Episode 2: ?The Original Pamphlet of Thomas Paine?

*the camera zooms in on an ancient lush jungle, the palms are moving away as an elephant is heard*

*all the palms are gone, showing Olmec*

Olmec: Legends of the Hidden Temple. With your guide? Kirk Fogg!

*Kirk is shown slidding down a zipline & jumping off into the usual area*

Kirk: Thank you everyone. Thank you Olmec. Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple. The rooms are The rooms are filled with lost treasures protected by mysterious Mayan temple guards. Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple. Which one are we going to hear about today?

Olmec: The Original Pamphlet of Thomas Paine.

Kirk: The Original Pamphlet of Thomas Paine! Well, one of these six teams will have the chance to retrieve the Pamphlet. Will it be *camera zooms into each team as they cheer & the usual* The Red Jaguars? The Blue Barracudas? The Green Monkeys? The Orange Iguanas? The Purple Parrots? Or the Silver Snakes? They?re going to have to pass some tough mental and physical tests, and in the end, only one team will have the right to enter Olmec?s temple, but first they have to cross the moat, and Olmec will tell us how they?ll have to do it today.

Olmec: Each team will have 1 rope. There will be a small "island" (platform) in the middle. On go, one player will swing out to the middle of the island. They will pull a hanging chain, which will release a hooked bridge that was attached to the bottom. Than, you'll walk across the bridge to the other side. Than you're partner will swing across & walk across the bridge to ring the gong *Kirk bangs the Silver Snakes? gong*. The first four teams to hit their gong will go on to the next round.

Kirk: Alright, teams are you ready?!

*the teams cheer*

Kirk: Olmec, are you ready?!

Olmec: Let?s rock!

Kirk: On your marks? get set? GO!!!!!

*the first players all swing out*

*Orange Iguanas fall short, while Red Jaguars & Blue Barracudas can?t balance on the platform*

*Green Monkeys, Purple Parrots, & Silver Snakes all start walking across the bridge while Red Jaguars, Blue Barracudas, & Orange Iguanas all swing again*

*Orange Iguanas fall again while Red Jaguars & Blue Barracudas make it*

*the second player on Green Monkeys, Purple Parrots, & Silver Snakes all get across & bang their gongs in this order: Silver Snakes, Green Monkeys, Purple Parrots*

*the second player of Red Jaguars & Blue Barracudas start while Orange Iguanas pull the chain*

*Red Jaguars falls into the water while they get on the island, giving Blue Barracudas the final edge to bang their gong*

Kirk: That was a tough moat, but going onto the Steps of Knowledge are the Silver Snakes! The Purple Parrots! The Green Monkeys! & The Blue Barracudas! Red Jaguars &  Orange Iguanas, you guys just fell short, but you?ll still be walking home with a prize. *Olmec explains prize*

*the camera changes to the four dry teams on the top of the Steps of Knowledge*

Kirk: As the quest continues, it?s now time for Olmec to tell us about the Original Pamphlet of Thomas Paine. Bur before we get started, pay attention, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you a step closer to Olmec?s Temple.

Olmec: One of the greatest influences of the American Revolution was Thomas Paine. Published on January 10, 1776, Thomas Paine sold many pamphlets entitled ?Common Sense?, which showed many literate people how great it would be to break free.

Woman: Did you hear about ?Common Sense??

Man: Oh yes, I read it, we really should break free.

Olmec: Over 120,000 copies were distributed to the colonists, but the British were not happy.

British Officer: Where is this Thomas Paine?

Thomas: Right here, sir!

British Officer: You are under arrest.

Thomas: And how do I get free? You don?t expect my elderly self to break free, do you?

British Officer: Oh hush now, you just have to give us the original copy of ?Common Sense?, so we can burn it & no more copies can be made!

Thomas: Okey-dokey then!

Olmec: Thomas Paine came up with an elaborate plan in his first night in the slammer & decided to make a quick copy & call it ?the original version?.

Thomas: Um officer?

British Officer: Oh, what do you want now?

Thomas: Just to give you the original copy!

British Officer: *reading the copy* Hm? you?re free!

Olmec: But what the Officer did not know was that Thomas kept the original copy safely in his possession & it eventually made its way to the Temple! Your quest is to retrieve the Original Pamphlet of Thomas Paine & bring it back here!

Kirk: Very well Olmec, but can you tell us where the Original Pamphlet is?

Olmec: The Original Pamphlet of Thomas Paine can be found in the Sacred Safari!

Kirk: OK. Teams: you are standing on the Steps of Knowledge. In a minute, Olmec will ask you a question about today?s legend. If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you. Go ahead, stomp on it!

*Blue Barracudas hit the step*

Kirk: OK, Blue Barracudas, since you rang in first, you would be able to answer. If you?re right, you?ll move down to the next level. If you?re wrong or run out of time, I?m going to give the other teams a chance to answer. The first two teams to make it to the bottom level *Kirk runs down there* will be one step closer to Olmec?s Temple. Olmec, we are now ready for the first question.

Olmec: Was Thomas Paine an influential leader in: The Canadian Revolution, The American Revolution, or the Nintendo Revolution?

Olmec: That is incorrect!

Olmec: That is correct!

*Silver Snakes move down a step*

Purple Parrots: ?The Truth?!

Olmec: That is incorrect!

Green Monkeys: ?The Crisis?!

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Purple Parrots, one more correct answer & you move onto the Temple Games.

Green Monkeys: July 4?

Olmec: That is incorrect.

Silver Snakes: August 2!

Olmec: That is correct!

*Silver Snakes move down to the bottom step*

Kirk: Silver Snakes are the first team to move on. One more team can make it. Everyone have a chance.

Olmec: What happened to the origi-

Blue Barracudas: Thomas Paine kept the original copy & it disappeared & is now in the Temple.

Olmec: That is absolutely correct!

*Blue Barracudas jump down & cheer with the Silver Snakes*

Kirk: Green Monkeys. Purple Parrots, come on down here! You guys gave it a good effort, but came up short, but you won?t be going home empty handed. Here?s what you guys win. *Olmec explains prize*

Kirk: *only Blue Barracudas & Silver Snakes are present* These two teams will be going head to head in the Temple Games, to fight to enter Olmec?s Temple, right after this!

Kirk: Welcome back to Legends. Now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest. But before we get started, let?s find out a little about our teams. On the Blue Barracudas we have Dominic, who is a runner, who holds the school record for the ? mile! That?s fast! His partner is Brooke, who likes to act in productions & wants to be on Broadway!  On the Silver Snakes, we have Colin, who plays basketball & wants to be a teacher. His partner is Karen, who likes to read & wants to be a lawyer. Now, guys get ready for the first Temple Game, girls get ready for the second. Okay, go get ready for the Temple Games, I?m going to explain what?s gonna happen. Teams are competing in temple games to win: Pendants of Life. *shows two pendants* They?re going to need those pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded temple guards as they make their way through the temple. There are three temple games. Olmec, tell us about temple game number one.

Olmec: Thomas Paine got out of jail lucky. If he escaped, he?d have to fight guards. We?re gonna have the guards fight now! Each person is standing on a beam with a stick. Try to knock your opponent off the beam with the stick. If you fall, your opponent gets a point. At the end of 60 seconds, whichever player has the most points wins a ? Pendant of Life!

Kirk: This is going to be a tough one! On your marks? get set? swing!

*Dominic & Colin start swinging at each other*

*Dominic gets Colin off first*

*Colin gets back on & falls off shortly after*

*Colin finally knocks Dominic off the beam*

*Dominic & Colin are going at it for a while when Colin slips off & time runs out*

Kirk: Alrighty then, let?s count the score. Blue Barracudas had 3. Silver Snakes only had 1. The Blue Barracudas win the ? Pendant of Life! Don?t worry, the Silver Snakes can catch up in the second game worth another ? Pendant. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game number two.

Olmec: Thomas Paine worked with many of the presidents of the United States when America became a country. Now you are going to work with the presidents. Kind of? Each of you will be attached to a pulley (you?ll be on the ground, the pulley makes like a 90 degree angle) with a lot of sandbags on the other side. On go, you?ll run to the other side, making the sandbags go up, letting you move, & grab a tile. Each tile has a president?s face on it: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Franklin Roosevelt, & John Kennedy. When you grab a tile, run back to the start & put the president?s face on the wall. Keep doing this until you get all 4 tiles & put the presidents in the order they served our country. The first person to get all 4 right, or whoever gets the most right in 60 seconds wins.

Kirk: Ahh, they gotta pull their own weight to win! On your marks? get set? GO!!!!!

*Brooke & Karen start running, but are struggling with the sandbags*

*Karen gets the first tile, but Brooke is right behind her*

*Brooke beats Karen in the spring back & both of them put the ?George Washington? tile in the right order*

*30 seconds are left, as Brooke takes more of a lead, but Karen is still close*

*Both get the ?Franklin Roosevelt? tile, but put it in the wrong place*

*10 seconds are left & Brooke gets the ?Thomas Jefferson? tile last second with Karen behind*

Kirk: Time?s up! The order is Washington-Jefferson-Roosevelt-Kennedy. Let?s see. Blue Barracudas had Washington-Jefferson-blank-Roosevelt. So you got 2/4 right. Silver Snakes, Jefferson didn?t count in time, so you had Washington-blank-blank-Roosevelt. You got 1/4 right; Blue Barracudas win the ? Pendant of Life! Let?s go to the final game, worth a full pendant! Olmec, tell us about it!

Olmec: Thomas Paine was imprisoned in jail for one night. Now, the guys are going to be in jail & the girls will save them! The girls are attached to a bungee cord. On go, climb up the ramp, but watch out, Thomas Paine was in jail on a rainy night, so there will be a constant flow of water against you! Climb up the slippery ramp with the key. When you get to the top, unlock the gate & slide down. Then, your partner will slide down from inside the jail & put the original copy of the pamphlet into the bucket. The first team to get the pamphlet in the bucket wins!

Kirk: Imprisoned on a rainy night, sounds familiar. Just kidding! Silver Snakes need this to force the tiebreaker. On your marks? get set? GO!!!!!

*Brooke & Karen start climbing up the ramp, while water is flowing down it*

*Karen gets a lead but Brooke catches up*

*Brooke gets to the top & puts the key in the lock but slips down*

*Dominic starts trying to get the door open, but he can?t*

*Karen starts to get to the top & she unlocks the door & opens it*

*Karen slides down & Colin follows as he slams the pamphlet into the bucket*

Kirk: Wow, that was close! She raced up & slipped down, giving Karen the edge. Silver Snakes win the full Pendant of Life! Now, each team has a full pendant, let?s go to the tiebreaker!

*the Tiebreaker Podium is brought out*

Kirk: OK, Blue over here, Silver over there. Here?s how the tiebreaker works. Olmec will read a question about today?s legend. If you think you know the answer, bang the gong. Then you?ll have three seconds to answer the question. If you get it right, you & your partner will be able to search for the Original Pamphlet of Thomas Paine. If you get it wrong, the other team has a chance to answer. Olmec, tell us the question.

Olmec: Was Thomas Paine imprisoned in jail-

Kirk: Silver Snakes.

Colin: Imprisoned in jail.

Olmec: I?m sorry, that is not one of the three choices.

Kirk: Blue Barracudas.

Brooke: Can he finish the question?

Kirk: Olmec, finish the question.

Olmec: Was Thomas Paine imprisoned in jail for his works in: ?The Crisis?, ?Common Sense?, or The Declaration of Independence?

Dominic: Common Sense!

Olmec: That is? correct!

Kirk: Good job, Blue Barracudas! Silver Snakes, hey, you guys did your best & that?s what really counts. But you wont? walk away empty handed! *Olmec explains prize*

Kirk: *only Blue Barracudas are present* We're gonna see if the Blue Barraucdas can retrieve the Original Pamphlet of Thomas Paine, and we're gonna do it right after this!

Kirk: Welcome back. Brooke & Dominic have proven themselves worthy and have earned themselves the right to enter Olmec?s temple. But before we get started, Olmec, can you give the Blue Barracudas any clues about your Temple & how to retrieve the Original Pamphlet of Thomas Paine?

Olmec: You can start off in the Miner?s Cave. Crawl through the tunnel to make it into the Pit of Anguish. If you can get across, you can head into the Crocodile?s Mouth! Grab the fish from the walls & put them into the crocodile?s mouth & you can go up into the Ranch! Or you can head into the Anaconda?s Sanctuary. Untangle the snake & attach it to the wall & go into the Sacred Safari, where you can grab the Original Pamphlet of Thoams Paine! Find the key in the elephant?s mouth, but beware of the Temple Guards, disguised as elephants! You can go up, or bust through the wall into the Battlefield! Jump on the trampoline to reach the ladder in the Ninja?s Secret Training Chamber & climb into the Ladder of Doom! Put the correct torch into the torch holder & enter the Shriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine of the Siiiiiiilver Monkey! Assemble the statue & go into the Chamber of the Royal Containers. Dump the containers on the floor & find the key to go down, or head into the Observation Tower! Line up the telescope with the markings on the wall to open the door to cross the Stumps of Dejection! Use the 2 planks to get across the four stumps, or jump back into the Pit of Anguish. Race thorough the Hammered Nails & back to the Temple Gates! The choices are yours & yours alone! You won one pendant into the Temple. Who is going first?

Brooke: I am!

Olmec: Very well, Brooke! When Kirk gives the signal, you?ll race through the gate into the temple and make your way towards the Original Pamphlet of Thomas Paine. Hidden inside the temple are temple guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you?re caught without a pendant, you?ll be taken out of the temple and it will be Dominic?s turn to try his luck. If you can reach the artifact, all the doors in the temple will instantly unlock, and the temple guards will vanish. Return through the gates with the artifact within three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded. And here?s how! *Olmec explains three prizes*

Kirk: The tough & tenacious Blue Barracudas are gonna try to get that pamphlet! On your marks? get set? GO!!!!!

*Brooke goes up the stairs & slides into the Miner?s Cave*

*she tries both tunnels & realizes she has to go up into the Hammered Nails with 2:49*

*Brooke grabs the hammer & gets the first nail to open the door with 2:45*

*Brooke grabs the planks & falls down into the Pit of Anguish*

*She goes into the Crocodile?s Mouth*

Kirk: Oh, she?s just two rooms away from the pamphlet!

*Brooke gets the 9 fish & throws them into the crocodile?s mouth*

Kirk: Where will she go now?

*Brooke climbs up into the Ranch with 2:31 left*

*she saddles the horse & goes into the Chamber of the Royal Containers*

*she starts to empty the pots & gets the key*

*she opens the trapdoor & the Temple Guard pops out of it*

*Brooke gets so scared that she flails her arms in the air & the Pendant flies out of the Temple*

*Dominic starts racing up the stairs with 2:19 left when the Temple Guard takes Brooke*

Kirk: *doesn?t realize Dominic left* Oh, go Dominic!

*Dominic blazes through Brooke?s path, but goes straight to the Hammered Nails, & makes it to the Chamber of the Royal Containers with 1:58 left*

*Brooke runs away from Kirk & grabs the Pendant on the ground*

*she tries to pull an Atocha & tosses the Pendant to Dominic*

*the Pendant bounces off the rail & goes back to Brooke*

*Dominic descends into the Anaconda?s Sanctuary to try to get a better toss*

*before Brooke can do anything, a Temple Guard comes out & captures Dominic with 1:36 left*

Kirk: Oh, that?s it, that?s it! Come on over here Brooke! Dominic! Tough luck, but that?s how the cookie happened to crumble. See you next time on another great Legends of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!

*Brooke looks like she?s gonna cry & Dominic throws his helmet to the ground*

Fan Summary:
The Original Pamphlet of Thomas Paine

Name of Artifact: The Original Pamphlet of Thomas Paine
Season: 4
Layout: 7
Result: Caught by Two Temple Guards
Time Remaining: 1:36
Team: Blue Barracudas
Pendants Won: 1
Location of Artifact: The Sacred Safari
Temple Diagram:
Temple Run Summary: This was one of the most unfair runs in history. Brooke raced through the Temple. She went up from the Miner's Cave, than went into the Crocodile's Mouth. She went up to the Ranch & across to the Chamber of the Royal Containers. The Temple Guard scared her, so she accidentally threw her Pendant out of the Temple! So Dominic went with no Pendant. Brooke tried to pull off an Atocha, but with that far of a throw, she just missed. Dominic went down into the Anaconda's Sanctuary to try to get a better catch, but a Temple Guard caught him before he could do anything. It can't get more unfair.

Side Notes:

A couple on this episode. This is the only episode which Pendants are never used for extra lives. It is the fastest loss & the only time took two Temple Guards to end the run. It is also (in my opinion) the episode featuring the two most mad players (Brooke was ready to cry & Dominic threw his helmet on the ground).

Episode Fanfic written by Olmec. Episode Summary format and Temple Diagram in the style of nicklegends.
