness. The teams remain neck-and-neck throughout this game, all the way to the top of the masts. It is very close, but the Orange Iguanas manage to place their orange flag at the top of their mast first, just barely ahead of the Blue Barracudas.
“Okay, that’s it!” says Kirk before he appears back onscreen. “It was close there at the end, but the Orange Iguanas just made it to the top first. That gives them the full Pendant—the Blue Barracudas also have a full Pendant. We’ve got a tie! Bring in the tiebreaker pedestal!”
A spotter wheels in the tiebreaker pedestal, and both teams position themselves behind it. Kirk stands beside the pedestal and explains the rules. “Okay, teams, here’s what’s gonna happen. In a few minutes, Olmec’s gonna ask you one final question. If you think you know the answer, hit the gong in front of you. You’ll have three seconds to answer, and we must accept your first answer. The first team to buzz in and answer correctly is going inside the Temple in search of the Pirate’s Flag of Ned Lowe. All clear?” Both teams nod in response. “Okay,” Kirk says. “Olmec…what is the final question?”
Olmec begins to ask the final question of the day:
“Which of these is another term for a pirate’s flag: the Happy Jack, the Jolly Roger, or the Silly William?”
The Blue Barracudas ring in. “Jolly Roger?”
“That…is correct!” Olmec booms.
“The Blue Barracudas are goin’ to the Temple!” Kirk shouts as Jimmy and Karen high-ten one another in excitement. “Orange Iguanas, you guys did great, too—it was neck-and-neck, all the way. We’re not sending you home empty-handed. We’ve got a great gift for you guys, and here’s what it is!” They receive a $150 savings bond provided by Skechers shoes.
As the prize disappears off-screen, Kirk is seen standing beside the winning team. “Now we’ll see if the Blue Barracudas can make it through Olmec’s Temple; retrieve the Pirate’s Flag of Ned Lowe, right after this!”
The camera pans in on the Temple and zooms in on the Pirate’s Flag before the title appears onscreen, and we fade to a commercial.
