Rediscovery EP: The Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart

Author's Note: This is one of the episodes in my independent project.  If you have any complaints, first thing to do is to go see the episode directory here:
Legends: The Rediscovery

Episode 33px]

The camera maneuvers through a thick rainforest to stop in front of an ancient temple.  A giant stone head next to the gate of the temple begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE! With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is NOW!"

On this final word, Kirk appears from behind the Temple Guard door in the Dungeon and runs straight out into the foreground of the stage to greet the crowd. "Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Nice to see you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple.  The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards.  Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple.  Which legend are we gonna hear about today?"

Olmec replies:
"The Legend of the Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart."

"Ah, the Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart!" Kirk says in response. "Well one of these six teams will have the chance to retrieve the Helmet.  Will it be:
"Randy and Kristina of the Red Jaguars?" the camera pans to each team in order?
"Billy and Christina of the Blue Barracudas,
"Jack and Jessica of the Green Monkeys,
"Mark and Julie of the Orange Iguanas,
"Jonathan and Lucia of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Jason and Tina of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "and in the end, one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  First, they must cross the Moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today:
"Each team is sitting in front of a dragon tunnel that stretches across the Moat.  When I say go, one player from each team will crawl in the start of the tunnel and he?ll make his way all across the Moat.  Then his partner'll crawl in and make his way through the dragon tunnel."
"When the second player comes out of the dragon mouth and climbs onto the deck, it's his job to run over here and hit the gong." He slams down on the Red Jaguars' gong to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will be going on to the Steps of Knowledge.  ARE YOU READY!"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Olmec, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"Ready, willing and able," Olmec replies.
"All right," Kirk replies. "Teams: on your marks, get set? GO!"

The teams? first players crawl into the tunnels and head through at the same pace, only having trouble making it over the raised bumps in the path.  At least the tunnels are slicked with soap and water to make maneuvers easier. ?It?s gonna be a race to the finish, I can tell!? Kirk says in his play-by-play commentary.  While a few teams get a little stuck in the curves, the boy on the Blue Barracudas becomes the very first player to make it across, with the boys on the Purple Parrots and Silver Snakes making it through only a little while later.  The boy on the Green Monkeys pulls himself out of the tunnel about ten seconds later, the boy on the Orange Iguanas five seconds after him.
?The key is? not to get caught in the lumps,? Kirk comments as the girl on the Red Jaguars emerges from the mouth of the dragon head. ?I think that?s gonna determine it!? After another twenty seconds, the girl on the Blue Barracudas crawls out of the tunnel, and her partner goes over to hit the gong. ?We got one team? two? three? We got our four teams!? Kirk says as the other teams hit the gongs at almost the exact same time.  The camera pans to show him standing with the Red Jaguars near their lit-up gong. ?Whoa, Red Jaguars, it came down to the last second! Going on to the Steps of Knowledge are the Red Jaguars? and the Blue Barracudas?? the camera briefly shows each of the other qualifying teams? ?and the Orange Iguanas? and the Purple Parrots! The Green Monkeys and Silver Snakes gave it a great effort too.  We?ve got a nice gift for them for playing and here?s what it is.? Jack, Tina, Jason and Jessica will each be receiving a $50 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Skechers footwear.

Rediscovery EP: The Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart
« Reply #1 on: May 03, 2007, 04:32:06 PM »
The four teams are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge accompanied by Kirk. "As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about the Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart.  But pay attention teams, because your knowledge of the Legend can bring you one step closer to Olmec's Temple."
Olmec begins to tell the legend:
"One of the fiercest kings of England was Richard the Lion Heart.  He was the fourth son of the king Henry II, and no one expected he?d end up on the throne.  But he did, by overthrowing his father, and he brought honor to the House of Plantagenet.
"Richard was famous for fighting against Sultan Saladin in the Crusades, but that?s not all.  People often believed he was related to the legendary King Arthur, and that worked well for him when he drew a treaty with Tancred, the king of Sicily.  To forget Richard?s attempts to seize the island, they exchanged gifts.  Tancred gave Richard a small treasure chest filled with silver, and Richard gave Tancred a sword and helmet which he claimed belonged to King Arthur himself.  The helmet and sword were actually both Richard?s, but Tancred never found out.  After he died, the sword disappeared, but the helmet ended up in the Temple.  You must find the Helmet and bring it back here."

"Thank you Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes telling the legend. "But where is the Helmet?"
Olmec replies:
"The Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart can be found in the Dragon?s Lair." The camera zooms in on the Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart lying on the front railing in the Dragon?s Lair, then fades back to Kirk.

"All right," Kirk begins, walking down the steps. "Teams, you're standing on the Steps of Knowledge, and in a second, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're right, you're gonna move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance to answer.  The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  All right Olmec, we're ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
?Was Richard the Lion Heart king of: India, England, or The Netherla???
Billy rings in: ?England.?
?Correct,? Olmec replies.
?Okay, step down!? Kirk shouts, and the Blue Barracudas move down to the second step. ?Remember, you?re gonna have to stomp down hard on that marking to ring in.  Next question.?
Olmec asks:
?Which of these wars did Richard the Lion Heart lead English forces in: The Revolutionary War, The Crimean War, or???
Julie interrupts Olmec, but hesitates before answering: ?The Crimean War???
?Incorrect,? replies Olmec. ?The other two choices are: The Revolutionary War, or The Crusades.?
Billy buzzes in: ?The Crusades.?
?That is correct,? Olmec answers, and the Blue Barracudas move down to the third step.
?Next correct response and the Blue Barracudas are goin? to the Temple Games,? Kirk narrates. ?Next question, Olmec.?
Olmec now asks:
?In the Crusades, did the Europeans fight against: Sultan Suleiman, Sultan Saladin, or Sultan Said??
Jonathan stomps down first: ?Sultan Suleiman???
?Incorrect,? answers Olmec.
Billy gongs in: ?Um? Sultan Saladin???
?That is correct!? yells Olmec, and the Blue Barracudas move down to the bottommost level.
?Whoo! Just like that, the Blue Barracudas are going on to the Temple Games,? Kirk replies. ?We need one more team, will it be the Red Jaguars, the Purple Parrots or the Orange Iguanas? Next question, Olmec.?
Olmec now asks:
?Did Richard later try to seize the island kingdom of: Sicily, Sardinia, or Indonesia??
After a moment with no attempts to ring in, Lucia stomps down first: ?Sar? dinia???
?Incorrect,? Olmec answers.
Mark gongs in: ?Sicily???
?Correct,? Olmec replies, and the Orange Iguanas move down to the second level.
?Okay, Orange Iguanas on the board,? Kirk comments. ?But plenty of time still for the other teams to catch up.  Next question.?
Olmec asks:
?At that time, was the king of Sicily: Tannh?user, Tancred, or Tangerine??
Kristina rings in and confidently screams: ?TANCRED!?
?Correct!? Olmec replies a little more loudly than is usual, and the Red Jaguars move down to the second step.
?Purple Parrots can still catch up,? Kirk reminds the audience. ?Olmec, continue.?
Olmec does so by asking:
?Which of these legendary kings was Richard believed to be descended from: William the Conquer???
Julie stomps down very early, but blanks and says nothing before a bell sounds.
?The three choices,? Olmec then says, ?are William the Conqueror, King Arthur, or Charlem?.?
Jonathan buzzes in: ?King Arthur.?
?Correct,? answers Olmec, and the Purple Parrots move down to the second step.
?Well, all tied up on the second step!? Kirk comments. ?Olmec, next question.?
And, given the command, Olmec asks:
?Was King Arthur?s kingdom named???
Kristina stomps down and yells: ?CAMELOT!?
?That is correct,? Olmec answers, and the Red Jaguars move down to the third step.
?Red Jaguars are only one step away from the Temple Games,? Kirk explains. ?Still time for the other teams.  Next question.?
Olmec continues:
?To end the fight against Tancred, Richard gave him a sword that he said was once King Arthur?s??
Kristina is first to buzz in yet again: ?King Arthur?s sword!?
?That is not one of our three choices,? Olmec answers. ?Was that sword called: Hauteclaire, Durendal, or Excalibur??
Jonathan gongs in: ?Excalibur.?
?That is correct,? answers Olmec, and the Purple Parrots walk down onto the third level.
?Okay, Purple Parrots are now only one step away from the Temple Games,? Kirk narrates. ?Orange Iguanas can still catch up.  Olmec, let?s keep it going.?
Olmec asks:
?Was Richard?s father: Henry I, Henry II, or Henry VIII??
Julie stomps down and guesses: ?Henry? II???
?That is correct,? Olmec answers, and the Orange Iguanas also move down to the second-lowest level.
?All tied up on the bottom step!? Kirk announces. ?Next correct response goes to the Temple Games.  Olmec, next question.?
Olmec asks:
?Was Richard the Lion Heart?s royal family named: Plantagenet, Tudor, or Hanover??
After a moment of hesitation, Mark rings in: ?Plan? tag-in-net???
?That is correct!? Olmec shouts, and the Orange Iguanas move down beside the Blue Barracudas on the bottommost step.
?That?s it, there?s out two teams!? Kirk announces, walking up the side of the bottom step to stand behind the two qualifying teams. ?We got the Blue Barracudas and the Orange Iguanas! Red Jaguars and Purple Parrots gave it a great effort too.  We got a nice gift for them and here?s what it is.? Randy, Lucia, Kristina and Jonathan will each be receiving a copy of Monster House on DVD.
Kirk is standing behind the Blue Barracudas and the Orange Iguanas at the bottom of the Steps of Knowledge. ?These two teams will be playing for the right to enter Olmec?s Temple,? he says, ?and they?re gonna do it right after this!? The camera pans up to the Laser Light Room and zooms in on the metal column there before fading to commercial.

Rediscovery EP: The Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart
« Reply #2 on: May 03, 2007, 04:54:37 PM »
The camera shows Kirk standing between the two qualifying teams in front of the Mine Shaft. ?Welcome back to Legends!? he says. ?Now, of course, the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, so let?s hear it for Mark and Julie of the Orange Iguanas!? The dark-haired boy and short, strawberry-blond girl high-five each other. ?And Billy and Christina of the Blue Barracudas!? The wavy-brown-haired girl and the short, brown-haired boy clap along with the audience.
?Now, go get ready for the Temple Games,? Kirk says as the players walk offscreen, ?and I'll explain what's gonna happen here.  Now, in the Temple Games, these teams will be competing to win?" he opens his pocket and pulls out a small gold medallion to show to the camera? "Pendants of Life.  The winning team will need those Pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through the Temple.  There are three Temple Games, and Olmec will tell us about the first one.?

Olmec begins:
?When Richard the Lion Heart fought in the Crusades, he and his men had to take down Sultan Saladin?s enormous army.  In this game, you will take down an opposing force of slightly smaller proportions.  When Kirk gives the signal, load your slingshot and fire a cannonball at one of the soldiers on the wall.  Then reload your slingshot and do it again.
?The first player to knock down all four soldiers? or the player that?s knocked down the most soldiers in 60 seconds? wins.?
?Okay, they?re gonna be knockin? down soldiers,? Kirk says. ?Let?s put 60 seconds on the clock.? The clock appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen. ?Oh, better get outta the way? don?t wanna get hit by a cannonball.? He runs offscreen to the right side. ?On your mark, get set, GO!?
Christina and Mark load their cannonballs and immediately take aim, but their first cannonballs slip out of the slingshots before the shots can be released.  After a couple attempts, the first targets are knocked down.  Many of the cannonballs either slip out of the slingshots or miss the targets entirely, but a few successful shots do connect within the time limit.
?Okay, that?s it! Time?s up!? Kirk shouts when the ceiling spotlights flash to end the game.  He runs over to meet the players and announce the final score. ?Okay, looks like Blue Barracudas got three soldiers down, Orange Iguanas got three soldiers down? it?s a tie! They each get a half Pendant of Life!? The audience applauds for a moment. ?The next game is also worth one half of a Pendant.  Olmec, tell us about it.?

Olmec continues:
?Getting to any battle site wasn?t easy for Richard and his men.  They would sometimes have to survive through deserts, or travel through treacherous swamps but today, you must make your way through this bamboo forest.  When Kirk gives the signal, put your bamboo sword behind your head and make your way through the forest.  Whenever you come to two shoots, you must find a way to maneuver between or around them, keeping your sword behind your head and both of your hands on it.
?The first player to exit the bamboo forest? or the player that?s closest to the end after 60 seconds wins.?
?It looks kinda cramped in there,? Kirk says. ?Hope they?ll make it out alive.  Let?s set the clock for 60 seconds.? The clock appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen. ?On your mark, get set, GO!?
Billy and Julie begin to make their way through the forest, trying to spend as little time as possible maneuvering between each pair of oddly bent shoots.  Billy seems to have a better ability to move through smaller spaces than does Julie, and he does make it out first with 35 seconds left.
?All right, that was quick!? Kirk comments, running over to meet with the players as Julie emerges from the other forest further right onscreen. ?Blue Barracudas made it first, so that gives them a half Pendant of Life!? The audience applauds again. ?So Blue Barracudas got a full Pendant, Orange Iguanas got a half Pendant, but this next is worth a full Pendant.  Whoever wins goes to the Temple.?

Olmec narrates:
?In the treaty ending the battle with Sicily, Tancred and Richard the Lion Heart exchanged several gifts.  In this game, you will switch a few gifts as well.  When Kirk gives the signal, grab a treasure, and run out to meet your partner at the middle of the path.  Then, pass the treasure to your partner, who will slide back and place it in your treasure box.  Then go back and do it again.
?The team with the most treasures in their treasure box after 60 seconds wins.?
The camera segues to Kirk standing between the two tracks, with the treasure boxes very close by. ?This is for the Temple,? he says. ?And if it ties up, the Blue Barracudas go to the Temple.  Let?s put the 60 seconds on the clock.? The clock then appears onscreen. ?On your mark, get set, GO!?
This game is no easy task for these teams, as the cords are only just long enough so that the players can meet in the middle.  Although the teams each scored a couple times before the ceiling lights flash to end the game, successful transfers were few and far between.
?Okay! Stop right there!? Kirk says, running over to count the scores as spotters free the players from their equipment. ?So Blue Barracudas have?? he reaches into the treasure chest and pulls out a miniature shield and gold lighthouse figurine? ?two, and the Orange Iguanas have?? he pulls a jewel-encrusted sword hilt and pearl necklace? ?they have two! It?s another tie, that gives Blue Barracudas two Pendants, the Orange Iguanas had a Pendant and a half.  The Blue Barracudas are goin? to the Temple!? Billy and Christina, now unfastened from the equipment, high-ten a few times as Kirk goes over to meet the Orange Iguanas. ?Orange Iguanas gave it an awesome effort too.  Here?s what we?ve got for them.? Mark and Julie will each be receiving a small prize package from Regent sports.
Kirk is standing in front of the track for the third Temple Game, with the Blue Barracudas hopping the raised wall to join him. ?We?ll see if the mighty Blue Barracudas can blaze through Olmec?s Temple and retrieve the Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart,? he says, ?right after this!? The camera fades to a close-up on the Blue Barracudas torch at the end of the Moat, then fades to commercial.

Rediscovery EP: The Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart
« Reply #3 on: May 03, 2007, 04:56:20 PM »
Kirk stands in front of the Temple's stairs with his hands on Billy and Christina's shoulders. "Welcome back to Legends," he says to the camera before turning around to talk to Olmec. "Olmec!" he shouts. "The Blue Barracudas blazed through the Temple Games, and now have proven themselves worthy and earned the right to enter your Temple.  But before they go, can you offer them any clues about the Temple to help them retrieve the Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart?"
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
?You could start by climbing through the Crevasse and climbing down into the Mine Shaft.  Throw enough rocks into the bucket to lift the slab, then race into the Crystal Cave.  Pull down the correct icicle, and you could choose to go up into the Dragon?s Lair, where you can grab Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart, or? climb through into the Junction of Secret Shafts.  If you escape, you might have a chance to enter the Switch Inferno.  Hit the right actuator to go upstairs, or plow through the wall and into the Dungeon.
?There, climb up the Pharaoh?s Secret Passage into the Dark Overlook, and correctly place all three torches to open the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey.  Assemble the statue, and you may be headed for the Knights? Barracks.  Place the sword in the correct sheath, and you could advance into the Laser Light Room.  Find the right combination to unleash the power of the laser, and run across the Bridge.  Then, pass through the Room of Temple Gongs, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate.  The choices are yours and yours alone.? Olmec pauses for a second here. "You won 2 Pendants in the Temple Games.  Who's going first??
"I am," Christina says.
"Very well Christina," replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "When Kirk gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way toward the Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart.  Hidden inside the Temple are three ventilation shafts that let out in the Junction of the Secret Shafts, as well as Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms.  You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple? and it'll be Billy's turn to enter and try his luck.  If you can reach the Helmet, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock and the Temple Guards will vanish.  Return through the gates with the Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded? and here's how:"
?   For just getting into the Temple, they?re both going to get a Regent sports package.
?   If they can reach the Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart in 3 minutes, they?re also going to get XBOX 360 game packages, complete with two new games.
?   And if they can bring the Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart out of the Temple before three minutes is up, they?ll both be going to Quebec City! They?ll be staying for three days at Delta Quebec, with an indoor exercise room, an outdoor heated pool and an underground mall and they?ll be there during the Carnaval de Qu?bec.  Delta Quebec, for a prize package totaling $11,634!

"Ooh, Quebec, let?s get ?em there!" Kirk says, excited. "So, Christina, let?s get you out in front.  Both of you put your mouthpieces in.  Let?s lower the gate, Olmec!"
Olmec moans as he lowers the gate, and the blue lights on him are turned off.
"And let's put three minutes on the clock.? The countdown clock appears in the corner of the screen. ?On your mark, get set, GO!"

Christina passes through the Temple Gate and disappears into the Crevasse. ?There she goes!? Kirk shouts. ?They got two Pendants, how far can that? Oh! TEMPLE GUARD!?
Christina screams when the Temple Guard hiding in the Crevasse grabs her ankle.  Hesitantly, she hands over her Pendant of Life, then crawls around to hit the door actuators, but unfortunately, neither door leading into the Mine Shaft opens. ?Looks like she?ll have to go up!? Kirk comments as Christina climbs up the ladder to enter the Room of Temple Gongs. ?Forget the Rock Quarry, she?ll have to go another way? should be a fast game for her, she runs four miles!? She immediately hits the gong furthest right to the camera, and it lights up blue. ?That?s it, she gets to go on into the Troubled Bridge!? She runs across the Bridge, hits the actuator for the Laser Light Room and enters with 2:20 remaining.  She jogs over to the metal column, begins aligning the noticeably lighter areas of each segment, and once the column is perfectly aligned, the dome emits a laser beam and Christina moves into the Knights? Barracks. (2:02) She looks around for a second, then grabs the sword as directed by Kirk.  She places the sword in the sheath stuck in the camera-right suit of armor?s helmet, opening the door into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey, but the armor?s gauntlets grab her and a voice bellows ?GOT YOU!?? the armor houses a TEMPLE SPIRIT!
?Woah! Temple Spirit! Go Billy!? Kirk shouts, and Billy enters the Temple. ?Go Billy, fly like the wind!? He slides down into the Crevasse, maneuvers through and climbs up into the Room of Temple Gongs, runs across the Bridge and through the Laser Light Room.  After a second, he enters the Knights? Barracks, where he hesitates and momentarily backs up into the Laser Light Room. ?You don?t wanna go back, you have to go forward!? Kirk shouts.  So he turns around, enters the Knights? Barracks and resolves to go into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey via the door that Christina opened as she was taken out. (1:20) He gets to work grabbing the pieces of the statue one at a time, but has a little difficulty aligning the middle piece.  After a short delay, he jams the head in, causing all the doors leading out of that room to open, and he runs into the Dark Overlook.
?A minute left!? Kirk shouts, with Christina nervously watching. ?He has to put the torches in place! With 58 seconds!? Billy grabs the torches one at a time, and slowly places them in the pedestals in the front of the room, each one lights up as soon as it is fit into a pedestal.  The Pharaoh?s Secret Passage opens up, and Billy jumps in and slides into the Dungeon with about 29 seconds left.  He carefully walks across the tarp and busts through the breakaway wall to enter the Switch Inferno. (0:22)
?I don?t think he?s gonna make it!? Kirk shouts, and Christina can be seen crossing her fingers.  Billy begins hitting actuators on the back wall, having to jump up to reach two of them.  He then moves to the wall on which the door leading into the Junction of the Secret Shafts lies, and begins pressing the actuators there.  The second one he hits on that wall opens a door leading into the Junction of the Secret Shafts.  Billy notices that it opens and crawls through to enter the room.  He runs across to enter the Crystal Cave? but we?re out of time!
?Oh! So close!? Kirk says. ?And they were only two rooms behind! They still get the sports packages, and we gotta get outta here.  Join us next time for other great Legends of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!? The camera pans to the Crystal Cave, where part of the headdress of a Temple Guard can be seen in the corner of the room, then shows different parts the Mine Shaft and the Dragon?s Lair as the credits roll.

Rediscovery EP: The Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart

Temple Run Summary
Episode 33px]

Name of Artifact: The Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart
Season: 2
Layout: 2 (6 overall)
Result: Failed acquisition
Time Remaining: N/A
Team: Blue Barracudas
Pendants Won: 2
Location of Artifact: The Dragon's Lair

There's not much to say about this Temple Run except that the players cleared an impressive number of rooms even though they didn't get to the Helmet in time.  However, this was not because they were that fast, but because they were lucky when working on several of the objectives.  Speed would've helped as well, though, considering that they could only get halfway through the Junction of the Secret Shafts before time ran out.

Trivia and Records:
This is the first Temple design which forced players to enter the artifact room in the center of the Temple by climbing up from the bottom room of the central column.  If the second runner Billy did get to the Helmet in time, he would've entered every room of the Temple.  Also, Billy performed the first of only two completions of the Dark Overlook's objective.

I guess that's a variation of the name.  I don't think there's any single undisputed form of the name.
