The Dark Forest / Why I fell off the face of the forum
« on: August 09, 2013, 10:34:30 AM »
Making a long overdue check-in on the forums.  I really didn't think it'd be almost three months since I even posted last, but let's face it, my interest in Legends is shot. I did watch the Legends episodes on '90s Are All That a few days ago, but it didn't really spark any interest, so I'm not sure if I'll really have anything to add to discussions of the show or whatnot.  Either way, I didn't really mean to put off updating people on what I've been up to or where I've been, but here's a few things I've been doing over the last few months:

- Taking prescribed antidepressants to muster up the energy to look for a job among other things
- Getting back into '90s first-person shooters like Doom and Descent, including playing them competitively online
- Keeping my interest in metal alive and well, including reviewing a song every night to build up writing skills
- Attending various career center seminars to help me figure out how to better market myself as a job seeker
- Reconnecting with friends offline and from other places online
- Renewing my enthusiasm for art with a new comic story called Hell Is Other Demons, which I intend to get off the ground for once

A lot of what I've been doing has been art- or music-related when I'm not gaming the night away, so between all those things and having no other way to contact most of you guys, I really haven't kept in touch very well and I'm sorry about that.  I might stick around for a while and check in from time to time, but I'd definitely like to stay in touch with some of you if there's some alternate way to do it.  I have AIM, Skype, Facebook and a deviantART account if any of those are doable.  Just PM me to ask for the Facebook account if you'd prefer to keep in contact that way, but I'll be happy to add you as a contact in any of those places since I'll probably be more active there than here.

Sorry I wasn't online at all yesterday, guys.  It's more than just being busy, because my laptop crapped out and now it won't even give me a login screen.  I'm typing this from the library on campus in the middle of working on my term paper, which I had to restart from scratch because I hadn't backed up my files after starting it.  Hopefully I won't lose everything, but I'll see once Tech Support opens in about a half hour.

If worse comes to worst, my laptop will have to be sent directly to Dell for repairs, but only after I'm back home for break (thankfully, I go back Wednesday).  We'll see how it goes, but before I get back to work on the paper, I just want to thank everyone who submitted answers to help the research along.  I should be back in a matter of days. :)

The Dark Forest / Short survey for a Linguistics term paper
« on: April 26, 2012, 11:50:54 PM »
Nothing too big, I just want to see who might reply to this with some answers to help me out.  I've got a term paper to write for my Linguistics class, and I'm trying to base it on a little survey of plural endings that people use.  So, I've written fifteen terms, and all I want you to do is give me a private message with each in the plural form you usually use for the words.

Please don't look the words up until after you've sent the message off. Just think of the form you'd most likely use to turn each word into a plural, but try not to overthink it as you're doing so.  Many of these have more than one acceptable answer.  But even then, I'm not trying to judge anyone's intelligence or knowledge with this, simply to analyze why one ending might be used over another.  That said, here are the words:

1. octopus
2. samurai
3. larva
4. millennium
5. index
6. stigma
7. virus
8. thesis
9. moose
10. focus
11. caucus
12. sphinx
13. white dwarf
14. genus
15. phenomenon

The Dark Forest / National Novel Writing Month 2011
« on: October 23, 2011, 12:34:40 AM »
http://www.nanowrimo.org

I'm not sure if anybody here has heard of this before, but from what I can gather, National Novel Writing Month (or NaNoWriMo for short) is basically a writing challenge that encourages participants to create first and proofread later. The real goal is to write at least 50,000 words of text over the month of November; the novel doesn't need to be complete by then, nor does it have to be anything more than a rough draft.

But the philosophy behind the project seems to be that everyone has a novel's worth of ideas inside of them, but there's plenty of people who may be intimidated by either the time it takes to write one, the effort it takes or their own expectations during the planning stages (which has constantly held me back). So instead of going about things by putting all the planning first, the challenge suggests to start from a more basic framework, writing intensely based on that and then going back to tweak things as much as needed once December arrives and the rough draft is complete.

It's going to be my first time taking up this challenge, although I have heard of it before.  I'm really used to putting tons of planning into a story and then never actually getting it off the ground because I get too caught up in the planning phases, so I'm going to give this a try and see if the opposite approach really is more productive.

Since this is my first novel, I don't expect this concept to sound the most creative, but I might as well share it. It's about a power/thrash metal band with a thought-provoking album on the way. Their first three were all concept albums with fantasy or cyberpunk-type themes, more typical power metal lyrics— but with the fourth, they want to address political and social issues relevant to their world. They're also banking on their fans paying attention to the lyrics and being able to empathize, especially if nobody else actually will take a stand against the behind-the-scenes government corruption.

So, has anyone else heard of NaNoWriMo or taken part before? Sound interesting to any of you who haven't?

Considering this isn't a spam topic as much as non-Legends discussion, it's more at home in the Dark Forest than it is in the Jester's Court.

The Temple Games / Question of the Day?
« on: August 31, 2011, 12:54:27 PM »
Just thought I'd try a little trivia thing with some of the questions on Millionaire if that's okay. :P I'm probably the only one who still watches and really likes the old show, but hey, just in case I'm not the only one who's interested in trivia like this, we have this thread.  Basically I'm going to post one question from each episode, and then reveal the answer with the next question on the following day (or Monday if the last one was a Friday, of course).  And no, no lifelines. :P

So, today's rerun saw David Hankins; a pre-med student at Harvard; win $100,000 by correctly attributing the quote "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent" to Eleanor Roosevelt.  He then walked away from a $250,000 question asking for the only national flag with different emblems on both sides (the answer was Paraguay), but an audience member was given the chance to win $1000 by answering this question, which would have been worth $500,000:

Quote
Which of these rooms in the White House is also oval-shaped, like the Oval Office?

A: Treaty Room
B: Press Briefing Room
C: Diplomatic Reception Room
D: Map Room

The Temple Games / Hurt and Heal: Legends Episodes
« on: March 19, 2011, 04:26:34 PM »
I know, this may look or sound like it'll be agonizingly long, but I want to prevent that if we can. :P For right now, each player can only deduct one point a day from one episode's score and add it to another's score, but here's the (tentative) breakdown on how this will increase:

When 100 episodes are left: +/-2 points
When 80 episodes are left: +/-3 points
When 60 episodes are left: +/-4 points
When 40 episodes are left: +/-5 points
When 30 episodes are left: +/-6 points
When 20 episodes are left: +/-8 points
When 15 episodes are left: +/-10 points
When 10 episodes are left: +/-15 points
When 5 episodes are left: +/-20 points
When 2 episodes are left: +/-25 points

I'll let somebody else start us off. :P

Episode 115px]

The camera swerves through a thick rainforest, and after multiple turns, it eventually stops in front of an ancient temple.  The eyes of giant stone head next to the temple gate light up red as he begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE!"
The show's logo forms as two halves of a Pendant of Life come in from the sides of the screen and merge; the show's name appears above the logo as the camera pans across the entire temple.
"With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is NOW!"

On this final word, Kirk emerges from a thick patch of jungle plants and shrubs, then runs into the foreground and up a wide set of steps to greet the crowd. "Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Thank you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple.  The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards.  Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures of his temple.  Which one are we gonna hear about today?"

Faint orange lights underneath Olmec turn on, and the camera cuts to a close-up of him as he replies:
"The legend of the Stolen Lantern from the Aloha Tower."

"Ooh, the Stolen Lantern from the Aloha Tower!" Kirk says in response as the camera cuts back to him. "Well, one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the Stolen Lantern.  Will it be:
"Cameron and Dana of the Red Jaguars?" the camera pans to each team in order, their first names briefly appearing at the bottom of the screen?
"Neil and Monica of the Blue Barracudas,
"Gage and Mariah of the Green Monkeys,
"Isaiah and Emma of the Orange Iguanas,
"Travis and Sidney of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Darien and Lisa of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "and in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  But first, they have to cross the Moat, and here's how they'll do it today?
"One player from each team is holding an ancient surfboard.  When I say 'Go,' he'll put the surfboard into the Moat, and he'll stand on it and go across by climbing hand-over-hand on the knotted rope above him.  Once the first player's on the other side, it's his partner's turn to pull back the surfboard and he'll try to make it across."
"As soon as the second player steps onto the deck, it's his job to run over here and hit the gong." He hits the top button on the Red Jaguars' gong? which lights up red? to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will be going on to the next round.  Hey teams: Are you ready?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Olmec: Are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"One hundred times over!" Olmec replies.
"All right!" Kirk says in response. "Teams: On your marks, get set, GO!"

On "Go," the girls from the Blue Barracudas and Orange Iguanas, along with the boys from the other four teams, put their surfboards in the Moat and make their ways across using the overhead knotted ropes.  It isn't long before the Purple Parrots and Silver Snakes have a slight lead over the other teams, but within fifteen seconds, all the teams have their first players across, with the Orange Iguanas being the last team to reach the other side. "Everybody's doing great? no mistakes so far, so good!" Kirk commentates as the second players from each team pull on the tether ropes for their respective surfboards to reel them in.  The female Purple Parrot pulls her weight and is the first to retrieve her board, but the male Blue Barracuda noticeably works fast to reel his team's board in as well? after the Purple Parrot and Silver Snake, he is the third to start making his way across, twenty-five seconds into the round.  He doesn't make all that much progress, however, before the female Purple Parrot makes it across first and runs over to bang her team's gong (:32).
"We got our first team? ough, Red Jaguars gotta go back!" Kirk suddenly remarks as the female Red Jaguar loses grip on the knotted rope over her head and falls into the water mere seconds after the Purple Parrots place first.  After thirty-seven seconds of Moat crossing, the female Silver Snake hits her team's gong, placing second as three of the other four teams' final players approach the end of the Moat. "We got two teams, still need two, it's gonna be close!" In keeping with his relatively fast rope pull, the male Blue Barracuda is the third player to step off the surfboard and onto the deck, and he lights up his team's gong after forty-two seconds. "Still looking for one more team!" The male Orange Iguana makes a great effort to close the gap between him and his competitors, and he and the Green Monkey both reach the deck at almost the exact same time.  However, only one of the two gongs lights up, and the camera immediately cuts to Kirk celebrating with the Blue Barracudas around their gong.
"We got our four teams right here!" he proclaims while high-fiving the boy and girl from the Blue Barracudas in that order. "The Blue Barracudas?" Kirk holds for applause after each team name, and after the first one, each of the others is shown for a short time on camera? "and the Green Monkeys? and the Purple Parrots? and the Silver Snakes! The Red Jaguars and the Orange Iguanas gave it a great effort too.  We got a great effo? we have a great gift for them and here's what it is." Cameron, Dana, Isaiah and Emma will each be receiving a copy of Astro Boy on DVD.

"All right! Well, the legend is set," Kirk says in response as the camera cuts back to him, "and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the Seashell.  Will it be:
"Troy and Valerie of the Red Jaguars?" the camera pans to each team in order, their first names briefly appearing at the bottom of the screen?
"Jake and Rachelle of the Blue Barracudas,
"Michael and Katie of the Green Monkeys,
"Kaleb and Annie of the Orange Iguanas,
"Randy and Lynn of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Danny and Vivian of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "and in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter the Tem? enter Olmec's Temple.  But first, they have to cross the Moat, and here's how they'll do it today?

"Olmec: Are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"You betcha!" Olmec replies.
"All right then," Kirk says in response. "On your marks, get set, GO!"

On "Go," the first players do as directed, but within the first few seconds, the boys from the Red Jaguars, Purple Parrots and Blue Barracudas develop a notable lead over the girls from the other teams.  The female Green Monkey even loses the surfboard under her feet, and her feet touch the water, prompting her to go back and start over after only six seconds. "Green Monkeys gotta go back, but there's plenty of time, they can catch up!" However, it's not too long before the Red Jaguar and Silver Snake have to restart as well, making the Purple Parrots the first team to get a player across to the other side, in eleven seconds.  The Blue Barracudas and Orange Iguanas also get their first players across about six seconds later.
"This game takes a lot of balance," Kirk narrates as the second players on the Parrots, Barracudas and Iguanas start pulling on the ropes attached to their teams' surfboards, "and you can't go too fast but you gotta keep up!" The Green Monkeys get their first player across next, after twenty-four seconds, with the last two teams closely following suit.  A few seconds after starting across the Moat, the female Purple Parrot's surfboard slips out from underneath her, and she has to retry, but just as she starts back, the Blue Barracudas follow suit, but the Red Jaguars finally get their first player across (:30).  On the other hand, the Orange Iguanas maintain a steady pace and a significant lead, and thirty-eight seconds into the round, they are the first team to light up their gong.
"We got our first team: the Orange Iguanas! We're looking for three more!" Kirk declares while the Red Jaguar finishes reeling in her team's surfboard and the other players develop more of a lead.  A few seconds later, however, the Green Monkey goes too fast across the Moat and loses her grip on the overhead rope, causing her to fall into the water, but the Blue Barracuda makes it across and hits her team's gong after a full forty-five seconds, followed very closely by the Purple Parrots. "Still looking for one more team? and it's the Silver Snakes!" Sure enough, the Silver Snakes make it across and place fourth, banging their team gong fifty seconds after the round began.
"Blue Barracudas, made it across no problem at all!" announces Kirk as the camera cuts to him and the Blue Barracudas celebrating around their gong; he high-fives the boy on the team before continuing. "They're going on to the Steps of Knowledge, along with the Orange Iguanas?" the camera briefly shows each qualifying team, with Kirk stopping in between to allow for applause? "and the Purple Parrots? and the Silver Snakes! The Red Jaguars and the Green Monkeys? Tough match, it was really close, but we got a great gift for 'em and here's what it is." Troy, Valerie, Michael and Katie will each be receiving a copy of Ponyo on DVD.

"The Replaced Hand of Ali?i?lani Hale."

"Oh, the Replaced Hand of Ali-lani Hali!" Kirk says in response, a strange expression on his face as the camera cuts back to him. "So, the adventure is set, and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the Replaced Hand! Will it be:
"Derek and Christina of the Red Jaguars?" the camera pans to each team in order, their first names briefly appearing at the bottom of the screen?
"Cody and Adriana of the Blue Barracudas,
"Martin and Tara of the Green Monkeys,
"Eddie and Tiffany of the Orange Iguanas,
"Wesley and Abbie of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Jordan and Courtney of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple.
Once the first player's across, it's his partner's turn to pull back the surfboard and he'll make it across."
"As soon as the second player jumps down onto the deck, it's his job to run over here and hit the gong." He hits the top button on the Red Jaguars' gong? which lights up red? to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will be going on to the Steps of Knowledge! Are you ready, teams?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Olmec: Are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"Let's get crackin'," Olmec replies.
"All right!" Kirk says in response. " On your marks, get set, GO!"

The Orange Iguanas and Silver Snakes send their boys across the Moat first when Kirk shouts "Go," but the other teams all start by having their female players stand on the surfboard and use the knotted rope for support.  In mere seconds, however, the boy from the Silver Snakes loses his balance on the surfboard and it drifts away? the spotter at the far end of the Moat prompts him to go back and restart. "Silver Snakes have to go back, but it's still early, they can catch up!" Not too long after, however, the girls from the Blue Barracudas and the Green Monkeys meet a similar fate, putting the female Purple Parrot in the lead.  She makes it across first in thirteen seconds, but the male Orange Iguana is only a split second behind.  The Red Jaguars and Silver Snakes also get their first players across after about twenty seconds.
"This is tough? it's all about balance!" Kirk remarks as the male Purple Parrot reels in his team's surfboard first and stands on it, followed closely by the female Orange Iguana and less closely by the male Red Jaguar.  Exactly thirty seconds into the round, the female Blue Barracuda sets foot on the far deck of the Moat, making the Green Monkeys the only team without anybody on the other side. "We need four teams, who's gonna? oh, Orange Iguanas gotta go back!" Sure enough, the girl from the Orange Iguanas loses her grip on the knotted rope above and falls into the Moat without any leverage (:32); the male Blue Barracuda starts to quickly in reel his team's board as she starts to go back.  Thirty-seven seconds into the round, the male Red Jaguar also has to restart, just as the female Green Monkey finally makes it to the other side.  Her partner starts pulling on the board's tether rope just before the boy from the Purple Parrots reaches the deck and runs over to his team's gong, followed closely by the Silver Snakes.
"All right, we got our first two teams! We need two more!" Kirk declares right before the Orange Iguanas have to restart again.  She falls into the water just after the halfway mark this time. "Looks like it might be the Blue Barracudas?" The Barracudas are in fact the only team moving forward as he says this, but the Jaguars and Monkeys start to cross moments later.  Soon after, the male Blue Barracuda makes it across and locks in a full fifty-three seconds after the Moat began. "Still need one more team! Who's it gonna be??" At this point, the other three teams are inching along, but one in particular is further along than the other two; their gong is hit and lights up fifty-nine seconds into the Moat crossing, ending the round.
"That's it! We have our four teams!" announces Kirk, and the camera cuts to him celebrating with the Red Jaguars by their gong, and high-fiving the two players. "This was a tough match, but the Red Jaguars stuck it out and they're going on to the Steps of Knowledge, along with the Blue Barracudas?" he pauses to allow for applause while the camera briefly shows each of the qualifying teams? "and the Purple Parrots? and the Silver Snakes! The Green Monkeys and the Orange Iguanas? they gave it a great effort, but came up a little bit short.  We got a great gift for 'em and here's what it is."
