Rediscovery EP: The Melted Lamp of Paul Revere

Author's Note: This is one of the episodes in my independent project.  If you have any complaints, first thing to do is to go see the episode directory here:
Legends: The Rediscovery

Episode 23px]

The camera maneuvers through a thick rainforest to stop in front of an ancient temple.  A giant stone head next to the gate of the temple begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE! With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is NOW!"

On this final word, Kirk appears from behind the Temple Guard door in the Dungeon and runs straight out into the foreground of the stage to greet the crowd. "Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Nice to see you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple.  The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards.  Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple.  Which legend are we gonna hear about today?"

Olmec replies:
"The Melted Lamp of Paul Revere."

"Ooh, the Melted Lamp of Paul Revere!" Kirk says in response. "Well the legend is set, and one of these six teams will have the chance to retrieve the Melted Lamp.  Will it be:
"Adam and Kelsey of the Red Jaguars?" the camera pans to each team in order?
"Keith and April of the Blue Barracudas,
"Jeff and Colleen of the Green Monkeys,
"Zak and Sarah of the Orange Iguanas,
"Will and Rhy-lyn of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Danny and Sabrina of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  But first they must cross the Moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today:
"In front of each team are three ropes: one that goes straight across the Moat, and two that crisscross in the middle.  When I say go, one player from each team will grab onto the higher rope and walk across the lower rope.  And when the ropes cross, they'll have to switch their feet to the other rope.  When the first player steps onto the deck, it's his partner's turn to cross."
"When the second player steps onto the deck, it's his job to run over here and hit the gong." He slams down on the Red Jaguars' gong to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will be going on to the Steps of Knowledge? ARE YOU READY!"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Olmec, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"Rock and roll!" Olmec shouts as an answer.
"All right then," Kirk replies. "On your marks, get set, GO!"

The first players from each team step onto the lower ropes and grab the higher ropes, just as Kirk told them to.  None of the players are that fast, but the girl on the Green Monkeys makes it across first, with the girls on the Blue Barracudas and Purple Parrots on her tail.  The other three teams? first players make it across a few moments later.
?Right now it?s lookin? like a mirror image!? Kirk comments. ?They?re moving their way across, I betcha it?s gonna come down to the last one, huh?? A few seconds later the boy on the Purple Parrots steps off the lower rope and runs over to hit his team?s gong.  The boys on the Blue Barracudas and the Green Monkeys follow suit.  Then the second player on the Red Jaguars makes it on the deck, and she locks in for the fourth position.
?That?s it!? Kirk shouts as the second players on the Silver Snakes and the Orange Iguanas step onto the deck. ?We?ve got our four teams right here! Red Jaguars over in a flash! They?re goin? onto the Steps of Knowledge, along with the Blue Barracudas?? the camera briefly shows each qualifying team? ?and the Green Monkeys? and the Purple Parrots! Orange Iguanas and Silver Snakes gave it a great effort too.  They?re not going away empty-handed, we?ve got a great gift for them for playing and here?s what it is.? Zak, Danny, Sarah and Sabrina will each be receiving a copy of The Ant Bully on DVD.

Rediscovery EP: The Melted Lamp of Paul Revere
« Reply #1 on: April 16, 2007, 04:27:24 PM »
The four teams are now in front of a thin arch made of wood, and are standing at the top of the Steps of Knowledge accompanied by Kirk. "As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about the Melted Lamp of Paul Revere.  But pay attention teams, because your knowledge of the Legend can bring you one step closer to Olmec's Temple."
Olmec begins to tell the legend:
"In the Revolutionary War, the biggest problem for the colonists in America were the British soldiers.  One night in Boston, the American soldiers, the Minutemen, were all asleep in their beds, along with the rest of the city? except for a man named Paul Revere.  Paul got his hands on a copy of a British battle plan, and that night he stayed up late reading it with fear.
"'Attack Lexington,' he read, 'capture John Adams and take the weapons in the supply shed in Concord.  Not good! I gotta warn Bill!' He grabbed two lanterns off the table and went to see his friend William Dawes.  He knocked on the door several times before William answered it.
"'Paul?? What?re you doin? up this late? Are you sleepwalking again?'
"'The British?re coming! The British?re coming! I need you to help me spread the word through town!'
"'But how?re they coming? By land? By sea?'
"'Don?t worry! I think I got an idea?'
"And so Paul and William rode through Boston on horseback to wake up the Minutemen.
"'The British?re coming! The British?re coming!'
"'I think you?ve made your point.'
"'You know what to do,' Paul said as William rode off in another direction.  William ran to the Old North Church with Paul?s lamps in hand, and raced up to the bell tower to place them on the balcony and light them? one if by land, two if by sea.  Paul saw two lights in the bell tower, and he rode off to warn the people in Lexington and Concord of the attack.
"William turned to follow Paul?s path, knocking one of the lamps over the railing into the road below.  When the British arrived, the Minutemen easily beat them, and after the battle all that was left was a melted lamp? the lamp William Dawes accidentally knocked over the railing of the bell tower balcony.  Your quest is to retrieve the Melted Lamp of Paul Revere and bring it back here."

"Thank you Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes telling the legend. "So tell us, where is that Melted Lamp?"
Olmec replies:
"The Melted Lamp of Paul Revere can be found in the Dark Overlook." The camera zooms in on the Melted Lamp on the camera-right pedestal in the front of the Dark Overlook, then fades back to Kirk.

"Teams," Kirk begins, walking down the steps, "you are now standing on the Steps of Knowledge, and in a minute, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, I want you to stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're right, you're gonna move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance to answer.  The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  Olmec, we're now ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
?Did Paul Revere live during: the War of 1812???
Short little Adam rings in: ?The Revolution!?
?Correct,? Olmec replies.
?Okay! Step down!? Kirk shouts, and the Red Jaguars, Adam and Kelsey, move down to the second step. ?Next question, Olmec.?
Olmec asks:
?Did Paul Revere get his hands on???
Adam stomps down first again: ?Umm? the? Melted Lamp of Paul Revere!?
?That is not one of our three choices,? Olmec answers. ?Did he get his hands on: A letter from the British general, A copy of the battle plan, or The lyrics for ?Yankee Doodle???
Colleen buzzes in: ?Battle plan???
?Correct,? Olmec replies, and the Green Monkeys move down a step.  Olmec then asks:
?What was the name of Paul Revere?s comrade???
Will rings in: ?William Dawes???
?Correct,? answers Olmec, and the Purple Parrots also move down to the second step.
?All right, this match is heated up!? Kirk comments. ?Let?s hear the next question, Olmec.?
Olmec now asks:
?According to our legend, did Paul Revere ride through the streets shouting: ?The English are approaching,? ?The British are coming????
Raelyn stomps down and confidently shouts: ?The British are coming!?
?That is correct,? Olmec replies, and the Purple Parrots step down again.
?The Purple Parrots are just one step away from the Temple Games,? Kirk explains. ?We?re lookin? for two teams.  Next question.?
Olmec asks:
?Did Paul send William to hang the lamps in???
Adam rings in: ?Uhh? on the balcony???
?That is not one of our three choices,? Olmec replies. ?The three choices are: The New East Church, the Gold South Church, or the Old North Church.?
Colleen gongs in: ?The Old North Church???
?That is correct,? Olmec replies, and the Green Monkeys move down another step.
?We?ve got a tie on the second-to-last step,? Kirk explains. ?Still time for the other teams to catch up.  Olmec, continue.?
Olmec does so by asking:
?How many lamps did William light???
April stomps down first: ?One if by land, two if by sea!?
?That is not one of the three choices!? Olmec replies testily. ?The three choices are: One, Two, or Three.?
Will rings in: ?Two???
?That is correct!? Olmec shouts, and the Purple Parrots walk down onto the last step.
?One down!? Kirk comments as Will and Raelyn high-five. ?We?ve got one team goin? to the Temple Games, who?s gonna join them: the Green Monkeys, the Blue Barracudas or the Red Jaguars? Olmec, next question.?
Olmec now asks:
?Is the Old North Church in: Philadelphia, Atlanta, or Boston??
Jeff buzzes in: ?Boston???
?That is correct!? Olmec shouts, and the Green Monkeys walk down next to the Purple Parrots on the bottom level.
?Two down!? Kirk announces as the four qualifying players shake hands and high-five. ?Goin? on to the Steps of Knowledge are the Green Monkeys and the Purple Parrots! Red Jaguars and Blue Barracudas gave it a great effort too.  They?re not goin? away empty-handed, we?ve got a nice gift for them, here?s what they get.? Keith, Adam, Kelsey and April will each be receiving a $50 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Nestle.
Kirk stands between the Green Monkeys and the Purple Parrots at the bottom of the Steps of Knowledge. ?These two teams will be competing for the right to enter Olmec?s Temple, and they?re gonna do it right after this!? The camera pans over to the Great Chasm and zooms in on the green balls in the pit before fading to commercial.

Rediscovery EP: The Melted Lamp of Paul Revere
« Reply #2 on: April 16, 2007, 04:32:15 PM »
Kirk stands in front of the Great Chasm with the last four players around him. ?Welcome back to Legends,? he says. ?Now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, so let?s hear it for Colleen and Jeff of the Green Monkeys!? The light-brown-haired girl and blond boy applaud along with the audience. ?And Rhy-lyn and Will of the Purple Parrots!? The long-brown-haired girl high-tens her dark-haired partner.  Raelyn also flashes a bit of a frown at Kirk for mispronouncing her name.
?Okay, you guys can get set up for the second Temple Game, girls go get ready for the first Temple Game,? Kirk says, and Will and Jeff walk off in one direction, and Colleen and Raelyn in another. ?In the Temple Games, teams will be competing for?" he opens his pocket and pulls out a small gold medallion to show to the camera? "Pendants of Life.  The winning team will need these Pendants to protect them from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through the Temple.  There are three Temple Games, and Olmec? tell us about Temple Game #1.?

Olmec begins:
?Paul Revere wasn?t just any normal Minuteman.  A good leader must be able to ride a horse very well and not just pose on one.  Here you will ride a similar horse.  Hold on tight, because when Kirk gives the signal, the horse will begin to spin.  The player that?s still on after 60 seconds? or the player that stays on the longest? wins.?
The camera fades to Kirk, who is standing in front of the mechanical horse machine. ?That's one wild horse? it's spinning, it?s whirling, it's gonna get dizzy,? he comments. ?Let's put 60 seconds on the clock.? The clock then appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen. ?On your mark, get set, GO!?
Colleen and Raelyn hold on tight as the horse begins to turn around, and they manage to make it around seven times. Both girls? fingers begin to slip after a while, but Colleen falls off her horse first, the game ends with 32 seconds still on the countdown clock.
?That's it!? Kirk shouts as the girls step off the safety mats and join him. ?They're dizzy, they're tired, but the Purple Parrots stayed on the longest. The Purple Parrots win a half Pendant of Life!? The audience applauds for a moment. ?Green Monkeys, you had trouble staying on there,? he says to Colleen. ?What happened??
?I? I slipped,? Colleen answers.
?No problem though,? Kirk says, ?cause you can catch up in the next game, it's worth a half Pendant. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2.?

Olmec continues:
?Paul had a long and winding path to ride down to spread the word of the attack.  Although he spent a full night on the roads of Massachusetts, you will see how far you can go in one minute.  When Kirk gives the signal, climb on the wheel and adjust your weight to make the wheel turn.  When the wheel has made one full rotation, it means you have ridden one mile down the path toward Lexington and Concord.
?The player that makes it the most miles toward Lexington and then Concord in 60 seconds? wins.?
?The dizzy doesn?t stop here,? Kirk says. ?Let?s set the clock for 60 seconds.? The clock then appears in the corner of the screen. ?On your mark, get set, GO!?
Will and Jeff scramble on the wheels marked with the show?s insignia, and start to turn them clockwise.  Jeff is on all fours crawling up the side of his wheel, while Will is jogging up the side of his.  They begin falling off after about 25 seconds have elapsed, but Jeff falls more times than Will before the ceiling spotlights flash to indicate that time has expired.
?All right!? Kirk shouts, running over to read the spotters? scoreboards. ?Green Monkeys made it 8 miles to Lexington and Concord, but Purple Parrots made it 9 miles! Purple Parrots win another half Pendant of Life!? The audience applauds again. ?You? uh? well it looked like you were going faster,? Kirk says to Jeff. ?What happened??
?Uhh? I dunno, I guess I fell too much,? Jeff replies.
?Well it?s not over yet though,? Kirk explains. ?You can still catch up, cause this next game is worth a full Pendant.  It?s the third and final game.  Olmec, tell us about it.?

Olmec narrates:
?Paul was also part of an unofficial group of spies who kept tabs on the British troops? movements.  He often gave the other spies coded messages or letters written in invisible ink.  In this game, you must share secret messages with your group of spies.  When Kirk gives the signal, grab a secret message and walk out to meet your partner at the middle of the path.  Then pass the message to your partner, who will slide back and place it in your bin.  Then do it again.
?The team with the most secret messages in their bin after 60 seconds wins.?
?Green Monkeys need this game to tie the game up,? Kirk explains. ?Set the clock for 60 seconds.? The clock then appears in the corner of the screen. ?On your mark, get set, GO!?
As soon as Kirk shouts ?go,? the players walk against the force of the bungee cords attaching them to the walls behind them using the handholds in the raised sides of the tracks.  The players have a lot of trouble walking against the force of the cords, but manage to score the first time after about 20 seconds have passed.  Will passes the first message to Raelyn before Jeff can pass his to Colleen.  After a few more passes are made by both teams, the ceiling lights flash to end the game.
?All right,? Kirk says as he walks down along the space between the tracks and grabs the teams? bins.  The kids run over to join him as soon as they can. ?Green Monkeys need this one to tie up.  They got one, two? three messages, Purple Parrots got one, two, three, four? five messages! They get the full Pendant, that gives them two, the Green Monkeys didn?t have any.  Purple Parrots are goin? to the Temple!? Will and Raelyn high-ten a couple times. ?Looked like you had a real rhythm goin? in that last game,? Kirk comments. ?What was your strategy??
?Well, I was gonna carry the paper,? Will says, ?and we had to go? at the same speed.  If one of us? got dragged back, both of us go back.  We? didn?t want anyone to? um? leave hanging in the middle? and? um? get pulled back? when the other one shows up.?
?Well it really paid off,? Kirk comments. ?You got two Pendants, you?re goin? to the Temple in search of the Melted Lantern.? He then turns to Jeff and Colleen. ?Purple Monkeys gave it a great effort too.  They?re not goin? away empty-handed, here?s what we?ve got for you.? Jeff and Colleen will each be receiving a small prize package provided by Reebok.
Kirk, Will and Raelyn are standing in front of the equipment for the third Temple Game. ?We?ll see if the Purple Parrots can make it through Olmec?s Temple and retrieve the Melted Lamp of Paul Revere right after this!? The camera zooms out and runs past each of the rooms before zooming back in on the Melted Lamp of Paul Revere in the Dark Overlook.

Rediscovery EP: The Melted Lamp of Paul Revere
« Reply #3 on: April 16, 2007, 04:34:33 PM »
Kirk stands in front of the Temple's steps with his hands on Will and Raelyn's shoulders. "Welcome back to Legends," he says to the camera before turning around to talk to Olmec. "Olmec!" he shouts. "The Purple Parrots have proven themselves worthy and earned the right to enter your Temple.  But before they go, can you give them any information about the Temple to help them retrieve the Melted Lamp of Paul Revere?"
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
"You could start by climbing through the Crevasse and climbing down into the Great Chasm.  Crawl through the Chasm, then race into the Forbidden Fountain.  Place the correct bowl to tip the scales, and you could choose to go up into the Burial Pit, or into the Junction of the Secret Shafts.  If you escape, you might have a chance to enter the Switch Inferno.  Hit the right actuator to go upstairs, or plow through the wall and into the Dungeon.
"Climb up the Pharaoh?s Secret Passage into the Dark Overlook, where you can grab the Melted Lamp of Paul Revere.  Correctly place all three torches to open the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey.  Assemble the statue, and you may be headed for the Knights? Barracks.  Place the sword in the correct sheath, and you could advance into the Laser Light Room.  Find the right combination to unleash the power of the laser, and swing on the rope back across the Great Chasm.  Then, pass through the Room of the Temple Gongs, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate.  The choices are yours and yours alone." Olmec pauses for a second here. "You won 2 Pendants in the Temple Games.  Who's going first??
"I am!" Raelyn shouts enthusiastically.
"Very well, Raelyn," replies Olmec, and Raelyn smiles as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "When Kirk gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way towards the Melted Lamp.  Hidden inside the Temple are three ventilation shafts that let out in the Junction of the Secret Shafts, as well as Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms.  You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple? and it'll be Will's turn to enter and try his luck.  If you can reach the Melted Lamp, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish.  Return through the gates with the Melted Lamp of Paul Revere in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded? and here's how:"
?   For just making it into the Temple, they?re both going to get a sports package from Regent sports.
?   If they can grab the Melted Lamp within three minutes, they?re also going to get an XBOX 360 game package.
?   And if they can get the Melted Lamp of Paul Revere out of the Temple before 3 minutes is up, they?ll both be cruising to the Bahamas! A four-day cruise aboard Norwegian Cruise Line, with two pools, volleyball and basketball courts.  Norwegian Cruise Line.  It?s different out there.  A four-day cruise to the Bahamas, for a prize package totaling $14,870!

"Sounds awesome, let?s get ?em to the Bahamas!" Kirk says, excited. "But before you go into the Temple, Raelyn, tell us your strategy, and how you think you'll get to the Melted Lamp."
"Well, I?m gonna try to go up," Raelyn explains, "and? um? just try to go straight across over to get all the way? through, but? um? if there?s a locked door, well? I?m just gonna go down and head all the way over and? climb back up at the end."
"But you?re just going right over to the next room no matter which way," Kirk responds, trying to make sure he understands.
Raelyn nods.
"Well let's see if that works out," Kirk says. "Mouthpieces in.  Will, you might wanna put yours in too.  Never know when you?re gonna have to run in.  Lower the gate, Olmec!"
Olmec moans as he lowers the gate.
"And let's set the clock? for three minutes.  On your mark, get set, GO!"

Raelyn races up the stairs, her long hair flying behind her as she enters the Room of Temple Gongs. ?She?s in the Temple Gongs!? Kirk shouts. ?She?s gotta find a gong and gong it down!? She bangs the gongs starting with the furthest right one, which lights up blue.  The second one lights up purple, and so both doors leading out of the room open.  Raelyn advances into the Great Chasm, grabs the rope to swing across the gap, and then hits the actuator for the door leading into the Burial Pit.  That door doesn?t open, and neither does the one leading into the Laser Light Room.  So Raelyn has to jump down into the chasm and enter the Forbidden Fountain. (2:30) She places a bowl on the higher end of the scales, but the scales don?t slant the other way.  But the second bowl she places on there tips the scales, so both doors open.  Raelyn, sticking with her plan to avoid vertical shifts, runs into the Junction of the Secret Shafts, only to meet the first TEMPLE GUARD!
Raelyn shrieks when the Temple Guard appears.  He runs over to her, gestures as if to demand her Pendant of Life, and she finally gives it after a few seconds.  She then runs across the ramps to try the actuators for both doors leading into the Switch Inferno, but neither one opens; the Junction of the Secret Shafts is a dead end.  But to be sure, she tries each actuator one more time before she backtracks into the Forbidden Fountain and tries to climb up. ?There she goes!? Kirk comments as Raelyn emerges from the sarcophagus in the Burial Pit with 1:45 remaining. ?Up into the Pharaoh?s Pit! Now she knows where she?s goin?!? Raelyn peels away the rest of the sarcophagus?s lid and finds the key.  She immediately uses it on the keypad for the door leading into the Knights? Barracks, but the door does not open.  So she has to stick it on the keypad for the door leading upward, and it opens.  But much to her discontent, Raelyn will have to climb up again into the Laser Light Room.
?Minute Thirty!? Kirk announces as soon as Raelyn sets foot in the Laser Light Room. ?Half-time! I hope she?s halfway there!?
?Go Rae!? Will shouts from the sidelines as Raelyn begins to align the sections of the metal column. ?You can do it!?
?She?s lost her Pendant,? Kirk comments, ?so next time a Temple Guard takes her out, it?ll be time for Will to go in.? The column is perfectly aligned with 1:04 remaining, and a light beam appears as the slab blocking the path to the Knights? Barracks is lowered.  Raelyn walks down the stairs to enter the Knights? Barracks and goes to the front of the room to pick up the sword.
?She?s been lucky on the second try,? Kirk comments as Raelyn removes the sword from the camera-right sheath and places it in the sheath in the head of the middle suit of armor. ?Second try?s a charm again! Into the Silver Monkey! Forty seconds left! She might do it all by herself!? Raelyn enters the Shrine of the Silver Monkey and climbs up onto the shelves to grab the pieces of the statue.  She grabs only the base on the first try and goes back to the front of the room, then looks for the middle piece and places it on top of the base having a little trouble aligning the two pieces. (0:19!) She then grabs the head and jams it down. ?That?s the key! The door?s open!? Kirk shouts.  Raelyn walks over to the door to the Dark Overlook, which remains locked.  She then looks around and finds out that only the vertical passage leading down into the Switch Inferno is open. (0:08!!) She climbs down and runs right over to the breakaway wall to run through to the Dungeon? but we?re out of time!
?Time?s up!? Kirk announces as Raelyn passes through the stone wall. ?You guys gave it a gallant effort.  Will didn?t even get to go into the Temple, but you guys did a great job all day through.  You still get the Regent sports packages just for playing.  And you had a great time, right?? As Kirk says the last sentence, Raelyn appears from offscreen.
?Yeah,? she wheezes.
?All right,? Kirk says. ?Let?s join us again next time for another great Legend of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!? Raelyn takes off her helmet and buries herself in Kirk?s chest and Will claps along with the applauding audience.  The credits then begin to roll.

Rediscovery EP: The Melted Lamp of Paul Revere
« Reply #4 on: April 16, 2007, 04:59:25 PM »
Temple Run Summary
Episode 23px]

Name of Artifact: The Melted Lamp of Paul Revere
Season: 2
Layout: 1 (5 overall)
Result: Failed acquisition
Time Remaining: N/A
Team: Purple Parrots
Pendants Won: 2
Location of Artifact: The Dark Overlook

I have so, so much pity on this team.  They dominated throughout the entire game up until the Temple Run, but it's not that they didn't know what they were doing.  After all, this was one of the most brutal Temple designs ever used in the show, forcing the team to switch floors four times? not including jumping into the Great Chasm? and enter a total TEN rooms just to grab the Lamp.

Furthermore, the placement of the Temple Guards was especially cruel.  Raelyn met the first guard in the dead-end Junction of the Secret Shafts (her plan was to avoid switching floors as much as possible), but she wouldn't have run into another one until the Dungeon, the ninth room on the correct path, which she was only about to enter as time ran out.  I think it's safe to say the production crew didn't simply overstimate the players; they just felt evil that day.

Trivia and Records:
This was the first episode of The Rediscovery in which the frontrunner isn't taken out of the Temple, but doesn't even grab the artifact in time.
